~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Opening shot: Alan's place, Jenna is wandering around singing some tune. She
doesn't seem to be able to get the words right, and she keeps on correcting
herself.

Alan comes into the room and wonders about what she is doing. Jenna
says she has put out this "festive decor" for the holidays. Alan does a
bah, humbug routine, but she puts it out all the same. Alan asks if Jenna has
sent the telegram to Ross yet, and she says she has. "Now we will see what
Blake will forfeit for her husband," Alan gloats. Jenna says that she wonders
if all this "forfeiting" is the right choice. She is thinking of what she
has done for Buzz and what Alan has done (is doing) for Tangie. Alan looks
at her harshly.

Blake and Tangie at the police station:

Blake is upset about her Ed. But not so much that she fails to notice
Tangie's state of mind. Tangie hasn't seen much of Alan-Michael recently. She
has decided she has to tell him the truth about her friendship with Alan. She
leaves as Alan-Michael enters the scene and he follows her out. He begs her to
stay and talk to him.

Roger and Holly in bed:

The phone awakens them. Roger picks it up and Gilly tells him about Ed.
Roger tells her to reserve space for that will be the lead item in the news.
He tells Holly that Ed is in jail while he gives orders to Gilly and Holly
jumps out of bed. Roger hangs up and Holly is getting ready to leave. Roger
says that she promised him the day and that she can't go anywhere.

Ross and Ed in Ed's cell:

Ed doesn't want Michelle to be at the arraignment, which is going to
be held in a short time, but Ross thinks they will not be able to dissuade
her. Ed asks Ross to do him a favor: get him some crayons and paper. Ross
agrees and warns him that all the local press will be out in force and leaves.

-------The cell door slams shut on Ed and a Lighthouse spins----------

Alan and Jenna:

Alan denies that he is doing anything for Tangie. Jenna doesn't believe
him. She says that they both like to cover up their emotions, but that she
has discovered that they can not make them go away. Alan is irritated by the
implications he hears. "What I'm implying is that you are human," Jenna
responds. She warns him that if he keeps his feelings for Tangie all bottled
up, he will grow to hate Alan-Michael.

There is a loud banging on the door and Mindy's voice yelling from
outside. Jenna runs out of the room and Alan lets Mindy in. Mindy rushes in
angrily. She says that she felt sorry for Alan, that she had never seen the
side of him that everyone said they knew, but now she has finally seen it. She
knows about how he set up Nick in the bahamas and she's ready to fight. "Stay
away from me and from my family."

Nick and Alex:

Nick is searching for Mindy, but he is having no luck. No one has
seen her since the morning. Alex thinks he is worried over nothing, but Nick
explains he told Mindy about the Bahamas. "Well, what do you expect then?"
she sniffs. Actually she took it quite well, Nick says defensively. Alex can't
believe that. Nick says it was just such bad timing with Dylan's accident
and all. In the meantime, Nick is worried about the Lewises. They still haven't
called to accept his help and they don't have much time left. He decides to
call the bank to tell them to put the "screws to Lewis Oil".

Alan-Michael and Tangie:

Alan-Michael needs a shoulder to lean on and he hopes Tangie will be
there for him. He is confused about Ed. Why is he drinking after such a long
time? And wasn't he just so utterly happy? "When you are an alcoholic it's
[drinking] always an issue," Tangie says with more understanding of Ed than
anyone else. But this is all she says. She ducks the rest of his questions
and frustrations, saying that she is with the press and has a job to do. But
Blake is out there, and she could really use his help. They go to Blake
and Tangie leaves. Alan-Michael and Blake hug, and they agree that Ed couldn't
possibly have done it. Alan-Michael again states his confusion over why Ed
would be drinking now, and Blake tells him about the switched drink at the
engagement party. But there is no need to worry, she says, Ross is on the
job.

Ross and Ed:

Ross comes back with the "deluxe" set of crayons. [Though I'm pretty
sure he said he got 16, which I think is kind of small. Deluxe should be
64 or even 128. It should have silver and burnt umber and a little sharpener
on the side. This box is too thin to have any of that.] They are almost ready
for the arraignment and Ross gives Ed some last minute advice. The fact is
Ed never hid any facts and he was headed to the police when he saw that he
might look suspect. Also, Ross reminds Ed, that Ed doesn't really know what
happened. He remembers nothing. "You, my friend, are not guilty," Ross
exhorts. They leave the cell together and head for the throngs.

Holly and Roger:

Roger reminds Holly of their plans about going up to a farm and having
a nice private day, etc. Holly pays no attention as she rushes to get ready.
Roger is incensed: "The perils of Ed Bauer still really gets your attention
big time". He thinks there is no need to rush for "Ed is going to be
drowning in concern". Holly doesn't respond much other than to continue walking
out the door. Roger tells her to wait a second, because he is coming with her.

Ross and Ed:

They struggle through a huge gaggle of reporters. Alan-Michael and
Blake join them in the courtroom and offer their support. Ed thinks the best
support they could give him would be to leave and not hear all of what will
be said. They don't think they can do that. Then maybe they can try to get
Michelle to skip this nasty affair. They agree to try, but they don't think
it's possible either. "Michelle's a big girl," Blake answers. Alan-Michael
and Ed apologize to each other about their last encounter. Alan-Michael
is sorry that he put Eve in that awkward position and Ed is sorry that he
didn't support Alan-Michael in his reconciliation with his father. "If hanging
on to your father means that much to you, then hang on, you could lose him."
Michelle and Eve enter the scene and are mobbed. The reporters scream all
sorts of questions at Michelle, as covers her up. They come into the court
room.

Ross gets a telegram about his job in S. America. All is a go. Blake
thinks that it is a good omen and that Ed will be okay. Ross asks Blake to
do him a favor. Would she take Spaulding's Escrow account and transfer it
for him?

Alan and Mindy:

Mindy continues her rage. "Did it entertain you?" Mindy thinks that
Alan knew what she would find in the Spaulding safe. Alan, who always seems
genuinely concerned about Mindy's feelings, says that it was not Nick's idea
but Alex's. But that doesn't matter to Mindy. He went along with it, he signed
the documents. Alan thinks, then, maybe this is her chance. She can show Nick
where he is headed. Maybe she can convince him that the Spaulding Presidency
is not for him. But this angers Mindy even more. All Alan cares about is
securing that position for his son, and that would be even worse than Nick
as president. For then, Alan would really be in control, with Alan-Michael
as his puppet. She decides she will give Nick another chance. She leaves Alan.

Nick and Alex:

The bank refuses to lean on the Lewises until they get all the Spaulding
accounts. Which account don't they have, Alex asks, shocked. The escrow account.
Alex fumes and calls Ross, who was supposed to have handled that long ago.
Ross is sitting in the courtroom, when he takes the call. Alex thinks that it
is not in the least inappropriate to call since Ross has taken so long to do
his job. Ross is fed up with it all and says "Listen, Honey, I'm tired of
you and your demands" and basically quits.

Blake at the bank:

The bank teller tells her that the account she is trying to transfer
can not be transferred since it has already been closed.

Ed and Michelle:

Michelle just wants to know why Ed was drinking. She thought that
they were all happy. Ed has no explanation for why he was drinking, but he
insists that they were happy and it was nobody's fault. He justs wants to
know that they will all (especially Michelle) love him even if they are
"disappointed" in him. [Michelle too, won't believe he did it.] Michelle
says of course and they hug.

The judge is late and they decide to go to a backroom for peace and
quiet. Ross leads them out and the press shark attacks again.

Holly and Roger come in on the tail end and Roger makes a crack
about "fallen saints". Holly tells him to keep his sarcasm to himself, and
leaves. Roger goes into the room where Ed sits at a table, alone, drawing
with his crayons. Roger, calling Ed "buddy", asks him a few questions about
his situation. He is shocked when Ed does not protest his innocence. Ed wants
him to leave, but Roger starts in about the freedom of the press. He says
that WSPR will "fall all over ourselves to be fair". Holly comes in and
drags him out. She is furious that he would try "baiting" a man in Ed's
situation, and wonders if he just wants things to go back to the way they
used to be.

Alan and Jenna:

There is a knock on the door and Jenna leaves with a "nature's
calling" excuse. Tangie comes in and she announces that she has to tell
Alan-Michael about their friendship.

Holly and Ed:

Holly is worried about Michelle. She says she will talk to Eve
and see if there is anything she can do. (She promises Roger will not be
around if she gets to have a heart-to-heart.) Ross comes in and says that
they are ready to go. Once again, they run the gamut of the press.

Court is in session. The judge is a middle-aged white female. The
prosecuting attorney is a young white male, maybe 23. The judge asks them
all to wait while she reads the arrest report, and Cutter joins the scene.
Michelle asks Alan-Michael to get the Journal to go easy on her dad.
Alan-Michael agrees and he tries to get her to go with him there, but no
dice. He decides that he is going to leave and he leans over to wish Ed
luck, and he kisses his cheek [!].

Eve and Ed talk a little. She wonders about the meaning of the drink.
He says there is none. She asks him how he felt in the morning. Beyond a
headache which could come from the blow to his head, did he feel like he
had a normal hangover. Ed admits he didn't have the normal stomach pains
that come with a hang over, and a light goes on over Eve's head.

The judge asks for the plea (Not Guilty) and Ross asks that Ed be
let out on his own recognizance. The prosecution says that Detective Cutter
says that Dr. Bauer is a risk, but that he has no evidence of it now, and
asks for a later date to prove it. Ross says that that is ridiculous and that
Dr. Bauer is a fine, upstanding, well-loved member of the community. The
prosecution, again through Cutter, says that Dr. Bauer hid evidence and was
planning to say goodbye to his daughter and run when the Detective caught
up with him. [This of course would be totally ridiculous if you didn't think
of how Cutter must feel after everyone else in Springfield tends to act just
that way whenever they are accused of any crime.] The judge is disturbed by
these accusations and decides to hold a bail hearing after the holidays.

Cutter and the prosecutor shake hands, and Ed looks shaken. Michelle
is surprised at how quick the whole thing was. They explain to her about
an arraignment, and Ed points out an agitated Blake to Ross.

Blake tells Ross about the account. He says that that is impossible.
He claims the account has 1.4 million dollars in it.

Mindy and Nick:

Mindy comes in to the mansion to Nick's relief. But seeing her
expression he says "You're still mad?" Mindy explains that she isn't mad
about the Bahamas thing, that she understands Alan better now. She doesn't
blame Nick, even though she certainly doesn't like any of it. Nick says
he is "going kinda crazy" and Mindy agrees. She doesn't want to think about
any of it anymore and she closes her eyes and hugs him.

Tangie and Alan:

Tangie paints a picture to Alan of an invisible wall between she
and Alan-Michael that is her lie. Alan wonders if this is the day to tell
him, since Ed is going through so much. Alan-Michael comes in and is shocked
to see Tangie there ("You didn't tell me you were coming here"). Tangie begins
to tell him that she knew Alan before, but Alan takes over. He tells his son,
as if it were his idea to tell. Alan-Michael's face fall as his father says
"we were very close and I didn't want anyone to know about me yet". "But
what about afterwards, when you knew I was searching for my father?"

Ed and Police:

Ed asks for a moment to say goodbye to his daughter. Michelle is sorry
that her dad won't be around for Thanksgiving. Ed reminds her of once when
she was younger, when he couldn't be around, and of a turkey she drew in school
with the thumb method (draw a turkey by sketching your hand) and a set of
crayons. They put the turkey in Ed's place and he was there. Well, Ed has
drawn her another one, and he wants her to put it in his place. That way he
will be with her for Thanksgiving. Michelle takes it, and Eve says that they
will do it, and then when Ed gets out, they will have the big dinner. The three
of them kiss and hug and then Ed is taken away. Holly comes in and looks
sympathetically at Michelle.

Roger and Alex:

Roger brings Alex flowers. "What's in them? Black widow spiders?"
Roger worries that Alex will be alone for the holidays, but she assures
him that Nick and Mindy will join her later. Roger begins to reminisce about
the old days. He remembers the flowers she likes and what food is on her
Thanksgiving table. They remind each other of some ice skating experience
from their happy past. [This was a chilling scene.] But that was a long time
ago.

Ross and Blake at the bank:

Ross is sure there must be a mistake. Blake thinks that maybe Ross
got the wrong account when he gave Frank the money. But he couldn't have done
that. If he did, he could be disbarred, even go to jail.

Tangie and Alan and Alan-Michael:

Tangie starts to say she was going to tell him, but Alan jumps in
with "Tangie was afraid to tell you, because she thought you might get upset
and it seems she was right". [I have been unable to really get this scene
across, I'm afraid. It was a master stroke by Alan. He made the whole thing
seem like Tangie's idea, but without being obvious.] Alan-Michael leaves and
Tangie follows him. She says that she knows it has been a bad day, but she
is glad she finally told him the truth. She leaves and he says nothing.

Back in the house, Jenna comes out of the woodwork and says "You
can't bear it can you? Seeing them together. What are you going to do about
it?"

Tomorrow--Alan's answer. And will Dr. Ed Bauer go to jail or will Eve Guthrie
discover the truth in time? And what about Nick and Mindy? Does she have a
small knife she is going to gut him with in a moment? We hope so. All these
questions and more will be answered in the next episode of Guiding Light.
Toodle-loo.
