GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1997

Directed by Brian Mertes

HIGHLIGHTS:
* Roy is arraigned; Abby & Rick react emotionally
* Harley & Phillip distract Annie while Reva tosses her room
* Cassie takes matters into her own hands with Tammy
* Jesse prepares to confront his homies

COURTHOUSE: As Rick & Abby look on, Roy pleads "not guilty" to charges
of assault, attempted rape & attempted murder. Rick asks Abby if she's
sure she wants to go through with this. She is positive.

JESSE'S PLACE: While Jesse boards up his broken window, Michelle
expresses concern that someone threw a rock through it. She thinks he
should call the police, but he says such stuff is common in his
neighborhood. He kisses her & says she worries too much. As they hug,
he remembers reading the note that came with the rock. It threatened
Michelle's life unless Jesse kept Abby from testifying.

SPAULDING MANSION: Phillip & Harley arrive & find a scary, half-
finished portrait of Annie on an easel in the living room. Harley
questions Phillip's plan to move back into the mansion to keep an eye
on Alan & Annie. Phillip says the portrait scares him & jokes that
he'll just keep sleeping at Harley's instead. Harley calls Reva &
tells her the coast will be clear for about an hour, based on
information they got from Nettie. Reva wants to search for the cameo &
anything else that might be a link to her sister.

HOTEL: A bellman helps Cassie wheel her bags into a room. He offers to
help her unload them, but she tips him & tells him she will do it
herself. When he's gone, she opens a duffel bag to reveal the stowed-
away Tammy. Cassie promises they will be together forever now.

SPAULDING MANSION: Phillip is creeped out by the portrait; the eyes
seem to follow him around the room. Harley tinkers with the telephone
& says all the lines in the house are crossed now. They are both
anxious to get Reva in & out ASAP.

Annie arrives, wearing a red jacket & carrying a rifle. Phillip &
Harley pretend to admire the portrait. Phillip asks Annie if she's
going hunting. "Maybe," she replies. "It's open season for sitting
ducks."

Phillip tells Annie to put the gun down, but she continues to point it
haphazardly at them while claiming Phillip has some nerve bringing
Harley/Caitlin into her home. Phillip reminds Annie that it's *his*
home & she is just a guest. Annie starts going off on Harley, so
Phillip grabs the rifle from her & warns her never to threaten Harley
again. Annie senses his protectiveness is more than friendly. Phillip
says his relationship with Harley is no secret. Annie hopes they're as
happy as she & Alan; Phillip is sure they are, though maybe not nearly
as happy as Josh & Reva. [Zing!] This shuts Annie up.

Phillip reminds Annie that they used to be friends. She says he chose
Reva over her, but he says it didn't have to be an either/or
situation. Annie says the gun isn't loaded & doesn't work; it's a
showpiece that Alan bought & she had it restored for him. She's
offended that Phillip would think the worst of her & claims she's not
into "blood games" & doesn't hurt people the way Phillip does. Phillip
says he never intended to hurt Annie. Annie throws his fake concern
for her while she was in the loony bin in his face. Harley tries to
defend Phillip, but Phillip jumps on Annie for all the horrid things
she did to Reva & Harley. Harley tells Phillip to leave Annie alone.

OUTSIDE JESSE'S: Marcus arrives & Jesse talks to him without Michelle
knowing. Jesse tells him they caught Roy & also fills him in on the
threatening note. [WCBS interrupts with live coverage of Louise
Woodward's sentencing. This takes about 18 minutes. If anyone can fill
in the gap in the action, please let me know.]

SPAULDING MANSION: Reva, dressed like a phone company worker, searches
Annie's room. In a chest at the foot of the bed, she finds a baby
dress & realizes Annie will never forgive her for not being able to
have children. Then she fins some more little girl clothes, but
they're too small for Marah & too big for a baby.

HOTEL: Tammy is face-down on the bed, upset. Cassie tries to explain
that things don't always work out the way we want. She never wanted to
be away from Tammy & has missed her a lot. The reason she went to
Springfield & got a job with the "mean people" was to get Tammy back.
Now they're going to be together forever. Tammy asks if they will live
in the hotel. Cassie says they're going to take a train west & have
new clothes, a new home and new names. Tammy gets to pick the names,
so she chooses "Madonna" for herself & "Morgan" for her mom. Morgan
was her best friend's name, but now Cassie will be new best friend.

COURTHOUSE: Rick angrily tells Ross that he would never put anything
before Abby. Ross says Rick has certainly be acting that way. The
press asks Ross to comment on the case & he says the state will prove
that Roy attacked an innocent, deaf woman & inflicted life-threatening
injuries. He dismisses the press.

Abby takes both Rick's and Ross's hands. She says they are making her
tired. She may not understand everything that's going on, but she
needs both of them to get through this. How can they fight for her if
they're fighting with each other? Rick apologizes & Ross says Abby is
right. Rick apologizes to Ross for questioning his judgement & says he
knows Ross did the right thing for Abby. Roy walks by in handcuffs,
semi-smiling towards Abby.

SPAULDING HOUSE: As they sit down with Phillip for tea, Harley admits
to Annie that she lied from the second they met, and eavesdropped &
spied to try to get Annie to spill what she knew about Reva's sister.
She also admits that while she was doing all that spying, she
discovered that Annie was a real person & it made her a little sad.
Phillip says he knows who Annie is inside, but she's gotten lost along
the way. He feels she can get back to who she was before. Harley says
they're not excusing the horrible things Annie did, but knowing her,
they can somewhat understand it. Annie looks suspicious. Harley knows
how horrible it is to lose a child & to lose the person you love. She
suggests that Annie put it all behind her & get on with her life. They
should all get n with their lives. Annie says they're both full of it
& she doesn't believe a word they're saying.

OUTSIDE JESSE'S: Michelle is there now, so Jesse & Marcus cover up
their real reason for meeting by talking about football. She couldn't
care less about the subject & heads inside. Jesse follows her & asks
if he can borrow her car later to drop some stuff off at his father's
place. Michelle offers to go along, but Jesse doesn't think that's a
good idea, since he hasn't told his dad that they're back together
yet. Michelle thinks Jesse isn't telling her something, but Jesse says
he wants to talk to his dad about getting help with his drinking
first. Marcus offers Michelle a drive home in exchange for some
cookies. She accepts & invites Jesse to come over to her house later.
Jesse thanks Marcus, as Marcus & Michelle leave.

After they leave, Jesse puts on his jacket & goes outside. He looks
around & yells for whoever it is to come on out. He says he got the
"air letter." He knows they don't like that he turned Roy in, but he
doesn't like what Roy did, & he doesn't like getting his window broken
either. He yells again for them to come out & accuses them of being
chicken. "Come on, let's do this now," he challenges.

No one responds to Jesse's call. Jesse continues to talk to his unseen
homies, telling them that Roy crossed the line by beating up a poor
deaf girl & left her for dead. A girl who reminds him of their
friend's little sister. "Animals don't even do stuff like that," he
claims. Finally, some guys come out to face Jesse. They're carrying
baseball bats & pipes.

COURTHOUSE: "Hey, what's up, pretty girl?" asks Roy as he passes by
Abby. Rick leaps at him as the bailiff holds Roy back. Ross pulls Rick
away & Roy's attorney pushes the men apart. Ross tells the bailiff to
get Roy into a holding cell, but the bailiff starts to unlock Roy's
cuffs instead. It seems Roy has managed to post bail. Abby freaks out
& cries on Rick's chest. Roy waves his arms & says he's free as a
bird. Rick calls him a pathetic loser. Roy's lawyer reminds them all
that Roy is innocent until proven guilty. Roy says he'll have to make
the most of his time as a free man. Rick lunges for Roy again, but
Ross & the other lawyer keep them apart. Abby cries.

Rick threatens to kill Roy. Ross reminds Roy that his bail is
contingent on a restraining order keeping him at least 100 yards from
Abby & it starts right now. Roy says no problem. He says he's sorry
for all Abby's problems & asks what the sign language is for "See you
around." Roy's lawyer takes him away as Abby cries. Rick asks how Roy
could have made bail. Ross doesn't know; maybe his family was able to
borrow enough money. Rick promises Abby that he'll take care of her.
As she hugs him, Roy blows her a kiss from the elevator.

HOTEL: Cassie says the new names are a deal. They are going to have a
wonderful new life together, where every day is an adventure. Tammy
says the best part is that they'll always be together. Cassie says
that's all that matters. Tammy asks when they're going on the train.
Cassie says it will be soon, but when they leave, they're going to
have to play the same game as before, where Tammy hides in the bag
until Cassie says it's safe to come out. In the car, she has to hunker
down in the back seat. As a final touch, Cassie gives her some heart-
shaped sunglasses to wear.

Cassie gets worried when she hears a knock at the door. She makes
Tammy hide behind the bed while she answers the door. It's two people
from Chicago Child Services. The man says Cassie has gone too far this
time. Cassie says doesn't know what they're talking about. The woman
says they are there to place Tammy in protective custody. Cassie yells
at them to get out & pushes them toward the door.

SPAULDIG MANSION: Reva continues to search through Annie's drawers.
She finds a red folder labeled "Confidential."

Downstairs, Annie is sure that Harley & Phillip are only being nice
because they want something. She knows that they're not her friends.
She picks up the phone, but it's still not working. She grabs the gun
& starts to head upstairs, in case the phone is working there. Phillip
asks where she's going with the gun & she says she's going to put it
in Alan's gun case & they should leave her alone. She runs up the
stairs. Phillip is sure she will find Reva.

Upstairs, Reva peruses the material in the folder & decides that Annie
has dodged her last bullet. She looks behind her as if she hears a
sound, as the screen fades to black.
