GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1997

Directed by Bruce S. Barry

HIGHLIGHTS:
* Jenna worries about Buzz while Frank & Eleni look for him.
* Buzz tags after Nola like a duck after its mother.
* Harley & Phillip listen to each other's woes.
* Annie browbeats Josh.
* Cassie convinces Hart to help her win back Tammy; Annie overhears.

FIREHOUSE: Frank, Eleni & Jenna check the firehouse to see if Buzz has
returned there, but he hasn't. Jenna is frantic, and has no hope that
he will come back, since he doesn't know where he lives or who any of
them are. Eleni tries fruitlessly to convince her that everything will
be OK. Frank wants to call the police station, but Jenna stops him.
She wants Buzz to come home, but not because they drag him there, but
because it's what he wants, which it apparently isn't. She sobs
helplessly on Frank's shoulder.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Nola paces in the kitchen. She starts to clean up, but
ends up throwing some pans to the floor in frustration. Buzz walks in
& says he knows how she feels. She asks what he's doing there & says
he has to go home. "That's not my home," says Buzz. The only thing he
has in his new life is her.

HARLEY'S APARTMENT: Harley asks Phillip what he's waiting for. "Hop
on," she challenges him. "Isn't this how we always solve our problems?
In the sack?" Phillip shoves her onto the couch & tells her to sit
down. He wouldn't sleep with her on a bet right now. He encourages her
to just break down & let it all out, but Harley's much more interested
in being mean to Phillip. He thinks she should be a wreck right now,
since her father doesn't even know who she is, and she should want to
spend time with someone who cares about her. She keeps trying to get
up & he keeps pushing her back down onto the couch, like a weeble that
wobbles, but won't fall down. She manages to get up & angrily tells
him to leave. Then she walks toward the kitchen & runs her hand
through her hair in a moment of vulnerability.

LEWIS OIL: Josh buzzes Cassie & asks her to bring him some contracts.
[At this point, WCBS News interrupts with news of Marv Albert's
suspended sentence, followed by his attorney's press conference, so we
lose about 3-4 minutes of action.]

When we return, Cassie is finishing a phone call as Hart arrives. Hart
says he wouldn't blame her if she gave him grief for letting her down.
On the contrary, she thinks he's been very generous to hook her up
with a lawyer & pay her expenses. She understands that he can't get
any further involved because of Dinah. He explains that he's there to
discuss his oil deal with Billy & Josh, and says that this business
will be going on for a few months, so he hopes things won't be too
uncomfortable between them. Cassie apologizes for being rude to Hart
earlier, but says when it comes to Tammy, she's overly protective. He
understands & they smooth things over. He gives her some papers for
Billy & says he'll see her around.

Hart leaves, looking back at Cassie as if waiting for something. Just
as the elevator door starts to close, she calls after him & he catches
the door & comes back. Cassie says she knows they agreed to not have
any more contact, but she needs to talk to him about something really
private. She asks him to come to the file room with her. He doesn't
think it's a good idea, but she begs him & he relents.

In Josh's office, Annie waits while Josh finishes a phone call. He
then tells her that she's not welcome at Lewis Oil or anywhere near
his family. He tries to show her to the door, but she says she has
business to discuss. She's got an offer on LOWHAD, but Josh neglected
to sign some papers finalizing the transfer of the house to her. She
reminds him of how special that house was to them, and about all the
wonderful things he used to say to her, although it's now obvious to
her that he never really meant any of them. Josh doesn't want to go
there. Annie says she never should have believed him. She should have
known from the beginning that he would leave her.

HARLEY'S: Phillip asks if Harley really wants him to leave. She says
he may as well, because he's going to walk out on her sooner or later,
just like every other man in her life. But if Phillip wants to talk
about her dad, she's ready.

She didn't know Buzz when she was growing up, but she thought of him
as a hero. She remembers the day she looked for his name on the
Vietnam War Memorial, but it wasn't there. And then she discovered
that the real reason he never came home wasn't because he was dead,
but because he was busy raising another daughter & couldn't be
bothered to let his original family know he was alive. "And you
forgave him," Phillip reminds her. "No I didn't," retorts Harley. "Not
really. But he's my father. I guess I just learned to care about him."
Phillip says sometimes that's all love is. Harley asks how he would
know and deridingly calls him "Mr. Perfect." Phillip says he'll
pretend she didn't say that.

Harley says she's known Phillip a long time, but he never lets her see
that he has any problems. "When have I had a chance?" asks Phillip. He
says they'll talk about his problems another time & encourages her to
talk more about Buzz. When he came back, she says, she punished him
every way she knew how, and he took it. [WCBS News interrupts again to
bring us Marv Albert's live statement. We lose another 2-3 minutes.]

Harley cries a little & says she's really tired. She asks Phillip to
go. He says he won't walk out on her. "Even if I beg you to?" she
asks. No, he says. He gets her to stretch out on the couch & covers
her with an afghan. He tells her to rest, as he brushes the hair away
from her face.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Nola gives Buzz a cup of coffee & says he should drink
it & go. He tells her he was going to leave town. He went to an ATM,
but he felt like using the card in his wallet would be like stealing
someone else's money, even if he could remember the code, which he
can't. Nola says he shouldn't think of leaving town. He has to go back
to his family, & then his memory will start coming back. Buzz says
"she" (meaning Jenna) said the same thing. But he feels like "that
collection of lunatics" can't be his real family. He was starting to
feel better until they swooped down on him. They were suffocating him.
Nola promises they won't push him anymore & he can take things in his
own time. Buzz says the only person he feels human with is Nola.

Nola says she's made a terrible mistake & she can't let it happen
again. She knows it sounds unfeeling, but she tells him he has to go.
Buzz looks at her uncomprehendingly.

FIREHOUSE: Frank quietly tells Eleni that he thinks Buzz probably went
to Nola's. Jenna says he needn't whisper; she also knows where Buzz
has probably gone. Frank wants to go get Buzz, but Jenna says he'll
come back when he's ready. Frank says fine, but it's not over with
Nola. Even though there's not enough evidence to arrest Nola for
stalking, Frank believes she was the one. Everything points to her.
Jenna wonders if Harley might just be trying to place blame on the
first available target.

Frank expresses anguish over the way Buzz didn't know any of them at
all, and the fact that the one person Buzz is responding to is most
likely the person responsible for his current condition. Jenna knows
this is probably true, but nevertheless wants Frank to drop it. All
she cares about is for Buzz to get his life together, so he can come
back, marry her & be a father to his children. Pressuring him & going
after Nola isn't going to accomplish that.

LEWIS OIL: Josh comes out of his office, looking for Cassie. He seems
frustrated when he can't find her, & grabs a folder off her desk.
Annie sticks her head out of the office & tortures Josh a little more.
"You never loved me, did you?" she prods. He walks past her, back into
the office. She smugly reminds him of his words after finding her at
Cross Creek: "I helped you like I would help a drowning dog." Josh
says he never meant to hurt her. Annie says he did a really good job
of it anyway. He tells her to back off & adds that if a person does
enough horrible things, eventually she'll get what she deserves.

Annie accuses Josh of trying to put all the blame on her. She admits
that she hasn't been a saint, but she didn't cheat on him & she didn't
walk away from their marriage & she didn't lie about loving him. Josh
says he tried to love her, with everything inside of him. Annie is
incredulous. He *tried*?! Josh gets angry. He sees Annie for what she
is & has no sympathy for her. He says she's responsible for everything
that's happened to her & she knows it. Annie says he's wrong. "You &
Reva did this to me. You created this. And we both know it."

FILE ROOM: Cassie doesn't want to put Hart in a bad position. Hart
says he doesn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Dinah. Cassie
says she's not interested in Hart & couldn't be right now even if she
wanted to. All she cares about is getting her daughter back. But she
would like him to come to Chicago with her. He can't imagine why. She
needs him to pretend they're getting married. [Huh?]

Hart starts to leave without even considering Cassie's proposal. She
asks him to hear her out. Her lawyer thinks she & Hart are involved &
said that if Child Welfare thought she was getting married & met her
fiance, she'd have a better chance of getting Tammy back. Hart says
that's nice, but he's not her fiance. She says the meeting is in
Chicago tomorrow. They could leave tonight, get a hotel room & be back
in Springfield by the next afternoon. Hart says he can't leave
Springfield. Cassie says all he has to do is sit there; she'll do all
the lying. Her lawyer said this is practically the only way she can
get Tammy back. Hart doesn't care. Cassie asks him to put himself in
her shoes. Wouldn't he do anything to get Peter back? Can't he just
sit in a chair & pretend? Hart is sorry, but he can't help her. He
leaves her alone in the file room.

JOSH'S OFFICE: Josh tries to take care of some business on the phone
while Annie continues to harrass him. He tells her to leave, but she
just keeps jabbering. She says she loved him & loved his children &
they loved her. It all happened because Reva is so selfish. And Annie
has nothing. She can't even have children. "WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP!!!"
yells Josh, finally. He grabs her by the arm & drags her to the door.
He doesn't want to hear anything from Annie ever again. She should
sell the house, keep the money & just stay out of his life! He slams
his office door behind her & she cringes. "I have a great effect on
men," she tells herself.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Nola says Buzz has a family & that's where he should
be. He can't stay with her. That will only make things worse for
everyone. "Please don't do this to me," says Buzz. Nola says she *did*
do it to him. He has to understand that this is all her fault, even if
he told his family something different. But she doesn't think they
believe him. "You don't belong here. Please go," she begs.

Frank calls from outside. He says he'd like to talk to Buzz if he's
there. Buzz shuts the kitchen door & asks Nola not to let Frank in or
tell him that she's seen him. He promises to leave, as long as she
doesn't send him back to "those people." Frank continues to call out
to Nola to open the door..

FIREHOUSE: Vanessa & Jenna come downstairs, having just put Coop to
bed. Van suggests that Jenna tell Buzz about the baby. Jenna doesn't
want to do anything that would make Buzz feel obligated to come back
to her. And if she was worried about telling him about the baby
before, just think how she feels now. He doesn't know her, but she
just happens to be pregnant, although it's not his kid, and the kid's
real father is a real slimeball to boot. Nah, it just doesn't sound
like a good idea, all things considered.

Van doesn't think Jenna's being fair to Buzz. She thinks Jenna is
giving up on Buzz. She likens the situation to what happened to her &
Matt. She left because she was trying to spare her family pain, and
she got lost in the darkness. Buzz is in the dark too, and Jenna needs
to help him find his way out. She needs to look for Buzz just the way
Matt looked for her. If she just sits & waits, she might lose him. She
lost him once, when she left & didn't tell him about Coop & she
shouldn't lose him again. Van hugs Jenna & then leaves.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Nola lets Frank in, and claims she didn't hear the door
because she was upstairs, running water. Frank isn't really buying it.
He says he doesn't have a search warrant, but he can get one. Frank
starts looking around & asking about Buzz; Nola says she hasn't seen
him. Eleni explains that since Buzz seems to feel so close to Nola,
they thought he would come there. She knows Nola feels close to Buzz &
wishes she could have more with him. Nola can't believe Eleni is
saying this. Frank says he's going to keep his eye on Nola. He & Eleni
leave.

Nola goes to the other door, where Buzz is waiting in the hall. He
follows her back into the kitchen & apologizes for the position he put
her in. He feels badly about the way Frank spoke to her. Nola is
distraught, but says Frank had every right. He loves Buzz & is
concerned about him. She hates lying & now Frank is going to be
watching her. Buzz asks what's for dinner. "Nothing," says Nola, on
the verge of tears. She says they're going for a drive. Buzz says he
trusts her. She puts on her jacket & he follows her to the door, like
a duckling who has imprinted on the wrong mother figure.

HARLEY'S: Harley wakes up suddenly & calls out to Phillip. He doesn't
seem to be there & she seems disappointed. "You told him to leave;
what did you expect?" Phillip returns from the store with a bag that
might hold a greeting card. Harley asks what he bought, but he says it
doesn't concern her. She apologizes. He says it was something he was
going to work on while she was resting.

Phillip says he's been thinking about what she said about her father
leaving & feeling that he didn't love her, & it got him to thinking
about Lizzie & how she might feel about him. Harley says Lizzie knows
Phillip loves her. Phillip says she's just a little kid. All she knows
is that one day she had a mother & a father & then she didn't. Her
birthday is coming up, so he sent her a ton of presents, but he
realizes that they won't say how much he misses her & loves her. So he
thought he would try to write something to her, to tell her. Something
from him that she could have when he's not around, so she'll always
know she's his "best girl." Harley smiles.

Harley suggests that Phillip write to Lizzie what he just told her.
Phillip doesn't know if she would understand, because she's so young.
Harley says he has a way with words & can get his feelings across to
her. Phillip wonders why she's so sure. Harley says when she first met
Phillip, he was a tormented, but very talented writer. Phillip shakes
his head & says that was another life. She says he's still the same
guy, the one who was faster than a speeding bullet & could leap tall
buildings in a single bound. Phillip thinks she has him confused with
someone else. Harley doesn't think so. Besides, he can put up with her
when she's in the middle of one of her dramas. "Harley, being with you
is the best part of my life right now," says Phillip.

What's tough, he says, is accepting how completely he's failed as a
father. He's managed to skate by most of his life without taking other
people's emotions too seriously, & he's gotten away with murder. He
always figured no real harm done, until Lizzie came along. Harley says
she's still in his life, but he doesn't think every other holiday is
much like being a real father. He wishes they could be together all
the time. He thought he would get his way forever, but he was wrong.

Harley joins Phillip on the couch & says he doesn't have to be Mr.
Perfect or a superhero, or anyone but who he is. Phillip is glad
Harley feels that way, but he's thinking of Lizzie. "I'm not saying it
for me; I'm saying it for her," replies Harley. "You are her father,
and you love her. You are here now. That's all she needs to know. You
trust me on this one." Phillip gives Harley a big hug & thanks her.
She smiles up at him & says he doesn't have to torture himself
anymore, because she's OK now. Phillip says she's stuck with him,
whether she likes it or not. Harley decides she likes it, & they kiss
passionately.

FILE ROOM: Cassie talks to herself, apologizing to Tammy & vowing to
get her back. Hart hears this through the partly ajar file room door.
He starts to walk away, then thinks about when Cassie asked him to put
himself in her shoes. He reaches for his wallet & looks at a picture
of Peter. Then he heads back into the file room & closes the door. He
says he'll help her. He couldn't live with himself if she didn't.
Cassie hugs him & says he's a wonderful man & Dinah is the luckiest
woman in the world.

HARLEY'S: Harley & Phillip move to the couch, where they continue
making out. Phillip wants to make love to Harley, & asks if she still
wants him to go. She wants him to stay right where he is. Phillip
wants this to be like their first time, eyes open, no pretending.
Harley says she'll give it her best shot. They kiss some more.

FIREHOUSE: Jenna wanders around, at loose ends. She leans back against
the door & is startled when someone knocks loudly. She opens the door
& finds Nola & Buzz there. When Buzz sees Jenna, he asks Nola why she
brought him there, when she promised to bring him someplace safe. "It
is safe," says Nola. "It's your home."

LEWIS OIL: Annie casually checks out Cassie's desk as Cassie & Hart
leave the file room, still talking about their plan. Annie starts to
get in the elevator, when her ears perk up. She hears Cassie say that
she'll make hotel reservations & that she could be holding Tammy in
her arms tomorrow, thanks to Hart. They agree that they have to get
their stories straight for Dinah.

Annie gets into the elevator unseen, angry at Cassie for trying to
double-cross her. "You just try it," she dares, as the screen fades to
black.
