                        GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE
                      TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1996

Highlights: a glimpse of Vanessa...

Spaulding Den: Philip asks Alan to help him bury Alan Michael as revenge
for setting him up for murder five years ago.

Spaulding Enterprises: Alan Michael speaks to someone named Clay,
arranging a meeting. In the outer office, Lucy is distraught by Alan
Michael's latest dirty tricks. Enter Zachary asking, "So what did he do
this time?"

Bridget's Bedroom: She's putting on make up for the grand reopening of
Company, talking to her mirror and bemoaning Hart's blindness. She's also
worried about what Roger may do. Suddenly there's a knock at her
door--it's Dinah and Hart to accuse her of giving their incriminating photo
to the police. Bridget denies all.

Bauer Kitchen. Rick and Michelle are attempting to get ready for the
party. Both are nervous about their dates, causing them to squabble about
the messy house and dirty laundry (how apropos for a soap opera!). Enter
Abby, and Rick is enchanted.

Spaulding Enterprises: Although Lucy tries to deny it at first she finally
admits Alan Michael is up to his old tricks against Philip. (She also asks
how Zachary always knows when something is up: does he have ESP?) Zachary
encourages them to attend the party so Alan Michael will remember what's
important. Enter Alan Michael, claiming that a late business meeting will
prevent him from attending the party.

Spaulding Den: Philip tells Alan that Alan Michael sabotaged his most
recent deal for Spaulding and that he holds Alan Michael responsible for
the end of his marriage to Beth, since all his problems began five years
ago. He wants Alan Michael to feel his pain and to lose everyone he cares
about, just as he did. Alan counsels Philip to call a truce, go back to
Beth, forgive and forget.

Boarding House Kitchen: Matt and Quint are sitting around when Nola enters
with the check Vanessa wrote to Matt to finance taking care of Bill. She
says she found it in Bill's underwear drawer when she was putting away
clothes, along with a paper of forged signatures. She surmises Bill wants
to try and cash the check so he can run away, and that J was somehow
helping him. Quint reluctantly agrees.

Outside the Front of Company: J and Bill discuss the check and practicing
the signature. Bill wants to cash it right away so he can leave town
before it gets cold. J tries to stall him, reminding him he could get
arrested for forgery.

Bridget's Bedroom: Bridget squirms to avoid responsibility for the
picture. Enter Peter, who gets a hug and kiss from Hart. Hart then sends
Peter to his room so he can "talk to Mommy." He warns if he ever finds out
she was responsible for giving the picture to the police, he will sue her
for custody of Peter.. They exit and Bridget cries, until Roger pops out
of her closet. She is frightened, but he convinces her he means no harm.
He has heard all. Bridget is really angry at Dinah; she reminds Roger that
if Hart takes Peter away from her, he won't get to see Peter either.

Spaulding Enterprises: Zachary agrees to accompany a reluctant Lucy to the
Company party. Alan Michael doesn't want her to wait because Clay has
requested a confidential meeting. They exit and Clay enters. Alan Michael
tells him it appears that his brother has made a big mistake.

Spaulding Den: When Alan asks Philip if he intends to go after Lucy and
break up Alan Michael's marriage, Philip assures him he would never sink
that low. After all, he's a Spaulding by "slight of hand" rather than by
birth. Although Alan begs him, Philip says he can't go back to Beth and
Lizzie--there's nothing left for him. He is glad, however, that he has a
father back--someone he can trust again. Enter Amanda announcing, "Oh,
Philip, if only you knew....." Alan shudders in fright.

A Swiss Convent: Vanessa is lying flat on her back in bed talking to her
doctor. She's upset she can't move her legs and couldn't get out of bed
this morning. The doctor cautions her against too much hope. He says when
the cure works it takes a long time. She wants to hear something hopeful.

Boarding House Kitchen: Matt feels he's let Vanessa down about Bill. Nola
and Quint try to comfort him; he's doing the best he can and he just lost
his mother. Enter J. Nola and Quint question him about the signature
forgeries: Did he encourage Bill? Enter Bill, replying no--I did it all
myself. J doesn't correct this false impression.

Bauer Kitchen: Abby wants to help Rick clean up the kitchen but he's
uncomfortable having her help. They finally agree not to clean, just go to
the party. Michelle undergoes a major fashion crisis, changing clothes at
least twice. Before she can change again, enter Zachary, followed by Lucy,
who identifies herself as the evening's fifth wheel. Michelle is less than
thrilled by the addition to their group.

Outside Bridget's Bedroom: Hart and Dinah fight and then cuddle with
regard to the events of their day. He wants her to move to the farm.
Enter Roger. Hart orders him to stay away from Dinah. Roger claims he
means no harm and look, he's brought Leo to tell them something important.
After much prodding, a reluctant Leo admits he gave the incriminating
picture to the police. Dinah doesn't believe him. Enter Bridget. When
Leo repeats his claim, she's surprised, but glad to accept his words. Hart
apologies to Bridget; she invites Dinah and Hart to the grand opening.
Exit Roger with Leo.

Company: Roger's alone with a flashlight. He's plotting, claiming he and
Bridget will need each other. He spins the new (?) chandelier.

Boarding House Kitchen: Bill and Matt argue about where Bill will live.
Nola and Quint try unsuccessfully to smooth things over. Finally, Matt
says he will sign the money over to Bill--that's what Vanessa wanted--but
he can't just hand him cash. It must be in a trust, overseen by a third
party. Bill storms out in disgust. When Nola and Quint try to apologize
to J for unjustly accusing him, he storms out, too. Enter Bridget,
inviting them all to the party. Quint chimes in, "Me, too?" and Nola
agrees.

Switzerland: Vanessa is sound asleep. The doctor and a nun discuss her
case. The nun feels badly Vanessa left behind such a beautiful family.
They both admit this treatment has not been wildly successful; in fact
another patient just died last night.

Spaulding Den: Amanda announces to Philip that he has no idea what Alan
has done on his behalf. Alan turns white, but Amanda doesn't reveal all
her cards. After Philip leaves she reasserts her control over Alan,
taunting him to tell Philip the truth. In disgust, Alan says OK--as long
as you confess how you doctored that letter that has pitted your brothers
against each other.

Spaulding Enterprises: Clay and Alan Michael continue their meeting. Alan
Michael says Philip really blew this deal and that Clay needs to watch him.
Exit Clay and enter Philip. He admits to Alan Michael that he made a
large error and begs him for another chance.

Company: The party's in full swing as Bridget wheels a cake into the
center of the room, directly under the chandelier. Roger is hiding in the
shadows, observing all. As the frame freezes, the chandelier crashes into
Bridget and the cake.
