GL UPDATE 10/3/96

JAIL

Fletcher is trying to console Griffin. All Griffin can think of is Marcus.

COURTHOUSE

In the hall, Dahlia consoles Marcus who goes through the usual soap tirade
whenever anyone is betrayed.
In the courtroom, Blake and Ross arrive for Roger's competancy hearing.
Blake is dreading the whole thing, but she wants to know right away if Roger
is going free. Ross tells her he's doing everything he can to make sure that
doesn't happen. Roger comes in. "Make sure what doesn't happen?"

JESSUP FARM

Hart and Dinah are in the barn being all giddy about their engagement.
Bridget climbs up to the window to peek in. Hart catches her.

*Spinning Lighthouse*

JESSUP BARN

Hart accuses Bridget of snooping. She says she wants to discuss Peter's
preschool, then spies the ring on Dinah's finger (as she waves it around).
She asks if it's what she thinks it is. Dinah says yes, and gloats. Bridget
points out that she's still married to Roger; Dinah says it's not a problem.
Bridget leaves. Hart wonders why she's snooping around.

COURTHOUSE

Roger arrives and goes up to Blake. Ross leaps in, telling Roger to stop lying
to his wife about his recovery. Dr. Madden leads Roger away, straight into
Holly. Roger continues the act. Holly is having none of it. He squeezes out
a few tears, apologizes more. She is still not buying it and walks into the
courtroom.

JESSUP FARMHOUSE

Bridget hasn't *quite* left yet. She searches through dresser drawers and
finds the picture of Dinah and Hart in the Caymens. She hesitates, then takes
the picture saying "You both deserve what you get."

COURTHOUSE

In the hallway, Marcus continues with the cliches. Dahlia tells him he's
wrong; she knows because she's been there. Marcus tells her he never should
have exposed her mother's occupation [*now* he gets it] and he should never
have trusted his father. They would've been better off. Dahlia disagrees.
Marcus reminds her she hates her mother just like he now hates his father for
lying to him. Dahlia says no, she was wrong about that and that he is too.

JAIL

Fletcher tells Griffin that Marcus will come around. He asks Fletch why he
didn't turn Griffin in while he was on the stand. Fletch says he knew Griffin
would do the right thing. He says Griffin made a real big mistake but did it
for the right reasons. He felt he was unable to help the people of Fifth St.
any other way and his passion took over. He knows Griffin wouldn't do that
sort of thing just for personal gain. Griff says that's where he's wrong.

COURTHOUSE

In the waiting room, Dr. Madden and Roger talk about the confrontation with
Holly. The doc says Holly has no idea the amount of improvement Roger has
made. [Okay, who *else* thinks that before this is all over, Roger will be
sleeping with the doc?] She goes to see when the hearing is going to start.
Roger fantasizes about Holly's testimony. In the fantasy, Holly manages
to goad him into revealing his anger. She gloats as the orderlies take him
away in a straight jacket.
Fade back to reality. Bridget comes in. She shows him the picture: "This
is your ticket out of here."

JAIL

This is arguably the best scene of the whole day. Griffin explains that his
mistake was he lied for himself, not to help people. Fletch doesn't believe
him. Griff explains how after Alan revealed his near-miss (or should that
be near-hit?) with Gilly, no one returned his calls. He describes how hard
he worked from voter registration in the 60s, getting beat up, etc. until
now, the President of the United States returns his phone calls. Then along
comes Vivian Grant and her 20 year
lie. She was so caught up in protecting herself that she didn't reveal the
truth until Gilly was half naked in Griffin's bedroom. And now, even the
President of the Little League won't return his phone calls.
Fletcher still thinks he was trying to save his reputation so he could
help people. Griff tells him to wake up. Why did Griff's wife leave him?
Because it was all about image. Fletcher still disagrees. He says Griffin
didn't take so many risks to help himself. Griff says maybe not at first, but
somewhere it got swtiched--it was more about helping himself than helping
others. He destroyed his son's love just so he could see how great everyone
thought he was.
He tells Fletch he can quote him: "Everything I've done has been for
Griffin Williams." Fletch asks him "What now?" Griffin doesn't know.
Fletch gives him a knowing look and walks off.

JESSUP FARM

Hart and Dinah start to get down to it in the hay, when Dinah shrieks that
something bit her. Hart tells her to relax, it was only the hay. They
continue to be nauseatingly goofy, Hart gets ready to muck the stalls and
teases Dinah about helping him. A truck pulls up outside the barn and drops
of a *beautiful* Apaloosa mare. Dinah bought him a horse to start off his
new breeding stock. They take off on a ride, bareback.

[Aside from a bunch of other holes in this scene, why would Hart be mucking
out the stalls? I was under the impression that he had to sell off all his
horses when Roger bought the farm? Exactly what is he mucking?]

COURTHOUSE

In the waiting room, Bridget tells Roger about Hart and Dinah's engagement.
She tells Roger Hart has been leading her on for weeks (huh?) and then asked
Dinah to marry him. Roger innocently says the picture could really get Dinah
and Hart in a lot of trouble; it could send them to jail. He also says he
wishes there were a way for Bridget to feel better (*hint hint*). Bridget
leaves to "make myself feel better." Roger smiles, as only Roger can.

In the hallway, Dahlia tries to convince Marcus that his dad was just trying
to help the 5th St. folks. Marcus relates a lifetime of Griffin not being
there for big important events because he was out "doing the right thing."
Dahlia continues to try to convince Marcus (whose Cancer necklace has been
replaced by a Scorpio necklace?) that his dad loves him, but to no avail. She
talks about all the work they did together on 5th St.--still nothing. Dahlia
thinks he should work things out with Griffin. Marcus says "Like you did with
your mother?" They bond over similar situations. Dahlia reminds him of the
larger cause--5th Street. She tries to convince him to keep working. Marcus
is tired of talking, and asks her to leave him alone for awhile.
In the courtroom, Holly and Blake speculate on the outcome of the hearing.
Ross comes up and Holly relates her meeting with Roger at the Hospital. Ross
asks her to be a witness and she agrees. Fletch comes up during all this and
is *not* at all pleased that Holly went to see Roger. He hauls her out into
the hallway because "I have something to say to you and it's not very
politically correct."
The bailiff comes in and hands Frank an envelope. It's a picture of Hart
and Dinah in the Caymens. (Bridget watches from a doorway.) A letter enclosed
tells Frank Hart and Dinah have been lying the whole time, details the whole
plot, and tells him to go to the Jessup Farm for more proof, signed
"anonymous." Our hero blinks a couple of times and then rushes out. [That
boy will make detective yet!]

In the hallway, Fletch and Holly argue. He tells her she's not
testifying. Holly says she is. Holly refuses to let Roger walk all over her
and everyone else. She says she has to protect Blake. Fletch says he's
trying to do the same for Holly and pleads with her not to take the stand.
Roger and his entourage of mental health care professionals wander into
the court room. Blake says to Ross, "God forgive me for saying this, but
please don't let my father get set loose today."
The judge enters; the hearing begins.

JESSUP FARM

Fresh from their ride, Dinah and Hart are back in the barn all giddy. Hart
decides to thank Dinah for his gift, so they "hit the hay."

JAIL

Griffin in his cell, pacing thoughtfully. He asks out loud "What the hell
kind of man am I?" Marcus steps up and says "I think I can answer that for
you."

(commercial)

Marcus tells Griff that his actions were inexcusable and that he is a selfish
hypocrite. BUT he will not let the "Williams" name go down in flames. He
is picking up the reins and carrying on the fight for 5th Street. He walks
off.

PRISON

Dahlia greets a surprised Tina. Dahlia apologizes for being so mean to her.
They hug, say "I love you" and agree to start over.

COURTHOUSE

Ross's opening statement in a nutshell: "Roger is still crazy and a menace to
society."

JESSUP FARM

Hart and Dinah smooching in the straw. A voice behind them says "Damn, it's
true." They look up and see Frank. "You've been lying the whole time."
Freeze frame on their stunned faces.
