The night of Ed & Eve's engagement party...

BOARDINGHOUSE: Dylan, Frank & Carroll look for Matt, but he's not there.
Dylan wants to talk to Matt before telling Bridget that her brother might
have been involved in the hijacking. Carroll notices Frank playing with
the scrimshaw keychain & recognizes it as the one Matt was twirling when
he asked for a ride. Dylan takes this as confirmation that Matt was
involved, although he was hoping it wasn't true.

COUNTRY CLUB: Matt's on the phone, talking sweet to Vanessa. "Hurry up &
get here; I miss you." Jet arrives & pulls her brother off the phone. He
says he's looking forward to the evening. Bill eyes Matt with slight
suspicion as Eve, Michelle & Ed descend the stairs into the ballroom.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex is on the phone, confirming that Nick will meet
with Sam Hutchison tonight in the Bahamas. Mindy paces sullenly. Alex
says she won't be accompanying her son.

ALAN'S LAIR: Susan concludes the phone call with Alex & tells Alan
everything is set.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex tells Nick if he pulls the deal off, it will be
enough to raise him a notch in the board members' eyes & guarantee him
the presidency. Nick preens & Mindy broods.

ALAN'S LAIR: Alan equips Susan with a dossier on Nick & sends her off to
the Bahamas. "Tonight my sister's would-be Prince of Spaulding learns
what it's like to play against the master."

COUNTRY CLUB: David introduces Gabriella to Gilly. We learn that Sid has
a late meeting with a new client. David boasts about Gilly's
accomplishments to Gabby, who gets uncomfortable & excuses herself.

Bridget greets Eve, who expresses her regret about the breakup with
Dylan. Blake goes over some catering plans with Eleni, Frank & Buzz, &
reminds them that there must be two bowls of punch: one with alcohol &
one without. Frank spots Matt.

Matt thanks Bridget for getting Dylan to keep quiet about his "wanted in
Indiana" status. Bill berates Michelle for mooning over her much-too-old
cousin & adds, "Besides, he's got a girl." "Who?" asks Michelle with
concern as Vanessa & Josh enter. Van & Matt lock eyes across the room.
Tangie (with hair artfully curled) & AM arrive. AM gives Michelle a bear
hug. Ed asks his nephew about his recent adventures, but AM & Tangie
evade with promises of later.

Roger signals Blake through an interior window. She rushes out to the
anteroom, where she reminds him he's not been invited. Rog waves the
trust papers at her & tries to get her to sign them, but she adamantly
refuses. "If you don't go away, I will," she promises, & heads for the
door. "Don't follow me!" she warns. She goes back to the ballroom &
closes the door behind her. Rog peers through the window at Buzz, who is
manning the bar. Ed & Eve nuzzle a bit, then Eve breaks away to chide
Buzz for pouring booze in the punch. Buzz explains that there's one with
& one without alcohol. "Oh no, none with!" exclaims Eve. Buzz says he'll
check, but Ed stops him & says it's fine. He takes a glass of punch from
the other bowl & asks Eve to taste it. She confirms that it's straight
fruit juice & Ed takes the glass. He explains that he's been sober for 13
years & it's OK for him to be around people who are drinking as long as
she's with him. Eve decides she has to go apologize to Buzz. She runs off
& Roger approaches Ed. Rog apologizes for intruding but says he & Ed have
to talk about Chrissy. "Correct me if I'm wrong," says Ed, "but the last
time you crashed an engagement party, you were shot." [ROTFL!]

ALAN'S LAIR: Jenna arrives & Alan asks if she's done her job. She assures
him that Sid will be along momentarily, though she has no idea why Alan
wants him. Alan promises imminent enlightenment as Sid knocks. When Jenna
answers, Sid warns her about wasting his time again. She invites him in &
Alan greets him. Sid recognizes Alan & is bowled over. Seems he's a fan
of Alan's & has followed his career avidly. Sid is, of course, surprised
to see Alan out of jail, but Alan assures him it's all legal. "It's kind
of like being a virgin again," he jokes. Sid wonders what he can do for
Alan. "The question is, what can we do for each other?" responds Alan.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alone with Nick, Alex says she'll represent him at the
engagement party & is glad he took "a strong stand" with Mindy. Nick asks
what Alex didn't want to say in front of Mindy. Alex says if in the
course of the deal, he finds it necessary to offer any of the Lewis Oil
accounts, he shouldn't hesitate. Nick balks, saying that could cost Lewis
a lot of money. Alex says he should close the deal "no matter what you
have to do." Mindy bounces in with an uncharacteristic smile on her face:
"I only packed you one suit, so you'll have to come home tomorrow!" Nick
apologizes to her for taking off on such short notice. He promises that
everything will to come together for them soon & asks her to contact the
adoption agency while he's gone. She gives him a hug & pledges her love,
but her face falls again as Alex sends Nick off.

ALAN'S LAIR: Sid asks about Alan's plans for returning to Spaulding. Alan
says his friends are working on it as they speak. Alan wants a bright,
young lawyer to put out some fires for him, handle a few matters, & when
he is back at the helm of Spaulding, that lawyer could take over as
corporate counsel (currently Ross Marler). Since Sid is so new to Alan,
he wants some demonstration of his skills. Alan's first assignment will
involve Sid testing his powers of persuasion on Ross Marler.

COUNTRY CLUB: Ross tells Blake that the point of a job is to have money
coming in, not going out, therefore he will not invest in Frank's
detective agency. Blake thinks Ross is sexy when he's stingy. Ross says
he can't afford to invest, anyway. Blake says she's seen his "other
account book" & knows they're rich. Ross explains that book is money he
is holding in escrow for Spaulding. He controls it, but it's not his.
"And we certainly can't touch it."

Matt & Van exchange a meaningful look. David wants to know why Gabby
bolted on Gilly. She was scared Gilly would expose her on the news. David
says Gilly would never do that. "I want you to stick around so you can
see how people who aren't always running scared live their lives," he
says. He says as soon as they identify the keychain owner, she'll be able
to lead a normal life. "Brace yourself," he warns her. "You're about to
meet my mother." Mrs. Grant enters with Eve. The two are laughing
together like they're best buddies (no doubt because Mrs. Grant wants to
get in good with the Chief of Staff's future wife).

Josh greets Tangie & they exchange pleasantries. He asks if she & AM are
an item. "You want to talk about it?" he asks. "Not until I know what it
is," she replies with a smile. Frank asks Josh to come outside.

In the anteroom, Ed asks Rog to give him the scoop on AM, Tangie & the
shooting at the beach. Rog says the victim was part of a witness
protection program. Rog asks Ed to help him save Chrissy's life.

ALAN'S LAIR: Sid says Ross taught him everything he knows. Jenna reminds
him that he's gone up against Ross & won. She tells Alan that Sid was
Van's lawyer in the custody case. Alan says it wasn't a total victory.
"You compromised; I never do." Sid asks exactly what Alan wants him to
persuade Ross to do. Alan knows that there's now a rift between Ross &
Van because of the custody case. He wants Sid to persuade Ross to donate
money to Van's new charity. It doesn't matter how much; it's a symbolic
gesture. What counts is Sid's ability to persuade Ross to write the
check, knowing Van's feelings. Sid promises to try & takes his leave.
Alan congratulates Jenna: "There's something Faustian about your lawyer.
He's not ready to sell his soul, but he's quick to play the ballgame."
Jenna says Sid is hungry & Alan has quite a few carrots to dangle. "And I
have a special one in mind for Mr. Dickerson," Alan muses.

COUNTRY CLUB: Mrs. Grant grills Gabby-- what college does she attend?
Gabby says she doesn't. "Well, it's not for everyone," says Vivian down
her nose. "Where did you grow up?" David tries to come to the rescue, but
Gabby says she can't take it & walks off. David goes after her, but Frank
grabs him to tell him they've ID'd the owner of the keychain. David is
glad Matt's off the hook, but Frank says Matt's their man. David first
worries about Bridget then runs to warn Gabby.

Mindy arrives & spots Fletch. They greet enthusiastically. She says Nick
was called away on business. Fletch thinks she's not as comfortable about
that as she pretends. [Sparks are flying, folks, mark my words!]

In the anteroom, Ed angrily tells Rog he wouldn't help Alan regain
control of Spaulding if his life depended on it. He doesn't understand
what the big deal is, since Alan won't be out of prison for months. Ed
storms back into the ballroom & Rog follows him, shaking his head. He
spots Alex but keeps walking. Alex tells Buzz she needs a drink; he tells
her she needs a hoop [a reference to their recent basketball game in the
diner back alley]. She asks him how he manages to do so much. "I'm stupid
& I don't mind getting in over my head," he answers. "Well, I wish I
couldn't say the same thing!" she replies. They share a laugh.

Alan quietly enters the anteroom & peers through the window into the
ballroom. He sees Matt talking to Bridget & Ed talking to Eve. His gaze
returns to Matt. Dylan walks over to Vanessa & takes her across Alan's
field of vision. Alan remains focused on Matt, then switches to Tangie &
AM. He turns away from the window & sighs quietly.

In the ballroom, Bill admits to Michelle that he doesn't know Matt's
girlfriend's name. She says he shouldn't spread rumors if he doesn't have
all the facts. Bill vows to get the name & goes off on his quest.

Frank approaches Matt & invites him to tour the grounds. Bridget wants to
come along. Frank tries to dissaude her, but she insists on joining them.

Gilly tells her mom she doesn't know how involved David & Gabby are.
Vivian doesn't know "how he could possibly see anything in her." She says
Gabby can't contribute anything & David needs more of a challenge. Gilly
wisely keeps her mouth shut & Sid arrives in time to save her from
further conversation with the wicked Viv, who pleasantly greets the
"successful" Sid & departs in pursuit of less business-oriented
discussion. Sid is excited & Gilly asks what has him "so turned on."
"Besides you?" he asks. He tells her he just met with Alan. Gilly warns
him to be careful; even Rog is scared of Alan. Sid knows, but thinks he
can score big as long as he keeps his wits about him.

Lillian walks by & stops in front of the window as if she's seen a ghost.
She rushes into the anteroom, but finds it empty.

Back in the ballroom, Mindy offers her congratulations to Eve, who
accepts them gracefully. "I feel like we've both gotten what we wanted &
we're both happy," Eve says. Mindy doesn't look nearly as happy as Eve.
Eve thanks Mindy for coming & moves on to other guests. Mindy thanks
Fletch for encouraging her to do the right thing.

Alex finally hooks up with Ed & wishes him & Eve the best. She spots
Lillian in the anteroom & joins her. Lillian says she saw Alan, but Alex
says it's impossible. AM enters but when he sees Alex & Lillian together,
he excuses himself. Alex tells Lillian she's just tired & suggests she go
home to bed, as Alex herself is about to do. Lillian rolls her eyes.

Blake sees Rog & urges him to get lost. He finally leaves. Blake runs
into Holly, who is surprised to hear that Rog was there & runs after him.
Ed approaches Blake to talk about Alan. She sighs with exasperation &
puts her drink down on the bar. Ed says Rog is just concerned about
Blake's safety, as is he. He urges her to sign the papers, but Blake
refuses. Eve comes by to say it's toast time. She takes glasses of punch
from the bar & hands them to Blake & Ed. Ross starts his toast: "Here's
to truly the best man in the room, my oldest & dearest friend, Ed Bauer."

BOARDINGHOUSE: Gabby is feeling sorry for herself & wonders why David
hangs around with her at all. "What am I, your good deed?" She thinks he
feels guilty, "like some spoiled rich kid." David denies. Gabby pouts &
says maybe David just wants what every guy wants, except he's pretending
to be nice & patient. David says that's not it either; he's worried about
her now that they have ID'd the keychain owner: Matt Reardon.

POTTING SHED: Matt, Jet & Frank enter as Matt wonders what the big deal
is about a potting shed. Dylan asks what Jet is doing there. Frank says
he couldn't stop her. Josh & Van enter as well. Josh obviously knows the
score. Jet protests that Dylan promised her he wouldn't do this. Van
looks concerned. Frank says the police aren't involved. "Yet," adds Josh.
Matt asks what the hell is going on. Van has no idea; Dylan told her it
had to do with the hijacking.

Dylan lays out the evidence: "Hijacking, accidents, trashing the site..."
Jet says Matt had nothing to do with it. Dylan is sorry, but the
hijackers had a guy on his truck the night it was hijacked. A guy on his
crew to be their eyes & ears. Someone to sabatoge equipment & check up on
Dylan's plans. A guy he caught coming out of the trailer, burning his
records. Vanessa looks like she wants to say something, but doesn't.
Dylan goes on. He can't forgive that this was the same guy who lived down
the hall from him, played the good brother, held their baby. "Why??"

HOTEL ROOM/SPAULDING MANSION: Nick flips through a travel brochure &
glances at the note from Sam Hutchison while he waits for Alex to answer
the phone in Springfield. He thinks Sam Hutchison is a woman because the
note is perfumed & he received a basket of fruit. The note says, "Looking
forward to a lovely evening, Sam." As Nick is talking, we see Susan
drawing the curtains in her room & dimming the lights. Alex warns him to
keep his mind on business & not be distracted by a pleasant evening with
a beautiful woman. Nick declares his preference for Mindy. He just wants
to sign the deal & "get the hell out of here." Nick thinks Alex sounds
worried. She tells him about Lillian's supposed sighting of Alan &
reminds him about the reappearing clock. She'd like Nick to close the
deal & hurry home ASAP. He promises to call in the morning. They hang up
& Donna announces Roger, who "had to come before it's too late."

POTTING SHED: Matt says they have the wrong guy. Josh says they don't.
Jet protests Matt's innocence to Dylan. Matt says he'd never hurt anyone.
"Everyone here has been to good to me. Whose idea was this, anyway?
Josh?" Josh goes outside & comes back with Carroll, who identifies Matt
as they guy who tried to hitch a ride. Matt says he got his own way to
Springfield & wasn't part of any hijacking. Frank produces the keychain &
asks if it looks familiar. Matt & Van exchange worried glances.

BALLROOM: Ross continues his toast: "When I was dating Blake, the two of
you advised me to leave my senses & follow my heart. I'm happy to see
tonight that you've taken you're own advice & that the physicians have
heeded themselves." He wishes them every happiness & knows they'll
succeed because they have the essential ingredient: love.

Before anyone has a chance to drink, Michelle asks to make the next
toast. She tells about finding her mom's wallet & feeling guilty about
being happy with someone else. When she told Vanessa, Van advised her not
to close herself off from any happiness, "just like my mom would say. I
want to make a toast to Ed & Eve &, uh, my dad, & all those good feelings
that our family is going to have." Everyone raises their glasses as Ross
says, "Hear, hear!" Ed sips from his glass, pauses for a fraction of a
second with the glass still to his lips, then downs the rest in one gulp.
He stares down at the hand holding the glass with worried recognition.

POTTING SHED: Carroll remembers Matt twirling the keychain. Matt admits
it's his. Dylan thanks Carroll, who leaves. Matt admits he hitched a ride
on the truck because he was broke & had no other way to get to Spring-
field. He didn't know it was Dylan's truck. He slept most of the way
until he woke up & saw the guys w/ black masks & guns. He pulled the tarp
over himself & waited until he could get away, then ran. That's when he
probably dropped the keychain. Josh asks why he didn't go to the police.
Matt says he called anonymously as soon as he got to town & if he could
have done more, he would have. Dylan asks what Matt told the police. He
says he told them about seeing the dragon tattoo on a hijacker's
shoulder. "You find that guy, you've got your hijackers," he promises.

BOARDINGHOUSE: With alarm, Gabby asks David if he's sure about Matt. She
thinks it's awful & asks what will happen to him. David thinks he'll
probably just split. He's more concerned about Jet & Gabby. He suggests
that he & Gabby switch rooms, so in case Matt comes after Gabby, he'll be
surprised by David instead. Gabby agrees with relief & gives David a hug.
He tells her to lock the door & leaves. She paces to the window, closes
the curtains, then sits on the bed & turns out the light. She lifts her
dress off & we see a dragon tattoo on her right shoulder, above her slip.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex tells Rog to go home to bed, as she is about to
do. He says she won't when she hears him out. "If you're here to talk
alliance, I'm not interested," she says. Even against Alan? Alex says she
has plenty of time before Alan gets out. "Too late, honey," says Rog. He
hands Alex the release papers. "He's out & he's already after you."

BAHAMAS HOTEL: Nick knocks on Susan's door. Susan answers & introduces
herself as Sam Hutchison. Nick eyes her & gives her an odd sort of half-
smile as the screen fades to black.
