GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS
* Alex & Rog discuss Alan's impending return
* Tangie sends father & son off to their meeting
* Vanessa & Matt play some games
* Gabby & David have a romantic dinner
* Harry threatens Tangie again

Evening in Springfield, USA...

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex palms a basketball & informs Nick & Mindy that
she's installing a court on the grounds. The dynamic duo are less than
enthralled. Roger barges in & suggests that it might be in Alex's best
interests to talk to him about "that master game player," Alan.

BOATHOUSE: Alan lurks outside, hesitant about knocking. Inside, AM
dresses in Tangie's favorite sleepshirt (a white button-down that just
happens to fit him perfectly). AM doesn't know what to expect from his
dad, but figures the important thing is to warn him about Harry Jones. AM
excuses himself (to the bathroom, I suppose) & Tangie answers a knock at
the door. She joins Alan outside. He asks her to take a walk with him.

LEWIS HOUSE: Vanessa lays on the floor & stares at the sleeping Matt. She
smiles as his eyelids quiver & helps him to sit up. She cradles his head
as she asks him some orientation questions to which he gives groggy,
sarcastic answers. She asks what he's doing there. He explains that he
came to say good-bye & was going to write her a letter. He doesn't know
how he got on the floor. She tells him he took some sleeping pills. He
remembers having a killer headache. Josh knocks on the door & Van sends a
shaky Matt behind the plastic partition, where he climbs into the (empty)
hot tub & hunkers down. Van picks up Matt's cup of coffee. Josh comes in
& asks what Van's doing with a whole pot of coffee if she's having so
much trouble sleeping.

Van says it's decaf. She asks after Peter & Josh says he's fine & Jet is
happy to have him since she's so upset about Matt leaving town. Josh
likens Matt to the "strays" that Van hopes to help with her Family
Friends organization. She stops him with a reminder of his own misspent
youth. "That was a rite of passage, not a way of life," protests Josh.
Van says he sounds like someone who sleeps in a tie. Van thinks Matt is a
fine young man & lists his attributes: sensitive, intelligent, living
life on his own terms. Matt nods enthusiastically as Van goes on about
the problems facing today's youth. Josh decides it's not worth fighting
about. Van apologizes for her fervor. Josh just thought that Matt might
not have been who he seemed to be & that he might have had some kind of
agenda, & when it didn't pan out, he left town. Van starts to argue, but
thinks the better of it. Instead, she gives Josh some stuff to take to
Mindy & he leaves as she yawns that she's very tired.

Matt emerges & says Josh was right -- he does have an agenda: "I'd like
to crawl into that bed right now & make love to you all night long." Van
suppresses a smile.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex is not interested in anything Rog has to say
about Alan or anything else. Mindy notes that Rog has always hated Alex;
he counters that she's always liked the guy, so who will she be siding
with? Mindy stands firmly with her husband. Rog prevails on Alex for 5
minutes of her private time. Nick & Mindy depart. Rog says Alan is out to
destroy Alex & her son.

BOATHOUSE: AM buttons a pair of black slacks (where did he get them?) as
Tangie tells him she has to go out. He hands her the little gun for
protection. She wishes him luck with his dad & promises to be waiting for
him when he returns. AM feels if he can set things right with Alan, then
everything else in his life will fall into place. He kisses her on the
forehead & she leaves.

BOARDINGHOUSE: David & Gabriella have a candlelight dinner in her room.
She guesses that he led a privileged life & he confirms it, but also
tells her about his brushes with the law. Gabby doesn't understand why he
wasn't happy with what he had. She thinks he's lucky to have good friends
that are like a real family. She feels like she's missed out on this in
her life. David says he & his friends have not all led rosy lives & they
have just done the best they could. Gabby could do this too; she took the
first step by telling the truth to Cutter. Her next step should be to
trust him & tell him what's bothering her.

LEWIS HOUSE: Vanessa is not amused by Matt's idea of how to spend the
evening. She takes him to task for passing out in her bedroom & tells him
about the close call with Bridget. It made her feel very guilty, because
Matt is leaving because of her. She doesn't think he should leave his
family. She suggests that he call Jet & tell her he's going to stay. He
says he'll only do it is Van also tells him she wants him to stay. She
admits it & he kisses her.

BOATHOUSE: AM seals a letter & remembers his father's words to him -- he
carries the strength of all the Spauldings wherever he goes.

BEACH: As they sit on the sand, Tangie encourages Alan to talk about his
troubles. He won't tell her, but says he can't bear to be alone. He asks
if he can hold her for a few moments & she lets him embrace her.

BOATHOUSE: AM leaves. Harry Jones & pal arrive. They pick the lock &
Harry says they'll be waiting for Tangie when she gets back.

BEACH: Alan says he's always believed he could do anything, if only he
had the will. Even when his life went wrong, he didn't despair; he fixed
things. He's been planning for the past 5 years for no surprises. "What
hubris," he admits. His pride destroyed someone who loved him very much,
someone who could have meant a great deal to him. "That someone was
my..." He trails off. "It also cost me you," Alan says, although quickly
conceding that he never actually had Tangie in the first place, he
realizes his secretiveness & arrogance ruined any chance they might have
had. Tangie turns away. "I guess it wasn't meant to be," Alan says. He
gets up & walks off.

ALAN'S LAIR: Alan leaves a letter for Susan, telling her where to find
his will & other legal documents in case he doesn't return.

SPAULDING MANSION: Rog explains his theory that Alan sent the dinner
invitation to him & Holly. He points out how strange it was that Alan
would invite everyone, including the maids, to prison. Alex thinks it's
right in character: "If he'd had his druthers, he would have had us bring
the household furniture as well." She then admits Alan might have done
it, but can't imagine why. Rog says it's to put the 2 of them at odds.
Alex says he could have saved the effort; she already doesn't respect or
trust Rog. Rog says he doesn't feel the same way about her. He recalls
the glory days of bringing down Alan together. "And being together may be
the only way we can protect ourselves from his retaliation."

LEWIS HOUSE: Van tries to figure out a way to get Matt out of the house
without everyone in the house seeing them. She decides they'll have to
wait until everyone's gone to bed. Matt thinks it's a good opportunity to
get to know each other better. She invites him to ask questions. He
wonders how sleeping pills got in the aspirin bottle. She tells him about
how she got hooked on tranquilizers. She did what addicts do -- hid her
pills, lied to everyone. Eventually she got better & they got hidden in
the back of a cabinet & she forgot about them. Matt thinks it was kind of
lucky that she forgot; if he hadn't taken them by accident & passed out
in her bedroom, he'd be long gone by now.

Now it's Van's turn to ask a question. Matt doesn't want her to turn the
tables, but she turns it into a game: Favorite things. He says it's easy:
"Your hair, your eyes, your lips," he responds. They play for real.

His favorite book: Catcher in the Rye; Hers: Love in the Time of Cholera

Her favorite scar: the one on her knee (she got a big ice cream treat for
being brave)

His: he asks Van to pick, since she knows where they all are. She says
he's breaking the rules. He picks the one on his arm, from when he broke
it & all the kids signed his cast. "You thought I was gonna say the one
on my--" She cuts him off: "I don't want to hear about that one!"

His favorite childhood memory: The time he hid in the back of his dad's
car & wound up in Grand Rapids & got to go on business calls with Dad.

Her favorite dream: It happened a few years after her mom died. She was
standing on a railroad platform at dusk. It was hot. The train came & her
mom was on it & she smiled at Vanessa. She was beautiful & content. The
train pulled away & she waved & wasn't sad.

His favorite dream: Riding a bronco in a rodeo, wowing the crowds, until
Bridget woke him up with an ice cube on the back of his neck.

They agree on their "favorite grown-up memory." [Take a guess, campers!]

Matt says the game didn't work; he still wants to kiss her. He starts
with her hand & when she doesn't resist, makes a beeline for her lips.
She gets into it for a bit, then pulls away. "This was a whole lot easier
when you were unconscious in my bed & I had to pretend you were a foot
spasm." :-) Matt obviously doesn't remember this, so she recaps for him.
They start laughing, then Van shushes them. He asks if it's safe to leave
yet; she says the family is still having coffee. He says she'd better
come up with another game, then. She promises to think of something while
Matt calls Jet. "I can't wait to see what you come up with."

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex says maybe Alan doesn't revenge on his mind. He's
full of surprises. She tells Rog about Alan's heroics in prison. But,
still a couple of months before he gets out, she adds, assuaging Rog's
temporary fear that Alex knew Alan had been sprung. She concludes that
she can handle Alan; Rog wonders about how well Nick will stand up to
him. Alex says Rog shouldn't underestimate Nick; Rog says Alex shouldn't
underestimate Alan.

Alan lurks in the hidden room, listening to this conversation. Rog says
Alan may have mellowed in prison, possibly even developed some health
problems. Has Alex had any word of anything like that? Alex says no, Alan
is healthy as a horse.

WRECKED BOAT HULL: AM arrives & calls out cautiously to his dad.

BOATHOUSE: Harry's partner Barry [yes, really!] ties Tangie up as she
sits facing Harry, who pulls out his pocketknife & advises her not to
struggle, because "Barry loves playing with his knives." Harry slices
open the letter left by AM & reads it aloud:

I still can't get over your generosity & understanding in helping me set
up this meeting tonight with my father. Somehow by the water seems a
fitting place for our reunion. I'll have a lot to tell you.

Tears roll down Tangie's face as Harry decides the reunion will be
touching, but also their last. He also talks about procuring funds for a
well-needed vacation. He displays Tangie's ATM card, which he cleverly
found in her wallet, & demands to know her "PIN number." [Isn't that
redundant? Personal Identification Number number?] She tells him the
number: 5342. Harry says since she's paying, she can come along. He goes
to get some money & leaves Barry in charge. Tangie tests her bonds while
Barry looks for food.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Gabby pours some brandy for herself & David, promising to
make it up to Bridget. They toast & sip, "like in the movies." She puts
on some music & says, "This is my movie & it's still going on." She
starts slow-dancing with David, who doesn't exactly push her away, but
does look decidedly uncomfortable as she snuggles up to him.

SPAULDING MANSION: Rog thinks Alan will come out fighting & offers his
help to Alex. She finds the idea laughable. He reminds her that it may be
her only recourse. Nick & Mindy decide it's time to return. Josh drops by
to give Mindy her stuff, but can't stay for dinner. Everyone leaves the
study & Alan emerges from hiding. He returns the clock & leaves again.

BOATHOUSE: Barry thinks Tangie is a "looker." Tangie concludes that he's
tied her up so she won't overpower him. "I'd sure like to see you try,"
Barry responds with a leer. They eye each other & he unties her. Slowly
she stands. Her back is to him & she pulls the little gun from under her
sweater & moves it behind her back as she turns to face him. "Go ahead,
make a run for it," he offers. "I have no intention of running," she
replies, as she points the gun at him.

BOARDINGHOUSE: David thinks being thisclose to Gabby isn't such a great
idea. She tells him to trust her. "Top Ten Reasons Why Gabriella Should
Be Trusted: 1. She came through for you with the fuzz. 2. She's a cheap
date. 3. She learned all the words to your favorite song -- Oh What a
Beautiful Morning. 4. You've gotten used to having me around." The door
opens & Kat walks in. [Whoa! This is some surprise! I hadn't heard a word
in the press or on the grapevine about Nia Long returning. Anyone else
had an inkling of this?]

LEWIS HOUSE: Matt is in the middle of a mysterious story about almost
running over a man. He got out & called to the guy, but the guy didn't
respond. Matt walked toward him & when he got close, the guy turned
around, grabbed Matt & called out his name. To be continued. She'll have
to invite him back to hear the rest of the story. He asks her to tell him
a love story. She tells about a woman who was sad & lonely & confused.
She went on a boat ride & fell off & was rescued by a handsome stranger
who made her feel alive & happy. But she had to say good-bye & go back to
her real life. Then the stranger left his magic cave & showed up -- plop-
- right in the middle of her real life. Contessa became confused again &
didn't know what to do. Matt says the first time she was confused, she
did what came naturally & trusted her instincts. And her friends who
really cared about her told her not to worry about society's rules as
long as she wasn't hurting anyone. Vanessa smiles. Matt reminds her how
much time they've spent talking about why their relationship couldn't
work & wonders what if they had spent that energy on trying to figure out
a way that it *could* work.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie finishes hog-tying Barry & warns him that the ropes
will get tighter if he struggles. She's picked up a few tricks in her
travels, she notes. As she runs out, Barry yells after her that Harry's
probably already killed both Alan & her little boyfriend.

BEACH: A man walks along the beach. He holds a gun & cocks it. "This is
for my son's life," vows Alan. He opens the door into the ship's hull &
raises the gun. He sees Alan-Michael & stops, stunned. As he walks toward
his son, a shot rings out & Alan pitches forward, grimacing in pain.
"Noooooooo!" screams Alan-Michael as he rushes to his dad & shields him
from further fire. Tangie walks in & stands in shock at her mistake as
the screen fades to black.
