			Guiding Light Update

				for

			Tuesday October 4

===============================================================================

[Once again, I screwed up and missed the first few minutes of the show of
shows. Hopefully, in seeing the rest of the show I caught all that was
important in this update, and nothing wonderfully insightful or hysterical
was said. Anyway, James' tape enters as...]

Eleni and Nadine and Buzz are talking about the future residence of the elder
Cooper couple. Eleni suggests that they move into the Diner, where they used
to live, all those years ago. She leaves, letting them debate the issue.
Nadine is into the idea. It will be just like the old days. Buzz is against it.
He says that Nadine is forgetting what the old days were like. Living over
the diner is smelly and gross and holds a lot of bad memories for him. These
were "the sights and sounds that made me feel trapped", he whines. Nadine
says she remembers, and seems to think of something else. She finally asks,
"Are you really serious about this marriage business?" He says absolutely.

Roger and Holly at Company:

Holly is postulating as to why a dying man (Alan) would be interested
in business and Roger and all this worldly stuff. She expects he would have
others things on his mind. Roger wonders if maybe he just wants to hurt them
all one last time. Maybe, even, he'd like to take Roger with him. Holly is
aghast and doesn't want Roger to even talk about that. Eve comes in and sits
at a nearby table. Roger excuses himself and goes to talk with Dr. Guthrie.
He brings out the vial and asks the good Doctor if she would be willing to
tell him a little more about what he has for his news report. [He is not
worried that there will be no report. Maybe he assumes doctors don't watch
his National Enquirer type news.] She is shocked he has this extremely
experimental drug, and he says that it is probably sugar water but that he
wants his show to be as realistic as possible. He is completely convincing
[at least to Eve and me]. Eve explains that this drug is just in the
beginning stages of testing and is only used on the terminally ill. She says
there is a 99.9% chance of death for anyone who is using it currently. Roger
says "oh". The camera closes in on his face as she continues to talk about
the seriousness of the disease and the drug. He thanks her, apologizes for
interrupting her lunch [which she does, in fact, eat alone!], and offers his
congratulations for her engagement. She offers her hand so he can admire the
engagement ring and he departs amiably. Roger returns to Holly. Holly wonders
what he learned and Roger explains. He thinks maybe his chain is being pulled.
Holly says that he could know, if he simply asked Alan. Roger laughs at the
simplicity of the idea, but decides to do it.

Matt walks in during the Thorpe/Lindsay conversation and goes up
to Bridget who is busy behind the counter. He says that things aren't working
for him, and he is "outta here".

Vanessa at home:

Vanessa is lying in bed [which is where she always seems to be these
days. A sure sign of depression, Vanessa] hearing Matt's voice echoing.
"Contessa wore this. Ms. Lewis wears these." Over and over again. Then his
voice says "Goodbye" and she snarls out a vicious "goodbye".

Buzz and Nadine:

Frank and Eleni join the newly married couple upstairs. Nadine decides
that the apartment really is too small ("maybe Buzz would like a second room"),
and Frank and Eleni say, okay it was just a suggestion. They will help look
for another place. Buzz flip-flops and decides that this is just where he
wants to be. Nadine jumps all over him, and Eleni drags Frank out of the room.
Nadine slobbers all over his face and says "things are different", etc.
(He agrees. They are so much older.) She kisses him, and in general is very
affectionate. Then she stops, and again, asks him if this is what he really
wants. He has says yes, "you shouldn't let the past rule you" and that
Nadine "rules the past". [If that doesn't make sense, it may be because I
didn't understand what in the world he was talking about. Sorry.]

Downstairs in the diner:

Stavros is giving Lester a birthday cake. Ross strides in the diner
closely followed by Nick. Nick is furious about Gilly's report, but not really
at Gilly. He respects her for her courage. But he wants to make sure Roger has
no power over his mother. He tells Ross that he knows Roger went to the Orient
in search of the people plaguing Spaulding, and he knows that he met a Mr.
Tashua who is at the heart of the rumors. Ross tells Nick that if he is
after revenge against Roger (and Holly), that he should forget it.

Roger and Holly:

Roger can't get to the phone. (A woman is having some silly conversation
very loudly on the only phone in Company.) Blake comes in and joins them. She
tells them that they need not worry about Alan, for sure she doesn't. Roger
is shocked, and Holly says that she told Blake (but makes it clear she didn't
tell Blake everything--particularly that Alan is out of prison).

Meanwhile, over at another table, Bridget sits Matt down and demands
to know why he's leaving. He tells her that though he can see how happy she
is here, this place is not for him. It's just not his style. Bridget just
doesn't believe him. She doesn't buy any of his lone ranger act. (Meanwhile
Eve's beeper goes off.) Bridget says that she thinks something else is going
on and he won't tell her. Maybe he is actually beginning to like the people
of Springfield and he can't handle it.

The phone rings and it's for Roger. Alan greets Roger and Roger
demands to see him. Alan gives Roger his address and tells him to come on
over.

Alan at his place:

Alan tells Susan "Roger's coming to pay a condolence call. I better
get ready."

Nick and Ross:

Nick is worried that Ross is protecting Blake. Ross gets irritated
by the young upstarts implication and puts him in his place--how he has
known, and hated, all these people longer than he or Alex have been around.
He thinks that a few good photo ops are all Alex really needs for the people
to forget Gilly's telecast; it's no big deal he says. Really, the people
expect it from Lady Alex; they would be disappointed without it. Nick agrees
but thinks that his mother really has changed for the better. He thinks all
she needs is a man [clearly, he needs to start reading RATS], and that she
is becoming more and more isolated. Ross says, "Maybe there is a lesson here
for you."

Buzz and Nadine clamor into the dining room. Buzz says maybe he should
carry Nadine over the threshold. Frank offers to lend a hand. They all yell
at him, and he says he meant the baggage. Wicked little smile. Buzz and Nadine
trundle on upstairs, and Frank and Eleni debate the wisdom of this marriage.
Frank thinks that his father's feelings for Jenna were unrealistic and
weren't based on understanding but on fantasy. As he talks, the scene cuts
to Buzz and Nadine romping around with Mexican looking hats upstairs. Eleni
agrees that maybe that is the case, but she wonders "what a man like Buzz is
without his dreams". We see Nadine leave and Buzz sit down on the couch, all
the smiles that were there a moment ago, erased, leaving nothing but a very
depressed man.

Matt and Bridget:

Matt tries to explain he needs to leave, but he doesn't want Bridget
mad at him. She says that she understands, but that it is rough after last
night and the hijacking frustration. He is shocked that the plan failed and
looks upset. Bridget is now more than ever convinced that he cares, and that
is why he is leaving. Matt goes upstairs to pack.

Blake complains that her parents are parenting. She wonders what they
will do when Alan gets out of prison. Holly is entirely happy with being an
overprotective mother. She says it's good for the "pariah/concubine of Roger
Thorpe". Blake spots someone suspicious and follows her out of Company
furtively.

Alan and Roger:

Alan welcomes Roger to his humble home. Roger is surprised by the trust
Alan is offering (no "blindfolds"). Alan says he is very serious about their
partnership and says that today is their big day. Either they will be "on the
same side or staring across a great chasm" at each other.

Vanessa:

She is still in bed. Rolling and tumbling across the sheets, she gazes
up and sees Matt's silhouette in the door frame. He walks in and tells her
he "can't just walk out unless you tell me to". She touches his face. "I want
you to kiss me. I want you," she whispers. They roll and tumble, and she
wakes/sits up fast. She reaches over and smells and fondles her Contessa
denim jacket. Then she slams it down and gets out of bed.

Bridget and Matt:

Matt tells Bridget that there is something, but he can't tell her what
it is. He says that he's glad he has "found her again" and he doesn't want to
lose her, but that he has to go. She cries and they hug. He says he will stay
in touch, and she says "get outta here". He leaves and Holly asks Bridget if
she knows where Blake is. Bridget, through tears, tells her Blake left a while
ago.

Blake:

Blake is following a woman into a small hallway of what is possibly
the basement of an old factory. She opens a door and is grabbed by a big
hairy arm. She bites it and spins around. It's Ross and she looks now we
notice a string quartet and a table with wine on it. Frank and Eleni are
standing off to the side sort of laughing. They say she has been set up to
teach her a lesson about following suspicious strangers into dark buildings.
She says she knew it was a set up all along. [heh heh]
She says she has learned her lesson and would they get off her case.
Eleni turns on the hostess attitude and sits Ross and Blake down and reveals
their dinner. Then she pushes Frank out the door.

Ross apologizes for the "dirty trick" but explains he was affected by
her "lack of meaning" in her life speech. He says he just wants to remind her
of the real meaning in both of their lives. Each other. They hold hands.

Alan and Roger:

"I want Chrissy safe", Roger insists. Alan agrees as long as Roger
gets her signature. Roger looks around and recognizes the clock. Alan explains
his link to Tashua (the deal is Tashua will bankroll Alan in return for
lucrative Spaulding contracts). Roger and Alan fight a little, but agree that
though they don't like each other, they hold one another in the highest regard
as businessmen. Alan says Roger is the only man who could can get to Alex,
and that he must do just that. His job is to get Alex's signature. Alan will
take care of Vanessa and Blake is optional.

Matt:

Matt slips into Vanessa's in-the-process-of-being-renovated room
through a window. She's not there. He goes through her drawers and finds a
pen and some paper. He begins to write a note to Contessa. "I don't want to
leave, but I have no choice." The headache he has been developing all day is
just killing him now, and he stops for a while. He grabs some aspirin (from
another of Vanessa's drawers) and crinkles up the note.

Buzz:

Buzz is going through his collection of Jenna clippings and storing
them away.

Blake and Ross:

Slow-mo. They are eating and gazing into each other's eyes. In the
background, the GL theme is being played by a piano, very very very slowly.
They dance and she pulls of his bow tie and the kiss, and so on.

Alan and Roger:

Roger is leaving and as he does, he asks why Alan doesn't just take
the money and go away. "Retiring to a Villa in the South of France would be
like retiring to a coffin", Alan explains. He has future plans. Roger looks
sort of sad and leaves. Susan remarks that Roger seems like he "would be
sorry to see Alan go". Alan, with a sparkle in his eye, says "Roger does not
yet know the meaning of sorrow. But he will."

Matt:

Matt isn't getting anywhere. He is now in agony. He lays down on
Vanessa's bed.

That's all I saw.
