               **********GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE************
                        for Monday, Oct. 3, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

** Roger checks out Alan's medical records
** Vanessa goes for volunteer of the year
** Holly lets Blake know what's up
** Fletch blows off Alexandra
** Gilly sets her plan in motion

JOURNAL:
Holly's office: Roger and Holly are having breakfast (bagels)
when Blake comes in to have Holly sign some vacation requests,
since Blake is filling in for Tangie while she is out sick.
After Blake leaves, Rog and Holly realize that Ross has not
informed Blake about being one of Alan's trustees, but that Ross
does not realize that Alan is free. They debate whether or not
to tell her, and speculate about what Alan is up to and what is
in the vial of medicine that Rog took from Alan's briefcase.

ALAN'S:
Alan is on the phone with the Dr. he hired to take care of A-M.
He asks if the Dr. did as he asked, and is pleased with the
response that he hears.

VANESSA'S BOUDOIR:
Bill wakes up Vanessa, who has overslept. Bill is concerned
because he noticed that Vanessa hasn't been sleeping at night.
She dismisses his concern, saying that she is just going through
a phase. She hurries Bill off to school, and goes to the closet
to get dressed. Of course, in walks Matt.

Roll Opening

COMPANY:
Gilly and David are eating breakfast. Gilly says she won't let
herself be a pawn between Spaulding and the Thorpes. She plans to
work for herself! Gilly expresses concern about David's P.I.
work, but he assures her that Frank does the dangerous work and
he's working with Dylan right now on a little "company business."
Gilly doesn't believe him, but before she can grill him further,
Roger's secretary from the station rushes in to tell Gilly that
the noon anchor is sick and there is no replacement for the
newscast. Gilly says she will do the newscast, and proceeds to
give the secretary all kinds of directions. David says that is
how Connie Chung got started. Gilly doesn't want an anchor
position, but it is something she can use to get herself out from
between the warring camps of the Spauldings and Thorpes. Gilly
assures David that she'll watch her back...

JOURNAL:
Holly's office: Holly can't see Alan getting Alex to sign over
her power (or Vanessa or Blake), but Roger says they didn't see
Alan getting released early, either. Outside the office,
Alexandra is looking for Fletcher, who blows her off. Roger
interrupts to ask Alex if Alan was being treated for drugs when
she saw him in prison. Alex says it's preposterous. Meanwhile,
Blake has shown up to overhear most of this, and remarks to Alex
that "if your intention is to grovel before Fletch, I'd suggest
kneepads." :). Holly and Alex then exchange barbs (seems Alex
blames Holly for all her problems with Fletcher). Alex talks
nasty until she sees Fletcher coming. She then switches to
apologizing to Holly for any inconvenience she may have caused
Holly and Roger over their arrests for breaking into her house.
Both Holly and Fletcher don't buy it, and Fletcher informs Alex
that it is over between them.

ALAN'S:
Alan tells Susan (they are both carrying fencing equipment) that
the Dr. they hired is a liability and that Alan is going to see
that he doesn't bring "tourists" like Blake Thorpe (Susan reminds
him it is Marler now) around anymore. This will be the Dr's last
task. Alan says Rog will take the bait and Alex, Vanessa and
Blake will soon follow.

VANESSA'S BEDROOM:
Vanessa says Matt surprised her. The sexual tension in the room
is rather intense. He informs her that the materials for her
bedroom renovation will be there that afternoon (only on a soap,
huh?). He tells her more details of the renovation, and she says
it would be foolish to continue with their affair. Matt notes
that his dad always told him he was a fool, but agrees with her.
Vanessa says she wants to be friends, however, she makes him
agree to never be in the bedroom at the same time she is. She
drops the clothes she had been holding and Matt helps her pick
them up. As he does this, he leans forward and kisses her
tenderly on the cheek.

LEWIS OIL: Mindy (who is chowing down on something-- it's nice
to see skinny women eating on a soap!), Henry, and Wanda wonder
where Vanessa is because it is not like her to be late for a
meeting. Vanessa transports in, and learns that almost
everyone else who should be there is later than her. Nick, then
Sid Dickerson come in. Wanda gives Sid a message that he should
watch the WSPR news at noon. Fletch and Eve come in, and Matt
shows up to have a form signed. Wanda, who is obviously
impressed by Matt's looks, tries to run interference.

WSPR:
Behind the scenes, David is there to encourage Gilly before the
broadcast. She tells David to wish her luck because if she goes
through with her "plan", she'll need a bodyguard to get out.

JOURNAL:
Roger has Eve (who is at Lewis Oil) paged. When Eve is annoyed
that Roger has bothered her for a non-emergency reason, he points
out that he is calling in the favor he did for her when he
testified on her behalf at her reinstatement hearing (hey, I
though he testified to repay her for saving his life when Billy
shot him... Oh well, the ploy works because Eve stays on the
line). He says they are doing a story on medications, and he
wants to know about a drug called Xyprothene (sp??). He says he
heard it was a treatment for a rare blood disease? Eve is
surprised he's heard of it, because it is a new drug and is used
as a last resort because the disease is almost always fatal.
When Roger hangs up, Holly asks about the phone call. Roger says
he needs more info, so he is going to the prison. Blake comes in
and Roger and Holly stop their conversation. Blake is
suspicious, and Roger transports out. Blake reads Holly the riot
act for treating her the same way that Roger and Ross treat her
(like she is a porcelain doll). She demands to know what is up.

LEWIS OIL:
Matt explains to Vanessa (while Wanda looks on) that a Lewis
Exec. needs to sign his form for a physical. Alex shows up and
wants to know if "the young man is any good" ;), because she has
some projects coming up. Vanessa is flustered, and tells Matt
not to mind Alex. He says he didn't mind, he thought she was
offering him a job... Vanessa enters the room where everyone is.
She says she's glad they're all there cecause they will need a
lot to get this thing rolling. Everyone is confused -- what
thing? Before Vanessa can continue, Sid interrupts to say that
Gilly's on the news and he wants to turn up the volume. We see
Gilly give an editorial detailing how taxpayer money was wasted
in Alex's recent false accusation of Roger and Holly. Holly and
Blake at the Journal, and the group gathered at Lewis Oil all
hear this. Nick immediately jumps on the phone as Gilly
concludes the broadcast.

ALAN'S:
Alan turns off the TV and calls information to get the phone
number for the newsroom at WSPR. He calls WSPR and finds out
Gilly's name.

LEWIS:
Nick transports out to deal with the stuff going on at WSPR. Alex
encourages Vanessa to continue. Vanessa is plugging a new
charity: She says she has had the opportunity to work with many
wonderful children in the past year (Right. In addition to
adopting an infant, running Lewis Oil, going through Billy's
legal problems, running off on a vacation by herself where she
gets stranded on a deserted island and has an affair with her
adopted son's biological uncle, Vanessa has been volunteer of the
year for her work with disadvantaged children. Boy, the writers
pulled this one out of their butts!). She says the children who
have been successful in their lives are ones who have had access
to all aspects of society. She wants everyone to band together
and form a service organization called FAMILY FRIENDS. She
thinks that everyone there has something they can offer to
disadvantaged young people. Sid can offer legal help, Eve
medical, Henry and Alex are the movers and shakers-- they have
connections and can show kids how to get things done, legally.
And, Mindums can show kids how to start up small businesses (HA!
I can just see it... Mindy: "Well, first you have to have a rich
Daddy who lets his princess do anything she wants..."). Fletch
says the Journal will feature the story. They agree to meet next
week. People start to leave. Eve notices Vanessa looks tired
and asks her if she's OK. She encourages a medical check-up,
which Henry tells her he'll make sure she keeps. Alex thanks
Vanessa for including her in the service organization. Vanessa
says of course, then transports out (gee, I guess she put in her
busy day at the office... :)). Fletch, who has been hanging
around, tells Alex he's sorry she had to see Gilly's broadcast.
As they talk, we see Vanessa's locket on the desk and that Alan
is listening in on the conversation.

VANESSA'S BEDROOM:
Matt is working on stapling plastic to a newly framed wall in
Vanessa's remarkably clean bedroom. Bill comes in on his lunch
break, sits in the new hot tub, and proceeds to give Matt the
third degree about why he's staying in Springfield. Conversation
turns to Michelle, and Bill says she's his girlfriend, but that
he thinks she is interested in older guys. Matt seems to catch
on and reasssures Bill that when you're older you can date older
people, but when you're Bill and Michelle's age, you should stick
to your own age. Bill: "So you wouldn't be interested in a girl
a lot younger than you?" Matt: "Older, maybe, but not younger."
:). Bill seems happy with this and leaves to go back to school.
Matt stares at a picture of Vanessa and then continues nailing up
plastic on the wall (Why does he need to put plastic on an inside
wall? _This Old House_ and other shows like that never do... I
guess the writers were just a little too lazy to check out the
details of construction and remodelling....).

PRISON DOCTOR'S OFFICE:
Roger, dressed as a repair man, goes through the file drawers and
finds Alan's file as the Dr. Alan hired to treat A-M catches him
(Aha! So this is how Alan knows him!)

LEWIS OIL:
Alex and Fletch continue their conversation. Alex tries
justifying her behavior of the past, and tells Fletcher that she
is handling all the new developments in her life well. Fletcher
is pleased to hear this, because it means she doesn't need him.
She says no, and proceeds to tell him how empty she feels now
that he's gone. Alan, who is eavesdropping, gets angry because
Alex is begging Fletch to come back: "Spauldings don't grovel!"
Fletcher asks Alex to give him time, and leaves. Alex says he
can have all the time he wants, because she'll be waiting.

WSPR, POST BROADCAST:
David spots Nick and asks Gilly if she wants him to run
interference for her with Nick. Gilly says no, because this is
the reaction she wanted. Nick is pissed at the slanted reporting
about the incident between Alex and Holly and Rog. Gilly shows
Nick a memo in which she claims Roger forced her to cover the
story. She says she had to do it because she is "just an
employee". Gilly says Roger is furious with her because of the
contract he found. Nick says that Rog can't fire Gilly without
his approval, so she'd better be careful who she sides with and
what she reports. Gilly reminds him that if he wants Roger gone,
he needs her. Nick wants to know what she wants. She says she
wants the station, and until then, she needs complete control to
run it in Nick's absence. Nick says maybe he should have fired
her when Roger wanted to. Gilly says it is too late. Sid
interrupts the conversation to warn Nick that there are laws
against giving Gilly a hard time for doing her job.

PRISON DOCTOR'S OFFICE:
Roger pretends to have fixed the phone. The Dr. is suspicious,
but Roger is able to leave and the Dr. takes a swig of bourbon.

JOURNAL:
Blake insists Holly tell her what's going on. Holly says she is
concerned that Blake will be one of the first people Alan comes
after when he's out of jail.

WSPR:
Nick tells Sid to butt out. Gilly says she and Nick can handle
it on their own. Nick says he'll need certain guarantees and
leaves. Sid congratulates her for being so shrewd.

VANESSA'S BEDROOM:
Matt hangs up some of Vanessa's clothing on a portable clothing
rack. He fondles some of it and comes across the jeans shirt
that Vanessa wore on the island. He flashes back to a scene of
them stranded on the island when Vanessa first wore the shirt.
Meanwhile, Vanessa transports in and is impressed with how much
he got done. He says he has a lot more to go, and calls her Mrs.
Lewis. She says not to call her that. He shows her the island
shirt and says that the "Contessa" wore clothes like that, but
"Mrs. Lewis" wears all the other clothes (mainly business attire)
that he hung up. Matt says it is not working, and that he is
going to leave town. Vanessa doesn't try to stop him.

JOURNAL:

Holly fills in Blake on being a trustee for Alan's assets. Blake
is ticked, but says she's not going to worry because she has
better things to do with her life (Ha! Right now, she has no
life!). The phone rings. It is Roger, and he tells Holly about
the medical file on Alan. The file says that Alan is dying (how
he could possibly have had time to read the file, I do not know.
The doctor caught him as soon as he found the file...). As Roger
tells Holly about his discovery, we see Alan and Susan vigorously
fencing and laughing...

That's it!
