GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1998

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Harley & Phillip discover that Annie has been in Springfield.
* Blake begs Ross to make love to her, but is disappointed.
* Beth has better luck with Ben, after he helps out with the cops.

MARLER BEDROOM: Ross returns from taking Holly home. Blake is subdued.
She gives Ross a tearful hug & cries that she missed him. She misses
being a wife to him. Ross says she's the best wife a man could have.
Blake asks him to make love to her. "Have you discussed this with your
doctor?" asks Ross. "He's not the one I want to make love to," deadpans
Blake. She says there's nothing physically wrong with her. Ross is
hesitant. Blake thinks he doesn't want her anymore.

POLICE STATION: Beth denies to Teri and Frank that she sent poison fruit
to Harley or dead flowers to Holly. Frank reads Beth's letter aloud. He
thinks it sounds very suspicious. Beth explains that the letter referred
to taking Lizzie out of town so Harley couldn't have lunch with her on
Daisy's birthday. Beth is sure that Harley is trying to take Lizzie away
from her. Teri asks Beth about her relationship with Holly. Apparently
Blake was upset about some articles the Journal ran about her
relationship with Ben Warren and about exposing Lizzie's involvement in
Carl's death. Beth says she was upset, but she & Holly came to an
understanding. Teri asks why Beth was harassing Harley earlier this
evening. Beth repeats that Harley is trying to take Lizzie away.

Ben Warren enters the room. Beth had called him earlier. Beth tells him
that the police aren't listening to her. She says whoever is behind the
gifts is still out there, since she didn't do it.

SPAULDING STUDY: Lizzie finds a card attached to the doll she received.
The card says the gift is from Annie. Lizzie is excited & says the doll
looks just like Annie. Alan says the doll's dress is just like Annie's
wedding dress. He reads the note, which says that Annie misses Lizzie.
Lizzie says she misses Annie too; she was fun. Alan agrees. Lizzie wants
to show the doll to her dad, but Alan stops her, saying it's not a good
time. He doesn't think Phillip would want Lizzie to accept such an
expensive gift, so it's better if he doesn't know where it came from.
Lizzie loves the doll & doesn't want to give it back. Alan says she can
keep it, but makes Lizzie promise to keep where it came from a secret.

SPAULDING LIVING ROOM: Phillip & Harley discuss what may happen to Beth.
Phillip is worried about how Lizzie will react if Beth is arrested. He
doesn't think it's suitable for Lizzie to stay with them at Harley's
place. Harley suggests a sleepover at Marina's. Lizzie comes running in
with cookies and Phillip asks her about the sleepover. Lizzie is
thrilled at the prospect. She asks if she can bring her "new Annie
doll." Oops. She turns to Alan and apologizes. "I forgot." Phillip asks
what she forgot. Lizzie says she wasn't supposed to tell & asks if she
has to send it back now. She explains that Annie sent her a new doll.

Harley sounds concerned & asks to see the doll. Lizzie takes Harley to
see the doll. Phillip angrily asks Alan what's going on. Alan says it's
just a toy. Phillip is not so sure. Alan thinks Phillip is being
ridiculous. Phillip thinks the gift from Annie is connected to the
"gifts" that Harley & Holly got. He doesn't like the idea of Lizzie
getting a gift from an escaped psycho. Alan says Annie made a few
mistakes, but Phillip likens her to Ted Bundy & calls her a sociopath &
a wacko. Alan says Annie would never hurt Lizzie.

Harley & Lizzie return with the doll. She tells Phillip to look at the
tag on the foot. It says the doll is an original, handmade in
Springfield. Lizzie lights up, thinking this means Annie has come home.
Phillip & Harley are less delighted by the prospect.

POLICE STATION: Ben says he's taking Beth home unless they have grounds
to hold her. Teri says Beth is not under arrest. Ben accuses the cops of
intimidating Beth. Frank says they're just trying to find out the truth.
It's very convenient that Beth was out of town when Harley was poisoned,
and can't account for her whereabouts when Holly received the dead
flowers. Frank shows Ben the letter from Beth. Ben says it's
circumstantial at best. Frank says they also found a book of nursery
rhymes at Beth's home. Ben finds this laughable. He & Beth are ready to
go. Frank thinks that Beth would want to make sure they believe she's
innocent before she leaves. Ben threatens a civil suit if the police
don't stop harassing Beth.

MARLER BUDOIR: Ross assures Blake that he does want her. Blake begs him
to "be with" her. Ross says that Blake can't feel anything. "I feel
love," says Blake. Her heart feels incredible love & if her body could
feel what her heart feels, she's sure she could walk again. Ross is sure
Blake will get better. Blake says love is the most powerful weapon she
has to get her feeling back. She begs Ross to make love to her.

Ross puts his arm around Blake & says the trauma she suffered could take
months or years to overcome. He doesn't want her to get the idea that
making love will heal her. Blake says there's no physical reason she
can't get out of her wheelchair. Ross says there's plenty of time. Blake
doesn't want to wait. She wants to walk & run & play with her kids. She
wants to be a wife to Ross in every sense of the word. Ross says they
just have to let nature take its course & wait. Blake cries that he has
no idea how much she needs him right now. Ross finally relents & kisses
Blake. He says she doesn't have to do this for him. Blake pulls him
closer & kisses him desperately. She tells him she'll be right back &
wheels out of the room.

POLICE STATION: Ben says they should arrest Beth or let her go. Frank
says she's free to go. Teri asks her to notify them if she plans to
leave town again, in case they have any more questions for her. Beth
says they can contact her attorney, and leaves with Ben.

Teri thinks it's definitely possible that Beth poisoned Harley, but she
doesn't see a strong connection to Holly. She says both crimes were
committed against women who gave up or lost a child. She worries that
the pranks will intensify and other women will be hurt. Frank says they
will give the case priority & try to figure out who other potential
victims are.

SPAULDING LIVING ROOM: Lizzie wants her doll back, but Phillip & Harley
don't want her to touch it yet. Harley gives the doll the once over
while Phillip sends Lizzie upstairs to pack an overnight bag. Harley
says the doll seems OK & it didn't come with a nursery rhyme. The box is
postmarked Springfield. Phillip says the spooky gifts have Annie written
all over them. It's not Beth's style. Harley examines the doll again,
looking for a signature. She finds the initials M.B., which she says are
for Mrs. Beasley, a local artist who makes dolls and never leaves her
house on Valley Road. Harley takes the doll & says she's going to talk
to Mrs. Beasley. She wants to go alone, because Mrs. Beasley is
uncomfortable with men. She asks Phillip to call Frank & tell him
there's another possible suspect in the case. Phillip warns Harley to be
careful, because if Annie's back, she wants revenge. Harley tells
Phillip to watch out for Lizzie.

BEN'S PLACE: Beth thanks Ben for helping her. Ben says if Teri bothers
Beth again, he'll take care of it. Beth says Ben is very special. Ben
offers her some wine. She accepts & says she feels safe with Ben. She
notices he's been very quiet & asks what's bothering him. Ben hesitates,
then says he's a passionate person, but not an emotional one. It's all
about Blake. Ben says it doesn't matter, but Beth says it does. After
all Blake put him through, he still feels something for her. "Can Blake
say the same thing?" she asks.

MARLER HOUSE OF PASSION: Blake returns in a white negligee as Ross
lights some candles. Ross says Blake is the perfect wife & mother. Blake
says he's seeing something that's not there. Ross says she taught him
the power of love. Their love is a miracle that sustains him every day
of his life. Maybe it can heal. Blake says she can be the woman she once
was. Ross says he believes in miracles & he believes in Blake. They kiss
tenderly.

BEN'S PLACE: Beth pours more wine for Ben & they toast each other as
they relax on the couch. Ben says misery loves company, but Beth says
she's not miserable. She says Ben is the only person who accepts her
unconditionally & she can always count on. Ben could say the same about
her. Beth thinks Ben is wonderful & remarkable. Ben says not everyone
sees him that way. Beth says they aren't looking close enough. She knows
him & likes him. Ben asks what would have happened if they had met years
ago when they were still young & impressionable. Beth doesn't want to
look back. She lives in the here & now. She asks if Ben remembers when
she told him about her fantasies. He made her feel hopeful & human &
connected. Ben says he got something out of it too. Beth says tonight
it's her turn to make Ben's fantasies come true.

SPAULDING HOUSE: Phillip lets Teri in. Alan isn't happy to see her &
asks where Beth is. Teri says they questioned her & let her go. She left
with Ben Warren. Teri asks about Phillip's new suspect. Alan says Annie
would never come back to Springfield. Phillip tells Teri about the doll
that Annie sent. Teri wants to see it, but Phillip explains that Harley
took it & went to see the woman who made it. Teri is concerned that
Harley went alone. She goes for the phone & says if Annie sent a package
that could be traced, then Harley is walking into a trap. Phillip is mad
at himself for letting her go alone. He rushes out as Teri yells at him
to stop.

VALLEY ROAD: Harley knocks on Mrs. Beasley's door, calling out that
she's Nadine's daughter. Mrs. Beasley opens the door & regards Harley
suspiciously, but remembers the doll she made for her. She reluctantly
lets Harley in. Harley shows her the bridal doll & asks if Mrs. Beasley
knows who bought it. Mrs. Beasley says it was a special order. Harley
says the doll came without a note & they're trying to figure out who
sent it. She shows Mrs. Beasley a picture of Annie, but Mrs. B says the
woman who came in had long, dark hair & thick glasses. Harley grabs a
marker & draws glasses & dark hair on Annie's photo, then shows it to
Mrs. B again. "Could that be the woman who bought the doll?"

BEN'S: Beth massages Ben's shoulders & bets she can guess what he's
thinking. She unbuttons his shirt as she says he thinks Beth is feeling
hurt & needy & abandoned because Phillip didn't lift a finger when she
was dragged down to the police station. Ben wasn't thinking that at all.
Beth says that's good, because Phillip is the furthest thing from her
mind. She suggests Ben try it. He turns to face her & she starts
unbuttoning her dress. She asks if he wants her to stop, but he says no,
so she pulls off the dress and asks if he's afraid of her, Snow White's
evil stepmother, purveyor of poison apples. Ben likes dangerous women &
offers to be her dwarf. Beth kisses him & asks if he's Dopey or Happy.
Ben grins widely & says he's Lucky. They kiss some more.

MARLER BED: Still fully clothed, Ross lies in bed beside Blake & says
she makes him happy. He sees her tears & asks what's wrong. Blake says
she loves him & wanted this to be perfect. But when she moves toward
him, her legs don't go. She is sorry. Ross says there's nothing to
apologize for. Blake blames herself for what has happened to her. Ross
says it was all a horrible accident. "You have no idea how much I wish
that was true," cries Blake.

Ross asks why Blake keeps insisting that it's her fault. Blake says she
should never have let Ben in the house. Ross says she couldn't have
known what he was going to do. Blake says she did this to herself &
she's going to fix it. She wants Ross to help her. She wants to prove to
everyone that she can walk. She tries to move her legs, but nothing
happens & she cries. Ross says he loves her & all he needs is to hold
her in his arms. Not all miracles happen all of a sudden & there's no
need to rush it. Blake wants to be Ross's wife tonight. Ross says she
will always be his wife. Blake cries that she can't feel anything. She
hears Ben's voice in her head, telling her that the reason she can't
feel is because she's afraid to feel and lose control. She cries harder.

BEN'S: Post-boink, Beth & Ben laze in his bed. Somehow, she is now
wearing his shirt. They compliment each other on their boinking prowess
& stamina. Ben thanks Beth & says it was exactly what he needed. "Me
too," says Beth. She feels a little like Snow White after the prince
kissed her. She woke up, looked around & knew exactly where she was. A
great place. Ben likes happy endings & he likes Beth. He starts to say
that he hasn't thought about Blake, but Beth hushes him. He says he
might need some distraction. Beth thinks that could be arranged, as she
leans over him & starts kissing.

MRS. BEASLEY'S: Harley thanks Mrs. B for her time. Mrs. B says whoever
bought the doll really loved Lizzie. She said Lizzie was supposed to be
in her wedding, but it got cancelled at the last minute. "Oh my god,"
says Harley. She asks if the woman said anything else to Mrs. B. "Only
that she was happy to be back in Springfield," answers Mrs. B.

Phillip starts banging on the door & yelling for Harley, making Mrs. B
very nervous. Harley lets herself out & tells Phillip it was definitely
Annie. Teri rushes up in time to hear that Annie's back, and the screen
fades to black.
