                        GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE
                     Tuesday, September 10, 1996

A four hanky episode, written by Roger Newman and directed by Brian Mertes.

Cedars Hospital: Griff the Stiff is on the phone to the DA's office trying
to get the charges against Vivian dropped when she appears at his door.

Vanessa's Memorial: Bill assures Dina everything will go all right at the
service. Enter Frank and Buzz, Lillian, Rick and Abby, Hart, Josh and
Billy to pay their respects. Josh agrees to look after little Billy for
big Billy. Bridget exits with Billy to catch him up on all Peter's news.
Enter Marcus and Dahlia. Finally, enter Matt, alone, as everyone turns to
stare at him.

Midland Hills: Roger awakens and seems to have forgotten where he is and
why he is there. During his conversation with Dr. Dobson he asks for Dina.

Memorial: Enter Zachary in the rear. Dina and Bill approach the front to
begin the service, a celebration of Vanessa's life. Dina speaks about her
mother's love of flowers and announces that cuttings from Vanessa's garden
will be distributed to everyone at the end of the service.
Bill recites a poem, "The Passionate Shepherd," by Christopher Marlow.
Although Bill begins, the voice over changes to Matt somewhere in the
middle. He doesn't actually speak out loud at the service, but his voice
is the one the audience hears. Cut to

Switzerland: Vanessa in Lucerne, is changing from the habit she wore on
the plane, preparing for a medical examination and glancing at her photo of
Matt.

Cedars: Despite the protestations of Griff's body guard, Viv enters the
room, proclaiming her innocence. He assures her that he knows she didn't
shoot him, and she immediately concludes that he knows who did. When she
presses him for a name, he remains mum.

Memorial: The cast sings Vanessa's favorite hymn, Amazing Grace, as Abby
signs the words. The camera pans the crowd, especially Matt, and then cuts
to

Switzerland: Vanessa is being examined by a doctor. As the song ends, she
looks sad.

Midland Hills: Roger asks again for Dina. The doctor informs him she
can't come today because her mother was killed in a car accident. Roger
becomes agitated in his efforts to get to Dina and help her.

Cedars: Fletcher (who seems to have forgotten that he was once engaged to
Vanessa and has remained a good friend throughout the years) is quizzing
Griff's remaining body guard about the whereabouts of Rashid, body guard
#2. When he enters Griff's room, Griff explains that Rashid went back to
Jamaica because his mother got sick. Fletch's brain is only operating at
16rpms, but even at this speed, something doesn't seem quite right.

Midland Hills: Dr. Dobson informs Roger he can't leave the hospital. When
she explains about his treatment (and the reasons for his memory loss),
Roger says the last thing he remembers is going to bed at the farm with
Dina when the tulips were in bloom.

Memorial Service: Billy speaks, telling everyone that Vanessa was too good
for him and that the years he spent with her were the best of his life. He
shares her last letter to him, filled with anecdotes about Dina, Bill, and
Peter.
Next Nola speaks as J looks on. She apologizes that no one can get in
touch with Quint and says that even though she and Vanessa didn't always
like each other that she grew to love her. Then she vows to reveal a
secret about Vanessa. From the back of the room, Zachary reacts in fear
and prepares to stop Nola, if necessary. After the commercial break, Nola
brings out Vanessa's hoola hoop and demonstrates it for the group.
Bridget says Vanessa taught her about grace, kindness, respect and being a
lady. She shows a picture Peter drew for her, and recounts Peter's
response upon being told that Vanessa is with God: "That's OK, I know she
still loves me."
Josh tells the crowd that Vanessa was more than a sister-in-law to him; she
was a friend. She cared for his family, his children and him. Annie jumps
in, speaking kindly as well, and replaying the last message Vanessa left on
their answering machine. Cut to

Switzerland: Vanessa's with her doctor as Vanessa's voice over talks about
making wishes.

Midland Hills: Roger learns he is at Midland Hills because he thought he
killed Hart. He reiterates that he needs to see Dina. Dr. Dobson is glad
his paranoia has disappeared. Roger assures her he feels calm and
peaceful. (Editorial Note: I sure hope this is just an act. Pod Roger is
pitiful to watch.)

Memorial Service: Ross speaks, saying he talked to Ed in Africa and that
he speaks for him, too. He has known Vanessa the longest--for thirty
years--since he fell in love with her and Dina was born. He vows to keep
Vanessa alive for her children by reminding them how wonderful she was and
how much she loved Henry. He then quotes Ed (quoting Bert), "There is a
destiny that makes us all brothers and none goes his way alone. All that
we send into the lives of others comes back into our own." (Can we get any
more mileage out of this quote?) He adds we should put a light in the
window until we meet again. He asks Blake to add to what he has said, but
she declines.
Bill approaches the front of the room to offer his last tribute--a home
video that he made a few months ago. On tape Matt and Vanessa play
badminton and argue about whether one or the other is cheating. Most of
the audience smile or laugh; Matt is close to tears.

Cedars: Fletch perseverates on learning who shot Griff. Finally he
concludes that Griff is his own worst enemy, and that the only person to
benefit from Griff's shooting is Griff himself.

Midland Hills: Roger's in the rec room at the piano, singing and playing
"What'll I do?"
He sings, "When I'm alone and old with only dreams of you, what'll I do?"
As his piano accompaniment continues.cut to.

Memorial service: Bill's home video continues. Now Matt is trying to
sunbathe and Vanessa's bothering him by tickling his nose with a flower.
Cut to

Switzerland: Vanessa gazes sadly at her photos of Matt. Enter her doctor,
who tells her how lucky she is that he runs a research facility where he is
pioneering an experimental treatment that may help her virus. He cautions
that the side effects are not well documented and he has been successful in
only a few cases, but, yes, one day she may be able to go home to her
family. Cut to freeze frame of Vanessa, smiling cautiously.
