[Reviewer comment: It sure is a bummer that part of
our group is seeing this show a day late. My hubby
suggests that perhaps we should identify shows by
first line or some other characteristic instead of
day as we have done in the past. Let me know what
you think about that idea]

LET THE SHOW BEGIN

Meals on Wheels Diner:
Nadine (pouring multiple glasses of ouzo) declares
that Nell and Frank are going to be the best cops in
town. Rick agrees that two more slime balls are off
the street as Nadine distributes libations to Eleni,
Frank and Nell. A toast is proposed to the new heroes
of 5th street. Nell and Rick chat and she wonders
what happened to the nurse. When Rick says they're
just good friends Nell is dubious. Buzz returns from
Goshen Iowa (did anyone notice Iowa on the map a few
days ago ?) to find Nadine livid about his trip. (He
must be on Cooper Beater Time to do it in one day!)
Deenie, holding an icebag to her head, asks
where he's been and answers her own question. When
Buzz tries to find out what's up, Nadine demands that
he first tell her what it is about that "blonde woman"
that makes him go back again and again. Buzz wonders
when she is going to let him lead his own life.

A Little Cottage in Goshen:
Revecca wants to know if Bud was her husband. When
Alan wonders why she thinks that, she says : "...
cause the love I see in his face, I can hear him
saying the wedding vows ..." Alan reminds her that he
said those words to her, but R. knows it is Bud who
is saying the words. She implores Mr. S. to tell her
the truth now. Alan asks, "What does the name Josh
Lewis mean to you?"

Cut to Carousel:
Josh slowly and quietly approaches Annie. They both
declare that they didn't expect to meet there. Josh,
saying that Annie was there first, turns to leave.
Annie says if he can leave like that she must not
have meant much to him. She wonders if there is not
enough love in his heart to hear her out, to hear the
whole story.

TWIRL LIGHTHOUSE

Diner:
Nell and Rick are at the jukebox. He hopes Nell isn't
planning to be a detective since she was so wrong
about his "friend." They exchange intros and decide to
go outside with some brewskis. Nell thinks Doc needs
to be "quick on the draw." Nadine fills Buzz in on the
robbery with a heavy emphasis on the fact that he
wasn't there. Back in the kitchen, N. tells about
Frank and Nell, and Rick's help with her head injury.
She zeroes in again on topic # 1: where he was. She
follows him into the diner proper, declaring that Buzz
has not changed and is still the "same fly-by-night,
never-there-when-you-need-him husband that she
married." Frankie tries to tell his Mom that she is
out of line. [Maybe that head injury was worse than
it looked, since Deenie acts very odd throughout the
entire show. Foreshadowing of her departure,
perhaps?]

Reveccabend:
R. says that she knows that the face she sees is
Bud's. Alan tells her that Bud and Josh Lewis are one
and the same [Alan sort of says Joshlewis like some
people say Alanspaulding]. Revecca is confused as she
thinks she was married to Alan. She asks
incredulously, "I was married more than once?" [This
girl really has lost her marbles]. Alan tells her that
is so, but their union was the great passion of her
life. He declares, "I don't know what you call what
you had with 'Bud.'" R. protests that his face at the
wedding is full of love and joy; we see a flashback of
this in black & white. Alan insists that Josh made her
life miserable. When her memory returns, it will all
come back. Revecca protests that she doesn't
understand since the love she sees seems real and
powerful. Alan insists she isn't seeing the whole
picture, only bits and pieces. He tells her that it
isn't real, her mind is playing tricks on her. She
demands that Alan tell her what is real.
Alan: "Joshlewis was a man controlled by his pride--
very self-righteous, judgmental. He only saw things as
black & white. There was no gray area for him."
Revecca: "Perhaps he simply knows right from wrong,
unlike you."
Alan: "He had this high-blown image of the kind of
woman he felt he deserved and I'm sorry to say you
didn't cut it. He couldn't accept you for who you
really are."
Revecca: "How bad was Reva Shane?"
Alan: "When she was good she was very good -- but
when she was bad -- well, that's what made Reva Reva.
... He couldn't accept the part that was less angelic.
It was his fatal flaw." [For a minute, I thought
Alanspaulding was going to say " and when she was
bad she was horrid."]

Cut to the Man in Question : Joshlewis:
Josh declares he doesn't need anymore gory details;
everytime she opens her mouth [which is often, tee
hee] he feels smacked in the face. She has destroyed
"what we had." Annie retorts : "what we had ... what we
had was love ... stronger than anything I've ever felt
in my whole life." The prig claims she made a joke of
it. Annie tells him she always felt a great pull
everytime she saw him, wanted to be with him all the
time and still does. Annie wants to tell him why she
didn't tell him that she and Rick were married and why
they broke up. Josh professes indifference but Annie
finally manages to tell him she did so because she is
a recovering alcoholic. For once, Josh is speechless.

After an ad in which ants tell us there is a smile in
every Hershey bar, we go back to Annie trying to
explain her disease. She says, "You add a daily dose
of bourbon to Annie Dutton and you get Annie Queen
of Hell." When Josh protests that he has seen Annie
drink before, she says alkies like to tempt fate--
like to think they can take a drink for special
occasions until any excuse will do. Annie tells him it
is an ongoing battle. Josh says it is hard for him to
see her like that. She tells him she was a rip-roaring
drunk by the time Rick left her. Josh thinks Annie
should have trusted him, but she didn't even trust
herself. She didn't know how to tell him and was
afraid he would leave and all the loneliness would
come back. Josh wonders why she and Rick didn't patch
things up after she stopped drinking. She says it is
because of the things she did when she was drinking ;
"there's more Josh and it's worse."

Cooper Diner:
Frank tells Nadine to give Buzz some slack. Deenie
declares that she had warned Buzz something bad was
going to happen, it just wasn't clear. Eleni tries to
get everyone past the awful evening. Buzz implores
someone to tell him what really happened.
Nadine: "I already told you."
Buzz: "In English."
Eleni: "That was English."
Frank: "Two guys on crack came in waving guns and
Nell and I took them down. End of story."
Nadine declares the guys wouldn't have bothered them
if Buzz had been there. Eleni points out that it was
his night off. Nadine tells them to stop making
excuses since Buzz is going through a midlife crisis
and needs a keeper. Buzz wonders if Deenie knows
what the word divorce means.

Deep in the Heart of Goshen:
Revecca tells Alan to "wait just one _damn_ minute.
Alan can't believe that Rebecca used the word "damn."
Revecca declares that Buzz told her everything she
needs to know about Alanspaulding. Alan declares Buzz
is a foaming at the mouth, champing at the bit person
who is trying to pump himself up at Alan's expense.
Revecca tells him Buzz said Alan was manipulator who
would do anything to get what he wants. Alan wants
to know what it is that he wants, but Revecca turns
away when he asks if she thinks he wants her. She
poohhoos this and says she can't believe anything he
says. He taunts her because she is losing it. She
counters that her heart tells her that she and Bud
had a wonderful life. When she starts asking him about
his son and Buzz's daughter, Alan retorts that she
was no saint. He says, "If I am the Devil himself, you
deserve a hot spot right next to me in the flames."
Reva declares that she wants to know everything.

HALFTIME

Back at the Diner in S'field:
When Nadine wants to know why it was so wrong to ask
where Buzz was, Frankie tells her no more third
degrees. Buzz shuts him up for his trouble, and F. and
Eleni throw up their hands. Buzz and Nadine sit in a
booth. He tells her he feels like he is in a time warp
and they just got married. Although they have had two
great runs, and there is no one he would have rather
been married to twice, it's over. At first Deenie
wants to know why they got divorced, but finally
admits she is glad it is over. When Buzz wants to
know what the trouble is then, she says she knows him
too well, how he "rushes into trouble where fools
rush in and angels shouldn't be behaving at all."
Instead of rushing her to the nearest emergency
room, Buzz just says she has lost him on that one.
Eleni drags Nadine off for iced tea, saying it is hot,
late and has been a hard night for all of them.
Deenie continues her diatribe about men who need
direction in day to day things -- wackorama -- like
junior high kids with credit cards. Eleni drags her
into the kitchen as Frankie hides behind a menu.

The Cop and the Doc on the Stoop:
Rick and Nell sit on a stoop near a real phone booth.
Rick wants to know the truth : wasn't she scared when
they dropped those guys. Nell says she was scared
they would get away and make Frank and her look
like jerks. She confesses that her biggest fear is to
look like a loser. When Rick opines that there are
worse things in life, Nell says not in her family.
Clearys are tough strong winners. They are not afraid
of anything, not in the Bridgeport section of
Chicago. Rick knows that was Mayor Daley's
old neighborhood [and so do I since I lived in
Chicago for several years, and in Illinois for many
more -- some in Jacksonville which is close to
Springfield]. Nell tells Rick that her whole family have
always been cops since the first one came over from
Ireland. Her Dad always talks about over a century of
Cleary boys in blue. She tells the story of her
great-grandfather who was in the New York Irish
Division in the Civil War. He lived to 103 and told war
stories to the end ; apparently he won the Battle of
Gettysburg. Nell notices that she is doing all the
talking and tries to coax Rick to tell what's on his
mind. Rick comes down to Nell's step and asks if she
has ever cared for someone a lot who let her down.
She protests that this is a big left-turn in their
convo. Rick thinks that since they don't know each
other it makes no difference. He persists asking if
she has ever been hit right between the eyes. Nell
confesses that she has and it nearly totaled her.
When Rick wonders if she's gotten over it, she
responds that you can get over anything. They both
seem lost in their own memories.

Truth on the Carousel:
Annie says that when Josh hears the worst he may
have even more reason for walking out of her life.
Josh says he doesn't appreciate her sarcasm, and
Annie says it is another thing she does when she is
scared. Annie starts the standard AA lecture on what
makes her tick, but Josh points out he has a brother
who is a drunk and knows more than he ever wanted to
know about drinking. Annie looks amazed at this news
flash [and I had forgotten about Billy too]. She says
that Rick never liked her drinking. He went to Alanon
meetings and refused to enable her anymore. It wasn't
any fun. Josh says that it usually is not any fun for
the person watching. Annie says that she had a
drinking problem but thought she had a husband
problem. Rick wasn't fun anymore; he was picking on
her for drinking. It got to the point that she hated
to go home at night. She went to a little bar by the
hospital in Chicago (the ER cafe) and had drinking
buddies. It was the perfect place for an alcoholic
nurse. Josh has that pinched self-righteous look that
we know so well.
She tells him that she drank a lot with her friend
Jake who met her shot for shot. Their only drinking
prob was being without a bottle after the liquor
store closed. After 8-10 drinks he looked like Kevin
Costner and she must have looked like Sharon Stone.
They ended up at hot sheet motels convinced that
they had found true love.
Josh wonders if Rick found out. She says he did, and
threw her out. She lived with Jake for 4 boozy
bourbon on the rocks months and didn't know the
difference between day and night. Josh says it is a
little hard to picture her like that.
One Saturday night Jake and she started out at a
dive, the Port o'Call, which served regulars after
hours. Afterwards Jake drove while she passed out in
the front seat. The next thing she knew Jake slammed
on the brakes and initially she saw a deer in the
headlights which turned out to be a man changing his
tire. He was looking right at her when they hit him.
She will never forget the look on his face--fear,
surprise. Jake hit him with his right front fender, and
he never stood a chance.

Cut to a candle on the table between Revecca and
Alan:
Alan tells R. that she lived on the edge like he did
and from the day they were born they've been greedy
for everything they could get out of life. He tells
her for starters that she worked through an entire
family; not just Josh. He was not snagged until she
had his brother and father. Revecca is rocked by the
father, but Alan assures her that it didn't seem to
bother her at the time because he had oil barrels
filled with cash. Revecca questions that she did
things for money. Alan tells her that money is the
reason that she was brought to S'field, to break up
Billy and his new love. Revecca says he makes it seem
that she only did things to satisfy her own selfish
needs. Reversing directions, Alan declares that she
was very generous and giving, that there wasn't a
mean spirited bone in her body.
Revecca wonders why Josh dumped her. Alan claims he
did so because he couldn't handle her--she was too
wild and free-spirited. He needed a woman he could
control. Reva turns her back and Alan wonders if she
is remembering the red dress. He tells her the story
again of how Joshlewis called her a slut in front of
the entire town. He broke her heart, so when she
drove off the bridge...
Suddenly Alan has connected the red dress incident
with the post-partum depression and tells her she
was on the bridge driving like a mad woman running
away from Joshlewis who had broken her heart. Reva
looks at Alan opened mouthed as the candle burns
down.
After a commercial we return as Alan relights the
candle. Revecca wonders if Bud is waiting for her to
come back. Alan says "Hardly. Josh along with everyone
else in S'field have gotten on with their lives." When
Revecca wonders what that means, Alan claims that in
the five years since her untimely death, Josh has
been involved with at least four women and is
presently engaged to a blonde nurse. With fake
sympathy Alan says that even though this hurts her a
lot he thinks she needs to hear it. Josh didn't waste
any time forgetting her if he cared about her in the
first place. Revecca is quietly crying and asks Alan
if he will swear that everything he said is true. Alan
suddenly states that everything Buzz Cooper said was
true; he is a liar.

Cut to Annie and Joshlewis:
Annie continues her sad story, telling Josh that the
man was bleeding from his femoral artery and although
she had handled stuff like that in the hospital a
thousand times, that night she couldn't move. Jake was
passed out by the side of the road in a pool of
vomit. The man died, and Annie watched him die. The
man had two children who were 6 and 10 then, and are
8 and 12 now. [So we know this was 2 years ago]. She
can't imagine how much they hate her; all she knows is
that she hates herself.
Josh looks at her like she's a bug under a
microscope, and asks what happened to Jake. She tells
him he stood trial for vehicular manslaughter and
might get out soon. When Josh wants to know what
happened to her, she says there is no law against
being a drunk passenger but she was just as
responsible. Josh nods his head [in agreement?] and
wonders if she still loves Jake. With a bitter laugh,
Nurse Dutton says once she was sober more than 24
hours she realized that he was just a person who
kept her drinking. Annie declares that that is it,
there are no more secrets.

The Stoop:
Rick wonders what made the daughter of a Chi police
officer leave the Windy City and become a cop. Nell,
in her trademark defensive mode, asks who's the
detective here, you or me. She is saved by the bell
at Frank's approach. Rick says that he has been
boring Nell with his life story. He leaves to go back
to the diner to say night to everybody.
Nell tries to follow, but Frank wants to clear up
something. Nell says she already knows how Frank
feels about her and she is too tired for another
lecture. Frank says if she would keep her trap shut
for 5 seconds, maybe he could get out what he wants
to say and that is that he is sorry. When he first
met her all he could see was attitude. Nell wonders
what the punch line is, and Frank starts to blow up
again. Nell says when she first met him she thought
he was an all talk big shot private dick who had done
it all and seen it all. Now she still thinks he talks
way too much and has no business analyzing anybody
but he's ok. Frank thinks that coming from her that's
a lot, and Nell says it is as good as it gets. They
both decide to go get some beer.

Cooper Diner:
Nadine, with her ice pack to her head, tells Eleni
that if Frank and Nell had not been there they could
have lost money or maybe even their lives. Maybe
Frank has found a good partner after all. Eleni says
maybe she can tell him that but Frankie can't stand
her attitude. We hear a banging noise as Nell and
Frank burst through the doors using their fingers as
guns yelling freeze. Poor Rick who is sitting on a
stool at the counter does a Dick VanDyke like
pratfall. He gathers himself up as all chortle.

Goshenbend:
Alan says that Buzz Cooper was right: he did cheat,
lie and manipulate people no matter what age, race or
creed. Revecca can't believe he is admitting all this.
Alan says that he knows Reva and he wants her to
know him. He has made a lot of mistakes and told a
lot of lies, but he hasn't lied about Joshlewis and
their relationship. They were totally wrong for each
other, he didn't understand her, he hurt her, yadda
yadda yadda. Josh was her polar opposite but he,
Alan, is like her.

When Revecca protests that they are not alike,
he answers that although they come from different
backgrounds they are alike in that they have
in that they have given into their appetites.
They see the world as a banquet table and have eaten
their fill. Revecca tells him it is late and they
both need their sleep. She rises and goes into her room.

The Carousel:
Annie, speaking to Josh's back, tells him not to blame
Rick. Josh turns and tells her that both of them kept
it a secret, and they are both guilty. Annie wonders
if that is all he has to say. Josh tells her that he
told her all about his life and held nothing back. He
told her the whole truth and she took it all and
never once told him that she was married to, in love
with a friend of his. Annie feels that it made it
harder. Josh claims he gave her chance after chance
to tell him. She tells him she was full of guilt and
self-loathing and couldn't believe he would still love
her after he knew what a terrible person she was.
Josh responds that she had no right to make that
decision.
Annie launches into her "I made a horrible mistake"
speech which is similar to those she has given Rick
so often. She says she is still the same woman he
fell in love with and recalls the life they planned
sitting on these horses when the only thing that
mattered was their dreams. She appeals to him that it
can still happen, they can work past this, and reach
for that brass ring.

Cooper Asylum:
Rick exits saying good-bye to Nell. When Nadine thanks
him for all he did and tells him everything is on the
house for the next month, he replies, " I won't be
coming here for a very long time.." [LOL]
Nell also takes her leave and mentions the traffic
test they have to take tomorrow. When they both
confess they have not studied, they remember that
red means stop, green means go and yellow hurry up--
what more do they need to know. Frank tells Eleni he
thinks Nell is going to be a decent cop. Nadine,
clutching her icebag, wonders where Buzz is. When she
wonders if he took off again, Frank and Eleni
chorus "It's none of your business."

Crazy Carousel:
Annie tells Josh she loves him more than anyone else
in the whole world. Josh says he isn't sure that
he believes this anymore because love has to be
based on trust and Annie didn't trust him enough to
tell him the most important facts in her life; how can
they build up that trust and have a life together.
Annie takes off her engagement ring and gives it to
Josh. She leaves as our tortured hero looks to the
heavens.

Hot Night in Goshen:
Alan is bedded down with an unlit candle in the
foreground. He looks at the wall and sees a
silhouette of Revecca preparing for bed. He smirks to
himself, actually licks his lips, but with admirable
self control, folds his arms over his chest and
celibately goes to sleep.

FINIS

[Reviewer comment: Naughty Alan is forgetting to
inform Reva that she has kids in S'field. With the bits
and pieces of her memory returning, don't you think
she would remember Marah at the wedding or something
else besides Bud? Even if Alan gets to her, I can't
see her forgiving him for not telling her about the
children]
