GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1995
******************************************************************************

PREREQUISITE "SORRY IT'S LATE" EXCUSE: Well, as usual, I had an
apointment on Tuesday that prevented me from starting the update,
Wednesday I agreed to watch my friend's 2 & 3 year old girls (along w/ my
2 1/2 year old son) "in the morning" and wound up having them from
11am-6pm. Needless to say, I didn't get a lot done. Got a call from
another girlfriend at 4AM Thursday saying she was in labor and her
contractions were 2 minutes apart...could she bring her 3 year old son
over, um, **NOW**?!? It's Thursday afternoon and I still have him. (He
got a new baby sister 2 1/2 hours after his folks dropped him off with
me.) Basically, I've been doing the generous friend thing and have blown
you fine GL viewers off! I beg yer ever-lovin' forgiveness! Also, you
might like to know that as of this update I will only be doing the 1st &
3rd updates of each month while the 2nd and 4th are picked up by our
beloved Netwoman, Zena Lee. Being as we are both blessed with work,
Preschoolers and college coursework this works out better for both of us
and, well, hopefully you folks will have the added benefit of both of our
warped senses of humor and more timely updates! You lucky sumsa' beetches!

Always,

ALLIKAT

Now, on with the show!

KNOCK-KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? MATT. MATT WHO? 'MATTWHOITCHU? LET ME IN!
Dinah's step-daddy-to-be is trying to get Dinah to let him in she &
Roger's suite and she is physically barricading the door. She says she's
rather listen to Barry Manilow than let him in. This apparently stirs
something deep inside the former Copa Cabana boy and all-around "Mandy"
lover and her forces his way in with his good shoulder and even better
hip! She starts to storm away, assuming he's there to give her another
anti-Roger lecture but he manhandles her into staying and tells her that
he has the key to everythin she ever wanted. Her look changes from one of
exasperation to that of mild interest.

KNOCK KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? DUCK. DUCK WHO? DUCKWHORATIONS AREN'T PERMITTED
IN AMISH COUNTRY!
Outside Rebecca bend (aka that crappy little cabin in Goshen where she
and Alanspaulding are hanging out) the ducks are swimming in the pond and
a cow and horse grace in peacful tranquility. Inside, Revabecca is
furiously scratching away at some sort of drawing she's working on. As she
examines her sketch, Alan examines her. He comments that it must be some
picture and she says she's not very good. She shows him the illustration.
Although it's crude, it's clearly a representation of Josh Lewis. Alan
says it's not bad and Revabecca realizes that he knows the man on her
paper. She asks if this is "Bud." Outside, at the pond, the frogs chirp,
as in response to her question: "Wise," "Er," they croak.

KNOCK KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? BUD. BUD WHO? BUDWHOFUOCO!!
Josh lovingly instructs Marah & Shayne to get the stuff they need for
their picnic and to leave a note for Annie, who is expected later for
dinner. (They'll probably be hungry after the picnic.) Hawk fumes over
their "happy little habitat" and bitches about his grandaughter being
nice to "the replacement." Hawk needles Josh about Annie's apparent
attraction to Rick Bauer. Josh says that's enough.

KNOCK KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? ANNIE. ANNIE WHO? ANNIE SHORTER AND THAT
NURSE'S SKIRT COULD BE A BELT!
Dr. Rick stares at Annie in disbelief: "Tell me I didn't hear that
right." He says incredulously. Annie explains that the divorce papers
were never filed and Rick says that they had to have been. Annie informs
him that they weren't and that they are still legally married.

ROLL LIGHTHOUSE!

KNOCK KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? HA. HA WHO? HAWHO DID THIS HAPPEN?!?
Rick thinks that Annie is joking and says she almost got him that time.
She insists that she is serious and he argues that he signed the papers
and got a receipt. She says that she did too but that it was just the
divorce agreement and that it needed to be filed with the courts. "I PAID
THE ATTORNEY!" he fumes, looking for some loophole to get him out of this
bad joke. Annie explains that the attorney had a heart attack a few days
before he was supposed to file their case and apparently his wife cleaned
out his home office and briefcase and threw everything away. Ricks starts
to understand and Annie explains that the Attorney's office has agreed to
file "pro bono" but that they are swamped and it will take some time.
***BZZT!*** WRONG ANSWER! "pro bono" is defined as "Done without
compensation for the public good." This is neither since they've already
paid the attorney's fees and I don't think that their divorce really
qualifies as "public good." Also, if your law firm screwed up that badly
I'd think that they'd be jumping to amend their error - perhaps having a
special hearing with a judge and explaining the circumstances and asking
that any waiting period be waived. My guess is that the Dutton-Bauers
probably have a good case to take to the Illinois state bar and an
exceptionally good civil case. ***EDITORIALIZATION OFF!***When the reality of
the situation hits Rick he starts to hyperventalate and gasps that he
can't breathe. He loosens his tie and asks what he's supposed to do.
Annie get in his face (as if it's his fault) and very insistently says that
they have to take action right away because she wants to marry Josh within
the month. Rick just stares at her in disbelief.

KNOCK KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? SHAYNE. SHAYNE WHO? SHAYNE ON YOU FOR
MANIPULATING YOUR GRANDKIDS, HAWK!
Josh explains to Hawk that Annie & Rick dated before they were together
just like he dated others in the past. He says that they live in the
future now and have put the past behind them. Hawk insists that Josh
still has Reva in his heart. The kids enter and ask if Hawk's coming with
them to "pay tribute." Josh tries to tell them that Hawk's too busy but
Hawk says he's not. Josh smiles and says G'pa's coming along and then
murmurs to Hawk that if he gets out of line he'll be out on his ear. Hawk
says he has no problem with that. They all leave carrying a picnic and
various gifts (flowers, cards, a bear,) presumably for the tribute.

JUST A SKETCHY MEMORY! (CAN'T COME UP WITH A KNOCK KNOCK JOKE AND THEY
JUST AIN'T FUNNY ANYWAY!)
Reva explains that the face in her sketch just keeps coming to her. She
again asks if this is the face of "Bud" (hush, hush damn frogs!) Alan
avoids the question and asks her what made her start seeing that face.
She says it has to do with the vision of the car going off the bridge. He
asks if she remembers going into the water and she says she only
remembers waking up. She explains that she was picked up by a Cuban
fishing boat that was illegally fishing in American waters. Because of
the unlawfulness they were unable to return her to the US but instead,
one took her into his home in "The Dry Tortugas" nursed her back to health. She
says she was very ill: suffering from exposure, dehydration, pneumonia. It
took her months to recover but when she did she convinced them to take
her back to the mainland. They did under the cover of darkness and in the
pouring rain, putting her ashore alongside a highway that runs through
the Keys. Alan seems somewhat offended that they didn't do anything further to
help her and she defensively points out how much they risked in returning her
to her country not to mention saving her life, nursing her back to health,
feeding and clothing her for all those months. Alan asks why she didn't
contact the authorities and she emotionally explains that she didn't know
who she was or if anyone was even looking for her. She asks if he thinks
Bud missed her and if he even cared. Alan sighs and settles back in bed.

Updater's note: Microsoft's Bookshelf '95 has this to say about"'Dry
Tortugas National Park': 64,700 acres, S. Florida. It is located on Garden
Key in the Dry Tortugas island group and preserves the largest
all-masonry fort in the Western Hemisphere, Fort Jefferson (1846), which
served as a prison until 1874. Designated Fort Jefferson National
Monument in 1935, it was renamed and became a national park in 1992."

WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT (or) MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING
Matt coyly comments about Rog & Dinah's new digs and speculates about how
much money it must cost to live in their Towers Suite. Dinah says Rog has
enough money for her and Matt questions whether she'd still be with Roger
if everyone loved him. He thinks that her relationship with Rog is just a
form of rebellion and says he's sick of the games that the entire family
is playing. She advises that if he's tired of the games he should stop
playing. He asks if she really loves Rog and she says she adores him.
Matt says that he heard her tell the truth once before, the first time
they met, at the Diner when she said she was just in town to get some
money out of her parents and then she planned to split. She makes excuses
about being tired that night but he says he knows her better than that
and money is what she's really after. He says it's always been about the
money and points out that if the fake kidnapping had gone off without a
hitch she'd be long gone by now. Seeming a bit rattled, she admits that
things didn't go exactly as she'd planned but, waggling her ring finger,
says Roger takes very good care of her. Matt says that she's too
independant a woman to be taken care of: a leader, not a follower. He
asks: "What if I could help you get your hands on your entire trust
fund?" She points out that she'll get it when she's 30 and that she's made
plans for the meantime. He says he could help her get all of it, right now
but the catch is she'd have to get rid of Roger for good.

LET'S GIVE 'EM SOMETHIN' TO TALK ABOUT (or) BABY BABY
The Lindsay-Reeds are in Folly's office at the Urinal and Holly keeps
saying "We need to talk" and Fletch keeps agreeing with everything she
says and avoiding talking about the baby. She insists they need to talk
but Roger walks in. He wants to talk to the society editor about his
engagement notice. ("Thinking of rejoining society, are we, Rog?" quips
Fletch.) Fletch yells for Nick to stop the presses because Dinah Marler
is marrying some sugar daddy old enough to be her father. Rog tells Holly
he's taken her advice and is starting over with someone who loves him
just the way he is. Holly welcomes him to the institution (a little
double intender there?) and says marriage is swell.

MAKE A RUN FOR THE BORDER! (TRY THOSE NEW LIGHT CHICKEN TACOS, EH?)
Annie badgers Rick saying she wants to marry Josh and be an insta-mom and
Rick points out how he did everything she asked when they were divorcing
and that this isn't his fault. He points out that the attorney that
screwed up he hired because she wanted him to. She repeats her desire to
wed Josh and Rick says that he never stood in her way in Chicago and
won't do it now. He says he'll sign whatever and will even sign away his
boxer shorts if she wants. She grabs his arm as he tries to head off for
rounds and says that he doesn't understand, the papers weren't filed and
if they file them now there's a six month waiting period. If they want a
quickie divorce they have to fly to Mexico. (What exactly is the all
fired hurry?) He can't believe that she has the gall to ask him to go to
MX with her and she puts on her perky smile and says it would be her
treat, of course. "FORGET IT MUCHACHA!" is Freddi's not-so-subtle reply!

HALFTIME!!

EAT THE WORM!
Rick tells I-can't-take-it-Annie-more that she can forget about it. She
says she won't forget about it and he tells her that if she's so keen on
remembering she should remember the new Trauma Team he's heading and the
caseload he's handling. He says he can't drop everything to go on a fiesta
with her in order to prepetuate a lie. She asks if she's supposed to
suffer because their lawyer had a heart attack he asks if she'd prefer
his patients suffer. She says all she's asking for is two days. He says
he'd never be able to catch up two days loss and that he feels like a
liar each time he sees Josh. She claims it's not just about she and Josh
and pulls the Marah/Shayne card. Lillian enters and says they need to
fess up-something's obviously wrong between them because she keeps
catching them arguing and feels she has a right to know if there's a
problem with one of her nurses. They both lie that all is fine and she
again says she's got her on on them. After Lil leaves Annie asks why they
always have to be so angry with each other. Rick says Josh is a friend of
his too and maybe the divorce mess up is a good time for her to tell Josh
the truth and that it could be the best thing to ever happen to her.
Annie stares at him with her jaw set firmly.

LET'S GET DOWN TO THE BRASS PLAQUES!
Marah, Shayne, Josh & Hawk arrive at a park. The kids run in and Josh
warns Hawk what a special family time this is for them at that he'd
better behave. They all congregate around a big rock that has a brass
plaque attached to it. The inscription reads: "CROSS CREEK CHILDREN'S
PARK. IN LOVING MEMORY OF WIFE AND MOTHER, REVA SHAYNE LEWIS. JOSH, MARAH
& SHAYNE. YEAR OF OUR LORD 1995." Hawk is a bit flabbergasted and Josh
tells him that they paid for the park cleanup and new equipment and "made
lemons out of lemonade" (they probably had a lot of lemons left over
since Reva wasn't around to use them on her elbows!) Marah wrote the
inscription herself. Hawk says that Josh can't buy everything and that a
brass plaque can't erase his little girl. Josh says that's not what
they're doing but Hawk insists that Josh is just trying to erase the pain
and rob the kids of their last hope. Emotional, he storms out. Marah is
concerned and upset, she thought they had done something nice for their
mama. Josh assures her that they did.

THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL: ROGER OR MONEY?
Matt questions whether Dinah would give up Rog for her trust fund and
Dinah claims that she's not soley motivated by money. "Since when?" retorts
Matt, reminding her that her coldhearted persuit of the almighty dollar
recently included her staging her own kidnapping. She points out that
it's a moot point anyway because Van holds the purse strings and won't
release her grip until Dinah is 30 (and far too old to enjoy it, says she.)
Matt piques Dinahs interest by suggesting that he knows a way she could
get the money sooner. Dinah's ears virtually perk up and she asks him
what he knows. He says he knows that she's too smart to spend the rest of
her life with a man she doesn't even love when she could be kicking back
on the beach in a bikini in Caen. He reminds her that Springfield is NOT
Caen - Caen-sas, he says, but not much the same. Dinah smirks and asks
him to tell her what he knows. He says he will on 2 conditions: 1) that
everything that's said in the room is strictly confidential, and 2) after
she gets her money she makes peace with Van before she drives off into
the sunset. She agrees to the first condition but is startled to find
that Matt expects her to leave town. He observes that Springfield hasn't
exactly agreed with her and says he would expect her to leave town
forever. He suggests that an occasional visit or postcard would be fine
but that she would have to split. She agrees that everything sounds very
good but doesn't believe that she can trust him. He tells her to suit
herself and starts to leave. She stops him and says that they *MAY* have
a deal. She asks what she has to do to get her trust fund. He warns that
there's no way she's supposed to know about any of this and that she must
promise to play by his rules. She does. All Dinah has to do to get her
trust fund is get married, Matt informs her. Her reaction is that of pure
glee. He reminds her that all she has to do is marry someone *BESIDES*
Roger and the trust would be hers. She can't think of anyone who do it
besides Roger and Matt suggests Marcus, but Dinah says that they are no
longer friends. "Okay, fine then, don't marry Marcus," says Matt, "marry me."
Dinah takes a second to absorb what he's suggested, gulps and then laughs
in the face of her mother's intended.

FROM OCEAN TO GOSHEN...WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN
Alan remarks that he wouldn't know if the man in the picture missed Reva
or not but says that he certainly did. He questions how she wound up in
Goshen after being put ashore at the bottom of Florida. She explains that
she hitched and walked and even picked up odd jobs along the way. She had
a bus ticket to Gary but felt drawn to Goshen so she got off the bus
there and stumbled upon the place she lives at now. She blames it on a
force stronger than she that beckoned her there.

MEMORIES & FORGET-ME-NOTS
Meanwhile, Reva's kids are honoring her memory by placing cards, gifts,
teddy bears & flowers on her memorial stone in the park. They sit with
Josh and recall how Reva used to take them there each day (cha,
right...I recall her suffering from severe post partum depression and
having to hire Harley to take them out while we suffered from a severely
bad storyline!) They recall all the fun times that they had there and
recapulate a story of Reva bundling them all up in a big cape and someone
commenting to Josh that "that woman" had two heads. They all laugh their
silly heads off at their goofy presumably post mortem mama! Josh says
that Reva used to comment about the run down condition of the park's play
equipment, saying that the swings were as old as Alexandra Spaulding. He
thinks that restoring the park is a perfect memorial to her - bringing
new life to a place she loved - not unlike the new life they are about to
start with Nurse Annie cute-as-a-button Dutton. The kids run off for a
game of tag (Josh being it, has given them a head start.) Josh tenderly
plants a kiss on his fingers and delivers it to the plaque.

THE GREAT PAPER CHASE
Nick & Fletch are pouring over a page layout as Holly looks on,
concerned. She still wants to talk to Fletcher. Susan enters and asks
Holly if she can borrow Nick for awhile. Holly announces Nick's visitor
and his face lights up when he sees Susan. She's brought him some more
stats for his AIDS story and invites him to dinner. He says he can't get
away. Across the room, Rog asks Holly if she and her husband would like
to come to his engagement party. She bows out and he snidely suggests that
she clear her calendar for the wedding unless she's too large with child
by then. She starts to turn her back but having created an opening, Rog
asks if Fletcher has adknowledged his seed yet. Holly shuts the door in
his face and Roger smirks. Nick approaches him and tells him that they
can't run his announcement in today's edition due to lack of space. He
tells Rog that the only people on the planet who give a damn about his
engagement are he and Dinah anyway.

CRAZY
Dinah asks Matt if he's nuts or if he just thinks she is. She finally
absorbs the fabulous news but says that Matt can't marry her because he's
about to marry her mother (she's obviously not fully familliarized
herself with Lewis family history yet.) Matt says that they'll be
divorced before the ink on their marriage license is dry. She seems
touched that he would do all that for her and he says he'd do anything to
get her out of his hair. She questions whether her mother put him up to
the bizarre suggestion and he says Van knows nothing about it. She says
that Van will go bananas when she finds out but Matt says they'll be fine
and it will get her away from Roger. She tells him he's an idiot and
wonders why she shouldn't just marry ROGER and get the money that way. He
says that he figured she's say that and that he'll tell her why she
shouldn't do that after she finishes laughing.

IF ONLY TANGIE HILL, GIRL REPORTER WERE HANDLING THIS!
Nick faces off with Roger saying that Rog can't stand not being in
controll. As Susan and Fletcher look on, he says that Roger can't stand
how Holly isn't falling for his bait anymore. He says no woman is but Rog
says ONE woman must be. Nick says that Dinah barely has her driver's
license and doesn't count. Rog sez she's old enough and zings Nick with
the fact that he's not seen him with a woman-young or old since Melinda
dumped him and skipped the country. Nick says he'd rather be alone than
playing around with teenagers, calling Rog a dirty old man. Roger says
"Don't knock it till you try it, Nicky!" and takes his leave. Susan gets
the door for Rog and Nick apologizes for the scene she witnessed. She
says she knows about Roger and that he deserved everything Nick said. He
says that he's free now and wonders if the dinner invitation is still
open. Susan says that she has to get going and rushes off suddenly.
Nick informs Holly that the cost is clear and asks if everything is okay
since she and Fletch are acting so strange. She says she's fine but needs
to talk to Fletcher, who bustles in to inform them that they have a
problem in printing. Holly instructs Nick to handle it and kindly demands
that Fletcher sit and talk to her, under his protests. She closes the
door and asks how he feels about the baby they're having.

HOME IS WHERE YOU HANG YOUR FUNKY WHITE CAP
Alan can't believe that Reva just meandered from Florida to Goshen and
she explains the sense of peace she found there. She says it felt like
home, as if she'd been somewhere like it before, so she stayed. Alan is
observing how happy she is there when Charlotte rushes in saying Old
Eliza is doing poorly and that Rebecca needs to tend to her. They hurry out.

GOOD NIGHT NURSE!
Annie tears into Rick for suggesting that she's acting unprofessionally.
He says that he did no such thing as she screeches at him about what a
damn good nurse she is. He calls for a time out and says this has nothing
to to with her professional abilities and everything to do with her
inability to tell her fiancee the truth. She says all she wants is two
lousy days from him, reminding him that he wanted the divorce as much as
she. He agrees and says he'll do whatever she wants him to do including
signing papers, going to Chicago on his day off, whatever but he won't
abandon his professional responsibilities in order to cover her lies to
Josh. At this point, Annie starts to whine and beg and I tell my two year
old "C'mon honey, don't whine. Be a big boy and use your words. Can you
ask Mommy nicely?" I then realize that he's playing in the other room and
the whining I hear is Annie telling Rick that she's afraid she'll lose
Josh if she tells him the truth. (I agree with everyone who said if he
can get over his last wife being married to his dad and brother that he
should be able to handle her comparatively past!) After commercial, they
continue to argue without realizing that Hawk is around the corner
listening. She wonders if she should just rip open her veins as
punishment and Rick says he's not trying to punish her. Lillian discovers
Hawk and he asks what's going on with Rick and Annie. She says it's
probably just a professional difference of opinion and asks what he's doing
there. The old shyster tells her that he's here to invite her over for
dinner. Lil accepts and goes to sign out, leaving Hawk to continue
listening to Rick and Annie. Annie claims that this isn't about patients
or responsibility that he just wants to pay her back. He says she's wrong
but in a furry, she tells him to just forget it and storms off, nearly
running down a patient in a wheelchair. She breezes by Hawk who remains
unseen behind a bunch of balloons.

MORE UNMEMORABLE MAMA MONTAGE
The Lewises talk about how cool the park is and the kids go to set the
table for dinner. Josh looks up wistfully and says "They're good kids, Reva."
His image matches the one that Reva drew, which Alan is looking at in
Goshen. Alan speaks to the image on the sketch: "You don't deserve her, Bud.
You never did and you never will."

MARRIAGE IS A MATTER OF TRUST
Dinah wonders why she can't have her cake and eat it too - marry Rog ang
get her trust fund. Matt says that Rog doesn't love her and if she marrys
him she'll never know if he loves her or just her money. He tells her not
to be an idiot because Rog will take her money and leave her alone and
broke. She says he doesn't know that and he says he's so sure he's
willing to bet everything he cares about on it. Roger enters and demands
to know what the hell is going on.

HEY! NO "TELL US WHAT YOU THINK FOR $.99 A MINUTE!

LOOKS LIKE THIS IS THE END, BUT DON'T MISS THE NEXT ALLIKAT SHOW!
