Afternoon in Springfield, USA...

ROSS'S OFFICE: Ross, Blake & Matt consider Dinah's engagement to Roger.
Ross says it changes everything & must be prevented at all costs, but Matt
& Blake don't see why. Matt thinks Ross ought to just let Dinah make her
own mistakes. Ross reveals that Dinah will get access to her trust fund as
soon as she's married. "Roger is an `I do' away from millions of dollars."

PENTHOUSE: Grinning, Roger carries an ecstatic Dinah over the threshold.
She admires her ring. The best part of the whole thing, she thinks, was
Blake's "deer in the headlights" expression in the jewelry store. Rog's
smile tightens--he's not so sanguine about his daughter's reaction or
Dinah's glee in it. Dinah apologizes for her insensitivity & says she's
sorry Blake can't be happy for them. She can't wait to tell all her
friends. Speaking of which, Marcus rings the bell. Dinah's excited, but
Rog urges her to send him away. She ignores her fiance & runs to the door.

Marcus is underwhelmed by Dinah's news. He has only one thing to say, &
it's to Rog: "Close the door behind us; we're out of here." He slings
Dinah over his shoulder & starts to carry her out. Dinah grabs onto the
doorjamb to stop him.

ANNIE'S APARTMENT: Annie searches for her divorce papers. Surrounded by
boxes, she talks to herself in frustration, unable to find the papers
anywhere. She does find a photo of herself & Rick, cutting their wedding
cake. Josh knocks & she hurriedly hides the photo at the bottom of a box &
closes the box before letting him in. He sees the mess & deduces that she
hasn't yet found the papers. He offers to help, but Annie says she'll take
care of it. She goes to the closet & Josh immediately goes for the closed
box. "Here's one you missed," he says helpfully, as he starts to open it.

Annie says she already looked through that box. It's just full of old
school things. Josh wonders if maybe there are some old love letters in
there too, stuff that will tell him more about her. Annie says they don't
have time to stroll down memory lane & takes the box awayJosh suggests
that since the clerk's office closes at 5, maybe they should just call her
lawyer & get a fax of the papers. She's just wasting time with the search.
She thought she would have found the papers by now. Josh offers to call.
"No!" she insists. She says they won't give Josh any info due to client
confidentiality. "Make the call," demands Josh. Annie finds the number &
dials. She learns that her lawyer is no longer with the. She tells the
secretary what she needs & learns that the papers are in storage, but a
clerk can be sent to get them. She is very grateful & gives her name &
phone number. She turns to Josh. "With any luck, this will be over soon."

ROSS'S OFFICE: Blake says Rog knows about Dinah's trust fund; everyone
does. Ross says Rog doesn't know about the marriage clause, because Dinah
doesn't know. He & Van kept it from her for fear that she'd marry just to
get the dough. As soon as Rog finds out, he'll marry Dinah immediately,
worries Ross. Matt thinks he's doing that already. Ross doesn't believe
that Rog intends to go through with the wedding--he thinks it's just
another way to get back at him & Van. "Unless he can get his hands on a
bit of Chamberlain money--that's like icing on the wedding cake," predicts
Blake. Ross agrees. He wants to call Van right away. Matt says to leave
her out of it. Ross thinks Van needs to, but Matt disagrees. "I want
what's best for Vanessa & she's finished jumping through hoops for Dinah."
Matt says Ross just doesn't want to lose another round to Rog. Ross
insists his only concern is Dinah's well-being, but Matt thinks if that
were true, Ross would have told her about the marriage clause as soon as
she returned to Springfield. Ross says she was too immature to deal with
it. "You just want to control her," accuses Matt. "Control Dinah? Where
have you been?" asks Ross incredulously.

Matt's been watching Dinah long enough & has seen how she's hurt everyone
in her family. If marrying Rog will make her happy, Matt's willing to sing
at the wedding. "It'll be your funeral if you don't let Vanessa know,"
warns Ross. They get into a shouting match about who's right. Ross denies
that it's about the money. "Then let it go," urges Matt. "If Roger can put
up with her royal pain in the butt, he deserves every penny!"

PENTHOUSE: Dinah hangs onto the door frame while arguing with Marcus to
put her down. Marcus says Rog is the wrong guy for her. Rog watches with
wry amusement. Finally, Marcus puts her down & Dinah insists that Rog is
the only one in the world for her & she wants Marcus to be happy for her.
He grudgingly agrees. She asks him to call all their friends in Europe &
invite them to the engagement party, because there's no time to send
invitations. Rog smiles indulgently. Marcus glares at Rog while Dinah
chatters on obliviously about her plans. She wants Marcus to play at the
party & says Rog will buy him a tux if he needs. "I'll make do," Marcus
replies. Rog urges him to hire a backup band or orchestra--"whatever it
takes to make my baby happy." Dinah rushes into Rog's arms. Marcus says
he'll do anything for Dinah, but his tone not exactly loving. Dinah wants
to fly in food from Paris. Rog says the sky's the limit. Dinah cancels her
evening plans with Marcus to plan the party "down to the last jealous
guest." She decides to show off her ring to anyone who will look, "& if
you listen carefully, you can probably hear teeth gnashing all the way up
here." She leaves & Marcus says he's going too. "Good sax takes practice,"
he quips. "So does good acting, & yours needs work," advises Rog.

CEDARS: A nurse startles Rick as he's walking down the hall reading a
chart. His startled reaction startles her in return & they exchange casual
banter. Rick thinks Nurse Phyllis lives for the sexy white shoes & asks if
he can touch them. She laughs & he reverently caresses her clunky,
practical shoe & shivers in mock delight. [ROTFL! Dr. Rick puts me in
stitches every time!] She tells him she rescheduled the trauma team
meeting. He asks her to notify everyone of the change & she assumes he'll
tell Annie. Rick says he's swamped & asks her to take care of it. As she
walks away, he looks disturbed. "Annie, how'd it get to this?" he asks.

Flashback to Rick & Annie in Chicago. She's still in bed & he's adjusting
his clothes. "What a way to start the day," says Rick with a grin. Annie
agrees, especially for a guy who "doesn't like to get up in the morning."
;-) She jumps out of bed & helps him with her tie. Rick is excited about
his plans for a trauma team at Chicago General. She's excited too, for him
& for herself. They both like the rush--it's just like... you know. He
knows. She knows he knows. They kiss passionately. "What did I do to
deserve you?" asks Rick. "Just extremely lucky," responds Annie. Rick
agrees. They fall into bed to "get up" one more time.

ANNIE'S APT: Annie apologizes for messing things up, but Josh says they'll
just file the license another day. "What did I do to deserve you?" asks
Josh lovingly. "Just extremely lucky," responds Annie automatically. Deja
vu for Annie. She wants to clean up the mess & wait for the call from
Chicago, but Josh reminds her they have dinner plans with the kids. Annie
says Josh should go; she'll wait for the call & meet them later. Josh
kisses her passionately & suggests that he doesn't need to leave just yet.
He can't wait until they're married. "We're only a fax away" from the
license, says Annie. She urges him out the door & sighs after he's gone.

ROSS'S OFFICE: "What is it with you people & money?" asks Matt. "You keep
Dinah in the dark about it, she gets herself kidnapped for it & now she's
entitled to it & you don't want to give it to her!" Ross repeats that it's
not about money, but Dinah's trust fund is worth millions. Matt says it's
time to let her have her way. If Rog blows the money, so what? Ross can't
stop caring; Matt's not asking him to, but thinks Ross is obsessed with
Dinah, Roger & the Money(tm). Ross is trying to save Dinah from the worst
mistake of her life. "Thorpe probably thought the same thing when you
hooked up with his daughter," suggests Matt. Ross married for love; Rog is
marrying for revenge. Blake agrees. Even though Rog is her father, she
knows he's a user with no conscience & no regrets. He`s harbored a grudge
against the Chamberlains for years & has finally found the cruelest
revenge. "Even she doesn't deserve what my father can do. He's gonna take
her money, he's gonna take her love, & he's gonna leave her nothing. If we
don't try to stop it, we're just as bad as he is." Matt's fed up because
his life is on hold thanks to The Brat. He's gonna do something. Dinah
flounces in, blinding everyone with her ring. She's met with dead silence.

LEWIS HOUSE: Hawk's relaxing in front of the TV when Josh enters & says
it's time for a talk. He thinks it's time for Hawk to leave. After he &
Annie get married they'll be moving into their own house with the kids.
Hawk thinks he & Van & Henry would make a happy little family (!), but
Josh doesn't agree. Hawk suggests a suite in the Regency. Bzzt! A room at
the boardinghouse? Maybe, but Josh isn't paying. Hawk moans about being
homeless & Josh says Hawk has to take care of himself. Josh is willing to
get Hawk a job at Lewis Construction. "Me, work?!" says Hawk with
surprise. He corrects himself--he can't work in construction because of
his bad ticker. Josh says they'll find something. He also circled some For
Rent ads in the paper. Hawk tries playing the Reva card again, but Josh
isn't falling for it. The main reason he's put up with Hawk at all is for
the kids' sake. Josh reminds Hawk of all the problems he's caused,
especially his performance at the courthouse. "If you're gonna nitpick..."
mumbles Hawk. Josh threatens to cut Hawk off from the kids if he steps out
of line again. Hawk wants to talk about Marah--he caught her in a "bold-
faced fib." When he called her on it, she said, "`It's OK to lie. Annie
does.' That Mutton woman has pulled her wool over your eyes."

ANNIE'S APT: Annie finds the wedding photo & stares at it, remembering.
... Candles flicker in the apartment as Annie walks in. Rick's in bed, but
not asleep. He keeps having the same bad dream, about Annie. She says
she's had a lot on her mind lately. "About Jake?" asks Rick. [Aha! So they
haven't forgotten about Jake!] Annie says nothing's going on between her &
Jake; she just had a drink with some friends. "You're lying," says Rick,
with a tear in her eye. "You never could have just one drink." Annie
apologizes & says it will never happen again. Rick doesn't buy it because
he's heard it too many times before. Annie begs him to forgive her. "I
messed up, I know; I'm sorry! I'll do anything. I'll tell Jake we can't be
friends anymore. Just please, don't give up on me!" Rick takes her in his
arms & says he could never give up on her. "You're my wife; I love you."
... Annie hangs her head, then stuffs the photo back in the box.

PENTHOUSE: Rog says Marcus has made it pretty obvious that he's not
thrilled about Dinah's impending nuptials. It depends on whether you're
going to marry her or not, says Marcus. Rog thinks Marcus has quite an
attitude, considering that Rog has been footing his bill & not asked any-
thing in return. "Until now," notes Marcus. Rog urges Marcus to be happy
for Dinah. Marcus says he & Dinah don't lie to each other. Rog doesn't
want to see Dinah's one good friend go anywhere, but he doesn't like being
used. "It makes me want to stop... being generous." Marcus says he doesn't
need Rog's handouts. "You don't need my enmity either," cautions Rog. This
kind of thing is exactly why Marcus is concerned about Dinah's future with
Rog. Marcus is not scared of Roger, but he's worried about Dinah. "I saved
her life," reminds Rog. "Well, then you had just better keep on keeping
on." Marcus excuses himself, saying he has to practice, so at least one of
them can come through for the bride. He leaves & Rog looks grim.

ROSS'S OFFICE: Dinah wonders why no one's talking to her. Blake passes,
having wasted enough breath for one day. Dinah thinks Blake's pouting
because she was wrong; Rog does love Dinah enough to marry her. "Don't
worry--I promise to be a better stepmother to you than you've been to me."
Ross says Rog is using Dinah to hurt him & Van. Dinah wonders if Van has
heard the good news yet. "We forgot to call her," says Matt. Dinah thinks
they should do it right away. Van can help her shop for china & crystal.
Matt says Van has had enough of Dinah's shenanigans & Dinah senses that
Matt's jealous because she'll be a bride before he's a groom. "Well, don't
be. Call Mother, sound the all clear, tell her it's safe to come home.
Roger doesn't want the drooling Peter; he wants me. And whatever my honey
wants, my honey gets."

Ross wonders what Dinah wants. Why did she say yes to Rog? "Are you so
desperate for love? For money? Or did you just want to hurt your parents?"
Ross says if she wants to hurt them, she should get a nose ring or do a
centerfold, not ruin her own life. What Dinah wants is for Ross & Van to
be happy for her. "I found a man who loves me." "You're cheating on my dad
already?" quips Blake. Ross chuckles in spite of himself. Dinah is dead
serious: why would Rog marry her if he didn't love her? It's not for money
--she won't see any until the next century. It's not for sex--he could
have any woman he wants. She insists that Rog loves her & Van can "eat my
bouquet." She hopes Ross will give her away at her spectacular wedding.
"Think Charles & Di, minus the accents & the divorce." Dinah invites Matt
to take his turn at talking her out of it. Matt walks out without a word.

PENTHOUSE: "Are you having a mid-life crisis or have you just lost your
mind?" asks Leo, invitation in hand. He can't believe Rog is actually
going to marry "this very young, young little piece of fluff." suggests an
insanity defense. With a grin, Rog says he's engaged, but "I said nothing,
notice, about getting married." Leo gets it. Does this mean he can call
off the search for Hart? No, Rog needs him now more than ever. Leo reminds
Rog that he's running out of money. Rog says everyone is going to pay for
using Peter as a pawn. Dinah's just a diversion `til he gets his ducks in
a row, then it's open season on his enemies. Leo gives Rog a
congratulatory hug & Rog tells him not to worry. Dinah is fine. Rog's only
concern is Marcus. He asks Leo to do some digging on the guy.

ROSS'S OFFICE: "You said to come see you if I thought Dinah was in
trouble," says Marcus to Ross. Oops, he didn't notice that Dinah there. He
plays it straight with her: he promised to let Ross know if he thought she
was in trouble. Dinah feels betrayed, but Marcus insists he's her friend &
is worried about her. She asks why he didn't say anything earlier. He knew
she wasn't going to hear anything negative. She reminds him how generous
Rog has been to him & he replies that Rog will want payback & it will be
steep. He urges her to break the engagement & they'll go someplace exotic
together. Dinah thinks he's siding against her too, but he says it's not
about sides. "It's about you being all right & you being safe." Dinah
thought she could trust Marcus. Marcus says she can; it's Rog she should
worry about. Dinah thinks Rog is the only one she can trust & storms away.
"And by the way, you are NOT the world's best sax player!"

ANNIE'S APT: Annie is doodling on a pad. She's written "Annie Lewis,"
surrounded by hearts & flowers. The phone rings. It's the law firm, about
the divorce papers. "What?!" she says. "What am I supposed to do? I have a
fiance who wants to get married right away." Whatever the caller tells her
makes her very upset. She hangs up & runs out the door.

LEWIS HOUSE: Josh says Annie doesn't lie. Hawk says Josh should talk to
Marah or Rick. Marah heard Rick accuse Annie of lying. Josh accuses Hawk
of visiting Rick to dig up dirt on Annie. Hawk was just looking out for
his family, but Josh says Hawk was looking out for himself. Hawk heard
Rick & Annie were close & wanted to find out how close. Josh says he knows
all about Rick & Annie--they are no longer involved. Josh thinks Marah
misunderstood whatever she heard. He knows everything about Annie & Rick.
"I wonder," says Hawk. Josh orders Hawk out of the house. Hawk plays the
grandkids card again. Josh says Hawk had better pack & leave before he &
Annie get married. And if Hawk brings up the "alleged" conversation
between Rick & Annie again, Josh promises to cut Hawk off without a job &
without his grandkids. He's not going to let Hawk interfere anymore.

CEDARS: Annie accosts Rick & tells him something awful has happened. "Josh
found out we were married & he dumped you for lying," guesses Rick. Not
yet, says Annie. "It's about our divorce."

PENTHOUSE: Leo asks where he should start investigating Marcus. Rog
suggests "our people in Europe." Sad-faced Dinah enters & Rog dismisses
Leo. Dinah tells Rog how her moment of glory was ruined by Marcus stabbing
her in the back. It seems he was a spy for Ross. Rog says it's a lesson--
very few people deserve your trust. Dinah knows she can only trust Rog.
He's says he has to finish with Leo & tells her to take a bubble bath &
then put on her slinkiest gown, because he's going to take her somewhere
special to forget all the earlier unpleasantness. She wants to know where,
but he says it's a surprise. "Trust me," he smiles.

"That is one High-Maintenance Bimbo," comments Leo when Rog rejoins him.
Rog says she's worth the effort if she can keep Ross & Van diverted `til
he brings out the big guns. "Dinah's a sweet young thing, I want to tell
you, but marriage is not an option."

ROOSEVELT PARK: Matt sits on a bench & rubs his beard. "There's got to be
a way," he muses. He watches a boy playing chess with his grandpa. "How
come you always win?" asks the boy. "The secret is to keep your eye on the
queen. The queen is the key to winning. Once she's out of the game, it's
all but over." Matt gets an idea & strides out of the park purposefully.

ROSS'S OFFICE: Marcus is upset because Dinah won't speak to him & is still
going to marry Rog. Ross says maybe she'll come around. Marcus advises
Ross to give up the "parry & thrust" with Dinah. "Life's too short. Find a
new crusade." He walks out. Ross says Marcus is just another non-parent,
but Blake thinks Marcus is right. "Why make ourselves sick worrying about
ways to stop the wedding when there isn't going to be one?" She doesn't
think Rog really wants a "self-centered ball & chain." She suspects the
engagement is just a ploy to really tick off Ross & Van. "If Roger finds
out about the marriage clause, she's going to be the Bride of Frankenstein
faster than you can sing O Promise Me," predicts Ross. How will Rog find
out if Dinah doesn't know? asks Blake.

PENTHOUSE: Dinah answers the door & is disappointed when it's Matt. She
starts to close the door in his face, but he's there to give her what she
really wants. "Really? You're too late. I'm faithful to Roger." Matt says
he's talking about money, not sex. "I can help you tap the mother lode."
She asks if he's Santa Claus. "More like Monti Hall. Let's you & I make a
deal." Dinah smiles eagerly.

CEDARS: Rick says when two people are divorced, they're supposed to go
their separate ways. "What part of that don't you understand?" Annie says
that's the problem--they're *not* divorced. "We're still married." Rick is
paralyzed by shell-shock as the screen fades to black.
