GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS
* David plays hero, but the hijackers get away
* Tangie & AM share some quality time
* Alan plays puppeteer with Holly, Roger, Ross & Blake
* Blake gets the gumshoe bug again

A night full of intrigue in Springfield, USA...
(is there any other kind?)

BOATHOUSE: Tangie tries to call Cutter to report her ID of Harry Jones in
the mug book, but Cutter's out on a case. AM & Tangie debate about
whether it's a good idea to tell the cops; Tangie wins by saying she'll
tell them *she* saw the man attack her & keep AM out of it completely. AM
is still worried because Fisk said Jones was such a nutcase. Then he
beats himself up for thinking that his own father was trying to kill him
& for making Tangie a prisoner in her own house. She tells him he's being
ridiculous & shows him her little gun. She thinks it's a good idea if
they both know where it is, just in case.

ALAN'S LAIR: The bad doctor shows up with some vials that Alan
blackmailed him into getting. The bad doctor leaves & Alan shows off his
acquisition to Susan, describing them as his insurance policy should
Roger decide to back out of their agreement. "This will keep him honest."
[Couldn't read the box -- could this be sodium pentathol, i.e., "truth
serum"?]

SPRINGFIELD JOURNAL: Holly [looking very sophisticated with her hair up
in a smooth chignon] is worried that Blake is standing between Alan &
Spaulding; Roger says it's not an issue because Alan won't do anything to
jeopardize their business relationship. Holly is sure that Alan will go
after what he wants "& it's going to be like Chinese water torture
waiting for him to make his next move."

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Ross catches Blake on her way out the door with her hands
full of shopping bags. She was on her way back to the dept. store to
return some things (13, to be exact) that she bought impulsively at a
one-day sale. Ross distracts her by starting to munch on her neck. "Does
this mean I don't have to make that call to Shopaholics Anonymous?" asks
Blake. Ross says that it means she won't be going out alone at night.
Blake muses that Ross has been rather protective lately; overprotective,
in fact. Ross is saved by the phone; it's our friend Susan, claiming to
be from the insurance company & wanting to get together to talk about the
damage to Blake's car. Ross sets up a meeting at Company in half an hour.

VACANT LOT: The hijacker holding Gabriella orders Cutter & Dylan to step
away from the van or the girl gets it. Cutter whispers to Dylan to go
along. He shouts to Levy to do what the hijackers say. Cutter & Dylan
slowly back away from the van, hands up. David, huddled below the
dashboard, wonders what's going on. He stays low. The chief hijacker
(seems from his accent & the tattoo on his arm to be the guy who was on
the phone with the construction-site mole the other day) drags Gabby to
the back door of the van, gun to her head as David watches, unseen, from
inside. Gabby looks honestly scared, but maybe she's just a good actress.
The hijacker warns them to just wave bye-bye as he & his pals drive away.

Cutter tries unsuccessfully to talk the guy into letting Gabby go. While
the hijacker is distracted by the conversation with Cutter, David moves
into the bay of the van, grabs the hijacker's gun arm from behind, elbows
him in the face, & frees Gabriella. The cops chase after the hijackers
while David lands on top of Gabby, who doesn't know what to say except
thanks. "What the hell are you doing here?" asks David.

COMPANY: Blake wonders if she should go into the insurance business. Ross
says it would be safer than the PI business, plus she'd have the added
benefit of staring at actuarial tables all day. "Oooh, actuarial tables,"
coos Blake, as she fans away the sexual heat. Ross plays along, speaking
enticingly of balloon payments, escalating, undulating. As she leaves her
seat to join him in his, Blake reminds Ross: "You promised to never talk
to me about escalating in public." [ROTFL!] She wraps herself around him
as he admits how weak he is. Then he breaks the mood by reminding them
both that there's nothing sexy about all the glass in Blake's car being
blown to smithereens. Blake thinks that since nothing was taken, it was
either a bunch of kids with nothing better to do, or someone who knew it
was her car. "And why would anybody want to do that to me?"

JOURNAL: Roger closes the blinds as he & Holly try to decide what, if
anything to tell Blake. Holly thinks they should tell her she's a trustee
& should sign anything Alan asks her to, since he can't get anywhere
without Van & Alex, neither of whom will cave in. Rog thinks they should
save that card & instead they agree to tell Blake that she has something
Alan wants & she should be on her guard. Holly gets a message from Blake
asking her to spend the evening together. Perfect timing.

VACANT LOT: David & Gabby determine that they're both OK. They get up &
she tells him he took an awful chance. He tells her to forget about it &
she says she never will. Cutter & Dylan return & Cutter lays into David
for taking a stupid chance that could have gotten lots of people hurt.
David maintains that he knew what he was doing. Cutter warns Gabby to
stick around & asks who she is. Dylan says she's David's girlfriend,
obviously wanting to put Cutter off the scent that she's a material
witness to the original hijacking. David says they now know there's a spy
on Dylan's construction crew & that someone's out to make Dylan's life
hell. [Excuse me, but didn't we know this before?] Gabby takes advantage
of this heated exchange & runs off. Cutter sends Levy after the girl. The
uniforms return & admit that they lost the baddies. Cutter says they
don't even have descriptions. David mentions that the chief baddy had a
tattoo on his forearm. Cutter mentions the anonymous tip about a shoulder
tattoo. The boys decide it could be some kind of gang mark.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie & AM admit that things seem scarier now that they know
who's after them. AM self-flagellates some more about blaming his father.
He hopes Alan never finds out what he thought. Tangie reassures him that
as soon as Harry is caught, Alan will come out of hiding & they'll be
able to talk. "He has a lot of reasons to see you." She says she feels
she knows Alan through AM. He speaks of his dreams of Alan & admits that
he doesn't even know what to say to his father. He's so different than he
was when his father went away. Tangie reminds him how courageous he was
to save her when he was sick & bleeding. He thinks she's more than repaid
him. The moment seems ripe for a kiss, so Tangie decides to try Cutter
again. No luck. She explains to AM that she only wants to deal with
Cutter on this case because he's been so involved in it, coming down to
check out every little noise. Then she remembers that she never told
Cutter about Blake's car being vandalized. Maybe that was Harry Jones
too, she theorizes. Tangie wants to go talk to Blake to see if she has
some clues. She gives AM the gun, but he says he would feel better if she
took it with her. He watches after her from the door as she leaves.

COMPANY: Blake & Ross decide they've been stood up by the insurance lady.
As they get up to leave, Blake spots the bad doctor entering & recognizes
him as the man she saw leaving Tangie's house. Blake decides she wants a
burger, but Ross gets beeped & goes to the phone while Blake goes to the
bar to order. She makes small talk with a distracted Bridget -- kinda
slow, just the regulars, huh? No, pretty busy, says Jet. Blake points out
the bad doc--looks like he's been here forever. Never seen him before,
notes Jet. Something falls & makes a clatter off camera (clumsy stage-
hand?) & Jet comments nonchalantly: "We have a ghost." [ROTFL! Nice
cover, Melissa!] Jet goes to take an order & Blake eyes the bad doc. Ross
returns & says the call was from Roger, demanding to see Ross right away.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Holly knocks & calls for Blake, but gets no answer. She
opens the door & pokes her head in. The house is dark. The light comes on
& Holly sees Alan seated comfortably in an armchair. He welcomes her &
says he's ready to give her that interview now. "I'm in a very chatty
mood tonight." Holly's jaw hits the floor.

She recovers & demands to know how Alan got in. He says the door was
unlocked. He invites her to have a seat & get reacquainted. He knows
she's aware of his "partnership" with Roger & since she & Rog "are
enjoying your unique version of conjugal bliss," that makes Holly part of
things. She'd rather stick her hand in a scorpion's nest than be partners
with Alan & threatens to send him back to the slammer for breaking &
entering. Alan warns that this wouldn't be in her daughter's best
interest. There's a knock at the door; Alan tells Holly to get rid of
whoever it is. He hides in the back of the house as Holly greets Tangie.
They chat about Blake's car troubles. Tangie tells Holly she's looking
for clues & says she doesn't feel safe in her own house anymore.

JOURNAL: Ross & Rog disagree over whether Blake should know about her
position as Alan's trustee. Ross thinks it's unnecessary since Alan's
still in prison. Rog wants her to be prepared & says he'll tell her if
Ross won't. Ross wants to spare Blake the grief as long as possible &
Alan still has 2 months left on his sentence. Rog seems to silently
debate whether to tell Ross that Alan's out, then picks up the phone.

CARRIAGE HOUSE/JOURNAL: The phone rings & Holly answers. Rog tells her to
go ahead & tell Blake. Check. Ross says Blake's not home. Check and mate.
Holly doesn't let on that it's Roger. She announces that Blake's not home
& offers to take a message. Rog asks if something's wrong. Holly pretends
to take a message & hangs up.

Ross wonders what Holly's doing in his supposedly empty house. Rog thinks
something is wrong & runs out. Ross calls the insurance company to ask
about agent Ruth Warren. He discovers they have no such agent & follows
Rog out the door.

COMPANY: Bridget peers nervously out the window. Maggie tries to help the
inebriated bad doc, who is now feeling very talkative. Blake listens in.
"He thinks he can get me to do anything, but no more, because I'm
finished with him. I'm telling him to his face." The doc staggers out &
Blake follows at a discreet distance. Dylan & David return & Jet runs out
to the porch to get the scoop. David recaps the whole scene. Dylan thinks
David is trying to protect Gabby somehow & wonders what David's not
telling him. David's had enough & heads inside.

Ross shows up, looking confused, & asks if he just saw Blake getting into
a taxi. Jet confirms. Ross runs after her.

BOATHOUSE: AM scares Tangie by opening the door as soon as she arrives.
He was worried because she was gone so long (an hour). He steps outside &
enjoys a few breaths of fresh air. He empathizes with his dad being shut
in for 5 years. They decide they shouldn't take what they have for
granted. Back to reality, Tangie fills AM in on her clueless trip. Then
she comes clean about the questions she asked Blake about Alan. She
mentions "the man" & theorizes that he's a potential Spaulding investor.
"It didn't feel right," she says. "Maybe you should have asked me," AM
says. That wouldn't have felt right either, she replies. AM says she
didn't do anything wrong. She's not sure anymore if she should trust this
man. AM advises her not to see him anymore "because you shouldn't be
involved with anyone who makes you feel bad about yourself."

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Holly refuses to tell Alan a thing. Alan knows Holly is
in cahoots with Rog. They trade a few barbs. "We may not be as docile as
you remember. Keep that in mind when you approach my daughter." Alan says
he wants them all to be friends. Rog arrives outside & peers through the
open blinds at Alan's back. "Never say never," answers Holly.

ALAN'S LAIR: The bad doc lets himself in as Blake watches. She stares up
at the house in some wonder. Inside, the doc helps himself to Alan's
booze as Susan tells him the boss isn't in. The doc gives her a message:
he's no drug runner; he's a physician, a healer. Blake turns in terror as
Ross grabs her from behind. He asks why she's there & she explains about
following the guy from Tangie's house & how it didn't seem right that he
had "something hot" going on with T. Then she berates herself ("How
pathetic am I?") for hanging around in bushes & following strange men &
peering in windows to investigate her friend's love life. "What is it
with me, Ross? Why do I find everyone else's life so much more
interesting than mine?" Maybe because it is. She feels useless.

As the door opens, they hide. The doc leaves & doesn't see them. Ross
wants Blake to feel useful & have a life. "But dammit, not like this."

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Roger signals toward Alan's briefcase as Alan decides the
convo is over. Alan sees no reason he & Holly & Rog can't all be friends
& work together. Holly wonders what's in Alan's briefcase that he hasn't
opened -- some document she has to sign in blood? Then she gets nervous &
thinks she hears someone outside. She asks Alan to investigate & offers
to go with him. He happily assumes the role of chivalrous male, leaving
the briefcase sitting on a small table by the window. Rog quickly enters
& rifles through the case. He finds the drugs, takes one vial from the
carton & replaces the carton in the case. He replaces the case & slips
back outside. Alan & Holly return, having decided there was no prowler.
Holly sees Alan out. Rog enters & compliments Holly on her brilliance &
nerves of steel. He shows her the vial he appropriated.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Gabby huddles under the covers as Jet tells David that
Gabby hasn't been in her room in hours. David says he'll just turn off
the lights, then. He enters & finds her. He gives her major grief for
screwing things up royally & telling her she's a selfish bitch. "It's not
worth being alive if the only person you care about is yourself." He gets
really angry when she doesn't even turn to face him & rolls her over to
reveal a tearstained face & major shiner. He gets all concerned & wants
to know who did it to her. She just cries.

Downstairs, Dylan sits motionless in the darkened restaurant. Jet comes
down in her nightgown, relieved that he wasn't hurt. She kneels at his
feet as Dylan expresses his frustration about his life being all screwed
up & not knowing who wants to hurt him or why.

Upstairs, David wipes Gabby's tears & dabs at her bruise & asks if the
chief hijacker was the one who hit her. He realizes she didn't have these
marks on her when he rescued her earlier. She says it was dark & bruises
take a while to show up. David can't understand what kind of man would do
such a thing. [Heck, the guy had a gun; what's a few punches?] Gabby
thinks she deserved it. David is aghast & says she should never feel that
way. She says she ruined everything & apologizes. He tells her to forget
it. The reason she came was that she was scared for David; she couldn't
just sit & wait. She cries some more & David comforts her.

BOATHOUSE: AM & Tangie jump up at the sound of a siren. It passes by, but
Tangie thinks they ought to go inside. AM doesn't want to. He's real
happy sitting there quietly with Tangie, listening to the sounds of the
night. "It's the closest thing to peace I ever felt." They stare at each
other for an endless moment, then Tangie kisses AM. Twice. He doesn't
look too upset, but she gets antsy, stands up & apologizes.

OUTSIDE ALAN'S LAIR: Blake asks Ross if the old guy looked like someone
Tangie would be interested in. He agrees not, but wants to get going
because they're trespassing & no one's paying Blake to investigate the
guy. Blake says if she doesn't find a more constructive way to channel
her energy, she's going to do something "seriously stupid." Maybe she
should take Holly up on the offer to take over for Tangie while T is on
sick leave. Ross urges her to seriously consider anything other than
working for Frank, as long as it doesn't require walking around in the
dark at night by herself.

Alan shows up in time to see them leave.

CARRIAGE HOUSE (OR POSSIBLY REVA-BEND): Rog & Holly consider the
pharmaceutical vial. [The label seems to say "PCI."] They don't know what
the drug is, but Rog figures Alan must be on a pretty large dose, since
there were 4 vials in the briefcase. Holly speculates that it's insulin;
Rog says it's not & vows to find out what it is & why Alan has it.

ALAN'S LAIR: Alan opens his briefcase & checks the drug carton. One vial
is missing. He smiles triumphantly as the screen fades to black.
