Sorry this is so late, folks. I've had an unusually hectic (but fun)
Labor Day weekend & I'm heading out of town for a few days. See you soon!

GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS
* AM & Cutter play hide `n' seek on the beach
* Bill & Michelle get some quality time
* Alan entertains his family in prison
* Rog & Holly entertain themselves in the Spaulding Mansion

A dark summer night in Springfield, USA...

BOATHOUSE: Cutter presents the paper scrap saying "Need something for
fever" to Tangie. She claims to not recognize it; Cutter thinks it's odd
that the paper is perfumed. He tells her to go inside & look at the mug
shot book while he takes another look around. When she gets inside, she
immediately grabs a bottle of aspirin/Tylenol-type stuff.

AM'S HIDEY-HOLE: A feverish AM reads Tangie's note, then buries it,
vowing, "I won't let my father hurt you."

CARROLLTON PRISON: Everyone but Alan salts their food heavily. Alan asks
why AM didn't join the rest of the family. Alex says he's away on
business. Alan presses the point--did Alex relay the invitation? Alex
lies & says yes. Everyone stares at her. Alex breaks down & says she
knows AM has already visited Alan & told him everything & the truth is
she has no idea where he is. Alan thanks her for her "refreshing candor,"
then asks, "What in hell made you think you could drive my son away from
everything he had a perfect right to?"

SPAULDING HOUSE O'MYSTERY: The "butler" pretends to call Alex on the
house phone while Rog & Holly cool their heels. Rog takes the phone, but
it seems Alex has hung up. Rog decides he'll have to go upstairs & talk
to Alex in person. The butler tries rather unconvincingly to block the
way, then allows Roger to flip him. He feigns unconsciousness as Rog &
Holly run upstairs.

BEACH: Ben, Michelle & Ben all stand around rather uncomfortably. Ben
wants to eat. Bill suggests that if he's bored, he go take a walk &
they'll catch up to him. Ben's not taking the hint. Cutter comes by &
wonders what the kids are doing out by themselves on the beach; Bill lies
that Dylan is collecting driftwood for a fire. Cutter gives them the
usual warnings about fire safety, then asks if the kids know of any good
"hiding places" in the area. They suggest the burnt-down lighthouse,
under the boathouse stairs & a wrecked boat somewhere down the beach.
Cutter heads off & Michelle chides Bill for lying to a cop. Bill says he
hates Cutter for putting handcuffs on his dad. Bill apologizes, then
takes Ben aside to try to convince him to go ahead to the pizza place so
he can talk to Michelle. "Talk?" asks Ben disbelievingly. Bill says he
wants to make sure Michelle's not mad at him. He gives Ben enough money
for all the food. "I'll pay for my own," says Ben. He huffs off. Bill
goes back to Michelle & tells her that Ben was hungry so he went ahead to
the pizza place. Michelle thinks Ben looked mad. Bill says he's not
hungry yet. "Are you?" "I guess not," she replies. Gingerly, Bill slides
his hand over & takes Michelle's hand. A little smile plays across her
lips as Bill wonders what to do next.

HOUSE O'MYSTERY: Rog knocks on Alex's bedroom door to no avail, then
enters. It's empty but looks as though someone just left. Rog leaves
Holly there to check the other upstairs rooms.

PRISON: Donna serves barely identifiable chocolate pudding; Alex declines
with the excuse that she's giving it up for Lent. Alan remembers how Alex
hid chocolate pudding from him in shoebox, but was dismayed to discover
that the ants had found it instead. She thinks he hasn't changed, but he
says she's wrong: "I used to take pleasure in your anguish, but not
anymore... I've come to want a little peace & harmony, especially in my
own family. Maybe you could tell me why you would like to make that
impossible." Nick tries to stick up for Alex, as does Fletch, both saying
that AM brought his troubles on himself. Alan thinks it's time for him to
protect his boy's interests. Alex reminds him that the only son Alan ever
cared about was Phillip, and *she* was the one who brought AM into the
family & the business. She tells how she offered AM the presidency & he
turned it down. Nick verifies this. Alan thinks AM may have been
deferring in favor of his father. "In another world you might come back
to reign!" laughs Alex. She thinks Alan could provide lots of advice to
Nick & officially announces that on Dec. 1, Nick will become Spaulding
president. Alan stands up to join the toast, then crushes his little
plastic cup in one hand.

BEACH: Tangie leaves the aspirin along with the food she previously left
out. She adds a note saying that someone else knows he's around & she
didn't see his note until that person found it. She hopes the stuff she's
leaving will help, but if not, "you know where I live." She folds some
money into the note & places it under the covered plate.

Down by AM's hidey-hole, Cutter pokes around.

PRISON: Alan asks about Nick's qualifications for the presidency. Nick
says they're "unconventional," but he's really enjoying the work & seems
to have a natural ability for it. Mindy backs him up. Alex says Nick's
instincts are as good or better than Alan's. Alan says he can remember
every board meeting verbatim & knows the various members' secrets. Nick
says he'll pick up that stuff with time. Alan likes Nick's attitude--
"maybe we can find him something in sales"--but forbids her anointing him
president. Alex says Alan has nothing to say about it, as the vote will
take place in November while he's still in jail. Alan says Alex has a
responsibility to the shareholders; she refuses to be lectured on
responsibility by a man who got himself sent to jail. He brings up her
escapades in Europe ("dropping in on the bedrooms of stray musicians").
Nick & Fletch decide enough is enough. Alex demands to know exactly what
Alan is accusing her of. "You forgot me," he replies. "You forgot the
promise we made... nothing that was spoken... we understood we would
fight with each other, but if anyone attacked you, I would defend you and
you would do the same for me... no one would ever come between us until I
came here & you turned to Roger Thorpe." Alex feels she's already been
punished enough for that mistake. "Some things earn us a special place in
hell & that may be one of them." The guard pops in to remind Alan of his
curfew. Fletch races Donna & Ginger to the limo & the rest of the crew
follows, leaving Alex alone with her brother. She says she hasn't
forgotten & her heart is in her throat whenever she thinks about him
coming home. "But I'll be ready," she vows.

HOUSE O'MYSTERY: Rog returns & can't figure it out--the house is empty.
Holly notes that the champagne was just poured & the ice is still frozen.
They decide this is decidedly odd & that they should beat feet. ("They're
gonna get caught," warns my boyfriend.) Rog opens the door & finds
himself chest-to-face with Ben Reade. "What are you doing in Miss
Spaulding's bedroom?" demands Ben.

BEACH: Cutter finds no sign of the mystery attacker in the remains of the
lighthouse. Meanwhile, AM drags himself along the beach & disappears just
as Michelle & Bill come into view. M remembers when she ran away & Bill
hid her in his house. She was scared, but Bill made her feel better. He
remembers how she looked that night--really pretty. "That was the first
time I ever wondered what it would be like to kiss you." M turns away
shyly & Bill immediately volunteers that he wasn't actually going to try
it at that point in time. "You probably would have thought it was totally
lame." "Maybe," she replies, but "I've changed a lot since then." She
turns back to him & Bill leans in for the score. He kind of gets her
slightly to the side of her lips & neither of them looks too sure of what
to do next.

HOUSE O'MYSTERY: Ben finds it highly unlikely that Alex & Fletch would
invite Rog to dinner. Holly insists they had an invitation. "No way--they
hate your guts!" asserts Ben diplomatically, adding that the Spauldings
had other plans. He says they left at 7. Rog cuts him off by mentioning
the butler; Ben cuts Rog off to say there is no butler. Stalemate. Holly
says it's time to leave. As they walk down the hall, Ben warns them not
to take anything, or he'll call the cops.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie flips through mug shots while AM approaches from
outside. She hears something (his labored breathing, perhaps), and so
does Cutter, apparently, as he calls out, "Tangie, is that you?" AM
thinks he sees his father standing off near some bushes & jumps off the
porch & out of sight. Cutter & Tangie touch base & she says she only
heard him. He sends her back inside while he continues to investigate. As
Tangie goes back inside, the camera focuses on Alan's picture in the mug
shot book. (Oddly, he looks exactly as he does now, beard & all, even
though Alan didn't have a beard back when he got sent to prison.
Continuity check!)

PRISON: Alan thanks Fisk & verifies that the wing they're in has been
deserted since it was closed 3 years ago. He promises Fisk that he'll
always have a friend & a job, then gives him an envelope for the men who
served as extras. Fisk & his men leave. Susan arrives & expresses concern
that the dinner didn't go as Alan had planned. He says he had a momentary
lack of control, but didn't reveal anything. She notes that the limo is
back in Springfield, so he tells her to go ahead with the plan. She calls
the police dept. & in a bad British accent reports seeing some suspicious
activity around the Spaulding estate--a man & woman who looked like they
were breaking in.

HOUSE O'MYSTERY: As they hurry through the house, Rog & Holly pass
through the study, where Rog notices that the safe is wide open. It
obviously was not that way before, so he realizes they're being set up in
some way. He tells Holly to lock the door & go upstairs to wipe off all
their fingerprints while he does the same downstairs. Holly can't believe
what's going on & goes to check out what's in the safe. She finds a photo
of Alex & Roger in happier days. "Since when has this become one of
Alexandra's prized possessions?" she asks rhetorically.

Meanwhile, the Spauldings enter through the front door, all looking
rather drained. Donna pats Alex on the shoulder & reassures her that
everything is fine now that she's home. (This was actually rather sweet.
Alex really seemed to appreciate Donna's effort of comfort.)

BEACH: Bill & Michelle are sitting now. He puts his arm around her & they
start about school starting. They're not in the same homeroom & she
wonders if she should try to get it changed. Bill says she shouldn't,
since she'll probably want to meet new guys, which could be hard if they
think she already has a boyfriend. "You could have any guy you want," he
tells her. She figures this means he wants to meet other girls. "No, I
already met the best one," he protests. She feels the same way about him.
She leans in for another kiss, but Bill doesn't seem to notice. They
suddenly realize that it's already Michelle's curfew & worry what her dad
will say. Bill is sure he'll never be allowed to take her out again &
tries to come up with a good excuse: "We'll say someone tried to rob us
or something." On cue, AM stumbles upon them. They don't recognize him &
run away screaming. AM runs in the opposite direction. [I'm starting to
worry about young Bill Lewis. He seems to be developing a nasty habit of
lying to get out of any situation that might make him look bad. In
today's episode alone, he lied to Cutter, Ben & Michelle, then suggested
lying to Ed. And is it just me, or does this kid have a more than passing
physical resemblance to our own President Bill? All in all, I'd say it
doesn't say much for his character's character.]

HOUSE O'MYSTERY: In the living room, Alex dismisses the maids & Fletch
suggests drinks for all. Alex wants to go straight to bed & considers
some sleeping pills. Mindy suggests some milk instead, but this is
laughed down. Fletch sends Alex upstairs & promises to join her as soon
as he has picked up Ben from Bill's.

In the study, Holly wonders if Alex has also saved Roger's love letters.
He says he never sent any. She suggests he check out the safe form
himself: "There's probably a whole treasure trove of Roger
paraphernalia."

Back in the living room, the men worry about Alex & what will happen when
Alan decides to move back into the house. Mindy is less concerned. Ben
wanders in, much to the surprise of his dad, who thought he was still at
Bill's. "I'm never going over that creep's house again, & you can't make
me!" declares Ben.

Upstairs, Alex enters her room & looks shocked.

Downstairs, Ben relates the story of how Bill ditched him. He is
interrupted by the Alex's scream. Nick & Fletch run upstairs & Mindy
follows at a more leisurely pace. "Guess Alexandra must have found Mr.
Thorpe," comments Ben casually.

In the study, Rog tosses the contents on the safe to the ground as he
finds nothing of interest. Wait, there is one thing that catches his eye.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie & Cutter talk in her doorway. He is sure he heard a
thump. She suggests it may have just been a raccoon in someone's garbage.
He tells her to go back inside & keep looking at mugshots. After he
leaves, she closes the book in exasperation, without even glancing at it.
She then goes back to the door & heads outside.

BEACH: AM returns to his hiding place & falls to the ground coughing.
Down the beach, Tangie finds her offerings untouched.

HOUSE O'MYSTERY: The Spauldings, now informed of Ben's encounter, survey
Alex's room & wonder what Rog & Holly were doing there. Mindy & Alex
agree that it's not all that surprising, although Mindy doesn't think
Holly would wear Alex's nightgown. Fletch notes that Rog & Holly's car is
still outside & Ben says he saw them go downstairs but didn't actually
see them leave. Confusion reigns until Alex realizes that no one checked
the study. "The safe!" cries Alex as she runs downstairs.

Downstairs, Rog asks Holly to look at what he found--the agreement
between Gilly & the Spauldings re: 1/2 of WSPR--Roger's half. They
exchange horrified remarks, then Holly decides they should really get
out. Oops, too late! Alex & entourage enter, full of righteous indig-
nation. Rog is equally indignant. "What's the meaning of this?" he asks.
He waves the contract under Alex's nose as the screen fades to black.
