GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1997

                         LOVE ME TWO TIMES

Highlights:
* Phillip & Harley christen her new apartment & vow to remain just friends.
* Alan's threats fail to get Reva to help Annie get out of the hospital.
* Abby's memory starts to return & she fears she may have been raped.
* Jesse is cleared, but he & Michelle realize that they are hurting others.

APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY: Phillip & Harley arrive to check out the
apartment Jenna scouted for Harley. They enter #12 to find the landlady
vacuuming vigorously. Without letting herself be seen, Harley decides that
the place is perfect. Phillip thinks they should look around a little more.
Harley wants to try to convince the landlady to let her have a dog. Phillip
is doubtful. Will Harley try to tell the woman that Scout is working
undercover? Harley is confident & tells Phillip to keep quiet.

They walk in & Harley introduces herself to Mrs. Lutowski ("Call me Vi").
Phillip stands behind Harley and tries to control his smirking as Harley
butters up Vi & tells her how perfect the apartment is. She mentions her
recent separation & how she's trying to start over. Then she tells Vi that
she had a dog, who is adorable, but very quiet. He brings her so much joy,
which is something she needs in her life right now. She'd just about die if
she had to give him up, so she hopes Vi can find it in her heart to waive
the no-pets clause. "Fine," says Vi. Fine? Harley is floored. Vi says in
this case she has no problem making an exception, & shoots Phillip a broad
wink, which Harley would have to be blind to miss. Vi excuses herself,
leaving the vacuum behind.

Harley pounces on Phillip, accusing him of setting her up. Phillip says it
was worth it to see Harley's smile when she found out she could keep the
dog. "Does it look like I'm smiling now?" she asks grimly. She says Phillip
broke their deal to stay just friends.

PSYCH HOSPITAL: Alan enters the dayroom & angrily confronts Annie's
psychiatrist because Annie's discharge papers aren't ready. Alan had gotten
the director's assurance that Annie would be released today. The doctor
explains that Annie can't go home today because there's been a problem.

CEDARS HOSPITAL: At Abby's bedside, Reva comforts Abby, who is distraught
at having to undergo a test to see if she was sexually assaulted. Rick
tells Abby that since she can't remember what happened, they have to find
out. Michelle watches with concern from the back of the room. Reva promises
to stay with Abby every second. "God help the person who did this to you,"
says Rick, then shoots a glance at Michelle.

JAIL: A cop brings Jesse to a pay phone & hands him a quarter. Jesse asks
if he's heard anything about Abigail. Jesse heard that she was awake. "Too
bad for you," says the cop. It won't be long before she fingers the perp.
He hopes Jesse has a good lawyer. Jesse calls his friend Roy & asks for
Ski. "You find his sorry butt & tell him I need to talk to him." He's sure
that Roy &/or Ski had something to do with Abby's beating. He promises to
come after both of them for what they did.

CEDARS: Rick promises to stay with Abby too. He loves her & will take care
of her. Abby is very upset that she can't remember what happened to her.
Reva reminds Abby that she hit her head & explains that sometimes when bad
things happen, we shield ourselves by losing the memories. Abby tearfully
shouts that she wants to remember what happened NOW! Reva urges her to calm
down & let it come naturally. Abby tries to see the events in her mind's
eye. She remembers being worried about Michelle & going to Jesse's place to
look for her. She walked inside & then someone was behind her. She can't
remember who. She can see the bottom of his face. "Oh no, oh no!" she
cries. "It could have happened. He could have raped me!"

HARLEY'S NEW APARTMENT: Harley goes to the window for a breath of fresh air
while Phillip asks what the problem is. Harley accuses Phillip of paying
off the landlady. Phillip says no money changed hands. Harley notices the
brand-new, state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner & wonders where Vi got it.
Phillip thought it was the least he could do, since he had already gotten
her the dog before she found out about the apartment. He says it wasn't a
big deal. Harley says getting her a dog was fine; it was a nice thing to
do. But "in typical Spaulding fashion," he's gone way too far. Phillip
takes exception to being likened to his underhanded family. "I was trying
to be a good friend. So I spent a couple of bucks. Big deal. I thought it
would put a smile on your face. Most people in your place would just say
thank you & leave it at that."

Harley lines up bottles of cleaning fluid on the floor between herself &
Phillip. She points to one side of the line & calls that friendship. The
other side of the line is not friendship. "Now we're drawing lines on the
floor," comments Phillip. On the friendship side is Phillip buying a dog to
cheer Harley up. On the not-friendship side is Phillip solving her problems
with his checkbook. Phillip just doesn't understand what the big deal is.
When walks toward the line, Harley warns him to stay back. Phillip still
doesn't get it. Harley says he's being deliberately argumentative (Phillip:
"That's a stellar argument") & he doesn't listen to her when she talks
(Phillip: "In circles"). Harley has told Phillip how she feels & wishes he
would just say OK & back off. "Do you think that'll solve the problem?" he
asks. Harley thinks it would. Phillip says it won't, because Harley is the
problem. "You are scared to death."

PSYCH HOSPITAL: The doctor tells Alan that there was an incident the other
day when Reva visited Annie. Alan wants details. The doctor calls over
Barry, an orderly who witnessed it, to fill Alan in. Barry describes seeing
Annie push Reva over the couch. The doctor says Annie insists that she
didn't do it. Alan understands immediately what has happened & tries to
explain it to the doctor. "I hadn't thought of it that way," he admits, but
says neither he nor the director can do anything, because they already
called the judge & got him to extend the court-ordered commitment for
another 2 weeks. Alan is furious & tells the doctor to tell Annie that he
was here & he will be back later. The doctor doesn't want to get Annie's
hopes up. "Annie doesn't have any hopes," spits Alan. "All she has is me."

CEDARS: Abby cries that she can't remember any more. Then she closes her
eyes & sees things more clearly. "It wasn't Jesse," she says. Michelle
breathes a sigh of relief. Reva asks Abby to describe her attacker. Abby
says he was young, with long, wavy, dark hair and dark eyes. And they
looked at her like they wouldn't let her go. Rick asks if she remembers
anything else. She yells that she doesn't want to talk about it anymore.
Reva helps her to calm down. Abby asks when she has to have the test. Rick
says Dr. Sedwick will come down in a little while. A female police officer
will be there too, and might ask her some questions. Rick adds that there
could also be complications if Abby was raped. Abby knows that she is at
risk for STDs, infections & pregnancy. Reva sends Rick off to find out when
Dr. Sedwick will be down.

Abby blames herself for going to Point Lester in the first place. Reva
tells her that no matter what, this is not Abby's fault. "That scum had no
right to touch you." Abby wishes her mother were there. Reva promises that
they will call her. Abby cries some more & then gets hold of herself again.

Out in the hall, Michelle talks to Rick. She thinks it's good that Abby's
getting her memory back. Rick agrees. She adds that at least they know
Jesse didn't do it. Rick hardly thinks that makes everything all right.
Abby was attacked in Jesse's garage, which wouldn't have happened if
Michelle hadn't been sneaking around with Jesse in the first place.
Michelle doesn't want to get into this with him. She's going to the police
station to tell Jesse he'll be out soon. Rick says all of this happened
because Michelle brought Jesse & his world into their lives. Michelle is
sorry about what happened to Abby, but says Rick isn't being fair. Rick
begs Michelle not to see Jesse again. "I have to," she says, walking away.

Reva brings Abby some water & they discuss what's going to happen next.
They will take it one step at a time. Abby holds Reva's hand & tells her
how much she loves her hands. She remembers how Reva used to heal people in
Goshen with those hands. Reva wishes she could take Abby's pain away. Abby
knows she has to deal with this herself. Reva tells Abby that all her
friends are there for her.

Dr. Sedwick arrives & expresses her sorrow over what has happened to Abby.
She says they will do the test right away & get it over with. Abby sits in
the wheelchair, looking very young, sad & vulnerable. Reva whispers to Rick
that Abby wants to see her mom. Rick tells Reva that he got a call from the
summer camp asking Reva to come to the children's park. It sounded pretty
serious. Reva tells Abby she has to go see about her kids, but will be back
ASAP. Before they wheel Abby out of the room, Rick makes a sign to her
(first & fourth fingers plus thumb raised, palm outward -- anyone know what
this means?) and Abby smiles just a tiny bit. After they wheel her out, a
tear rolls down Rick's face.

JAIL: Michelle tells Jesse the good news about Abby's memory. The police
told her that as soon as they get Abby's statement, Jesse will be released.
Jesse asks how Abby is doing. Michelle explains about the test to see if
Abby was raped. Jesse asks what the guys who did it looked like. Michelle
repeats Abby's description. "You don't know him, right?" asks Michelle.
Jesse says he does. Michelle says it's still not Jesse's fault. The guy
broke into his place. "This has nothing to do with us," she insists. Jesse
isn't so sure.

PARK: Reva looks around for her kids, but doesn't see them anywhere. Alan
tells her that Marah & Shayne are safe across town. Reva is furious at him
for scaring her like that. "You've been living with Annie too long," she
decides. Alan says Annie is the reason for this little tete-a-tete. "Annie
snaps & you jump," Reva notes. Oh, and she also winds up in the psycho
ward. Alan tells her that it's two more weeks, thanks to Reva's stunt. Reva
is pretty proud of herself. Alan tells Reva to stop messing around with the
people he cares about, and says she's going to help him get Annie out. "Not
if my life depended on it," replies Reva.

"I wouldn't spit on Annie if she were on fire," says Reva. Alan takes her
arm & tries to get her to come with him. Reva shakes him off. Annie has
information about Reva's sister, but when Reva offered to help Annie get
out in exchange for that information, Annie said she'd rather rot in the
nuthouse. "I guess she got her wish," Reva concludes. Alan says Annie won't
stay there. Reva deduces that Alan heard what happened. "I lifted a chapter
right out of the Book of Annie. I fell & went boom!" Reva is surprised that
Alan doesn't see the humor in this. "I have done you a huge favor, Alan.
Annie is right where she belongs & I won't lift a finger to help her." Alan
asks what if the people Reva cares about depended on her decision. Maybe
now she'll reconsider.

HARLEY'S APARTEMENT: Harley laughs at the idea that she's scared of
something. She's not scared of anything. Phillip points to the line of
cleansers on the floor. "That was to make a point," says Harley. Phillip
says it's because she's going way out of the way to set the boundaries of
their relationship because they made love once & she's terrified that it's
going to happen again. "We didn't make love; we had sex," corrects Harley.
Oops, Phillip forgot. No emotional content allowed--another of Harley's
rules. "Whatever it takes," she says. Phillip says it doesn't take the
Mason-Dixon line across the floor. "Because I am not your lover. Right? So
why shouldn't I be your friend." Harley says she didn't say that.

Phillip asks Harley to think about what would have happened if he hadn't
intervened with Vi. Since he had gotten Harley the dog, he would have had
to take it back to the Bauers, where it would have gotten into Meta's
flower garden. "And instead of roast beef, Meta is serving me for dinner."
But it wouldn't matter, because I'm your friend & that's what friends do
for each other." Phillip hasn't had the kind of family that Harley has, but
he knows about friends & how they stick up for each other when they're
needed. That's all he was trying to do, and he wasn't trying to get
anything for it, except maybe a kick from making her happy. "Because that's
what friends do."

Harley admits that Phillip is absolutely right. He did a wonderful thing
for her. He knew she needed this new beginning. Now she can get her life
back on track & get her career started. He's a good friend. "Thank you,"
she says, and gives him a little peck on the cheek. "You're welcome," he
replies, and gives her a soft kiss on the lips. They look at each other &
Phillip starts in with that adorable half-smile of his. Harley meets his
eyes & they lean in for another kiss, and before you know it, they are
locked in an embrace, kissing each other with heart & soul.

JAIL: Jesse tells Michelle to open her eyes. "Us being together is hurting
people." Michelle doesn't want to hear this line of thought--it sounds just
like Rick. It's not their fault that Abby was attacked by a sick loser.
Jesse points out that it happened at his place. "So it's time to take off
your blinders because your brother is right. I brought this to your
doorstep." Michelle says it was just an accident. They happen. Jesse says
some accidents can be prevented. They were too busy pretending the world
was a bed of roses & they were the only 2 people who mattered. Michelle
still thinks they didn't do anything wrong. Jesse says it has to stop; it
just won't work. "I agree with my son," says Jack Blue as he arrives. "It's
time you listened to him."

Michelle says Jesse shouldn't be in jail. She tries to explain what
happened to Jack, who grows increasingly irate as he realizes that Rick
helped put Jesse in jail. Michelle says it was all a misunderstanding &
adds that she & Jesse were on their way to tell everyone that they were a
pair of people when this all came down. Jack derides Michelle's rosy view
that this will make everything all right. It's all her fault that Jesse got
put in jail the last time & this time, too. Jesse tells his dad to leave
Michelle alone. Jack asks what it will take to get through to Jesse. Jesse
tells him to get out & Jack leaves.

CEDARS: Rick prays, but he doesn't know what for. Michelle's in a mess & he
can't help her. He calls on Maureen for her guidance. He calls on his dad.
He wishes Ed would come back, because he needs his strength to get through
this. Margaret wheels Abby back into her room. Abby looks around morosely,
but doesn't say anything.

HARLEY'S PLACE: As she removes Phillip's tie, Harley moans that this was
supposed to be an "OTO" -- a one-time only thing. Phillip says he's
horrible at that. It'll have to be a TTO. "We really, really, really
shouldn't do this," says Harley, as she helps him out of his shirt. Phillip
picks her up & carries her to the couch, where he puts her down gently &
helps her off with her shirt, kissing her all the while.

PARK: Reva can't believe that Alan would dare to threaten her family. She
calls him a piece of garbage & informs him that he dragged her away from
Abby's bedside, after she was beaten & possibly raped, to help him with his
nutcase girlfriend. Alan says Annie has suffered enough at Reva's hands.
"Oh yeah? Put a bottle of booze in front of her & see what she does with
her own," challenges Reva. Alan tells Reva to go over to the hospital &
admit to staging the fall. Reva refuses. She doesn't threaten easily. What
more can Alan do to her after all she's been through. He promises her that
there will be hell to pay. Reva asks if that's supposed to scare her. Alan
warns her not to underestimate how much he cares for Annie or how far he'll
go for her. Reva knows she wished Alan & Annie on each other, but only
because she thought it was poetic justice. Now she sees it's just plain
frightening. "You have no idea, Reva," replies Alan.

CEDARS: Rick looks at Abby inquiringly. "I wasn't raped," she says,
somewhat defensively. Rick wipes the sweat off his forehead in relief. Dr.
Sedwick tells Abby that she'll give her the names of some support group
people who can help her. Abby thanks her & Margaret leaves. Rick looks at
Abby. "My sweet, sweet Abby," he says. Abby looks at him suspiciously.

PARK: Alan whips out his cell phone & says all Reva has to do is make one
simple call, and the war is off. "And all you have to do is tell me where
my sister is," she replies. "Alan, look at you. Look what she's done to
you. You know, I almost feel sorry for you." Alan asks if Reva is going to
make the call. She says she might. She'll call & ask if they have a room
with bunk beds, because that's where Alan belongs too. "Don't you dare
threaten me or my family," she says, and then walks away. "That was a big
mistake, Reva," says Alan to himself.

HARLEY'S PLACE: "You were right," says Harley, as she puts her shirt back
on, her back to Phillip. "TTO. This can never happen again." She doesn't
regret it. He was... magnificent. "So were you," replies Phillip. But they
can't keep risking their friendship this way, she adds. She warns him not
to say anything, because she knows where that leads. "And when you stop
talking, well, we're usually already there." She thinks they should just
savor the moment & then forget about it. "Harley, are you missing
anything?" asks Phillip, holding out Harley's bra. Harley takes it with a
little grin & gives Phillip another kiss. Phillip says he had an
unbelievably wonderful time & they kiss some more. "If you do it twice in
the same day, does that still count as a TTO?" he asks with his sexy smile.
"Don't start with me," warns Harley with a smile of her own. Phillip says
he's really bad at math. She says he shouldn't do this to their friendship.
He says they're good friends & will stay that way, "But you've got to take
that off to put this on anyway [referring to her shirt & her bra]." Harley
decides to just put it in her purse.

Phillip asks if they should tell Jenna how they christened the new office.
Harley says he'd better not say a word. She doesn't want to stop being
friends. Neither does he. "It means a lot to me, you really do." But once
you start sleeping with your friends, it all gets ruined & she doesn't want
that. So they have to promise themselves that this will never happen again.
Phillip brushes her hair back & promises. They leave the apartment with
Phillip straightening his jacket & carrying his tie.

JAIL: Jesse apologizes to Michelle about his father. Michelle says Jack was
telling the truth. She's only been thinking about herself. "Our being
together is no good. We hurt everybody we touch. We don't mean to, we just
do." She realizes they can't be together anymore. Jesse kisses her through
the bars. She says goodbye & leaves. Jesse touches his hand to his lips.

CEDARS: Rick sits on Abby's bedside & she yells at him. He just wants to
help her get through this. "Please, just let me be by myself," she asks.
Rick tells her she can get him anytime with the call button, then urges her
to get some rest. Alone, Abby cries quietly as the screen fades to black.
