GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 1997

NOWHERE TO RUN TO, BABY, NOWHERE TO HIDE

Directed by Gary Bowen

Highlights:
* Annie stays stuck in the county hosptial.
* Cassie learns the truth about Annie from Reva, but Alan's got her number.
* Marcus makes nice with Jesse, but angers Jesse's friends.
* Michelle & Dahlia talk about their plans & love lives.
* Abby confronts Michelle about breaking her promise to Rick.
* Buzz still can't figure out who sent him flowers.

DINER: Eleni sniffs Buzz's flowers, which are in a vase on the counter.
Buzz still thinks she sent them, but she insists she didn't. Buzz can't
figure out who sent them.

Marcus & Dahlia pat themselves on the back for how wonderful they are
together, in & out of the studio. Michelle walks in as they're kissing. She
asks Dahlia if she can take over tutoring Jesse starting tomorrow. Marcus
says Dahlia won't have the time, because she got signed by Sugar Hill.
Michelle is surprised, because Hill came to town to make Marcus a star.
Dahlia says he's going to do that too; signing her was just a fluke. Marcus
gets a weird look on his face.

LEWIS OIL: Cassie is trying to locate Annie on the phone, but with no luck.
Wanda walks in & tells Cassie she did a wonderful job on Billy's
spreadsheet. Josh agrees. Wanda feels like Cassie is already a member of
the family. Reva rushes in & excitedly announces that Annie is locked up in
the loony bin.

LOONY BIN: Annie thinks Alan is there to get her out of the hospital, but
Alan says they have to follow the rules, which state that she needs to be
evaluated first. Annie can't believe Alan cares about rules. He says they
have no choice & throwing a tantrum will only prolong her stay. The doctor
agrees. Annie explains that she is a nurse & would certainly know if
something was wrong with her. The doc says they need more than her word.
Annie suggests a bribe & asks Alan to write a check. The doc isn't
interested in money. He explains that she will need to meet with a number
of specialists in order to be evaluated properly & promises to keep Alan
posted on her progress, if any.

As the doc leaves, Annie shouts after him that there's nothing wrong with
her. Alan urges her to lower her voice & get hold of herself. He says she's
just digging herself a deeper hole. Annie begs him to bribe whoever he has
to, but just get her out. Alan warns her that this isn't a game. He's doing
all that he can, but she is going to have to wait this out.

Annie asks Alan why he won't help her. He says he spoke to the judge, but
it was no use. The phone records showed that a call to Dr. Powell was made
from Annie's phone at the Spaulding house. Annie says she didn't make the
call because she was with him all day. Alan says they have to keep that
quiet to avoid being linked to Cassie, if they want their plan to succeed.
All Annie wants is to get out. She is sure Reva set her up. Alan tells
Annie to forget about Reva.. Annie can't possibly do that. Reva ruined her
life, and Annie vows to ruin Reva's life, if it's the last thing she does.

LEWIS OIL: Josh says maybe Annie will get the help she needs at County
General. Reva thinks she's a hopeless case. Wanda offers a story about her
second cousin who married a snake charmer who got bit by a cobra, but this
doesn't seem particularly relevant, so she departs. Cassie listens in as
Reva mentions that the kids are still afraid that Annie will pop up and
frighten them again. Josh doesn't think Annie would violate a restraining
order. He heads for his office & Reva borrows Cassie's computer to record
some information about the search for her sister.

Cassie mentions that she couldn't help overhearing the discussion about
"this Annie person." Reva says the woman is pathological about hurting her
& Josh. She has to learn that she can't go around ruining other people's
lives. Cassie asks what Annie did. "Aside from setting me up for a phony
murder charge?" asks Reva. She says it's a long, ugly story, but the upshot
is that Annie did everything in her power to ruin Reva, no matter the cost
to anyone else. Cassie wonders if Reva's exaggerating just a little. Reva
says maybe Cassie hasn't been around long enough to know that some people
will do whatever they can to hurt someone else, and Annie is one of them.

DINER: Marcus says Sugar would have been an idiot not to sign Dahlia after
hearing her. He thinks it's so great how the music is bringing them even
closer together. Michelle is happy for them & thinks they're a lot luckier
than she & Jesse. Marcus excuses himself so the girls can have their girl-
talk. He adds that although he & Jesse did get off on the wrong foot, the
guy came through for him, so he's probably OK. Michelle wishes Marcus would
tell Jesse that, since he thinks everyone in Michelle's life hates him.
Marcus says maybe he will, then leaves the girls alone.

Michelle explains to Dahlia how Rick & Jack Blue have made it impossible
for she & Jesse to be together. She really needs to find someone who can
tutor Jesse for a few hours a week until they leave for college in the
fall. Dahlia asks Michelle to back up. What's this "we" stuff? Michelle
explains that Jesse is planning to move with her when she goes away.

JESSE'S PLACE: Jesse's friends show up & ask why he needs them so urgently.
Jesse needs to make a bunch of money fast. They think his "uptown girl" is
pregnant, but Jesse says he needs money to move. He's sick of his dad & the
judge being on his back all the time. He wants the guys to get him some
parts ASAP so he can get his motorcycle moving. The guys know a better way
for him to earn some real cash. They're making $1000 a night, but it ain't
exactly legal. They're "hitting moving targets," whatever that means.

The boys explain that they're into carjacking. They claim it's a victimless
crime, because the owners get new cars from insurance. Jesse doesn't want
to go to jail. The boys say they target old ladies and teens, who are so
scared by the whole experience that they can barely remember their names,
let alone anything about the people who stole their cars. Jesse decides to
take a pass. The boys insist it's the easiest way to get rich quick. Jesse
thinks about Michelle & their decision to go away together.

LEWIS OIL: Cassie has apparently managed to get Reva to spill the Annie
story. She can't believe the woman pretended to be Reva's sister to keep
her away from Josh. Reva adds that when that didn't work, she made it look
like Reva pushed her down a flight of stairs & killed her unborn baby, and
almost got away with it. Cassie thinks it's awful. Reva says Annie nearly
cost her everything she loved in the world. She thanks Cassie for
listening.

Josh comes out & asks if everything is all right. Reva explains that she
was just filling Cassie in on Annie's evil deeds. Cassie remembers Annie
telling her how Reva ruined her life, and her vow to destroy Reva in
return. The phone rings & brings her back to reality. She informs the
caller that Billy is out. After she hangs up, Josh asks if she's OK. She
says she's feeling a little sick to her stomach & asks if she can leave a
little early. Josh tells her to go ahead. Reva hopes Cassie feels better
soon. Now that they've found her, they don't want to lose her. Cassie takes
off.

COUNTY HOSPITAL: Alan warns Annie to calm down or she'll never get out of
the hospital. But Annie can't figure out how to convince the judge that she
didn't blow off Dr. Powell. Alan suggests she blame it on a migraine. Annie
doesn't think that's a great idea. The problem is, everyone has read about
her in the tabloids & now they can't wait to dissect her. And she feels an
incredible injustice has been done because this time, she didn't do
anything wrong. Alan says that's all that counts. He adds that they can't
keep her there for more than a week, unless she does something wrong. Annie
insists that she's just as sane as Alan. He says she has nothing to worry
about then. All she has to do is stay calm & behave. He promises to contact
her later. He's got an appointment with a lawyer who specializes in her
type of case. Annie gets all upset again. Alan calms her down. She tells
him how much she wants to be with him again. He wants to be with her too,
but she has to be patient. He leaves, over her protests.

DINER: Abby shows up. Michelle tries to warn her not to mention anything
about their discussion. Abby stops buy to say hi, then goes to the counter
to order pastries for a meeting at Cedars. Nola shows up & joins Abby at
the counter. She comments on the beautiful flowers & says she came by
because she wanted someone else to pour her a cup of coffee for once.

Dahlia asks Michelle what the problem is with Abby. Michelle explains that
Abby's relationship with Rick makes the subject of Jesse a difficult one.
She also explains the plans for moving to Missouri with Jesse. She'll live
in the dorm & he'll get an apartment. Dahlia wonders if he can afford that.
Michelle doesn't know. She admits that they haven't worked out all the
details, but what matters is that she & Jesse will be together & no one
will bother them. Dahlia asks if they're sleeping together. Michelle says
no. Dahlia says the subject will come up eventually. Michelle knows Jesse
would never do anything she wasn't comfortable with, and tells Dahlia to
relax, because she & Dahlia are still the 2 oldest virgins in town. Dahlia
starts looking around for Abby.

Michelle wonders why Dahlia asked about having sex. Dahlia says she was
just curious. Michelle wonders what's going on with Marcus, and Dahlia
admits that Michelle is now the sole oldest living virgin in town. Dahlia
says it was wonderful & she's sure that Michelle's time is coming soon.
Michelle thinks maybe she won't wait `til she gets to Missouri. Dahlia
wonders if Jesse is really the one for Michelle. Michelle is sure he is.

JESSE'S PLACE: Jesse's friends give him grief for not going in with them on
the carjacking. He doesn't care; he doesn't want to jeopardize what he has
with Michelle. There's a knock at the door, and Jesse opens it to Marcus.
Marcus thanks Jesse for saving his butt & helping him get his big shot. He
tells Jesse that he & Dahlia signed with the record company, and offers to
repay the favor anytime. Jesse's friends recognize Marcus & call him "Music
Man." They want him to play them a tune.

Jesse says his friends were just leaving. The boys think Jesse's getting
too good for them. Marcus starts to leave, but the boys don't want him to
go. They're itching for a fight, but Jesse kicks them out. They warn him
that he hasn't seen the end of them.

LEWIS OIL: Reva joins Josh in his office. She's discouraged because there
are no new leads in the search for her sister. Josh urges her to give it
some time. Josh thinks some good has got to come out of finding out who
Reva's sister was sold to. This reminds Reva that Harley & Jenna turned up
evidence that Alan did indeed help Annie lay the false trail. She worries
about what other evidence might have been destroyed or covered up. Josh
wants to get Alan alone & beat him to a pulp. Reva says that won't solve
anything. She agonizes over what her poor sister must have gone through,
first being sold & then getting lost in a system that should have helped
her. It breaks her heart. Josh promises that they will find Reva's sister,
and thinks there must be some way to find out what Alan knows.

HOTEL: Cassie storms into her room & says she won't do this anymore. She
pulls out her suitcase & some clothes from the closet. Then she sees the
picture that Tammy drew for her. Then there's a knock at the door. When she
opens it, Alan comes in. He wants to know why she tried to reach him &
Annie at his office. Because she called the special number he gave her, but
he didn't answer it. Alan asks what was so important that it couldn't wait.
Cassie says she's quitting & going back to Chicago.

DINER: Abby thinks the flowers are so pretty & asks Buzz who sent them.
Buzz doesn't know. Maybe it was Reva. Abby doesn't think so. Eleni says
maybe a customer has a crush on him. Buzz figures with his luck, it's a
stalker.

Abby looks toward Dahlia & Michelle. She can see what Michelle is saying.
Michelle is glad Dahlia is happy for her, even if no one else is. She knows
Dahlia can't help her out, & thinks she'll ask Bill's girlfriend, Lauren.
She starts to leave, but Abby stops her. She accuses Michelle of lying to
her when she promised not to see Jesse anymore. Michelle asks why Abby
thinks she was lying. Abby admits to reading her lips just now. Michelle
says it's rude to eavesdrop. Abby says it's worse to lie. Michelle says she
was just going to see Jesse to tell him that Dahlia can't tutor him. She
admits it's an excuse to see him, but he had to learn to read, or he'll be
thrown in jail. Abby thinks his probation officer could find a tutor.
Michelle says she got Jesse into this & feels a responsibility to get him
out. Abby thinks it's more important for Michelle to keep her promise to
her brother. She refuses to lie for Michelle. Michelle says Abby doesn't
have to lie; she just has to avoid mentioning that she saw Michelle. She
doesn't wait for an answer, and leaves to see Jesse.

HOTEL: Alan asks why Cassie is suddenly running. Are Josh & Reva on to her?
No, she says, they've taken her into their confidence. Alan doesn't
understand the problem. Cassie says she knows every pathetic, disgusting
thing he & Annie did to them, and also knows that Annie's in an asylum now.
They made her think Josh & Reva were the bad guys, when it was Alan & Annie
all along. Alan asks what difference it makes. Cassie says they're nice
people & she won't hurt them.

Alan grabs her & says she's not going anywhere. She's going to do the job
she agreed to do. He grabs Tammy's picture from her & comments on how
lovely it is. All Tammy wants is to be reunited with her mom. That's why
Cassie took the job. Cassie says she can get another job. She can go back
to stripping. Alan thinks it's highly unlikely that a judge will grant her
custody if she's stripping for a living. Poor Tammy will spend her life in
foster homes, just like her mom. He reminds Cassie of how much she hated
that life. Imagine how Tammy will hate her for that. And all he has to do
is make one phone call to guarantee that life for Tammy & ensure that
Cassie will never see her again. This is what he will do if Cassie dares
cross him. "Don't make me do this," whipers Cassie.

NUT HOUSE: A fairly normal-acting woman approaches Annie, who tries to wave
her off with a ping pong paddle. Even though this woman seems OK, Annie
remembers the woman who pretended to be a doctor. This woman says that was
Paula, and Paula did the same thing to her, diagnosing her as a multiple
personality. She sits down across from Annie & says she's in for
evaluation, just like Annie. Annie asks how long she's been there. Two
months, she answers. Annie is incredulous.

The woman explains that she & her husband are going through a nasty divorce
& custody battle. Since the husband has all the money, he was able to
convince a judge to put her away until she really goes insane. Annie
thought they could only keep a person for a week unless there was something
really wrong. The woman says that's what they tell everyone, but the
doctors are convinced that no one would be there in the first place if they
weren't nuts, so the problem is proving that you're sane. Annie thinks she
can't stay 2 days, let alone 2 months. The woman advises her to get used to
it, because there's no easy way out. Annie looks horrified.

JESSE'S PLACE: Marcus says he has to get going & is sorry if he caused any
problems with Jesse's friends. Jesse's not worried; he'll be moving soon
anyway, so he doesn't think he'll be seeing them, unless it's on American's
Most Wanted. Or Funniest Home Videos, adds Marcus. They share a laugh &
shake hands. They wish each other good luck & Marcus leaves. Out in the
alley, Jesse's buddies watch him. Then they see Michelle approach. They
decide to forget about Marcus, because Michelle will be more fun.

HOTEL: Alan threatens Cassie some more. She doesn't want to make an enemy
out of him; she can ask Reva what that's like. Alan leaves. With tears
running down her face, Cassie remembers saying goodbye to Tammy. She
unpacks her suitcase with a sigh.

ASYLUM: Annie's new friend says she needs to get back to the basket she's
weaving. She just thought if Annie knew the score, she'd be able to deal
with things better. Annie thanks her, but is sure she'll be out by
tomorrow. "Whatever you say," smiles her friend.

Annie wonders what's taking Alan so long to get back. The doctor arrives &
says Annie has a visitor. She's happy because she thinks it's Alan, but
SURPRISE! It's Reva, and she's in full gloat mode as the screen fades to
black.
