GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 1997

                               GRAB YOUR PARTNER!

Directed by Matthew Lagle

Highlights:
* Amanda keeps her eye on Alan.
* Annie reels in Cassie.
* Rick gets Blue in the face.
* Dahlia plans a special night for Marcus.
* Sugar Hill gets an unwanted visitor.
* Jenna & Harley take on Reva & Josh as their first clients.
* Billy returns to Lewis Oil.

CHICAGO HOTEL: Alan tries to track down Amanda by phone. When he has no
luck, he asks for Roger. There's a knock at the door & Alan calls out for
room service to come on in. "Sorry, I don't do turn-down," quips Amanda.
Alan hangs up & says he's been trying to reach her. Amanda asks where
"Florence Nightingale on acid" is & can't begin to imagine the trouble
she's gotten Alan into by now.

ELSEWHERE IN CHICAGO: Annie leads Cassie down the hallway of an apartment
building. Cassie wants to turn back because there's a restraining order
preventing her from going within 50 feet of her daughter. Annie tells
Cassie to trust her. Cassie is not so trusting & says Annie doesn't know
what it's like to worry that she might never see her daughter again. Annie
tenses up. Her plan is to win Cassie's confidence by letting her see Tammy,
in the hopes that this will convince Cassie to take the spying job at Lewis
Oil. [Yeah, I know; it doesn't work for me either.] Annie pulls out a wad
of money & says it will get them in the door. Cassie thinks it must be nice
to have the money to buy whatever & whoever you want. Annie says she knows
what it's like to lose a child, and that's something money can't buy back.
She wouldn't want anyone else to experience that kind of pain.

DINER, EXTERIOR: Josh & Reva approach the diner as a woman wearing a cameo
brooch checks the door & leaves because the diner is closed. Reva stares
after her & wonders if the woman could be her sister. That's what she
wonders whenever she sees a woman wearing a cameo. Josh promises that they
will find Reva's sister, no matter what it takes. Billy arrives & says he
can get them into the diner for some pie. He knocks & Buzz lets them in.

Billy tells J&R that his days as a fry cook are coming to an end & he is
now free to return to Lewis Oil, if Josh will have him. Josh is delighted.

BAUER HOUSE: Mr. Blue yells at Michelle to stay away from his son. Michelle
seems intimidated, but Rick is pissed. He asks Michelle if this guy is the
father of the kid she's tutoring. Yes, she says. Rick tells Mr. Blue to
calm down so they can discuss this rationally. Mr. Blue is not interested
in calming down.

Michelle interrupts & says if that's the way he feels, then it's over.
She'll end the tutoring. Rick is having none of this, not after Michelle
gave up her whole summer for this project. Mr. Blue doesn't want any Bauer
charity for his family. He warns Rick to keep Michelle away from his son or
they will both live to regret it.

DINER: Reva is thrilled for Billy. Josh says the Lewises are on an upswing.
Billy expresses some concern about picking up on things again, but Josh
laughs this off, saying Billy was born to the business. He'll be glad to
have help with the business so he can spend more time helping Reva find her
sister.

DINER: Jenna & Harley bicker over their detective agency over coffee.
Harley wants Jenna to handle the office work while she does the
investigating. Jenna insists that she has the talents & experience to do
investigative work too, even if it does come from the wrong side of the
law. She also thinks she'll be good at going after business. Harley just
wants to do her job well. She's dubious that she & Jenna will be able to
run a business together when they can't agree on anything. And they have no
start-up money. Jenna tells her to have some faith. She really thinks
they'll make a good team. She has an idea for getting them some free
publicity, and she thinks they should take out an ad in the Journal.

In the kitchen, Reva catches up with the ecstatically happy Buzz, who fills
her in on the plans for the new detective agency. He thinks it will work
out really great if Harley & Jenna don't end up killing each other.

CHICAGO HOTEL: Alan tells Amanda that his life is none of her business. She
begs to differ, because what he does affects the company. Alan says he's in
town to close a deal for Spaulding. Amanda wants to talk about Annie. Alan
says Annie is no concern of Amanda's. Once again, Amanda begs to differ,
since Annie's court-appointed shrink showed up at the mansion, forcing
Amanda & Rog to cover for Annie. Amanda asks for one good reason why she
shouldn't turn Annie in.

CHICAGO APARTMENT BUILDING: Annie asks Cassie to let her handle things.
Cassie steps back as Annie knocks on a door. Annie speaks to Mrs. Gallagher
through the crack in the chained door. When Mrs. Gallagher sees Cassie in
the hall, she quickly comes outside & closes the door behind her. She
maintains that she has a responsibility to Tammy & Family Services, and she
won't let Cassie see her daughter. Cassie gets angry. Annie tries to smooth
things over. She just wants a minute of Mrs. Gallagher's time, for Tammy's
sake.

Annie explains how badly Cassie misses her daughter. Can't she find it in
her heart to let a mother spend some time with her daughter? Mrs. Gallagher
is having no truck with this. Annie asks whether Tammy ever asks for her
mommy. Mrs. Gallagher says all the kids ask for their mothers at first.
Annie says they're just asking for one little visit, and Mrs. Gallagher can
stay in the room. Annie understands how difficult it is to raise a child
these days, especially on the money the state pays. She offers some cash to
Mrs. Gallagher, who is offended that Annie would try to buy her. Annie says
she is just trying to help Tammy out. She places the money in Mrs.
Gallagher's hand. She says she'll go get Tammy. Cassie follows her into the
apartment. Annie is sure her plan is working.

TOWERS CLUB: Dahlia and Sugar Hill watch & listen as Marcus plays with the
band. At the end of the song, Dahlia claps & says Marcus is smoking. Marcus
asks Sugar if he was acceptable. Indeed, says Sugar, but he expects even
better tomorrow when he plays for the money men.

Sugar takes a call on his cell phone from someone he's been trying to reach
all night. He tells the caller that he will be a very unhappy man if Drew
Jacobs shows up tonight. He can't have the distraction.

BAUER HOUSE: Rick gives Mr. Blue hell for coming into his house & going off
for no apparent reason. What kind of man would interfere with his son's
learning how to read? Mr. Blue says he'd rather his son never be able to
read than to be taught by Michelle. Rick is completely flabbergasted. Jesse
shows up & starts screaming at his dad. Rick finally gets an inkling of
what's going on.

Rick takes Michelle aside while Jesse yells at his dad in the background.
Rick asks whether Jesse is the guy Michelle has been tutoring. Yes, she
says. Rick asks how he could lie to her like this. Michelle says she was in
the process of telling him when this all blew up. Rick thinks she was
trying to pull a number on him. Does she think he's an idiot? Michelle
keeps arguing with him, but Rick goes into full pRick mode & starts
agreeing with Mr. Blue that these two kids don't belong together. When
Michelle continues to protest, Rick seethes, "I don't want to hear another
word out of your lying mouth!" This sends Jesse into protective mode. He
thinks Rick is the one who needs to watch his mouth. "Who the hell do you
think you are?" asks Rick. "Somebody who respects your sister a hell of a
lot more than you do," counters Jesse. He warns Rick to back off or go
through him. Michelle looks miserable.

CHICAGO HOTEL: Amanda says she's on Alan's side. Alan is dubious. Amanda
says she's only looking out for Alan's best interests. Alan finds this
funny. Amanda says Alan could be charged with aiding & abetting a criminal..
Alan says Annie was never charged with a crime. Amanda says she's guilty as
hell. What is Alan doing with her in Chicago anyway? Alan says they're
sharing a hotel room--it shouldn't be too hard to figure out, especially
for someone who used to be in Amanda's former line of work. Amanda hopes
Alan isn't paying for it, `cause Annie isn't worth bus fare. Alan grabs
Amanda's arm & warns her not to talk that way about Annie. "Annie Dutton is
trouble," warns Amanda. She starts to say that he heard it from her first,
but realizes that he's probably heard it before. She turns & exits.

GALLAGHER APARTMENT: Annie & Cassie wait silently. Finally, Mrs. Gallagher
ushers out a little blonde munchkin, who gleefully shouts "Mommy!" as she
runs into Cassie's arms. Cassie tells Tammy how much she's missed her.
She's proud of what a good girl Tammy has been with Mrs. Gallagher. Tammy
says she's missed Cassie too. Cassie reminds Tammy of a song they used to
sing together.

As they sing, tears roll down Annie's face. She tells Mrs. Gallagher that
they both did the right thing, because no one should be allowed to break up
a family.

DINER: Reva & Josh have joined Harley & Jenna in their booth, & they're
discussing Reva's search for her sister & how difficult Annie has made it
for them to sort out fact from fiction. Jenna finds it hard to believe that
Annie could be so awful. Reva asks if they think they can help.
"Absolutely," says Jenna. Harley is not so sure. She doesn't want to give
them false hope. Jenna reminds Reva how she was already able to help by
getting the adoption records. Harley doesn't want to hear about these less-
than-legal doings. She says they will use legal measures only to search for
Reva's sister. She doesn't want to promise them success, though, especially
since Reva & Josh are not just clients, but friends. Reva says because they
are friends, they trust Harley & Jenna. Josh echoes her sentiments & adds
that no expense will be spared.

Jenna says she'll draw up a contract. Harley gets down to business. She
wants to hear every detail of Reva's search, no matter how insignificant it
may seem. They start with the cameo.

TOWERS CLUB: Sugar Hill is really pleased with the way Marcus has come
through. He shouldn't worry, but just go with the flow. Marcus asks for a
little information on what is going to happen tomorrow night. It will make
him a lot less nervous. Sugar says the suits will arrive early to talk
business, but Marcus doesn't have to worry about that. He goes on at 9 p.m.
& will meet them after he plays.

Dahlia joins Marcus & Sugar gets another call on his cell phone. Dahlia
thinks it's good that Sugar now loves Marcus's music. Marcus isn't quite so
enthusiastic, but agrees that things are better now that Sugar doesn't
think he stinks. Dahlia hopes Marcus isn't going to be one of those stars
who's always fishing for compliments. Still, she thinks he's going to blow
away the record company execs. Her confidence means a lot to Marcus.

Dahlia thinks tomorrow is going to be perfect. So perfect that she has come
up with an idea. After tomorrow's wildly successful performance, she wants
to spend the *whole* night with him. It's time; she's ready. She's booked
them a suite at the Towers just for this Special Occasion. Marcus asks if
she's sure. Yes, she is. She wants to celebrate his most important night in
the most important way. She kisses him & smiles. She's so thankful that
they have each other. Marcus hugs her.

BAUER HOUSE: Rick doesn't want Jesse telling him how to talk to Michelle.
Jesse says Michelle thinks the world of Rick; she can't stop talking about
how wonderful he is. But when she said she wanted to tell Rick about them,
Jesse didn't think it was a good idea, and Rick just proved him right. Rick
warns Jesse to back off. Jesse says Michelle is special & deserves a lot
better than the way Rick treats her.

Mr. Blue grabs Jesse by the back of his jacket & pulls him back from Rick.
He says Jesse deserves better than the Bauers & this is all probably part
of some kind of setup. Jesse says it's over & they should get going. Mr.
Blue says it will never be over--they lost everything because of the
Bauers. Rick asks what Mr. Blue's problem is with them. Blue yells that
they're related to "that drunken butcher who killed my wife!"

Mr. Blue & Jesse start to leave, but Rick stops them. He remembers Jack
Blue now, as "that crazy eight that tried to ruin my father's career & damn
near ruined his life." Jack says it was his life that was ruined. Rick
remembers everything that happened: Jack's wife died in the ER & he tried
to sue everyone who touched her. Jack insists that Ed killed his wife. He
dares Rick to look into Jesse's eyes & tell him any different. Rick looks
him square on & says that's not how it was. His mother died, that's all.
Doctor's can't save everyone. Jack starts yelling at Rick again, & Jesse
hustles him out the door. Michelle wants to go with Jesse, but he tells her
to stay back because he has to deal with his dad. Jack continues yelling at
Rick as Jesse drags him off. Michelle closes the door after them.

Rick looks at Michelle. "Well, make my night perfect," he says. "Tell me
you slept with him." Michelle stares at him, wide-eyed & angry.

GALLAGHER APARTMENT: Mrs. Gallagher takes Tammy's hand & says it's time to
go. Cassie wants some more time, but Annie says they mustn't take advantage
of Mrs. Gallagher's generosity. Tammy doesn't want to go, but Cassie tells
her it's late & time to go to bed. She tells her to be good & to remember
that her mom loves her. Tammy mouths "I love you" as she goes with Mrs.
Gallagher. Cassie rushes out of the apartment.

When Mrs. Gallagher returns, gives the money back to Annie, saying she
doesn't want it. She shows Annie the door & tells her not to try this
again, or she'll report them. She closes the door.

Annie apologizes to Cassie. Cassie's not sorry, because at least she got to
see Tammy. Annie says it proves that there are ways to beat the system. But
Cassie knows she won't see Tammy again unless she can convince Social
Services that Tammy will be better off with her, and that will take a lot
of money. Annie says she would have the money if she took the job at Lewis.
Cassie is ticked. They're not out the door 5 seconds & already Annie is
working her own agenda. Maybe so, but Annie argues that this respectable
job is just what Cassie needs. Stripping isn't going to go over too well
with a judge. Cassie says she'll think about it. Annie says they need an
answer tonight. Cassie asks why they want her. Annie says it's fate. She &
Alan showed up in the wrong neighborhood at the right time. She thinks it's
meant to be.

CHICAGO PAY PHONE: Amanda tells Roger he was right about Alan & Annie being
up to something. She doesn't know what it is, but she does know Alan can't
be trusted. She wants Annie out of the house & says it's time to make a
move. Roger has an idea that she likes. She says she's on her way to the
airport & asks him to wait up for her.

TOWERS CLUB: Sugar Hill says goodbye to the boys in the band & gets a drink
from the bartender. A young woman in a short, strapless blue dress and
long, straight, golden-brown hair shows up. "Miss me?" she asks Sugar. He
says he told her not to follow him. She kisses him on his cheek. Sugar is
not a happy camper.

Marcus can't believe Dahlia booked them a hotel room. Dahlia says she's
never been more sure of anything in her life. Marcus wants her to be sure,
because it's a big deal. She knows that, and that's why she waited for just
the right time. Marcus doesn't want her to feel like she's being pressured.
Dahlia says he's kept her waiting for so long, she feels like the world's
oldest living virgin. "Shh!" says Marcus. Dahlia laughs & says she's ready.
Marcus just wants her to be sure. He's wanted her since the day he met her,
but they agreed to wait. She insists that she's really ready. She wants to
share everything with him. Marcus says he really loves her, but he can't
believe she's spending so much money. She doesn't care. It's going to be
perfect, because it's going to be with him.

BAUER HOUSE: Rick can't believe the risks Michelle is taking with a guy
like Jesse. Hasn't she thought about HIV, herpes, etc.? Michelle tells him
to shut up. Rick thinks she can't handle the truth. She says she'll give
him the truth, but he won't like it. "If it was up to me, I would have
slept with him," she says. "I wanted it! You can't imagine how much!" Rick
doesn't want to hear this, but Michelle keeps on. "I'm the one who wanted
it, me, your innocent little sister, but it was Jesse who stopped. Jesse
was the one. It was him, not me, who said it wasn't right!" She runs out of
the room as Rick calls after her to stop. "Shut up, Rick!" she yells back
at him. Rick sighs.

DINER: Harley & Jenna discuss the case alone. Harley says Reva has no idea
what she's in for. Even if they find her sister, who knows what kind of a
person she is? Reva may not like what she finds. Jenna says that's not
their problem. Their job is just to find her.

Billy thanks Josh for welcoming him back to Lewis Oil. Josh has faith in
his big brother. Billy gives Josh a big hug. He's going to start in the
morning. Reva knows he'll do fine. Billy leaves & Reva asks Josh if he
really thinks she'll find her sister. Josh has a good feeling about it. He
thinks their family will be complete by Christmas.

CHICAGO HOTEL: Alan paces & waits for Annie. She returns with a triumphant
smile. In response to his query about how things went, she introduces their
new partner. Cassie enters the room & closes the door behind her. "What
now?" she asks. Annie says she should go home & get a good night's sleep &
come back in the AM for a strategy meeting. Cassie says she'll be there,
and leaves.

"Cassie Layne is coming to Springfield & poor Reva won't know what hit
her," declares Annie. She laughs maniacally as the screen fades to black.
