GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS
* Gabby shows & tells.
* AM lets it be known he's OK.
* Alan & Cutter check up on Tangie.
* Nadine's new look sends Buzz off the deep end.
* Matt spots some talent in Lucy

BOARDINGHOUSE: David tells Gabriella that she needs to stick around so he
can help her & Dylan. She promises to stick around if he'll hide her &
feed her. She hasn't eaten in 2 days. David says he'll take care of her,
but she can't hide out in his room. He suggests the basement. The sound
of Lucy's voice sends them scurrying into the stairwell. Matt enters,
with Lucy on his heels. He's holding a batch of her photos hostage.

BAUER HOUSE: Eve returns from a "most excellent" day in surgery to find
Ed attempting to put together cartons for her impending move.

ALAN'S LAIR: Alan reads about the attack on Tangie in the newspaper.
Susan asks if he's worried about her. Although she "means little" to him
now that "she no longer serves a purpose" in his plan, when Susan leaves,
he calls Cedars & asks for her status. He learns that she's been released
& smiles.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie sleeps & dreams. A candle... a man's hand taking her
hand & kissing it, then stroking her hair. (The man is AM in his hooded
shirt, but she doesn't see his face.) She wakes to find herself alone,
then looks out the front door. No one is there and she closes the door.
Alan -Michael lurches up & places the book of poetry on the porch
railing. He sighs from the exertion. His hands are still bloody.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy threatens to call the cops if Matt doesn't return her
photos. He turns them over & critiques her work: the photos of people are
very good, but the rest seem like something for a layout on how the other
half lives (yachts, country homes, etc.). (David & Gabriella are still
hiding in the stairwell.) Matt wonders if Lucy's hooked on the high life,
so she retorts that he's hooked on drifting. He says it's a time-honored
American tradition for men of vision, from Thoreau to Keroouac. She
suggests that Lucy give it a try. "Been there; done that," she replies,
opining that it's a dead end. She leaves the house & Matt exits the
kitchen.

David checks that the coast is clear, then takes Gabriella down into the
cellar.

DINER: Buzz tries fruitlessly to improve his appearance for a photo shoot
while Frank tells him to give it up. Buzz wants to do it for Nadine.
Nadine arrives, all made over by the beauty shop. Her hair is up and back
in an elaborate knot & she wears a black pantsuit & matching headband.
[She happens to look extremely elegant & very Ivory-girlish.] Carroll
opines that she looks like a movie star. Of course, she looked like one
before, but now she looks like a *different* movie star. :-) Buzz goes
into a hysterical fit of laughing, which sends Nadine off to the ladies'
room in tears.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie answers the door to Cutter, who berates her gently for
not asking who was at the door {"I must be hard of hearing...") He shows
her the book & asks if it's the one she lost. She says yes & reaches for
it, but Cutter holds on to it as evidence. He says he found it right
outside her door. She figures her good Samaritan may have brought it
back, but Cutter doesn't subscribe to her "2 men on the beach" theory. He
thinks the attacker may be trying to lure her in. She asks if he's really
going to impound her book & he gives it back.

Alan arrives in time to hear them rehash the events on the beach &
Cutter's disbelief of Tangie's sense of what happened. She thinks he's
"overinvested" in the case & doesn't want so much attention. Cutter takes
offense & leaves. Tangie goes back to bed & opens the book. She notices a
spot of fresh blood on one of the pages.

BOARDINGHOUSE: David leads Gabriella into the cellar & tells her she'll
be safe. He finds a mattress for her. Gabby is apprehensive & worries
about mice. David says she's welcome to check into the Regency. She'd
rather sleep on the floor in his room, but David thinks Kat might find
that problematic. He doesn't want her to hear any rumors that might keep
her from returning from Europe. Gabby agrees to stay in the cellar. David
goes off in search of Dylan & food.

BAUER HOUSE: Eve suggests they begin moving with something unthreatening,
like the kitchen. She opens the fridge to try to clear some space for her
bottled water & is amazed by the quantity of food therein (3 kinds of
Dijon mustard, capers...). "A well-stocked refrigerator makes me feel
secure," asserts Ed. Eve is used to no more than some nail polish, a
bottle of champagne & some moldy cheese. She tries the freezer instead.
She pulls out a foil-wrapped, zip-locked package & asks Ed to identify
it. He's clueless ("a frozen something") so she opens it. Oops. It's
cake. Specifically, Ed & Maureen's wedding cake, which they were planning
to eat on their 25th anniversary. Eve offers to return it to the freezer,
but Ed says it would be pointless & trashes it, although he doesn't look
happy about it. Eve suggests he save the cake & eat it with Michelle the
night before she gets married, when she'll likely be missing her mom a
lot. "Oh man, that's why I love you," replies Ed. He thinks by that time,
Michelle won't miss Mo so much, thanks to Eve. BTW, it turns out
Michelles' at her friend Katie's for the night. Ed decides to put the
cake back in the freezer & forget about it. They grab the boxes & head
for Eve's place.

Alan-Michael slips in & finds a medical bag conveniently left on the
counter. Painfully, he opens it & extracts some supplies. Placing a towel
in his mouth to gag his cries of pain, he turns on the faucet & begins
washing his wounds. Over the sound of his muffled groans, Tangie reads
her poetry...

BOATHOUSE/BEACH: "The rain comes down & hushes the town, and where is the
voice that I heard crying?..." Outside, Alan sits on the beach. A hand
reaches down & grabs his shoulder. "Who are you?" demands Cutter.

Alan makes Cutter ID himself, then identifies himself as Ron Templeton,
although he has no ID on him. He was strolling & decided to take a rest.
Cutter tells him about the recent attack. "Ron" doubts that the
perpetrator would return to the scene of the crime. Nevertheless, Cutter
asks him if he was on the beach last night. Ron says he hasn't been there
in years. He speaks of his youth in Springfield, but says he hasn't lived
there for a while. He says he's in importing. He takes the conversation
off on a tangent by talking about the past & asking if things have
changed. Cutter admits that he's fairly new in town. Ron asks how the
victim is doing; Cutter says she's doing fine. Ron inquires about the
owners of the land--still the Bauers? Cutter says yes, but the Lewises
also own some land in the area. He offers Ron a ride back to town, but
Ron declines. Cutter departs.

BOARDINGHOUSE: David fixes some food while Lucy hangs out. Matt enters &
starts fixing the wobbly table. Lucy volunteers that she took the yacht &
house photos for her boss, for insurance purposes. Matt feels like a
fool; he thought they were about a young woman yearning for money &
power. "What I'm yearning for is for you to get out of my face," replies
Miss Lucy. Matt counters by noting that one of her photos was pretty
interesting. She says it was the last one on the roll. He asks to see it
again & says the lighting & composition is great. He goes through some
others & has something nice to say about each one. He asks what led her
to take them. She says they remind her of growing up. Matt offers the
photos to David, but he says he's in a hurry to watch a program on TV.
Lucy figures David must be really hungry based on the snack he's put
together. Matt finds another pic he likes & David quickly slips
downstairs. Matt admires a photo showing a hitchhiker with both thumbs
out--one in each direction. Says it's the story of his life. Lucy can
empathize ("Been there too. Kind of lonely.") Matt agrees.

DINER: Buzz tries to coax Nadine from the bathroom, but she's staying
put. He tries to explain himself to the diner patrons by saying she
changed her appearance to get a reaction, but can't take the reaction now
that she got it. Carroll volunteers that some people are more sensitive
than others & you have to be careful with their feelings. Buzz decides
the customer is *not* always right. Buzz knows Deenie is trying to make
some kind of point. Frank says it's obvious she's trying to please Buzz
by making herself into what she thinks he wants. Buzz says he liked her
find the way she was, so Frank draws him a picture--Nadine was trying to
emulate Jenna. "Your father's a numskull," Buzz decides.

BOARDINGHOUSE: David brings Gabby some food. She worries about being
discovered & David advises her to say she's a friend of his. She digs
into the food & says it's the best sandwich she ever tasted. David says
PI Frank is on his way over. Gabby tries to make a break for it, but
David stops her. He says she'll have to trust him; she thinks he's
trusting that she's hungry enough to be stupid. David promises to try &
keep her safe as long as she tells what she knows about the hijacking.
She makes him promise "no cops."

Frank arrives & meets Gabby. He asks the right questions & gets her to
open up a bit. Her mom is dead & her dad's no good. She's been on her
own, on the road, since she was old enough to get away. On the night of
the hijacking, she had bedded down in the Lewis Construction lumber yard.
She saw 3 or 4 hijackers wearing ski masks. They had guns. She ran away &
could hear the truck following her down the road. Then it stopped. She
hid in the bushes. "They had guns! What do I do if they find me?"

BAUER HOUSE: AM hears Ed & Eve on their way back & quickly gets out of
the kitchen with his freshly bandaged hands. He hears E&E talking about
him; Eve wonders if Ed ever found AM for Jenna. Ed thinks its best if AM
stays away of the Spaulding side of his family. He wishes AM would talk
to him more about his problems. Eve suggests inviting the whole family
over for dinner at Christmas, including Alan. Ed doesn't want Alan
anywhere near his family.

BEACH: Tangie leaves some provisions (looks like food & a first-aid kit)
on a handy rock with a note: "I know what you did for me & that you're
hurt, but why did you run away? You didn't let me thank you. Are you
running from something or someone? I've told no one that I think you're
out here, but whatever you need, leave a note or a sign somewhere &
you'll have it. I think you saved my life. If I can do the same for you,
I will."

BOATHOUSE: Cutter catches Tangie as she returns to the house. He is
worried because of the guy he found on the beach. He describes "Ron," but
Tangie says he doesn't sound familiar.

BAUER HOUSE: From Michelle's room, AM calls his uncle. He uses the
pretext of forgetting to cancel a tennis date. He says he's out of town
trying to find backers for the lotion business. Ed says Jenna is looking
for AM re: the lawsuit; AM says she'll have to wait at least a couple
more weeks. Ed asks for a number where he can reach him, so Michelle can
call him. AM says it's better if he doesn't tell Ed where he is. He
appreciates his uncle's concern, but has to keep his problem to himself.
He promises he'll be fine & says he'll be back soon, then hangs up. He
begins clearing Michelle's stuff off the bed.

DINER: Buzz barges into the ladies' room & tells everyone to clear out.
He finds Nadine locked in a stall. [We get an interesting overhead shot
of the rest room; it has at least three stalls!] Buzz stands on the
toilet in the next stall & pokes his head over. "How dare you think that
I want you to be someone else! Don't ever think that you have to be
anything but your own special, wonderful, extraordinary self." Nadine
cries that she's none of those things. Buzz crawls under the stall
divider ("Thank God this isn't the men's room :-) ) to get face-to-face
with Deenie. He didn't understand why she would try to look like someone
else; it was so ludicrous that he laughed. But he was laughing at the
idea, not at her. He says the way she looks has always been perfect &
enumerates the features that he loves. "It gets to me the same way it did
when I first saw you outside Benny's pool room when you were 15. So
please, don't ever try to be somebody else. There's not another you.
You're one of a kind." Nadine realizes that Buzz really likes her the way
she is.

BEACH: AM finds Tangie's little gift & reads the note with a smile.

BOATHOUSE: Tangie reads some more apropos poetry. "The scar of this
encounter like a sword will lie between me and my troubled lord." There's
a knock at the door. Tangie doggedly asks, "Who's there?" (obviously
expecting Cutter again) but it's Alan. He asks to come in.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Matt says he never gets lonely on the road, but
understands how Lucy might, being an insecure young woman. Lucy takes
this as a sexist remark, but Matt says it's an ageist remark--young
people are insecure. Lucy guesses that Matt prefers "super-confident
older women" and that he was tearing up her room looking for a keepsake
from one of them. She departs in a snit. Matt supposes Lucy is right--
losing the keychain really shook him up.

In the cellar, Gabby remembers a man without a mask who jumped off the
truck & ran away. It was dark, but she could tell he had dark hair, not
long. He dropped something in the road & she picked it up, which was when
she was spotted. She holds out Matt's keychain. "You find the guy that
belongs to this & you got yourself one of the hijackers."
