Guiding Light Update for Tuesday August 23, 1994

=============================================================================

(Note: My cable was acting strangely today, all fuzzy and crackly, so I was
unable to make out a lot of subtle nuances in today's program. I also missed
some dialogue, one case in particular must be resolved, for me, if for no
one else. Help!)

Opening Shot:

	Holly and Roger:

Holly is asleep in her bed. Roger is in a chair watching her sleep. Holly
awakens and sees him sitting there. She is startled, and then asks him what
he is doing there. He explains that he wants to tell her about last night.
She is quite unwilling to listen to another round of lies. She looks very
certain of her lack of hope. She tells him he made his choice and though
she is not happy with it, she can live with it. Roger gives her Ross's
Alan Spaulding file and says he hasn't looked at it and he
neverwants to see it again.

Jenna and Alan (at Jenna's flat):

Jenna has a videotape in her hand. Alan asks her what it is, and she
ducks the question. He tells her that their deal is off, that he doesn't think
she has what it takes to do the job. She swears (on her child, no less!) that
she will do anything to win back Spaulding. Alan simply says "It's too late."

	Buzz (at the Diner)

Buzz walks in (I gather he is opening) and wanders around. He sees David
and the mystery woman (whose name I have not caught if she has given one; based
on her clothing I tend to think of her as Skull Cap Woman) sleeping in a booth.
They wake with a start and she runs out of the diner. David tries to catch her
but Buzz grabs hold of him, jumping to some erroneous conclusions ("Kat's
in Europe, the girl is cute") and then, as always, dismisses David's life with
a passing of his hand and starts asking for David's help in financial matters
with respect to the semi-finals and beyond of Soul Mates.
Buzz waxes rhapsodic about how if he and Nadine win he
will be free and clear of the debt that hangs around his neck "like a sack of
cement". Naturally, he has his back turned while he is saying this and Nadine
has walked in, listening, and looking stricken. She asks, "What would you
do if you were free and clear, Buzz?"

	Tangie and Blake (at Tangies)

Blake is concerned about Tangie who is waking and feeling her head. Blake
asks how she is, and then they debate what happened to Tangie. Blake is trying
to figure out who it was, and Tangie explains that she thinks the person who
brought her to her home is not the same person as the one who attacked her. She
thinks the other person was trying to help. Blake is incredulous. She says
"Oh come on Tangie, the guy is a lunatic."

Meanwhile, Alan-Michael is outside (wearing some indecipherable, for
me, hooded item), and listens as Cutter approaches giving orders to some
minor cop about Tangies' case. He enters the house, and he and Tangie rattle
off some not-so-pleasant banter (Cutter-"you don't look to good", Tangie-"
At least I look better than you"). Tangie tries to tell Cutter about her
rescuer: "I remembered something. I was carried home. But not by the same man
who attaked me." (Actually that is paraphrasing. Sorry.) Cutter doesn't
believe her either. He says she is too trusting and "that's how you got into
this mess". Tangie balks (and IMO rightly) indignantly asks "Are you blaming
me?" Cutter says "no", but then goes on to blame her. You shouldn't be walking
late at night, things you say might be taken the wrong way, yadda yadda yadda,
somebody smack that jerk please.

	Alan and Jenna:

Jenna wants to know why Alan says it's too late. Alan tells her he has
changed his plans (again?!). That he thought about using Roger, and his greed
to get Spaulding by leading him around with a carrot on a stick, and then
pulling it away and the last second and sending him into conniptions (definitely
paraphrasing here, btw). But now Roger has confused him. Alan wonders "what
is more important to Roger Thorpe than his lifelong dream." Suprise, we cut to

	Roger and Holly:

Roger confesses to the whole scheme. What Tashua (sp?) wanted from him, and
how he pretended to forget his wallet and broke into Ross's office, etc.
Holly is through and when Roger's says how guilty he feels about what he's
done, Holly says (and Maureen did it beautifully, IMO) "Roger, I'm not
your father, I'm not your conscience, I'm your lover. But I'm not enough."
Everytime she tries to trust him, he "blindsides" her with something like this
new treachery. She leaves, slamming the door.

Buzz and Nadine (still at the Diner):

There is a mass confusion of clients and servers at the Diner. Nadine and
Buzz are either not too gifted at waiting tables or they have their minds
elsewhere. In the middle of this mess, Nadine says "You haven't answered my
question, Buzz." Buzz charms his way out of this one by singing the Soul Mate
themesong with the clientele, and then giving Nadine a few kisses on the
cheek. The blue collar guy with the woman's name (connie?) enters the room.
Nadine goes over and plays mommy with his injuries. Now, Eleni and Frank
join in on the fun and they rush to Buzzy and Nadine full of enthusiasm about
the semi-finals. Frank then asks if anyone knows where the videotape of the
re-wedding is (why didn't you ask you wife Franky-boy?), and Nadine, in front
of Buzz, explains that she loaned it to Jenna.

David and Skull Cap Woman (in the alley outside the Diner):

David is feeding this ravenous soul. She is less than grateful. David wants
to help and is talking about the police. Naturally, she screams something about
no police. She softens a bit and says "You seem like a nice guy, but you don't
know what it's like to be hunted." David tells her that he does, regaling her
with the story of Vinny and the accident. He asks her to help Dylan, and that
he will protect her with his life. She seems to be opening up when Buzz comes
slamming through.

	Holly and Roger:

Holly says that the real reason Roger feels bad is that he got caught. She
wants to know how she will ever be able to trust him. Roger says "If getting
Spaulding means losing you, I'll have to learn how to live without it." Holly
has a brainstorm of how to learn to trust, and asks to look into his eyes.
(Now here my reception didn't allow me to see the powerful expression Zas'
eyebrows must have delivered, so bear with me if I didn't get this scene.)
Holly looks at him, and then pulls him to her and hugs him. (This scene reminds
me of the scene in Plan 9 from Outer Space, when the vampire walks into the
poor victims room, she gets up and runs away, and then he follows her. He is
so slow, there is absolutely no threat. Very much the same here, to me.)

	Cutter and Tangie and Blake:

Tangie is quite irritated and seems to be completely unwilling to accept
Cutter's help (can't say I blame her). Cutter says "I'm only a phone call
away if you need me." He leaves, and Blake again interrogates Tangie. She wants
to know what Tangie's mystery man was up to. Tangie says she has already
considered the possibility that he is involved and rejected it. (It is
quite possible she even thinks that it was he who saved her. But I'm not sure
about that.)

	Alan-Michael:

He is in some kind of fallen apart shack, and he is stuffing his face, using
a lovely handkerchief as a plate. This is all that happens.

	David and Buzz:

Buzz again makes some foolish statements linking David and Skull Cap
romantically (to use a euphemism). Buzz then starts asking David about that
re-wedding night, and what they two drunkards did. David enjoys this thread,
and is happy to relive it for Buzz. Buzz wants to know what precisely did he
say on that videotape. David tells Buzz he made Nadine sound like "Brussel
Sprouts": they look good and are healthy, but you don't want them all the
time. And then, David reminds Buzz of his glowing affirmation of love for
Jenna.

	Jenna and Alan:

Jenna starts an extremely strange soliloquy on how she was Eliza Doolitle
and she transfomed herself to move up in the world. She learned to talk the
talk and walk the walk (and while she says this, she lets her fingers walk
on Alan) and she gets what she wants. Alan gives her a rousing sarcastic
clapping. He says he has learned quite a bit about her from her spiel.
Jenna says "No. You learned exactly what I wanted you to learn." (At first, I
thought she was being defensive after opening up and in fact he had probably
learned a lot, but then based on how strange she was acting, and how much we
know of her actual softy personality, maybe she is right.) This tactic works
and Alan seems to buy it. In addition, he kisses her hand.

	Tangie and Blake:

Tangie tells Blake about refusing Alan. Blake is surprised. Tangie says
he wanted more, but that she could only be friends, despite the special link
between them. Blake says "Of course he wanted more. He's a man." (Hah!, I say.
This from the woman who rubs chicken wings on herself to get her man into it.
I bet I know who is the less interested party in their household. In fact, I
would bet Blake has yet to meet a man who is up to her appetites. What IS
she talking about!) Blake goes on to make her argument that Tangie's mystery
man is the guilty party, since, "mass murderers start out disappointed."
Tangie disagrees, and a flustered Blake says "I love you like crazy, but you're
out of your head" (possibly your gorgeous head or something like that, again
I couldn't quite make it out). (Anyone else surprised by the passion of Blake's
testament of feeling for Tangie? It's like hire a best friend or something.)
Blake too leaves filling the air with admonishments for Tangie. After she is
gone, there is a loud knocking sound and Tangie looks startled.

Holly and Roger (playing in bed):

The bell rings and a second later Blake bustles in. Roger gives her some
lame lie for why he ran out on her and Ross last night (hmm, lying to your
daughter is a good way to start this new life?). He then asks why Blake is
dressed as she is (in a black evening gown). She explains that she never went
home. That she slept at Tangie's. That Tangie was attacked.

	The Diner:

A crowd are discussing the semi-finals. Nadine is trying to fix Buzz's hair
and is flowing with positivity. David reminds the dynamic duo that they need to
be in the studo in 30 minutes (what would half the characters on this show
do without David?) Buzz flies, and David explains that he thinks Buzz is going
to pick up the videotape. Nadine looks upset.

The Skull Cap person is looking in through the window in the Diner where
Eleni is giving some instructions to Stavros about taking care of Marina.
David is telling Frank that Skull Cap is a hitchiker who saw the hijackers (hey
wait, I'm sure I've seen this one. It's some kind of Hercule Peroit story.)
Meanwhile, Skull Cap herself is sliding into the Diner unnoticed.

	Buzz and Jenna (at Jenna's):

Buzz says he has come for the tape, and she hands it to him without looking
at him. Buzz sees the silver Jenna was going to give to him and Nadine and
comments. Jenna says she is waiting to find another avid silver polisher like
him to give it to. They have some predictable, horrible miscommunications
about what is on the videotape (for those who didn't see it, Jenna never saw
what Buzz said about her, only what he said about Nadine--which despite what
David said is pretty nice). Buzz squalls "You are incredible" and walks out.
Jenna says "I'm incredible?" and appears to be teary-eyed.

At the set of Soul Mates:

There are 10 minutes to air and no Buzz. The producer asks Nadine where
her soul mate is, and she says "He couldn't make it." Cut to a quick shot of
Buzz tearing up the alley behind the diner (at least I think that is where he
is). Cut to a quick shot of Jenna leaning up against her French doors, doing
her best Catherine Deneuve (sp?) making promises to her baby again. Amalgamate
these cuts.

	Tangie's house:

Tangie is trying to remember the face of her rescuer. It is just not
coming to her, but she is close. We cut to

	Alan-Michael:

He is calling the Springfield Journal. He wants to place a personal
ad. "Father, I got your message. Wait, no, scratch that. I want it to
read..." (and here is my big big big missing piece. What did Alan-Michael
say? I know it was something about vengeance, but what I have no idea. I
tried and I tried to get it but nothing. HELP!!!!!!!!!). He then says
"nevermind, nevermind", and hangs up.

This is the end of my tape. Was this the end of the show? It seemed long
enough, but I wonder if it was. This didn't seem quite like a GL ending.
If it wasn't I'm sorry, and please send all grievances to Blacksburg Cable
service. Goodbye, and hope to hear from you all on IRC.
