GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Matt & Vanessa head for Springfield, separately.
* Frank & Eleni renew their vows.
* Bridget & Dylan "dedicate" his land.
* Roger has another encounter with Tashiwa.
* Tangie has a run-in with Mr. Jones.

Evening in Springfield, U.S.A....

ON THE WAY HOME: Van sits in a diner booth & stairs at a picture of a
sailboat. She remembers Matt with a smile. "Hey, you. Cut it out," she
says aloud.

SUMMIT LAKE: Matt covers the furniture in Vanessa's cabin & packs his
bag. He stares at the keychain Vanessa gave him.

UNKNOWN DINER: Vanessa grabs her purse & heads for the payphone.

GAZEBO: Frank & Eleni arrive in wedding attire. No one else is there yet.
Eleni's dress is long, flowing white chiffon. Frank wears his off-white
suit. He's happy to be the first one to see the bride & tells her she's
still the most beautiful bride he's ever seen. "Well, I'm a lot lighter,
that's for sure," jokes Eleni. She's happy to not have to worry about
going into labor any minute. They remember their wedding day & Eleni
remembers Yia-Yia's comment regarding the combo-marriage-baby-delivery:
starting out the marriage this way means they'll have lots of surprises
in their life. They decide they've learned some important things & pledge
their love. Frank lights up the gazebo & kisses his bride.

SPRINGFIELD JOURNAL: Harry Jones stares at the personals while his
sidekick warns him that they could get caught. Harry is hoping that Alan
responded to AM's ad & that they can find out where he is by grabbing the
message from Box 38. No such luck--the box is empty. Tangie enters & asks
if they're looking for someone.

Downstairs, Alan stands outside the darkroom while Roger bangs from the
inside & demands to be let out. He's apparently been in there for 5
hours. Doing his Tashiwa voice, Alan apologizes for the "inconvenience"
and explains that he was waiting for the building to be empty. He has
another assignment for Rog. "May I count on you, Mr. Thorpe?"

Rog wants to know the assignment before he agrees; Alan wants Rog's
agreement before he reveals the task. Alan explains that since they are
from different cultures, Rog may not be familiar with this method of
proving loyalty. Rog latches onto this & asks if it is some sort of
"dokisan." "I beg your pardon?" replies Alan. Rog explains that it's from
Zen philosophy & means a meeting in seclusion between master & student.
Alan wonders who is master & who is student; Rog thinks he's got plenty
to teach Tashiwa when it comes to Spaulding. Alan wonders why it's so
important for Rog to see a picture of him; Rog replies that it's because
it's so important to Tashiwa that Rog *not* see him.

Alan tells Rog the bracelet-deal was just a test to see if Rog could get
close enough to Alex to get her signature on certain documents that she
will not intend to sign. "Can you arrange this?" Alex asks. Rog says he
just has to get her disoriented enough. Alan insist that no drugs or
extreme measures be used & that Alex signs the documents of her own free
will. "This I am not certain you can accomplish." Rog knows that Tashiwa
knows Rog can do it, or he wouldn't have asked. But Rog advises Tashiwa
not to take it for granted that Rog *will* do it.

THE WOODS: Bridget leads a blindfolded Dylan through the moonlit woods.
He worries that his claustrophobia will kick in. Jet kisses him to
relieve his fear & removes the blindfold. It's a candle-lit picnic to
"christen" Dylan's land. She knows Dylan feels about developing the land
the same way she feels about Peter -- it's something he was meant to do.
Dylan rhapsodizes on the beauties of exuburban bliss & hopes everything
goes well with the delivery of his suddenly-available building materials.
He worries that Jet was right & it was too good to be true. Jet says she
doesn't feel that way anymore. Dylan plans to meet Carroll later on to
check out the merchandise. But he still has time for the picnic. As they
settle in for some major spit-swapping, it's questionable whether they'll
ever get to the food.

SUMMIT LAKE: As Matt's about to leave, the phone rings. Matt answers but
Van doesn't speak. "Look, we don't have to talk; just don't hang up," he
says. Van hangs up. Matt looks like he's about to cry. He picks up his
bag, turns out the lights & leaves.

JOURNAL: Jones apologizes for frightening Tangie. He tell her his name is
Jim Sherman & politely asks if the responses to personals ever get placed
in the wrong box. He placed an ad & got Box 38, but there's been no
response, so he came to check it out for himself. Tangie doubts that a
response was misplaced & suggests he might want to renew the ad for
another week & tells him to come back during business hours tomorrow to
do it. He asks if she can take care of it for him now, since he doesn't
think he can make it back during business hours. He says he's juggling 2
jobs & Tangie is sympathetic. She agrees to help him out. She pulls up
the ad on a computer & sees (in huge bold letters) that it was placed by
Alan-Michael. Jones sees the worried look on her face & asks if something
is wrong. She says the computer's just being slow. "How long did you want
to run this ad, Mr. Sherman? One week or two?"

GAZEBO: Marina is all dressed up (she looks adorable) & Grandpa Buzz says
she can't decide whether to sit on the bride's side or the groom's. Frank
was hoping she'd be the flower girl, but Nadine thinks she's too young &
might decide to head for the parking lot in the middle of the ceremony.
Buzz puts Marina down & she begins to fuss. Nadine takes her off so Buzz
can give Frank the fatherly advice he didn't get to give at the last
wedding. Buzz says he's proud of Frank for fighting up for his family &
admitting he was wrong. "A lesser man might have thought he was too good.
For the lesser man, there's a lifetime of regrets."

Eleni greets Blake & Ross. Blake bemoans her inability to duplicate
Eleni's lemon chicken & her lack of talent in the kitchen in general.
(That's if you don't count the table ;-). No, wait; that was Eve ;-))
Eleni says Frank's not marrying her for her cooking & she doesn't think
that was Ross's reason either.

Stavros tries to give David advice on using the video camera. They joke
about Nadine's photography skills. (S: I work 16 hours in the diner & she
comes back & shows me pictures of steak! :-)) Nadine arrives & tries to
give David more advice. David is all set.

Lucy shows up with her own little camera & a gift. She joins Buzz &
Frank. After some happy-chat, Buzz takes off & Lucy gives Frank her gift:
a framed photo of the family. Frank thinks it's beautiful & shows it to
Eleni. It's a shame Lucy's not in it too, they say. Or Harley & Mallet,
who couldn't make it because they're out on their fishing boat &
basically unreachable for a few weeks. Lucy looks sad. Eleni assures her
that she'll have plenty of chances to get to know Harley; she's sure
Harley will make it to Lucy's wedding. Lucy hopes if it ever happens that
she's as happy as Frank & Eleni.

PICNIC: Having finished dinner, Dylan asks what's for dessert. Jet didn't
pack any because she figured they could get some at the Cooper wedding,
to which they will be a little late. Dylan decides he needs to make a
speech, since the picnic is another dedication of the site: "Oak tree,
beaver, earthworm... lend me your ears!" Jet: "Earthworms don't have
ears." Dylan promises to build a development that will respect the
natural environment rather than destroy it. Jet compliments him on his
public speaking skills, but says that a dedication speech hadn't been
part of her plans for the evening. Her plan was for him, when he's hot &
sweaty & tired from working on the site, to be able to close his eyes &
think about the 2 of them lying under the stars. "God, I love you,"
responds Dylan & sets out to make a memory.

UNKNOWN DINER: Van calls Company & leaves a message for Bridget that
she's running on schedule. She asks about Peter. Maggie is apparently in
love with him. Van expects to be home "pretty soon" unless something
"unexpected" happens.

DARK HIGHWAY: Matt stands by the side of the road, thumb out. His sign
says "SPRINGFIELD." [Now, for anyone who still doubts that this is Matt
REARDON, why would he be heading to Springfield if not to see Bridget? He
doesn't know where Vanessa lives. Melissa Hayden was very cagey about
this issue on Pure Soap today, but I think she knows he's Big Bro.]

Later, Carroll opens the back of the Lewis Construction truck (it's the
kind with wooden slats for sides). Matt approaches & says he heard from
the gas station attendant that Carroll was heading for Springfield.
Carroll says he can't take a rider--company rules. He notices Matt's
keychain & comments on it. "A special friend gave it to me," Matt
replies. Carroll wishes Matt good luck & starts up the truck. Matt tosses
his bag over the side of the truck & climbs in as Carroll pulls out.

JOURNAL: Rog says he wouldn't be stupid enough to drug Alex to get her
signature--it wouldn't stand up in court. "Tashiwa" plays with Alex's
bracelet & complains about Americans always taking the easy way out:
"Credit cards you never repay; diets that don't last. You pick up life
the way you pick up girl in bar & then complain about her face the next
morning." :-) Rog says Alex has to be led slowly & carefully into a
willing cooperation. Alan wonders if Rog has the necessary powers of
persuasion. Rog thinks he & Alex have a bond & that she's fixated on him.
"Would you of all the people in her life, she fears you the most?" asks
Alan. Rog says he's second only to Alan Spaulding & talks about Alan's
powers of intimidation.

Upstairs, Tangie tells Jones that if he still doesn't get a reply he can
always renew the ad for another week. Jones says if he has no response by
then, he'll have to find another way. Tangie assures him that most of the
customers are very satisfied. She gives him his receipt & he just stares
at her. She asks if there's a problem, but the phone rings before he says
anything. She has to go get some files from another room. She excuses
herself & goes into an office with closed blinds, where she closes the
door & bars it with a chair. She calls Security & explains her situation,
adding that the guy's making her nervous. Outside, Jones looks at Alan-
Michael's Spaulding Enterprises ID, then wanders over to the computer,
where Tangie has stupidly left AM's insertion order displayed. Jones now
knows that Tangie knows he's not on the up-&-up. He stares over at the
office where she went.

DYLAN'S LAND: Post-boff, Dylan decides the place is now truly blessed,
truly theirs. Jet laughs conspiratorily. She suggests skylights in the
houses. Dylan agrees. Jet thinks people will be lining up around the
block for a chance to buy the houses. Dylan looks at his watchless wrist
& realizes that his shipment is due any minute. He pulls on his clothes
in a rush as Bridget watches worriedly.

LEWIS TRUCK: Matt wraps himself in a tarp & settles in for the ride. He
seems a little nervous.

JOURNAL: Tangie can't seem to get any help from Security (guy's on his
break) & wonders if she'll have to call the police. She asks that someone
come up immediately. Jones bangs on the door & says he thought she died
in there. Tangie says she's been on the phone, on hold. Jones goes
through her desk drawer & says he thinks something went wrong with the
computer. "It made a funny noise & then the screen went black. I think
you'd better come take a look." Tangie says she can't hang up because
she's taking down an exclusive story. Jones finds an envelope in the desk
& takes it. He starts to approach the door, then stops. Tangie hears a
noise, then silence. "Mr. Sherman? Are you there?" she calls.

Downstairs, Alan asks Rog to tell him more about Alex & her brother. "Why
does she fear him?" Rog says talking to Alan is like "trying to make
contact with an alien life form. I've never known a person with so little
emotion." Tashiwa has heard that Alan is "misunderstood." Rog retells
Alex's tale of young Alan standing emotionlessly over a dead rabbit. "She
realized that if she ever crossed him, he would crush her without a 2nd
thought." Tashiwa asks how much longer Alan will be in jail. Rog reminds
him that it's down to 4 months & he'd like to conclude their business
before then. Tashiwa asks if Rog is afraid Alan will join forces with
Alex. Rog doubts it. Tashiwa asks if Alan has any resources to mount a
fight. Rog knows Alan lost his Spaulding shares when he went to jail but
doesn't know what happened to them. Tashiwa suggests that Rog find out.

GAZEBO: Blake voices her desire to find some fulfilling work. Eleni says
she once also felt that once she got married, her life would be perfect.
She advises Blake that as part of a pair, she & Ross are much stronger
than they would be alone.

Ross sees David with the camcorder & wonders if he's going to go to film
school instead of law school. David is sure he wants to practice law. He
tells Ross how hurt he's been feeling since Kat delayed her return. He
doesn't even know what country she's in & the postcards are coming less
frequently. Ross says that means she'll have a lot to tell David when she
returns. David hopes Ross is right.

Stavros accompanies Mrs. Pappas, who is babbling about clocks. Frank
decides it's time to get the show on the road. Mrs. Pappas asks Blake who
she is. "An old friend of the groom's" replies Blake, then introduces her
husband as "Frank's divorce lawyer." :-) Stavros says the minister is
late, but Frank says they don't need him. "We know exactly what we want
to say to each other, don't we?" he asks Eleni. She agrees. Kiss-kiss.

Buzz introduces Frank & Eleni: The Sequel. David records the doings.
Bridget arrives just in time. Frank & Eleni thank their gathered friends
& family for their love, encouragement & support.

JOURNAL: Rog figures there are only about 5 people who could have
inherited Alan's shares of Spaulding. Since he has an "in" with the
Spaulding corporate counsel, he figures he can get a look at the transfer
papers. He asks how long Tashiwa is willing to wait for the info. No
answer. Tashiwa has mysteriously disappeared again & Rog is pissed. He
vows to make Tashiwa sorry for playing games.

Upstairs, someone bangs on the office door. Tangie warns him that she has
called Security. "Why on earth did you do that?" asks Alan. Tangie opens
the door & pulls him inside. She asks if he saw a man, but he didn't. He
just wanted to see the other place she worked, he explains. Tangie tells
him about the man who scared her, but doesn't give any details, so Alan
has no clue that it was Jones. He thinks Tangie looks nice when she's
flustered. He invites her to dinner, but she reminds him that she
promised to cook. She goes to turn off the computer & sees the insertion
order for AM's ad still on screen. She turns it off & they leave.

LEWIS WAREHOUSE: Carroll pulls up in the truck & Dylan greets him. A
masked gunman in black orders Dylan & Carroll to freeze & put their hands
in the air. The gunman has two accomplices, also masked & dressed in
black. Dylan & Carroll stick `em up and Matt stays hidden under the tarp
as the screen fades to black.
