GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Vanessa & Matt get better acquainted ;-) while Josh searches for Van
* AM plans a trip & says his goodbyes; Harry Jones plans a surprise
* Alan & Jenna do some business
* Alex & Mindy lock horns (again)

Afternoon in Springfield, Summit Lake & parts unknown...

DESERTED ISLAND: Vanessa & Matt care involved in major liplock, then he
pulls away. Vanessa walks away. Matt tries to explain that she deosn't
know anything about him. "You don't need more complications in your life.
You're the most incredible woman I ever met & I'm just not sure I'm the
guy who can turn things around for you."

JOURNAL OFFICES: AM reads the letter that is purportedly from his father,
but is really from Harry Jones. The letter says Alan is overjoyed to hear
from AM but can't come to Springfield just yet. He asks AM to meet him at
a rendezvous point about 2 hours out of town & encloses a map. "P.S. The
door will say KEEP OUT, but it will be unlocked. I'll be waiting. I need
you. All will be explained." AM smiles.

JENNA'S SUITE: Jenna tells Alan that she learned his identity from his
photo on the wall at Cedars, and that AM was the one to enlighten her.
Alan wants to know what she told AM. Nothing, she says, but wonders why
Alan wants to keep him in the dark. Alan says it's none of her beeswax,
but explains about AM knowing of his early release & the personal ad. He
asks Jenna to keep AM from pursuing his search. Jenna doesn't take
orders, but Alan is sure she can learn. "How's the baby?" he asks. Jenna
tries to play dumb. She says she's not pregnant & if she were, why would
she keep it a secret? Just then, Buzz knocks & asks Jenna to let him in.

Alan doesn't want Jenna to let anyone in, so she asks Buzz to tell her
through the door. She opens it a crack to say she can't let him in &
she'll call him later. "Are you trying to tell me you're not alone?" Buzz
asks. Jenna confirms & tells him to leave any message for her at the
front desk. "I think you're the one with the message. And I got it,"
replies Buzz, then leaves. Jenna closes the door & brushes Buzz off as a
persistent bill collector. Alan tells her she needn't worry about bills
if she works for him. He says she's under no obligation, however, and
they can part with no ill will. He promises that if she'll keep his
secret, he'll keep hers. As he says this, he idly opens a drawer & pulls
out some baby clothes that Jenna had purchased. She realizes she is
caught & asks if he can really save her business from Alex. Alan is tired
of trying to convince her & figures maybe she has been conned too many
times to ever trust another man. "But you're not just another man," says
Jenna. "You're Alan Spaulding. That's different, isn't it?"

SPAULDING MANSION: Lillian arrives for a visit with Alex, who has been
going through some old photos. Lill says Alex looks pretty good "for
someone who's had the venom sucked out of them by Roger Thorpe." :-) Alex
asks for the latest hospital gossip: "Who's having an affair with whom?"
Lill's face falls as she says it's just the same old twosome. "Who's
that?" asks Alex, then apologizes for her insensitivity when she realizes
Lill was referring to Ed & Eve & it's still a sore subject. Lill tells
about how she wished them both the best, but admits it still hurts to see
Ed with another woman. Alex says Lill needn't apologize for being human.

Lucy arrives with some papers for Alex -- mail & messages that Nick put
aside for her to see. Alex asks what Nick's been working on. Lucy says he
was looking at the archives ("stuff so old it's not even on the
computer!") and adds that she brought copies of all the correspondence he
sent out, just as Alex had requested. Mindy arrives in the hallway with a
tray in time to hear this. She pauses out of sight as Lill inquires about
Alex checking up on Nick & Alex explains that Nick's new at the job &
she's just providing a safety net for him. She adds that she's been in
touch with him several times a day on her private line. Mindy enters as
the doorbell rings & Mindy asks Lucy to get the door. Lucy reluctantly
obliges & lets in AM. He's glad to see that Alex is OK.

SUMMIT LAKE: The sherriff tells Josh they can't send out a search party
for Vanessa until the weather clears up. Josh doesn't want to wait & asks
about local helicopters. He learns there is one, but the sherriff thinks
it's too windy to go up. Josh asks the Lewis pilot if he can handle it &
the pilot says he'll give it a try. Josh asks that the sherriff put out
the word to the police & harbormasters of all the towns around the lake
to be on the lookout for Van. He describes her & adds that she's alone.
The old-timer pipes up to say she might not be, since he rented his
dinghy to a guy who went after her & he didn't return either.

DESERTED ISLAND: Matt doesn't want Van to do something she'll regret "in
a day or a week." Van doesn't know what she'll be doing in the next hour.
Matt notes that it's stopped raining & starts to go look for wood. "I
don't have a husband," says Vanessa. This stops Matt in his tracks. She
explains that she divorced her husband & that part of her life is over.
"I don't know what I expect from you. I don't know what I expect from
myself. It was smart of you to stop." Matt goes out for the wood. Vanessa
sighs as if she is exasperated with herself.

DINER: Nadine tells Buzz that Frank & Eleni are getting married again.
Buzz seems to have his mind on other things. Frank says it will be a
small affair, just family & their guests. Buzz asks if the butcher has
made his delivery yet & when Frank says yes, he's glad. "I want to chop
some meat!" he announces, then goes to the kitchen. Nadine watches him
with a combination of suspicion & concern. Frank asks her what's eating
Buzz. Nadine thinks it's a who, not a what. Eleni figures on 25-30 people
at the vow renewal, based on each family member inviting 1-2 guests.
Nadine thinks they should control the guest list more carefully to avoid
having an unwanted guest. "What if Lucy decided to invite Alan-Michael?"
for example. (You *know* that's not who she's worried about!) Frank says
it's no problem, in fact, he might even invite AM himself. Eleni looks at
him curiously.

JENNA'S SUITE: Alan asks how much Jenna wants to be his eyes, ears, nose
& throat. Jenna figures $15K ought to take care of her legal battle with
Alex. Alan promises her a check when she gets back from delivering a note
to Box 38 at the Journal. She glances at it & thinks it doesn't seem
quite finished. Alan reads it aloud: "`Do not attempt to contact your
father for your well-being & his.' What exactly do you think is missing?"
Jenna doesn't want to intrude, but thinks it doesn't sound very fatherly.
Alan points out with some rancor that AM helped Roger put him in jail.
Jenna didn't know. Alan is concerned about AM's safety & explains about
the prison escape of his mortal enemy. He describes Harry Jones to Jenna
& warns her to contact him right away if she sees the guy. She says she'd
be happy to, but finds it hard to understand how anyone lucky enough to
have a child could become so estranged from him. "I plan on being best
friends with my baby for life!" Alan had that dream too & knows that it
comes true for some people, "and I hope you're one of the lucky ones." He
takes back the note & adds, "If you care for me at all, be patient. Watch
& wait. The day will come. Love, A." Jenna nods approvingly.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex describes her ordeal with Roger for AM, who
wonders why she's laid up. Ed's just cautious, she explains. AM asks
dutifully if there's anything he can do. Alex says no; she has plenty of
friends & family to help her. Mindy looks uncomfortable. AM decides to
leave, but a photo of him & Alan together catches his eye. Mindy asks to
see it. AM says it was a long time ago & asks if he can keep it. Alex
says yes. He thanks her & announces his exit. Before leaving, he walks
over to Alex & kisses her on the cheek. She seems surprised, but doesn't
flinch. As AM heads toward the door, Lucy stops him to ask if he's OK,
since he seems somehow different. AM says that somebody he cares about
needs him, & he has to go away for awhile. Lucy realizes that what AM
always needed was someone who needed him. She understands that the reason
they didn't work out is because she didn't need him enough.

Lucy: I wasn't interested in what you could do for me. I guess all I
wanted from you was just... you."
AM: I guess any guy who doesn't jump at that doesn't deserve it in the
      first place.

With tears in her eyes, Lucy wishes AM good luck. He leaves.

SOMEPLACE ABOUT 2 HOURS FROM SPRINGFIELD: Harry Jones & his sidekick (a
younger guy with a ponytail) set a booby trap for AM. The sidekick opines
that it's too bad they won't actually be getting Alan. Jones figures
getting the son will bring the father out of hiding. After Jones sets the
trap, the sidekick paints over the word "EXPLOSIVES" on the door.

DINER: Nadine gives Frank a look, so he explains that he respects Eleni's
friendship with AM & if she wants him there, that's fine with him. Eleni
says she'll think about it. Jenna enters & Nadine thanks her for the
wedding gift. Jenna explains that she was too embarrassed to ask the
Coopers if they had remarried, so she called the TV station & learned the
scoop that way. She asks to see Buzz, since he had come by to see her
when she couldn't talk. Nadine says Buzz is busy but goes to tell him
that Jenna is there.

Eleni thinks it might be uncomfortable for AM to watch her & Frank renew
their vows & wonders if that was why Frank suggested inviting him in the
first place. Frank denies any ulterior motive. AM enters.

Jenna rereads the note from Alan to AM. AM orders some sandwiches to go,
for his trip. Eleni asks where he's going & he makes up a story about
investing in shopping centers in Missouri. "That's quite a commute,"
comments Eleni & wonders if he'll be moving. (Another clue--Springfield
is NOT in Missouri.) She asks if he can hold off a bit & invites him to
the vow renewal. He declines the invitation due to the "business" trip,
but offers his good wishes. Eleni goes to get AM's food.

Jenna asks how long AM will be gone. "Why? Are you going to miss me?" he
asks. "Always, darling," she replies. AM says if he never sees her again,
it will be too soon. Jenna refolds the letter & places it in her purse.
Eleni gives AM his order & wishes him a safe trip. He takes off.

DESERTED ISLAND: Matt sits down next to Vanessa. She doesn't want his
pity. He pities the guy who lost her. "I'm not gonna pretend that I was't
glad to hear that you don't belong to anybody except yourself. Because
tonight I want you to belong to me." Van smiles. They engage in a long,
slow kiss, then Matt unbuttons Van's shirt. Pan to the flickering fire.
(We all know what THAT means in the language of cinematography... ;-)

Post-flicker, Van cuddles against Matt's bare chest. They are covered
from the waist down by the sail. Matt's hand & Van's right arm shield her
right breast from the camera. Matt talks idly of getting more wood. Van
thinks it will be hard to go back to real life. Matt agrees. Van figures
he must have had lots of "adventures" on the road. Matt reads
"adventures" as "women" & Van admits that's what she was thinking. "Well,
I can tell you I've always been safe. (Oh, so did he pack some condoms
for his unplanned trip to the desert island?) But I'd be a liar if I said
I was a saint." Van laughs & says that's pretty normal for a beautiful,
healthy young man. Matt takes minor offense at her characterization of
him as a healthy specimen "available for romps in the hay with equally
perfect-specimen females..." :-) He says that's the furthest thing from
his mind & he's sorry if he didn't let her know what being with her means
to him. She's just having trouble accepting it. "Get over it," he
advises. "OK," she smiles. He gives her a piece of ironweed that he found
earlier & explains how sturdy it is; it's something that everyone sees,
but no one ever notices. "Kind of reminds me of myself. Until you." More
kissing.

RUSTY NAIL: Josh, the sherriff & the old-timer plan the search. Josh
heads out with the map, hell-bent on destroying Van's little paradise.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex & Lill look at a photo of some guy they were both
in love with. Alex notices that Mindy's on the phone & asks Lill if she
can hear what Mimbo is saying. Lill laughs at the idea of spying for Alex
& decides it's time to leave. Mindy hangs up. Alex says Mindy didn't
waste a minute calling Nick to tell him she'd been checking up on him. A
shaken Mindy tells Alex that she was speaking to Henry, who told her that
Van is missing in a storm. Alex is properly concerned & offers to help.
Mindy says Josh is looking for her & Henry & HB are going up to the lake.
Mindy's going to the Lewis house to stay with Bill. Alex wants to help
but Mindy tells her off instead. She says she is sticking to her vow
(made when she returned from Europe) to not play anymore games with Alex
or get involved in anything that went on between Alex & Nick. She keeps
telling herself that she's moving out soon & it's only for a few more
months. Alex says her offer to help is because she truly cares about
Vanessa. Mindy walks out without a word.

DINER: Lucy shows up, feeling sad. Frank is sympathetic. He tries to
cheer her up by telling her about the vow renewal. "Remarriages seem to
run in the family," comments Jenna. Lucy says she's happy & heads out.
Jenna decides she's tired of waiting for Buzz & leaves too.

In the kitchen, Nadine tells Buzz that it was Jenna who called WSPR about
their marriage, so if he tells her the truth, he should be ready for
Jenna to blow it for them as far as SoulMates goes. She reminds him that
*he's* the one who will lose out on the cash. Buzz wonders why Nadine
thinks Jenna is the one who called. "She told me herself," replies
Deenie, adding that Jenna is out front waiting to see him. He goes out
front, but Jenna has left. He calls after her.

Jenna returns & Buzz sarcastically apologizes for her having to come "to
this part of town." She asks him to tell her what he wanted to tell her
earlier. He goes into the kitchen & returns with Jenna's wedding gift. He
says they can't accept it. "Why?" she asks. He says it's too expensive;
she can't afford it. Jenna says she can't return it because it's
monogrammed. He shoves the gift at her anyway. She shoves it back. They
play hot potato with the box until it falls to the ground. Buzz storms
out. The rest of the Coopers hide their faces.

BOOBY TRAP CENTRAL: AM arrives at the appointed spot. It looks like a
construction site. He sees the door marked "KEEP OUT" and calls softly
for his dad. He opens the door & walks in. He looks around.

Somewhere nearby, Harry Jones sees that AM has entered & relishes the
thought of hurting Alan through AM. Sidekick recommends blowing Dodge,
but Jones says they have to get rid of AM's car first by rolling it into
a ravine.

AM sees another door & knocks on it, calling "Dad?" It's the door to
which the trip-wire is attached. He starts to turn the knob, then turns
around as though he heard something. "Father, where are you?" he wonders.

DESERTED ISLAND: Matt compliments Van on her excellent fish-cooking, but
she won't tell him her secret ingredient. He jokes that she'll have to
cook for him all the time now because she's spoiled him. He figures her
family must be looking for her, but she doesn't think they would have
heard about the storm or have expected to hear from her yet. "I guess we
can renew the lease on our cave, then," jokes Matt. Van likes this idea &
makes suggestions for redecorating. Matt can build a 4-poster bed
"because I know you're very good with your hands." Matt stands up &
engages her in another round of lip-lock. They pull apart at the sound of
a helicopter. The look on Van's face says she knows it's for her.

Without much enthusiasm, Van suggests that they leave the cave & set a
fire outside so the chopper can see them. Equally unenthusiastically,
Matt agrees. Van kisses him again & they drop to the floor of the cave.

JENNA'S SUITE: Alan rereads AM's personal ad, then contemplates a handful
of jewelry, musing regretfully that it would have looked wonderful on
Tangie. Jenna bursts in, noticeably overwrought & carrying the unaccepted
monogrammed silver. Alan asks what's wrong, but she rebuffs him by saying
she can be as mysterious as he. She won't reveal every personal detail of
her life & her arrangement with Alan is purely business. BTW, he owes her
$15K. He hands over the check. Jenna holds it a moment then gives it back
to Alan along with the letter. He angrily asks why she didn't deliver it.
She explains that AM was on his way out of town & she didn't think he'd
want the letter sitting in a box at the Journal for someone else to find.

BOOBY TRAP CENTRAL: AM re-examines the map & decides he's in the right
place. He walks out the door & notices the wet paint. He picks up a rag &
wipes it off to reveal the words "DANGER EXPLOSIVES." He goes back inside
& considers the second door, then pushes it open. BOOOOM!!!!!! A huge
flash & explosion blows outward as the screen fades to black.

Talk about your Friday cliffhangers! Will AM survive? Tune in Monday....
