Highlights:
- Bill finds out his mother is alive
- Holly gives Ross a piece of her mind
- Mandy offers Rog a new family
- Van makes a discovery about Michael

COURTHOUSE: Michelle is waiting in the hall as Judge Carson enters.
Michelle tells the judge that she won't keep him for long and mentions that
she knows Holly. The judge wants to know what Michelle's point is, and she
wonders if he might be open to alternative sentencing. The judge says he
has already made his mind up about Jesse. Michelle says he didn't have all
the facts, and the judge agrees to give her five minutes.

JAIL: Jesse is playing air guitar as Griffin enters - turning off Jesse's
head phones. Jesse wants to know why Griffin is there, and Griff says he
wants to work on an appeal. Jesse doesn't think Griffin can help him. Jesse
says he will just do his time.

CHEZ MATESSA: Matt and Dinah are both on their phones calling hotels
looking for Van and Michael. They hang up and Dinah is discouraged. Matt
says they have to keep calling. The doorbell rings and Dinah gets it: it's
Hart. She blurts out that her mother is alive and Hart congratulates her.
Hart wants to know where Van is. Dinah tells him that Van is with a man who
was convicted of murder.

LIGHTHOUSE TWIRL

CHAMBERLAIN LAKE COTTAGE: Van tells Michael that Daddy couldn't keep track
of keys, and finds a spare by the door. They enter; the furniture is all
covered. Van remembers that Matt stayed there on the hammock a few times.
Michael offers to go out to get some food. Van says she wants to talk about
what happened. Michael doesn't want to talk and that it wasn't a big deal.
Van says it was a big deal and reminds him that he kissed her.

CHEZ MATESSA: Matt and Dinah tell Hart they only missed Van in Switzerland
by a couple of days. They tell Hart that Michael Burke killed his patient
and lover who was also suffering from a crippling disease. Hart wants to
know if Van is Michael's lover; neither Dinah nor Matt thinks so. Matt says
she must rely on Michael a lot. Matt goes to call Frank again. Hart
apologizes for not being there for Dinah - but he had to take care of
sending Peter off. Dinah understands - and tells Hart how bad she feels
watching Matt on his search, and how she would feel if she had to look for
Hart. Hart assures her that he isn't going anywhere.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Ross wonders where Blake could be. Fletch and Holly are
also there with all the kids.  Holly says that Blake needed to get away;
Ross wants to know why she would have a left the message, and starts to
re-play it. Holly begs him not to play it again, but Ross does anyway.
They listen to the message; Holly thinks it's probably nothing - but Ross is
concerned that Blake didn't even ask about the boys. Holly reassures Ross
that Blake knew the boys were in good hands. Holly is sure that Blake would
have called back if something were wrong - and Fletch agrees. Ross tells
Holly he knows she is just as worried as he is. Ross wonders if Blake ever
thinks about the people who care about her; he goes on about how she never
wants to take responsibility for anything. Holly sighs - visibly trying to
keep her temper in check. Ross keeps going on about how Blake is playing a
victim game to get attention. Holly loses it - and tells Ross that Blake
has been all over the map because of him and that if Blake is acting out -
he should just deal with it. Holly tells Ross that Blake needs him to love
her - flaws and all - and if Ross can't do that he should keep his mouth
shut, visit his children, and stay away from Blake! Ross leaves. Fletch
quips that Holly should let Ross know how she REALLY feels, and she warns
him not to start with her. Fletch says he's afraid to - because she was so
hard on Ross. Holly says Ross deserved it. Fletch says that hitting a guy
when he's down is Roger's style. Holly says when it comes to family, Roger
is right - you fight for them no matter what.

SPAULDING STUDY: Rog wants to know what else Amanda has to say; she's
already given up the lawsuit for all the money, and is bringing Alan back to
the company. Amanda says she's doing it because of Roger's advice - and he
wants to know when he told her to play Mother Theresa - to Alan. Amanda
says that Rog always says that family is important, and she's trying to
bring her family back together. Rog can't believe she's trying to pass the
whole thing off as his idea. He tells her that what he has with his family
took years to build - she can't just sprinkle fairy dust and make everthing
o.k. Amanda agrees that her family will be back-biting ingrates until the
end of time - she points out that Alan has even taken Annie in. Rog thinks
that Amanda is afraid that Alan will make Annie the queen bee; "not while I
have some sting in me", Mandy retorts. Mandy says it doesn't even really
matter, because they will all have to go up against the Thorpes - the real
king and queen of the hill - and that's why she put the engagement ring back
on. The ball is back in Rog's court; she tells him that if he doesn't want
to marry her, the time to say so is now.

JUDGE'S CHAMBERS: Judge Carson tells Michelle that she is a very thoughtful
young woman, most people wouldn't have taken the effort. Michelle mentions
again that Holly thinks the judge is fair. The judge tells Michelle that
she would make a good lawyer because she knows how to press her case. He
sends Michelle away. She sits in the hallway and hopes it will work out.

JAIL: Griff asks Jesse what kind of music he likes. Jesse likes Nine Inch
Nails; Griff is a jazz man. Jesse wonders if they have CDs in jail because
he's going to be looking at bars for a long time. Griff thinks jail will be
really boring. Jesse thinks Griff should find someone else to help. Griff
starts to talk about the basis for an appeal - he heard that Jesse's father
came by. Jesse says his father only stopped by to say goodbye and good
riddance. The bailiff comes over and unlocks the cell saying that Judge
Carson wants to see Jesse and his attorney in chambers. Jesse asks Griff
what's up and Griff has no idea.

CHAMBERLAIN COTTAGE: Michael says the kiss came as a surprise to him - it
was a mistake, and it's a non-issue. Van is kind of surprised and wonders
if that's all he has to say. Michael wants to forget that it happened - and
Van reminds him that after he kissed he said please don't let this happen
again. Michael says he doesn't remember that. Van wants to know what
Michael is avoiding. Michael explains that Van is his patient and that he
was inappropriate and apologizes. Van brings up the patient that he lost,
and Michael wants to know why. Van thinks that maybe what happened between
Michael and his other patient is happening with them. Michael says that he
isn't afraid of that.

CHEZ MATESSA: Matt comes back and says they are still looking. Apparently
the woman that Michael killed was married. Hart wonders again if Van and
Michael are lovers; Matt thinks aloud about Michael brainwashing Van. Dinah
says everything will be o.k. Matt says he can't lose Van again; Bill comes
in and wonders why everyone is talking about Van like she is still alive.
Matt walks across the room and say that Van is still alive. Off Bill's
puzzled look.

HALFTIME

Bill thinks that this is a sick joke.  Dinah tries to get him to sit down;
Bill reminds everyone that they buried his mother. Matt reminds Bill that it
was just a memorial. Hart says that Van was alive and in Switzerland; Bill
puts it together about Tess. Dinah says it's o.k. and that they will bring
her home as soon as possible. Bill starts to wonder how long they have known
and didn't tell him and tries to jump Matt. Hart holds Bill off.

CHAMBERLAIN COTTAGE: Michael tells Van that the woman he was in love with
was named Celeste and that she looked a bit like Van. He tells Van, with
difficulty, that when she got upset and he held her that for a moment he saw
Celeste. Van is understanding. Michael says that's as far as it went. Van
wants to make sure. Michael says that he and Van are just friends - but he
and Celeste - Van breaks in and says that Michael and Celeste were like she
and Matt are. Michael breaks the conversation and says he is going out to
get dinner; Van tries to get him to stay and talk more. Van tells him he
doesn't have to grieve alone. She goes on about how she must have a had a
good sense of humour, and Michael yells that he doesn't want to talk about her.

SPAULDING STUDY: Amanda pours drinks and talks about her wedding gown. Rog
says she is mixing up business and personal matters - since she dropped the
lawsuit. Rog thinks Amanda is trying to leave him out in the cold. Amanda
wants to build the company on family. She tells Rog that if he wants to
marry her for her, then they can take the company to the top. Rog reminds
her that Spauldings will do anything for money, and wonders why she would be
any different. Amanda tells him that even though he is business saavy, she
is impressed by his success with his family. Amanda is impressed at how Rog
kept bouncing back with his kids, and how much they care about him. She is
now convinced that family is the important thing. Amanda is thinks that
(even though Rog hasn't said so) that he missed being there to watch his
children grow up. Amanda says she can give him another chance - with her
included. Rog asks if she is offering him another family - and she says an
extended family. She then tells him that if he wants to bail out, now is
the time.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Holly bounces Kevin as Fletch goes on about their
afternoon. Holly apologizes about all the family crises lately. Ross comes
back and takes Kevin from Holly. Ross apologizes to Holly and Fletch and
says he is worried sick about Blake. Ross gets an idea - and says it's time
to use his DA clout; he calls and asks for Levy. Levy gives him a bit of run
around - Ross tells him to find his wife and now!

COURTHOUSE: Griff and Jesse enter the judge's chambers - they don't see
Michelle sitting in the hall. Jesse goes on about what else they could do
to him. The judge tells Griff to put a muzzle on his client or he will send
him upstate.

CHEZ MATESSA: Bill is still fighting mad. Bill wants to know where his
mother is. Matt explains that they don't know. Dinah says she is
travelling with a murderer. Matt tells Bill that Van was in SF and went to
the graduation, but he didn't know until later. Matt explains that he and
Dinah have been on the phone all day, and the whole police force is looking
for Van. Bill gets in Matt's face and says he is going to look for his mother.

Matt explains that he would tell Bill if he knew where Van was. Bill rushes
out. Matt goes after him and Dinah tries to go too. Hart tells her to let
Bill go and work things out on his own. Dinah says he will be all alone and
she has to help - Hart agrees and they leave.

JUDGE'S CHAMBERS: Griff asks why he asked them there. The judge explains
that new information has come to light that has made him re-think a closed
case. Griff says he didn't know about new information. The judge tells
Griff to just listen; he goes on that the new information leads him to
believe that Jesse may have misunderstood his probation obligations -
affadavits, and brochures Jesse was given. The judge says that Jesse can't
read; Griff is confused. The judge offers Jesse another chance; Jesse asks
if that means no jail. The judge says he has an idea that will keep Jesse
out of jail - and in a remedial reading group. Griff whispers to Jesse to
say yes, and say it now. Jesse says yes, and the judge says it is his last
break. The judge expects Jesse to read it all back to him in a few months.
Michelle listens outside the door looking pleased.

Michelle is still listening outside as the judge explains that there are
many students who volunteer for adult literacy programs. The judge sends
the bailiff to get Michelle. Jesse is incredulous and asks if his choice is
jail - or her? The judge says that is exactly his choice. Jesse looks
irritated and Michelle looks pleased.

SPAULDING STUDY: Rog is amazed that Mandy - the business woman - would
consider having a family. Mandy jokes about maternity business suits, but
reminds Roger that she has all the requisite parts. Rog agrees; Mandy
reminds him that this is not about her having their child - but about them.
She wants there to be no games playing or one-upmanship - just the two most
powerful people in SF. Rog and Mandy kiss.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Ross is still on the phone with Levy negotiating how many
police they can send out to look for Blake. Fletch picks up toys. The
doorbell rings as Ross gets off the phone - it's two men from the Clayton
police department. They ask if Blake is his wife. They give Ross a purse to
identify - he want's to know where Blake is. The two policemen suggest they
all go inside. Ross lets them in and looks very worried.

CHEZ MATTESSA: Matt is thinking out loud about where else Van would go to
say goodbye. It dawns on him that Van would be at the lake and he rushes out.

CHAMBERLAIN COTTAGE: Van is sitting alone, looking bored. She picks up a
book and finds a picture of Celeste - which she takes out. Then, she finds
a copy of the article about Michael's murder conviction and she is
incredulous. Michael walks in and says she shouldn't have done that. He
towers over Van and she looks frightened.
