GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1995
                       -or-
                "Who loves ya', baby?"

Highlights:
* Tangie gets a bitter taste of testimony, thanks to her misguided love.
* Buzz tells the Spaulding siblings to buzz off, `cause he loves Lucy.
* Van wonders if she can love Dinah.
* Ross wonders why his love isn't enough for Dinah.
* Dinah chooses Rog's tangible love over Ross's ethereal love.
* Blake pledges her love to Rog, but her allegiance to Ross.

Bright & early in Springfield, USA...

POLICE HEADQUARTERS: ADA Robertson browbeats Tangie about her relation-ship
with Alan in preparation for testifying at his preliminary hearing. Nick
protests the harshness, but the ADA warns her to get used to it.

DINER: Alan enters & Buzz immediately recommends that he dine elsewhere.
Alan's looking for AM, but Buzz won't give him the time of day.

MATT'S ROOM: As Matt pulls on a T-shirt, Vanessa returns from a fruitless
Dinah search. D didn't sleep in her bed--it's obvious she spent the night
w/Rog. "How am I going to get her away from him?" Matt shrugs, "Give her
what she wants."

ROGER'S SUITE: Rog awakens to disappointment-- Dinah's side of the bed is
empty. She's sitting across the room in his shirt, & has been there,
thinking, since 4 AM. [Strangely, her makeup's perfect.] "So early for so
much work," comments Rog, inviting her back to bed. "Don't you dare make
fun of me!" she says angrily. She stalks out. Rog is nonplused.

MARLER HOUSE: Ross wipes shaving cream off his face & vows to retrieve
Dinah from Rog's clutches. Blake wants to go along, but Ross promises he
won't kill Rog, much as he wants to. [At this, my boyfriend noted that it's
only because the show can't afford to lose any more villains.] "If they're
together, in his room..." wonders Blake. Ross says he can handle it. "I
just hope I can," worries Blake. Marlers exit, stage left.

ROG'S: Rog tries to jolly Dinah through the door. He says he wasn't making
fun, just teasing a little. She's a sexy, wonderful new part of his life, &
she was magnificent last night. [Is he referring to her performance at the
Towers, or at the Regency? ;-)] He says that now that they're out in the
open, they should be enjoying themselves. Dinah emerges & expresses
morning-after regrets about burning her bridges. Rog thought she burned her
bridges awhile back; last night was just the icing on the cake. Dinah was
tormented all night by what Rog calls Ross's "patented look of pompous
disapproval."

Dinah corrects him: "It was disgust. Do you have any idea how it feels to
have your own father look at you with disgust?" Actually, Rog is well-
acquainted with it & knows it can be survived. Rog calls Ross & Van "self-
righteous, arrogant, snobbish fools." Dinah says they're still her parents.
Rog thought Dinah was stronger. He wonders if she's worried that Van will
change the trust fund rules. Dinah claims she isn't totally mercenary, but
Rog isn't buying. "I have this awful, empty feeling when I think about them
not loving me," Dinah claims. But you said they never loved you, reminds
Rog. Well, she admits, they did, just not the way she wanted. But it was
nice when they worried & felt guilty. She's sure she made a big mistake by
throwing Rog in their faces & spending the night with him.

Rog finds this somewhat unflattering. She asks if he'll take her in.
"You're not a foster child," he replies. She's got her parents' undivided
attention right now. He's amused that they find it worse for her to be his
lover than to be kidnapped by Viktor. He sits her on his lap & says Ross &
Van are right now trying to figure out how to break them up & the deeper
she slips into his clutches, the more attention she'll get from them. In
the end, she'll win. He kisses her & hugs her gently. A pounding on the
door interrupts them. Ross yells, "Is my daughter in there?" Rog is
unsurprised. Dinah blanches.

MATT'S ROOM: Van says giving in to Dinah would be the worst thing she could
do. Matt says that's not what he meant. When they were being held hostage,
he saw the scared little girl in Dinah & he thinks he understands why she
does what she does. She wants the love & attention she thinks she missed
out on in her childhood. Van protests that Dinah just pushes her away. Matt
thinks she doesn't mean to, but she doesn't know the difference between
money & love. "Maybe if you told her you loved her, really loved her, she
wouldn't throw this Roger thing in your face." This cuts Van to the bone.
"Are you telling me that everything Dinah is, is my fault, `cause I don't
love her?" Matt is silent for a moment, then asks, "Do you?"

POLICE HQ: Nick suggests taking a break. Robertson says Tangie won't get
any breaks on the stand, but acquiesces, leaving N & T alone for a bit.
Nick asks if she really wants to go through with the testimony. She doesn't
think she could back out now even if she wanted to. Nick's con-cerned
because the questions are upsetting her so much, & they haven't even gotten
to the hard stuff. T reminds Nick that he encouraged her to do this in the
1st place. Nick wants to see Alan back behind bars, but he's not sure T
should be the one to put him there. Tangie says the case is weak to begin
with & if she doesn't testify, it'll just be AM's word against his dad's.
She says she wants to do it, but doesn't sound very sure. Nick emphasizes
the nasty tabloid publicity that will result. "Do you want to tell the
world what Alan Spaulding was like in bed? Whether he was good for you or
not?" He says she has to be certain.

DINER: Buzz refuses to help Alan. AM's message for his dad is that he wants
nothing to do with Alan. Alan says Buzz knows nothing about his son. Buzz
says AM has changed. "He might even be a real human being underneath all
that Spaulding crap." Alan thinks being a Spaulding means everything to AM.
Buzz suggests that maybe AM will improve the family reputation once Alan's
in jail. Alan's in no mood for advice from a man who abandoned his family
for 20 years. Buzz says at least he has tried to do good for his family
since he returned, unlike Alan. Alan's glad Buzz won't be his judge. "I do
have another child, that I didn't leave," says Buzz. "And I stood by &
watched the light go out of her eyes, & it was replaced by shame & guilt,
by a man who raped her. And you helped that man try to escape." Alan bows
his head momentarily, as if in shame, but comes right back. If Buzz has
such a low opinion of him, why did he take the $$ for 5th Street. [That's a
specious argument--Alan offered the money before anyone knew Lucy was raped
or that Alan was in cahoots with Brent.] Alex enters to break up the fight.
Both men tell her to get away. Alan wants to "step outside & settle things
man-to-man."

POLICE HQ: Tangie's ready to get started again. Nick asks the ADA to
confirm that Sid will go after every intimate detail of her relationship
with Alan. That & more, says Robertson. T doesn't think Sid is that
ruthless. Think again--Sid's being paid to get Alan off & his best bet is
to make Tangie look like a liar. T sticks to her guns--she knows what she
saw & heard & they can't change the facts. Robertson sets about proving her
wrong. Isn't it true that last winter she was on intimate terms with Alan's
son, the other material witness in this case? T says they were friends. R
says it was more. Why did they split up? After a long pause she answers,
"He had the mistaken idea that I was interested in Alan." R suggests the
idea wasn't mistaken at all & she'd settled on AM as a 2nd choice. T denies
this vehemently, but Robertson keeps at her, making her sound like a gold-
digger. Then he brings up the incident with Cutter jailing her & ending up
suspended. T tries to explain the truth, but R makes her look very bad.
She's on the verge of tears as R accuses her of playing father against son
& selling herself to the highest bidder. "That's crazy!" she shouts, & runs
out of the room. Nick & Robertson look defeated.

REGENCY: Blake knocks & calls to Rog. She asks him to open the door. In the
suite, Dinah wants to dress & escape before they get inside. Rog tells her
to get into bed--they don't need to make things easy. He assures her it
will be OK. She gets under the covers & Rog opens the door. He says it's
not a good time, but Ross & Blake won't leave. Ross enters & glares at
Dinah. Bravely, she says hi. Ross turns to Rog.

Rog isn't sure of the protocol--should he offer coffee? Ross throws Dinah's
dress at her & tells her to get dressed. He'll wait downstairs. Rog says
she should do what her dad says. Ross leaves to wait in the car. Blake
stays to talk to Rog. "Why?" she asks. Rog says he's not out to hurt
anybody. "But you are," she insists. He admits he's not perfect & maybe he
shouldn't have gotten involved with Dinah, "but you know what I was like
the night of the 5th St. ball." Blake is stunned to find out it's been
going on so long. Rog explains how Dinah helped him get over the loss of
Holly. "You liar!" she says with contempt.

MATT'S ROOM: Matt offers coffee, but Van's not interested. She says loving
Dinah isn't easy. Matt thinks maybe he was out of line. He doesn't know
what it's like to be a parent. "But you think she's right, don't you?" asks
Van. He doesn't think a child should have to earn her parents' love. It
should just be there. Van says Dinah has lied to her & hurt her at every
opportunity. "Am I just supposed to love her?" Matt shrugs. "Yeah, sure, I
guess I am. Love her no matter what." Matt says it's what every child
deserves. Van says he's right, but he doesn't understand because he's not a
parent. She thinks he should understand what it feels like to know you're
supposed to love someone but not be able to. Matt doesn't want to get into
his relationship with Sean.

DINER: Alex tells Alan to stay out of trouble & get out. If AM finds out
Alan is there, AM will never speak to him again. Alan warns Buzz not to
come between him & his son, then leaves. Alex apologizes for Alan. Buzz
says she shouldn't waste her time. She hands him a check for the 5th St.
rebuilding fund & he asks what her angle is. She says she wants to help
Frank & Eleni get their house finished. Buzz thanks her & offers a game of
hoops. Alex takes a rain check. She's glad they can count on each other.
"Is there something you want from me?" asks Buzz. Alex says it's important
for Alan to talk to his son. Buzz doesn't agree. She asks if he'll give AM
a message, then. "Tell him how much we miss him." Buzz looks at the check.
"Shame on you, Alex. You're trying to bribe me." Alex laughs. "Yes, I am.
Is it going to work?"

Buzz tears up the check & tells her not to insult him. Alex pleads for
Alan. Buzz says angrily that Alan just doesn't want AM to testify against
him. Alex says all the allegations against Alan are being brought by
Tangie. Buzz asks if Tangie invented the whole thing. Alex admits Alan was
involved with Brent, but he was actually "protecting" AM by keeping Brent
under control. T concocted the story to ruin Alan because she's a mean,
spiteful opportunist. Alex says AM has only heard T's side of the story &
should have the chance to talk to Alan. Buzz should know what it's like to
have his own son hate him. "Don't make me hate you," warns Buzz. "The man
helped the creep that raped my daughter get away. I will NOT forgive that
for anyone! You give up on him. He's going to go to prison." Buzz slams
down some dishes & walks out. Alex stares after him thoughtfully.

POLICE HQ: Tangie returns, but Robertson is gone. "When the going gets
tough, the tough get sick," she jokes. Nick says it's too bad the burden of
putting Alan away has fallen on her. She doesn't think her testimony & AM's
will be enough. "What happens if I testify & it's all for nothing?" Nick
says it's never for nothing when you stand up to Alan. He offers her a ride
home, but she says she'll be OK & leaves. Nick sighs.

MATT'S ROOM: Van says Matt's relationship with Sean is just like hers with
Dinah. Matt wants to love Sean but can't because Sean hurt him. Matt
suggests that maybe Dinah feels the same way about Van. Van feels Matt is
taking Dinah's side, but he says he can still be on Van's side even if he
doesn't always agree with her. Van thinks Matt is blaming her for giving
Dinah up, but he's just trying to give her some insight on how Dinah feels.
Van says she had no choice but to give Dinah up--it was just a mess & a
horrible mistake. Maybe that's how Dinah feels, says Matt. "Maybe she
thinks that you feel like she's just one big, huge, horrible mistake." Matt
apologizes & says he has to go. He promises to call Van later & leaves. She
stares at herself in the mirror.

BOARDINGHOUSE KITCHEN: Dinah & Ross enter. She asks if he's going to ground
her. Ross says he can't force her to do anything because she's of legal
age. Funny, it didn't seem that way back in Rog's room. Ross just wants to
keep her from making a mistake she'll regret forever. "If Roger's a
mistake, he's not my worst & at least he doesn't hate me like my whole
family does." Ross says they don't hate her, but they want her to grow up.
This is her chance. Dinah's trying to get a fresh start with Rog, but all
her parents want is for her to come crawling back, begging for forgiveness.
"At least he cares about how I live & the way I feel." Matt enters & Dinah
figures he's going to gang up on her too. Nope, he wants to stay out of it
& he leaves. Ross asks how he can get through to her. "You are asking me to
give up the one person who hasn't dumped me or judged me. The one person
who's willing to take me in after everyone else kicked me out." Ross asks
what Rog is offering. Food, shelter, clothes, commitment? "What are you
offering me?" Dinah counters.

Ross thinks Dinah's worldliness & sophistication is a cover. Dinah says she
is what she has to be. Ross feels guilty that he wasn't around to give her
a sense of values. Dinah says values are relative. Ross asks her to give up
Rog because he knows what happens to people who get too close to him.
Dinah's been on the run since she got to town & never gave herself a chance
to succeed & if she stays with Rog, she'll never get one. Dinah says she's
not naive. [Understatement of the year!] Ross says even Holly barely
survived. "She didn't appreciate him; I do." Ross just wants what's best
for Dinah. Dinah says what's best for her is to feel good & Rog does that
for her. Ross says Rog is just using her, but Dinah can't see what good she
could possibly do him. Ross knows Roger enough to know there's something.
Dinah says Rog knows her better than anyone in town & has never tried to
change her. "You're asking me to give that up for what?" All Ross can offer
is his love. Dinah says that's not enough, because she only gets his love
when she does what he wants. "And that price is just too high."

MATT'S ROOM: Van stares at herself in the mirror & sees herself holding
newborn Baby Dinah [played by a whopper kid of at least 6 months]. Van's
face is hidden by long hair, so most of the time we can't see that Young
Van is being played by a teen with a voice-over by Maeve Kinkead. She tells
the baby she can't keep her because she doesn't even know how to take care
of herself. She names the baby Dinah & vows to never forget her. A nurse
takes the baby away as tears roll down Young Van's face & she sniffles.
Fade back to realVan, eyes brimming & lip trembling.

ROG'S SUITE: Rog is deeply hurt by Blake's accusation. After losing Holly,
he deserves a chance for happiness with someone else. "Not Ross's
daughter," replies Blake. Why not? Ross found happiness with Rog's
daughter. Dinah's of age & she's warm & willing & thinks he's magnificent.
What's wrong with that? Rog thinks Holly has turned Blake against him, but
Blake won't let him throw her off track. Dinah's a little schemer, but
she's a rank amateur compared to Rog. "I'm finally getting to see how you
operate." Rog tells B to watch her mouth before she says something she
regrets. She asks if he ever regrets anything he does because it hurts
someone. Last night, she didn't see a man enjoying new happiness after a
lost love; she saw a man hell-bent on hurting as many people as possible,
including her. "You kissed Dinah in front of everybody. You provoked Ross
into hitting you, just so you could get even. You didn't care who you hurt.
You crossed the line, Dad. You blew it. I have always defended you, but not
this time. You hurt the man I love & you can't get away with that." She
turns away. Rog asks if she is taking Ross's side against him. "Yes, I am,"
she answers.

Rog says Blake loves him & he loves her. Blake says she'll always love Rog,
but she'll walk out of his life if he continues to hurt Ross. Rog doesn't
believe her, but Blake is adamant. "If you want me in your life, you have
to stop seeing her... It's up to you."

BOARDINGHOUSE KITCHEN: Ross grabs Dinah's arm to stop her from leaving.
Dinah says she's not trying to hurt Ross. "But love won't buy my clothes or
pay my rent." Ross says she can do that herself. Dinah says she's not cut
out to work hard, be good & have no fun. "You people want to starve me
while I'm living in a tent somewhere just to teach me a lesson." Ross says
that's not it at all. Dinah says she loves him & he's wonderful, but he's
asking her to give up something solid & for what? Ross asks why his love
isn't enough. "Maybe I didn't have it long enough for it to mean anything
to me," she says. "What about me?" asks Van, who has just walked in. "Does
my love mean anything to you?"

BOATHOUSE: Tangie turns around to find Alan in her house. She stares at him
across the room as the screen fades to black.
