From: "LANE A. HATFIELD" <lhatfiel@osf1.gmu.edu>

Hi, all!

I'm the second of the Gang of Three trying to fill the shoes of
the Joan The English Chick. My name is Lane Hatfield -- I'm a longtime
subscriber to the update list and a recent addition to the discussion
list. Sorry this update is so long, but I got so attached to some of the
dialogue that I wanted everyone to get the feel of the scenes. This is my
first update, so suggestions are welcome but please be gentle.

[btw, unless otherwise noted, the commercials aren't real -- although the
products are all GL sponsors]

Here goes nothing!

------------------Guiding Light Update Monday, July 24-----------------------
Journey to the Center of Alan Spaulding's Mind

CHEZ COOPER

Frank, Eleni, Buzz & Lucy toast: "To Alan Spaulding -- Long may he
rot in jail."
A-M busts in looking looking ticked. Alan may get off scot-free.
The DA says they have no proof, it would be A-M and Tangie's word against
Alan's, not enough to convict. (What a wuss DA, Ross woulda prosecuted!)

COUNTRY CLUB

Sid and Gilly continue to argue over his working for Alan.

Sid: Yes, Gilly, Alan is using me -- for my legal expertise. That's
          why people hire lawyers.
Gilly: Alan Spaulding is not people. (Then she calls his case
           "smarmy" -- ouch!)

Sid signed on for the whole package with Alan. Gilly worries Sid
will be changed. Sid claims Gilly doesn't trust him. Gilly claims that
she's seen Spaulding manipulation up close, she knows what it can do.

Sid: Don't ask me to choose between you and my job. You _will_
          regret it.

POLICE STATION

Tangie and Cutter are heading out for coffee to discuss the case and
whether her "testimony" is "worth something." :)
Cutter gets a call -- trouble in the holding cell, he has to get dow
there. Despite Cutter's express orders, Tangie Hill, girl reporter,
follows him and five officers to Alan's holding cell.

Alan throws a tantrum -- turns over the bed, throws his dinner and a
stool, shakes the bars and screams. All pretty realistic, Friday's
delusions seem to have passed.
Tangie reaches the cell. We get a semi-creepy shot of Alan's arm
reaching through the bars and past her.

ROLL LIGHTHOUSE

[Should a trucker smell like honeysuckle, or Ivory? Let's ask Nadine and
 Carroll!]

HOLDING CELL

Alan fights off 3 cops, including Cutter and starts running out of his
cell. Officer #4 tackles him and Alan hits his head on the bars. He's
knocked unconsious and falls to the floor as Tangie wails his name
piteously and ineffectively.

CHEZ COOPER

Lucy bemoans the fact that, just like with Brent, Alan will get off
for lack of evidence. Sweet, gentle Eleni admits to hating Alan:

Eleni: He has the who hurt Lucy hurt his own son! What kind of
            person is that?
A-M: My father's kind of person.
(One step up from Gilly -- at least they consider him a person :)

The Coopers psychoanalyze Alan -- Why'd he give A-M the Spaulding
presidency if he wanted it for himself? Is that how he gets his kicks? Or
did he just finally do one decent thing in his life and then couldn't
live up to it? Should they feel sorry for him?
A-M has no patience with "trying to shrink out" Alan. A-M has bought
into Alan's lies too many times. He has no sympathy and thinks Alan is a
crook who deserves to me in jail. Frank points out that the DA is
probably right, it'll be tough to convict Alan.
Buzz zand Frank decide to help out by looking for Cassie. They head
out for the motel where she was staying.

COUNTRY CLUB

Sid backs off from his "you _will_ regret it" stance. He tries to
reason with Gilly, draws parallel between his support of Gilly's LA job
and the support he wants from her now. She denies that it's the same
thing and brings up how Alan ruined her job in LA. Sid says they have no
proof Alan 86'ed her job. (Hasn't all this been said before?)
Gilly is worried Alan will steal Sid from her just like he stole her
job. She claims he's losing his soul to Alan.

[Maybe Rick had AT&T. He could't take the time to tell Ed about Annie
 because of those high rates!]

HOLDING CELL

Cutter and another cop lean over an unconscious Alan.

     Tangie: What was Alan thinking?
Cutter: Last prisoner I knew who did this... ended up hanging
             himself in his cell.
(Very comforting, Patrick. What're you _trying_ to make her hysterical?)

Paramedics arrive and cart Alan off to Cedars. Cutter goes with them
to guard Alan.
Tangie calls Alex, who is pretty rude to T. at first. Tangie fills
Alex in and suggests that Alan will need Alex at the hospital.

MOTEL

Frank charms Dawn, the motel maid, while Buzz checks out Cassie's old
room. They give Dawn a lousy cover story about being friends of Cassie's
named "Georgie" (Frank) and "Harry" (Buzz) who are looking for something she
left behind.

CHEZ COOPER

Eleni worries again about Frank becoming a cop. Then leaves A-M and
Lucy alone while she goes down to help Stavros.
A-M and Lucy discuss their families. The Coopers would do anything for
each other -- the Spauldings would do anything _to_ each other.
Lucy joins the bandwagon and admits to hating Alan. She wishes she
could tell Alan off for not appreciating A-M.
A-M tells lucy he loves her. Then when she smiles he notes that when
she's really happy her eyes laugh before her mouth even opens. (I love
this man!) He wants to devote more time to her, go rollerblading (He
doesn't know how, she promises to teach him).

A-M: We aren't gonna solve all the problems of the world.
Lucy: We're not? Whose gonna do it if we're not?

(This is actually a cute, seemingly improvised, little remark. And
afterall, if two 20-somethings who don't even have college degrees can
run Spaulding Enterprises, what'll they do in their 30's?)

He asks if it's okay to kiss her.

HALFTIME

[Does Rick Hearst use Aquafresh Whitening or Rembrandt?]

CHEZ COOPER

Lucy and A-M kiss on the couch. Eleni walks in but goes back out
without being seen.
A-M backs off -- wants to be sure he isn't going too fast. Lucy
assures him he's not. She looks like she wants to believe what she's
saying, but part of her still seems nervous.

MOTEL

"Georgie" continues to charm Dawn, who notices that "Harry" is
gone. Frank yells for Buzz, who comes out of Cassie's room. Dawn isn't
fooled by their stories, but lets it go b/c she wants to meet
"Georgie" again. She tells Frank that she gets off work soon and can
even find a friend for "the old guy."
Frank tries to bribe Dawn into letting them search the dumpster.
She laughs and tells him to put his money away, then leaves.

Buzz: Why Georgie, where did you get your technique?
Frank: Just from an old guy I know.

JOURNAL

Nick is finishing up a piece on Alan for which they're holding the
morning edition. Tangie tells him he'll have to rewrite it (this gets
quite a negative reaction from Nick :). She fills him in on Alan's fit
and subsequent move to the hospital. Based on Cutter's earlier
insensitive remarks, Tangie reports that Alan has been placed under a
"suicide watch." We hear this in voice-over as we see a shot of Alan
lying in a hospital bed with restraints on his arms, legs and chest.

HOSPITAL

Alex demand to see Alan. She argues with Cutter and threatens to
call her good friend the police chief. She finally forces her way into
Alan's room just as he's waking up. He whimpers "Alex, help me."

[Commercial break, but not one that fits any GL folks :( Just an
unnecessary Y&R clip showing Brad's pecks. Please.]

HOSPITAL

In the hallway outside Alan's room, Alex yells at Cutter over her
brother's treatment at the police station. Then she turns on Ed,
reminding him that she's on the hospital board and can "make his life
extremely difficult."
Ed calmly tells her that if she wants to find out what happened
she'll have to shut up (go Ed!) and listen to Cutter. Ed and Cutter then
explain Alan's episode and that the restraints are to keep Alan from
hurting himself. Alex can stay with him if she promises not to agitate him.
Alex goes in to see Alan and promises to stay with him.

COUNTRY CLUB

Sid and Gilly again. About Alan again. Gilly wants Sid away from
Alan, Sid wants to do his job. She walks away, nothing is resolved.

JOURNAL

Nick calls the hospital for info on Alan. He leaves a message for
Ed.
Tangie worries about Alan and what she did. Nick assures her she did
the right thing -- Alan brought on his own problems. He asks if Tangie is
thinking about not testifying against Alan. She doesn't answer.

[The Coopers as another Tylenol Extended Relief family.]

JOURNAL

Nick reminds Tangie that Alan is a great actor and manipulator and
wonders whether or not Alan staged his own breakdown. Tangie is sure he
didn't. Nick reminds her that, staged or not, the breakdown doesn't mean
Alan is innocent. Tangie admits she believed Alan had changed because of
her (how many other women have already been arrogant enough to believe
that?).

HOSPITAL

Alex wants someone to remove Alan's restraints. Sister and brother
remember how Brandon used to lock Alan in the dark pantry to punish him
and make a man of him, and how Alex always stayed outside the door and
never left him. She promises she won't leave him now.
Shot of Alex's hand caressing Alan's fades into shot of A-M's hand
caressing Lucy's cheek. An odd and disturbing comparison.

CHEZ COOPER

Eleni interrupts Lucy and A-M's make-out session on the couch to
bring them dinner. They profess they aren't hungry and will in fact be
leaving right now. (hey kids, where's the fire?)
There's some discussion of where Lucy will be spending the night,
with Eleni staunchly in favor of the boardinghouse as opposed to the
yacht. A-M goes for the car while Lucy decides.
Lucy tells Eleni she and A-M are in love. Eleni wants to talk about
being sensible and responsible -- have they slept together yet?

[If we must have a Monistat commercial, can't it be the one with Liz
 Kiefer?]

CHEZ COOPER

Lucy says they haven't slept together, but she doesn't want to talk
-- she's tired of talking. Eleni wants to be sure A-M isn't pushing Lucy
and wants Lucy to consider counseling.
A-M comes back, but Lucy is no longer in the mood. She asks to be
taken back to the boardinghouse. They leave and Eleni pulls out a
pamphlet on AIDS. (Please, Please, no AIDS storyline for Lucy!)

MOTEL

Frank and Buzz go through the garbage. They find a car rental
brochure indicating Cassie came to and left Springfield in a rental car
from Gary, Indiana. (Which Frank says they can get to by morning! Another
location clue!)

JOURNAL

Nick leaves Tangie looking at a mock-up of tomorrow's front page. She
broods over the cover story on Alan.

HOSPITAL

Alex blames Tangie for Alan falling into his old habits. He insists
she's wrong. Alex pleads with Ed, who finally takes off Alan's
restraints. Alan says he can't go back to prison. Alex promises she won't
let that happen, they'll look back on this someday as a trial that made
them stronger. Spauldings never accept defeat.

ROLL CREDITS

That's all folks. Hope it wasn't too, too long. See you in 3 weeks.
