I missed the very first set of scenes (the ones before the opening credits)
but other than that everything's here. This is my first time doing an
update, so be kind! :) And thanks, Allison, for passing this along to
the newsgroup; I hope to have a full connection soon. I've rambled long
enough, so without further ado, I give you....

Cedars (the break room?)
------------------------
Josh and Rick are talking about Annie's past relationship with Rick.
Josh says he's fine with it and Rick looks satisfied until he continues
that he knows Annie dated others before him. Josh tells Rick that he and
Annie are getting married and hopes that they can all be friends, adding
that he "just wanted to get everything out in the open, you know, let you
know that I know."

Annie comes into the room, interrupting their conversation, and tells Josh
that Marah's been looking all over for him. Rick tells Annie that Josh
just told him that he knows all about them, that she had told Josh about
how they had _dated_. Though he speaks casually, Rick's expression is
serious and he looks at her expectantly. She hesitates, glancing from
Rick to Josh who purses his lips thoughtfully (he may be slow, but
apparently Josh isn't completely dense!)

Slow pan of Bridget from her feet to her head (cute outfit -- blue jean
cutoffs and colorful butterflies on a black shirt) as she spins trying
to remember some dance steps David had taught her. David comes in from
outside, looking grim, and heads straight for the fridge. Jet asks if
he's thought of being a dance teacher. David moodily snaps that it's
not exactly what he'd had in mind as his life's work. He doesn't think
he has a future. He's apparently been out job hunting (remember Frank's
closed down the detective agency) and he's been turned down because: no
college degree, he's overqualified, he's had too many different jobs in
the last 6 months, he's "insufficiently diversified", and his last
interviewer said he was "perfect for the job but that her partner had
just hired his cousin."

Jet tries to cheer him up, saying that anyone with half a brain can see
that he's a catch and that "the wrong door has to close before the right
door can open." "Who said that?" David asks, wincing. "My Aunt Nola."
(Gee, is this a subtle hint that maybe Nola's coming back? ;) ) Jet
continues trying to give him a pep talk, finally getting exasperated with
him and telling him to quit pouting, things just can't be that bad!

"Yeah, you're right," David says dryly, looking behind her at the door,
"Actually things could get a lot worse." The camera shifts to show
David's mother, Viviane, coming in, impeccably dressed and coiffed.

Spaulding mansion, Alan's bedroom
---------------------------------
Buzz has burst in to find Alan and Tangie in bed together (now I'm sorry
I missed the opening scenes! Did Buzz say anything pithy in it?) He
launches into a tirade at Alan for not doing anything while their kids
are in hot water. Alan tells him sharply that the police are handling
it, then adds that he's also hired his own investigators to find Brent,
which makes Buzz angry because he wasn't told anything about it earlier.

Tangie asks that the conversation be continued later so that she can get
dressed. "Who's stopping you?" Buzz throws at her. (LOL!) "You are!"
Tangie snaps back. Dressed in a robe, she hops out of the bed and goes
to the (open) door to pick her clothes up from the floor. Alexandra
appears in the doorway and looks at the bentover Tangie. "Well, how
unusual. It's morning and we still have a moon," Alex quips with dry
sharpness, looking at Tangie with distaste. (Sic her, Al!!)

Alan demands that both Buzz and Alex leave. Buzz vents a little more
about Alan's private investigators then stalks out, pausing to ask Tangie
how he could have been so wrong about her. Alex says she's not leaving
until Alan tells her what's going on. Through tightly gritted teeth,
the Spaulding sibs exchange 'pleasantries'.
Alan: "It's none of your business and you stay out of this."
Alex: "Like it or not, big brother, it _is_ my business. I am in this.
Whatever you're doing, not doing, with, for, or about Brent Lawrence, it
affects me. And, brother, tit for tat, you don't obviously care at all
that it affects me. Because alive or dead, I think that man is going to
hurt you. And you know what I think? I don't care any more!!"

Frank is talking to Cutter about applying to the police training program.
Cutter questions his motives and cautions him to think hard about the
probable cost to his marriage and family. Though it obviously hurts to
speak about it, Cutter tells Frank that his own marriage "it didn't...it
couldn't last, it...anyway, it just couldn't take the pressure. And it
could happen to you too." Frank blithely assures Cutter that it won't
because a lot of things have already happened to he and Eleni, and they've
made it through them.

Cutter tries again, telling him that Frank can forget about appreciation,
that cops are a target for all the anger out there. He points to the
black armband he's wearing. "You know what this is? It's a guy just
like you, who wanted to change the world. The only thing he changed is
that now there's a little girl that doesn't have a father any more."
Frank tries to explain why -- that nothing has felt so right before (as
this decision), that he's felt helpless and powerless to help all the
people he's seen hurt, he wants to turn things around so that his daughter
can feel safe, he really wants to make a difference.

"Don't say I didn't try to talk you out of it," Cutter tells him, holding
out the application form. Eleni appears behind them and grabs the form
before Frank can. "You can't talk him out of it, but maybe I can," she
says with determination.

Annie nervously breaks the tension by asking if anyone wants some coffee
as she fumbles with the pot. Josh comments that this is very strange and
asks if something went on in Chicago between Rick and Annie that he should
know about. Annie quickly chatters too brightly over the top of Josh,
telling him about Marah while Rick looks on in silent sadness, as though
he's been let down. (Annie, *how* can you be so cruel to such a sweet guy
as Rick?!?) Josh leaves to take Marah on a 'goodbye' round of the hospital
staff.

Annie relucantly faces Rick. "You're mad at me."
"Oh, I'm way past that, Annie. I've held this in for weeks. I've
held this in for months and I've had it. I'm tired, I'm just tired of
ducking from the truth. I'm tired of standing by and watching you lie.
I'm just...no more. If you don't tell him the truth today, I'm going to
do it."
With a hint of desparation, Annie protests, "No, no, don't, Rick. I just
need some more time."
"TIME? For what, Annie? What happened, happened. It's not going to
change anything if you tell him today, or tomorrow, or next year."
"I'm just not ready yet. Josh and I have been going through some
difficult times lately, and I just need a chance to be able to..."
"Chance?! Annie, c'mon, you've had dozens of chances. Why are you
trying to sweep me under the rug like I'm nothing? Like I'm some damn
dustball you're trying to hide from everyone?"
"Look, I'm just trying to find the words."
"They're _simple_ words, Annie. If you don't find a way to tell him,
I will. We weren't 'dating', Annie, we were _married_." (!!!!!)

Alan directs Donna to take some of Tangie's belongings up to her
dressing room. Tangie hears this and is mildly offended at Alan's
resumption at taking (yet further! ;) ) 'liberties'. She explains
that just because they made love, it doesn't mean that she's moving in.
He tries to get out of it by saying he was only trying to make her stay
(until Brent is caught) more comfortable. Tangie lays down the law --
Alan is not allowed to run her life or make her decisions, even if last
night was wonderful. (Gag!) Tangie reassures Alan that she won't let
anyone come between them, that the police will capture Brent and then
the danger to everyone will be over. She leaves while Alan looks
unconvinced and worried.

Jet paces while Viviane tries to convince David to come to an early
lunch at the Club to discuss his future career plans with her. He's less
than enthused about this and Viv, in her coolly condescending way,
suggests that David apply for school again. She was soooo disappointed
when he dropped out of pre-law before but perhaps Ross would be willing
to hire him again if he goes back. She and his father will naturally
contribute part of his tuition (which is also a vote of confidence in
his future) and when it comes time for David to choose a firm, well, his
father does have excellent connections.

David refuses to play 'polite' and snaps that his mother should go to
law school herself and stop planning his life for him. With or without
her permission, he intends to live his own life. (I miss Monti. This
NewDavid is still awkward with the lines and he's being entirely too much
of a one-note 'angry young man'. The actor needs to bring more depth
to the character if he hopes to click with our Jet!)

They argue and David spills the beans about what his father told him
about his mother's youth growing up in the South, marching with the
civil rights workers for the right to go to school, to sit at a lunch
counter or in the front of a bus. When she asks if he hates her, David
says no, but that he's confused. She asks him to forget about her past
and David says that he's not about to forget about the one thing he
respects about her. He wants to understand it. "How can I connect
that young, brave girl who had courage, principles and a sense of
purpose with this controlling, manipulative, insensitive woman standing
before me now?"

Eleni is angry at Frank because he has apparently already made up his
mind about being cop, that he's made a major decision without her, yet
again. Frank tries to get her to go somewhere else to talk about it
but Eleni won't budge. She asks if his family could stop him from
trying to become a cop. Frank doesn't think it's a big deal, after all,
there's already a cop in the family.
"I'm not married to your sister, Frank." :)
"Eleni, if I decide that this is something I should do...I mean..."
"If YOU decide...? _WE_ were going to decide. Frankie, you are not
going to be the one waiting up every night wondering if you are going
to come home. Or explain to Marina why her father can't be there to
read her a bedtime story."
"A lot of these guys have families, Eleni. It means moer money, it's
stable, there's health insurance..."
"And it's more _danger_. I don't need more money, I need _you_,
beside me, _safe_."
Frank just wants Marina to be proud of her father and Eleni returns,
"I just want Marina to _have_ a father."

Annie is convinced that Josh will hate her for not telling him sooner.
(Huh?? Why is it such a horrible thing that she was married to Rick?
What, did he take up being an axe murderer as a hobby while he was in
Chicago?) She babbles that she was a lousy wife, that she screwed
everything up, that everything went to hell because of her. Rick gets
even angrier at her and finally yells that she should at least give
Josh a chance.
"I can't," Annie says brokenly, holding back tears.
"Annie," Rick asks gently, "when are you going to learn to give the
people who love you a choice? If they really love you, they're going
to understand."
"Rick, I'm thinking of you too."
"That's not your job any more, Sweetheart. It's not just about you
and me. It's about Josh, his kids, my father, people who I really,
really care about. I don't like living this lie any more than you do,
especially with my father."
  "I'm scared."
Rick's getting frustrated (rightfully so, IMHO) "Is it really so
damn hard for you to admit that there was another man in your life?
I loved you, Annie Dutton, I loved you. And I know you loved me.
Is that so damn hard for you to admit?"

Frank tells Cutter that he's going to take the test. Buzz appears
and demands to know if there's anything new about Brent. He spouts
off about Alan's investigators and when Cutter asks why Alan would
hire them, Buzz suggests it was to impress his new girlfriend.
Cutter says that Tangie's too smart for that and Buzz almost
gleefully reveals that Tangie "dropped her pen, her hair, just
about everything and succumbed to the old Spaulding charm, if you
know what I mean."

Cutter looked as though he were tasting something bad and told the
Coopers to leave. Buzz then asked Cutter what he thought women saw
in Alan. "Do you think it's just the money?"

Spaulding mansion (Break out the cream!! Much cattiness ahead!)
-----------------
Alex and Alan continue their verbal sparring, with Alex warning
Alan (again) that he's making a serious mistake with Tangie. Their
argument escalates until you can all but see them scoring points off
of each other.
Alex: "I'm not tolerating you bedding that woman under this roof."
Alan: "This is my house too and I'm not going to tolerate the
ranting of some woman who is angry about her ex-lover marrying
someone else!"
"How do you think your little sex kitten is going to feel when she
knows how cozy you are with Brent Lawrence? A rapist, a man who held
a gun to her head. What do you think, she's going to find that mildly
amusing? Maybe she'll find it interesting enough to write a little
article about it. And how's your son going to react, huh? My guess
is he's going to boot you out of the company and out of his life."
"Alex, I love Alan-Michael and I love Tangie."
"And I don't think either one of them is going to buy that any
more than I do," Alex purrs.
"Neither you nor Brent Lawrence is going to make me lose them, and
I'll tell you something else, Alex. I'm not going to end up like
you -- old, alone, and miserable, with nothing else to do but
destroying other people's happiness. _Alone_, Alex. The one thing you
have feared all your life. That is what you're going to be."

He leaves Alex alone with her thoughts, briefly, until Tangie enters
looking for Alan. Alex invites Tangie in for a little chat, saying
she might even give her the 'inside scoop' on her brother.

[commercial break]

Tangie doesn't want to talk about Alan, she wants to apologize for the
'scene' earlier this morning and hopes that they can put the awkwardness
behind them. Alex declares that _she_ doesn't feel the least bit
awkward.
Tangie, puzzled: "You don't like me."
Alex, smooth as cream: "How _very_ perceptive." LOL!

Tangie wants to be Alex's friend; she's always admired Alex and wants
to know why Alex doesn't like her.
"I don't trust you, Tangie. I don't think you care about my brother
at all. Oh, yes, sleep with him. But I don't think you really care
about him. I think you're using him."
  "For what?"
"His name, his money, his power, his connections. And don't dare
lie to me and say those things don't impress you."
"I am impressed, but I don't go to bed with somebody because I'm
impressed by them. I like Alan. I think there's more to Alan than most
people see."
Alex erupts into a burst of sarcastic laughter. "Yes, there is another
side to Alan that he rarely shows to anyone else. I'm just afraid that
you and I are looking at an entirely _other_ other side."

Boarding house kitchen
----------------------
Jet pours out iced tea for David and his mother before going into
Company to give them privacy to continue their talk. Viviane comments
that Bridget is much nicer than she had thought. (Hmm, how unlike
Viv to say something positive about one of David's friends!)

David tells his mother that all his life she's tried to change him
into something he's not, something that he's not comfortable with, but
that it makes sense now that he's seen what she's done to herself. He
asks if, deep down inside, she believes that who they are just isn't
good enough.

Viv says that's just not true. David demands to know why she acts
the way does then, why she seems to believe that to get by in life
you have to change yourself into what someone else thinks is acceptable.
If she can live with herself doing that, then fine, but it's not who
he is and nothing that she says or does is going to change him, twist
him into her image of a perfect son.

She's listened to him very calmly and now Viv shows some attitude back
at him. "You may think I've sold out, but let me share something with
you about myself. One of the reasons that young, idealistic woman
disappeared was that she learned the hard way that it takes more than
anger and idealism to get through life. Anger works when you're
young, and idealism mixed with energy and innocence works a little
while longer. But when you have a home and a family and people to
take care of, they wear thin. 'Compromise' may be a dirty word to
you but in the end it's either that or nothing at all. One more thing,
David. I do have regrets about my life but I know _what_ I did and I
know _why_ I did it. Can you say the same?"

Viv leaves and Jet comes back in from Company, looking emotionally
wrung out. (Viv's last speech hit a few too many chords with Jet,
maybe?) David at first tells her not to say anything, then changes
his mind. Jet tells him that he doesn't have to agree with his
parents' choices and he doesn't have to do the same things they did.
He should use his anger to work for him, he should do whatever makes
him happy because that's all that matters in the end.

Annie argues that she's trying to move on, to start a new life, to
forget about the person she used to be. Rick tells her that she
should start her new life today -- by telling Josh the truth.

Josh knocks and comes in, explaining that Marah's having lunch with
her pals in pediatrics. He asks how things are going, if they're
straightening things out, if they need him to throw in his two cents.
Babblin' Annie changes the subject and hurries Josh out the door,
saying they should have that picnic with Marah that they've been
wanting to have for weeks now. Josh seems reluctant but allows her
to pull him out of the room while Rick shakes his head, disappointed
yet again in Annie.

Spaulding mansion
-----------------
Tangie prompts Alex to tell her about Alan but Alex changes her mind
and brushes aside the request, saying she has a lot of things to
take care of today. Tangie says that she wouldn't have believed
Alex anyway because "bitterness has a way of making people say
certain things." Alex wishes Tangie good luck, "When you get to
know my brother a little better you're going to need it."

Some unknown restaurant
-----------------------
Alan waits alone at a secluded table. Brent's sister, Cassie, arrives
and says she doesn't know if she can trust him -- her brother told her
how Alan had used him and betrayed him.

Alan suggests that she at least hear him out. He wants her to help
him find Brent and then he'll prove that Brent is wrong about him.
He'll make it worth her while if she helps him....

---------
And that's all they showed! (Hope I wasn't too heavy on the dialogue
but I couldn't resist. Rick and Alex both had excellent performances
today!!)
