***********************!!!!HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!************************

*****************GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE FOR TUESDAY, JULY 4, 1995**************

*****************************************************************************

VANESSA'S BEDROOM (Morning)

We open to Vanessa and Matt smooching. Vanessa is caressing Matt's
bandage and saying how glad she is that he's alright. Apparently they
have no morning breath in Springfield because they are nose to nose and
Matt says "it's better than the alternative." Vanessa slugs him in the
bandage and says not to even joke about that. The bedroom door opens and
Matt scrambles to cover his nakedness. It's Dinah (she's already seen it
all, Matt!) Dinah has thoughtfully brought the couple a tray of coffee
thinking that they might need a little stimulation this morning. She
starts to leave and Van actually holds open her arms and says "come here."
Vanessa invites her daughter to come sit on her bed while her naked lover
is lying there with his mouth agape. Thankfully there are no wet spots in
soapland! Vanessa and Dinah embrace and coo about how glad they are to
have each other and that Dinah's okay.

BOBALOO! (FLETCHER'S PLACE)
Fletch is lamenting about being rooked by the tux place. It seems that
they've sent him a ruffled shirt when he ordered a pleated one. Nick
tries to reassure him that that's why they ordered things a day early, to
check the sizes, etc. and Fletch gets in some really funny lines about not
being the tango type ("mombo maybe" says Nick.) Fletch calls the shirt a
"Ricky Ricardo Rumpled Reject" and Nick gets him to try on the jacket
(with his plaid flannel boxers.) Ben comes downstairs wielding a "script"
that his Dad has thoughtfully written and taped to his mirror.
Apparently, Ben is supposed to fake out Alexandra to throw her off the
wedding trail but Ben doesn't think that "subterfuge" is typical
15-year-old lingo. He argues that he can handle things and ad-lib his own
lines. Fletch is uncomfortable with that idea but doesn't have time to
argue because there's a knock at the back door. SURPRISE! It's Alex. The
guys scramble to hide all the tuxes and wedding stuff.

HOLLY'S PLACE
Strings play softly as Holly (dressed in a robe) preens in front of the
mirror. She tries on her delicate peach wedding veil and turns her head
from side to side. She doesn't notice Blake standing in her doorway until
Blake demands: "MOM! YOU TELL ME IT'S NOT TRUE!"

ROLL LIGHTHOUSE!!

BAUER BURGER BARN
Ed is hanging streamers for the annual 4th of July Picnic when his step
ladder slips and he's left hanging. (Hello??? Dr. Ed??? Aren't more than
75% of all household injuries caused by doing just that???!?!?!?!?)
Thankfully, Alan Michael arrives to rescue Ed. (Updater's note:
apparently the GL staff barber was in over the weekend as both Alan
Michael and Fletcher are sporting fresh cuts. Rick Hearst (AM) has his
sides trimmed shorter than usual revealing the beginnings of some grey
around the temples. Adds a nice "distinguished" look for Spaulding's
Prez.) Ed seems somewhat surprised that his great nephew has come this
year and AM says that he wouldn't consider missing a Bauer 4th picnic. He
wields a camcorder and shoots some vid of Ed. AM asks "Where are all
those noble Bauers? The family legions? The hundred percent Bauers, half
Bauers, the Bauer pretenders and the downright Bauer-wannabes?" Ed
answers "I will cook it, they will come," and adds that they're also
having fajitas this year in addition to the famous Bauer burgers (tm)! AM
wonders where cousin Rick is (since he's in charge of the Guacamole,) and
it seems that Rick had an emergency surgery at the hospital and will be
over later. AM asks where Michelle is and Ed replies "She's 'abroad'
attending rapid aging school in 'Europe.' She should be back within the
next six months having reached the required teen-soap age of 17. She'll
probably have had a secret baby by then so that it can be revealed 10
years down the road the next time we need a 17 year old! (You know, like
Dinah Marler!)" Actually, it seems that Michelle is in Paris and will be
home in a couple of weeks. Ed says Jet's around and Blake should be over
in a couple of minutes. AM asks Ed to give him orders and he will follow
them. Ed asks where Lucy is and AM says she's probably with her family
he's giving her a break from him today. Ed observes that AM really wishes
Lucy was there and AM does this funny little fake-weeping "YES!" Ed says
he read about the stuff that happened and asks if AM's alright. (Sorry I
didn't check sooner, I had a picnic to plan!) AM says that the hardest
part is not knowing and that he thinks that Brent is dead but doesn't
really know. He says that's not what they are there for though and Ed
agrees that they should concentrate on food and badminton, etc. AM again
asks what he can do and by some amazing twist of fate, Ed Bauer actually
succeeds in getting Alan Michael Spaulding, President and CEO of the
international conglomerate known as Spaulding Enterprises to clean the
bugs out of his pool filter. Ed gazes reflectively at the hot tub as
guitars gently strum the chords to the GL theme.

NICK, FLETCH & BEN'S BACHELOR FUNPAD:
Nick opens up the door and exclaims "MOM!" Alex has dropped by to
deliver some of Ginger's famous fried chicken (tm) to take to the
Bauer's picnic. Nick asks why she's not going to the picnic and it seems
Alex has a date w/ Englishman & longtime family friend Desmond Arthur.
Nick encourages her to bring her date to the picnic to show him how the
4th is celebrated in the US. When this technique fails, Alex asks Nick to
give Ed her regards. Nick suggests that they all really need to support Ed
right now in light of his recent loss. Alex still seems unconvinced so
Nick, in true Spaulding fashion, manipulates Alexandra's motherly instincts
by saying that he wants to meet this guy. He says "if this guy wants to
make time with my mother he needs to know he needs to go through me
before he gets to my mother." Alex seems to relent and asks Fletcher if
he's going. Fletch says yes, he and Ben are both going to show up and Ben
just looks pissed and uneasy. Alex says that she'll be there and they all
think that's great. Ben suddenly explodes shouting "that's great, just
great! Why don't you all just party 'til you drop? See if I care what you
do with your stupid life!" He slams his fist down on the table and storms
out of the room. Everyone looks startled and Alex asks if there's a
problem she can help with. Fletch and Nick assure her that everything is
fine. Alex looks unconvinced.

GOIN' TO THE CHAPEL AND I'M GONNA' GET GUILT-TRIPPED (Holly's place.)
Blake charges in looking half-drunk like a woman possessed. She says "The
veil. Tell me it's not what I think it is." Holly stammers about how she
keeps getting wedding things delivered to her that should be going to
someone named "Linley." Blake sees through the subterfuge and tells her
to stop lying. Blake confronts Holly about not realling breaking up with
Fletcher and the staged fights. Holly admits that she's marrying Fletcher
and that they've been planning it for weeks, she tries to tell Blake how
happy she is but Blake recoils as if she's been shot. She looks like
she's going to be ill. Blake steadies herself on the sofa and asks why
she wasn't told. Holly says she couldn't risk Roger finding out because
he'd do something destructive. Holly begs her not to tell him. An
incredulous Blake states "You were going to marry Fletcher than you were
going to show up here and announce that I had a new stepfather?" Holly
insists that she was going to tell her right at the last minute *before*
the wedding. Holly insists that Blake is wanted at the wedding and that
she wouldn't exclude her from something so important in her life. Blake
says she doesn't know when to believe her and suggests that Holly's only
saying that because she's been caught. She says that she doesn't like
Fletcher and that they all know it. Holly says that she wants Blake to be
a part of her wedding but more importantly, she wants her to be happy for
them. She asks Blake to please try to understand how much she and
Fletcher love each other and how happy they are. Blake looks wounded.

VANESSA'S ROOM

Vanessa, Matt & Dinah are sitting in bed (gorsh this is strange!) Matt
looks like he'd give anything to have a pair of boxers within arms reach
and mother/daughter are chatting with their arms around each other. Van
asks how D slept and she says that she was pretty keyed up but that it
was wonderful having Bill and Peter and V&M just down the hall. She says
she really felt like she was at home. Van insists that she is home and
Dinah says she really felt like this was her home, a place where she felt
safe and wanted. She says she's never had a place like that before. Van
aknowledges that D's never had a real place to call home and asks her to
come live there. Dinah looks surprised and says "Really?" Matt looks even
more comfortable. Vanessa says "Yes. Really. We've just lost so much time
you and I, and maybe we can get some of it back....." Vanessa suddenly
becomes a real sap babbling on about the two of them going for walks,
shopping, browsing through a bookstore, renting videos, making popcorn
and doing things together that families do. I think if it weren't for
Matt still lying naked in the bed that they might have actually talked
about freshness and feminine protection! They both giggle weepily and
Dinah agrees to move in. They hug and kiss and Matt tells them to stop
before he gets out the baby oil and has a mother-daughter sandwich!
(Sorry...sorry...slipping into Zena there I think!) Dinah gets up and
says she's heading over to Ed's early to soak up some rays (with that
complexion? Try SPF 45!) and that she'll see them there. After she's gone
Vanessa sighs and asks "Was that really my daughter? She was so sweet.
Maybe she's really learned something Matt." Matt says "Maybe." Vanessa
says "Maybe we can b e a family, maybe we can be happy." Matt kisses her
and nibbles her ear. (I'll show ya' happy....hehhehheh!)

DOWNSTAIRS AT THE LEWIS/CHAMBERLAIN/ETC. PAD....

The camera pans away from a photo of Dinah in a cheerleading uniform.
(Where was this? Certainly not in Springfield! Did she cheer for Paris
Art Institute?) Ross is gazing lovingly at the collection of Chamberlain
family photos on the wall and chuckling. "Dinah!" he exclaims as she
decents the stairs. He's come to make sure she's safe and that she slept
well. Dinah says she keeps thinking of the look on his face when she came
into the police station. He says that he was worried about her. She goes
on about how much she thought about he and "mother" while "chained to the
sofa in that filthy basement place." She asks him how she happened to be
released before Matt. Ross pauses a second and explains that Cutter
bargained for the release of one of the hostages and then asked them to
decide who to release first. Dinah says "You mean Mother chose me over
Matt? That's incredible!" Ross smiles weakly and says "Well, for a
parent, there couldn't have been any other choice." They embrace and Ross
look somewhat guilty.

HOLLY'S PLACE
Blake asks Holly outright: "When is the wedding? Where?" Holly remains
silent and Blake laughs "That's right, you can't trust me with the
information that you can give Ed and even Nick." Holly says "I'm sorry,
but I can't, not yet." "And you want me to be happy for you?" asks Blake,
shaking her head. "I *HATE* Roger that he does this to us!" shouts Holly.
"OH! Blame it on Dad," Retorts Blake "Everybody else does!" As Blaker
starts to leave Holly explains how Roger's tried everything possible to
break she and Fletcher up. Blake says there's nothing werong with that
because he still loves her. Holly says she can't risk Blake telling her
father because he'll disrupt it at the very least. She says she's never
had a wedding exactly the way she wanted it and asks Blake if she can
promise that she wouldn't tell Roger. Blake starts to storm out but runs
into....ROGER!

HALFTIME!!!!

FLETCH'S PLACE
Nick & Fletch sigh collectively and wonder if Alex will take the bait at
the picnic. Ben swings in demanding an oscar nomination for his
performance with Alex and Fletch says that table slamming wasn't in his
script. Ben says he knows, but that it was good! He says he stayed up all
night working the kinks out of his routine and that he knows how to act
and speak better than "you old guys." He tosses his script away under
Fletcher's protests. Ben tells him not to take it personally, it was a
nice try but next time he needs to get the words right..."Subterfuge?
Please!" he says. Fletch tells Ben he doesn't mind him thinking on his
feet but that he doesn't know where this is all going to end up. Ben
tells him not to worry. "I know." says Ben as he exits telling the fellas
he'll see them at the party. Fletch turns on Nick shouting "YOU! You
created this monster!"

HOLLY'S PLACE
Roger apologises for dropping by and asks if it's a bad time as he lets
himself in. Holly says it is rather a bad time because she's peeling kiwi
for the fruit salad she's taking to Ed's and Rog says that's why he's
here. He says that for the first time ever he was invited to the Bauer
picnic (must have been because of his rescuing Matt & Dinah speculates
Blake,) and wonders if it's okay with her if he goes. Holly is
completely unaware of what happened with Victor even though the story
was on the front page of her own paper. She explains that she hasn't
been keeping up because of taking some personal time off. Rog hopes
everything is okay and Holly gives her okay for him to go to Ed's bash.
Rog promises not to cause trouble and says he'll see them there. Rog
leaves and loyal viewers wonder how this ex-CIA agent didn't manage to
see the veil, wedding dress, purse & shoes lying in the middle of the
living room floor before he left! Blake collapses on the sofa and Holly
thanks her for not telling Rog about the wedding. Blake holds her face in
her hands and says "This is so sad. I can't bear it."

BEGINNINGS OF A BIG BAUER BACKYARD BARBECUE BASH!!
Ed fishes a diet ginger ale (yes, I froze frame to read the can! I wanted
to make sure it wasn't a zima or something!) and announces that the first
round of hamburgers, (don't you mean BAUER BURGERS <tm>?!?!) hotdogs and
fajitas are ready and instructs everyone to come eat. Lillian, like a
good nurse, is assisting Dr. Ed by holding a tray of burgers. (Side note:
Lillian is looking really good in some funky shades and a sundress...she
needs a *MAN*!!!) Ed is muttering about needing Rick's help and David
blows his line about Rick phoning to say he's still stuck at the
hospital. David continues blowing lines about assembling his volleyball
team and challenging Alan Michael to a game. Lo and behold, Lucy shows up
saying it was a beautiful day so she decided to come. "Besides," she says
"I missed you." Ed yells at something about people stepping in the
marigolds and Charles & Vivian Grant show up. Viv is happy to see that
David is there and mentions feeling a breakthrough the last time they
were together. She wonders what prompted that and Sly Chuck says "I
wonder..." Viv calls to David who says he's in the middle of a game. Viv
looks disappointed but Charles says that that's progress. Meanwhile, Dinah
is holding court. She's telling outlandishly exaggerated tales about her
kidnapping to Ben and the Grants who are hanging on her every word. (I
personally think Ben's only pretending to be enthralled because of
Dinah's teeny red bikini!) Matt stands behind Dinah listening to her tale
of woe and smirking. Matt makes his presence known and Dinah stops
mid-sentence. Matt tells her not to let him interrupt and she looks
uneasy and clears her throat with a timid squeak.

COMMERCIAL

Dinah says that there's not much more to tell and starts giving Matt all
the credit for his attempted rescue and his bravery, etc. Everyone
applauds Matt who points out that the food is ready. Ben starts to leave
and Dinah grabs him saying "Hey, hey, hey! Stay! I may need
a...soda...or something later." She then walks over to where Matt is
getting a cool, refreshing lemonade and defends herself for exaggerating
by saying that people like good stories. "When they're true." says Matt.
Dinah blames it on the acting classes she took in Paris. She says how
everything feels so much more "charged" and "intense" ("Like you can
actually reach out and feel the molecules.") since their near-death
experience and wonders if Matt doesn't feel the same way. Matt quips that
he thinks she needs to get something to eat. She insists that they are
probably the only two people there that truly appreciate how fragile life
is and how everything could be snatched away at any moment. Matt doesn't
agree. He figures Uncle Ed, Lucy and Alan Michael all probably have a
pretty good idea too. Dinah says "Well, okay, so maybe I'm not the only
one." "But you are the only one who knows how to fake it." Replies Matt
as he turns to walk away. D grabs his arm and begs him not to tell
anyone, especially her mother because she feels like V cares about her
for the first time in her life. Matt says he almost believes her and
that's what's really sick because if he hadn't spoiled their little plan
she and Victor would be on a plane to Rio right now. Dinah says that she
has all the more reason to thank him then because she can't think of
anyplace else she'd rather be than here. (Must be the Bauer Burgers!)"So
don't blow it for me, Matt." she pleads.

"Don't blow it for yourself,
Dinah." Warns Matt, "There's one thing you can do to assure my silence."

"What?"

"Be a good daughter. Your mother seems to love you for some reason. Why
don't you try to deserve it?" As if on cue, Vanessa arrives.

(HEY! Both his mommies, a bunch of family & a ton of other kids are at this
bash, where's Pete?!?! For that matter, where's Bill?)

BLAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE1 (Holly's place...)
Blake is weeping and Holly is trying to comfort her. Blake is saying how
sad she is for Rog and how much he put himself on the line during the
kidnapping to show Holly how brave and heroic he is. Holly says it's time
for Rog to start thinking of everything in terms of her and to stop
thinking of her at all. Holly's sorry this is so tough on Blake and that
she had to hear about the wedding that way. "Honey, Roger and I are not
good for each other." Holly says as she puts on a preschool-teachger
voice to explain to Blake how lots of kids have the same fantasy about
their parents getting back together and how Mommy and Daddy both still
love you even if they don't love each other. Then she tells her that
she's not a kid anymore, she's a grown woman w/ a husband of her own and
she needs to get LET IT GO because "IT AIN'T GONNA' HAPPEN!" (YAY
HOLLY!!!!!) (She actually said it rather gently but firmly.) "Well, I
can't promise you that I'll *EVER* be happy about it!" Pouts Blake. Holly
says she knows and goes back to being all giddy. She tells Blake she
wants her to stand up w/ her and starts to tell her where the wedding
will be held when Blake interrupts:

 "I don't wanna' know."

"Honey, this is a new beginning for me, I want you to be there with me."

"No, Mom, you're gonna' be a beautiful bride. It's a beautiful dress. It
woulda' been fun to help you pick it out."

Blake leaves.

THE BAUER BURGER EXPRESS!
(At least, that's what it says on the side of the grill!)
Alex and Desmond arrive and Alex introduces Des to the Grants then
ditches him to go pump Ben for info. Ben appears to be glum and Alex asks
if he and Fletch are having problems.

"What else is new?" exclaims Ben, "He's about to make the biggest mistake
of his life and he won't listen to me."

Ben stalks off with Alex hot on his trail. Ed stands up on a table
(haven't you learned your lesson yet, Dr. B?) and thanks everyone for
their contributions to the meal and for being such good pals. He says how
their friendships have gotten him through an awful lot and thanks them
all for coming. Everyone cheers. Ed then covertly hand Lillian a list of
people asking that she ask them all to come back late tomorrow afternoon
to help clean up. When Lil objects he says he can't explain and says to
tell each of the people that the others can't help so it's *REALLY*
important that she get them to come. He says he'll handle Ross himself.
Lillian, although confused, agrees. Ed then uses his own plan to get Ross
to agree to come "help clean up" late then next afternoon.

Alex is hanging all over Ben encouraging him to tell her about the
mistake his father is about to make. Ben says it's the worst...the kind
that lasts forever...until he dies!

Ross brings a glum Blake a plate of food but she refuses it. He hopes
it's not Dinah and she says it's not...she's happy that she's back safe
and sound. Ross says "But you never believed that she was in any real
jeopordy, did you?" Blake says she doesn't want to fight. Ross says he
just wants to know what the matter is and Blake glares at her mother who
is talking to Ed.

"How's it going?" Holly asks a beaming Ed.

"Everyone's coming." says Ed. "There have been a few strange reactions to
people being asked to come help clean up but everyone said yes and the
wedding goes forward!"

"Oh Goody!"

"You have all the contingencies covered?"

"I'm hoping I do." says Holly, glancing at Ben who is being pursued by
Alex as Fletcher observes.

"So Ben, you're quite a spiker." Coos Alex. "I noticed your father, he's
into that volleyball for all he's worth."

"Good body, no brain."

"Yeah, I'm beginning to worry about him and this big mistake you say he's
about to make. Tell me what it is. Maybe there's something I can do. I'm
sure there is."

"Look, look, the only thing that can help my dad is a lobotomy."

"Oh Ben, come on! It's not that bad!"

"I can't stand not telling anyone! Meet me in two minutes."

David announces that it's time they all get in the pool. AM asks Lucy if
she wants to and she says the last time she was swimming was with Brent
at the Country Club so she's not in the mood for it. AM tells her not to
worry, Brent's not going to hurt her again.

Roger says hello to Dinah who says she owes him a very big thank you. Rog
says that danger becomes her and they flirt fairly outrageously. Dinah
then tells Rog how she knows now how much her family loves her since Van
chose her over Matt to be released. Rog says "Your mother loves you very
much indeed. Which reminds me, I need to talk to my own daughter..."

Roger asks Blake if he upset her by dropping by Holly's. She says it had
nothing to do with him and walks away.

Ben & Alex meet serepticiously in the Bauer kitchen and Ben tells Alex
that Fletch is about to make a whopper mistake.

"Alright. Mistake, what mistake?" asks Alex, "What's he about to do?"

"Marry Holly Lindsey!"

"WHAT?!?!"

"She's become so pushy! Trying to run all our lives, trying to become a
mother to me, I don't need another mother! But it's gonna' happen!
My dad'll do anything she says!"

"W....wwwwwwslow down here! How can Fletcher and Holly be getting
married? They just broke up."

"It was all a fake! Just pretend so they threw everybody off track.
Especially Roger Thorpe! (sigh) But they're gonna' elope!"

"Wait a minute. I don't believe this. I don't believe this.
I...I...I..Now...when? When?"

"Tomorrow. They're flying to San Francisco TONIGHT!"

Alex lets out a half laugh and a sick smile crosses her face.

BACK AT THE BASH...
Lillian asks Ed if he's eaten and he says no. She gives him a plate and
he says "Can't slip anything by you, can I?"

"Nope." Says Lillian as she takes a seat next to him, "Your mother
would've been so proud of you today. Feeding the multitudes, toughing
your way through those sad moments. You don't have to be so strong all
the time."

Ed says that he had a bad time in Europe and didn't want to come back at
all. He says he wanted to pretend he could spend the rest of his life
looking at cathedrals and muesems with Michelle and not face the real
world: the house, the hospital, etc. "If you have do do something...I
have to get on with my life, I might as well do it today." Lillian holds
Ed's hand.

Vanessa and Matt stroll by and Van says how nice it is to be among their
friends and what a great time they're having. Matt says that the ordeal
the previous night seems like a dream and Van admits to still feeling
scared. Vanessa says that she wants to set a wedding date and get
married fast. They embrace and Dinah watches them.

Roger glances about the party until he is practically abducted by Alex
who whisks him away to the kitchen.

Nick ask Fletch how the plan is going and then heads to the Journal.
Fletcher winks and the radiant Holly.

In the kitchen, Roger asks Alex what's going on...

"It was all a subterfuge Roger, an act!" (witty to use subterfuge!)
She goes on to explain what Ben told her to a flabbergasted Roger.

THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
