GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE: FRIDAY, JULY 29, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Jenna gets some interesting gifts.
* Buzz & Deenie continue to read each other's minds on SoulMates
* Bridget gets a birthday surprise bigger than a party
* Van & Matt say goodbye, but he just can't let go

JENNA'S SUITE: While brushing her teeth, Jenna is surprised to find a
diamond-encrusted choker sitting atop her room service plate-cover.
Toothbrush in mouth, she stares at it wonderingly. She stops to open the
door -- it's Eleni with Marina. Eleni has come to discuss "unfinished
business," but is distracted by a newspaper containing the huge headline:
"JENNA BRADSHAW WINS MILLIONS IN SPAULDING LAWSUIT." The paper is dated
January 1995. Jenna says she initially thought it was AM's idea of a
joke, but the necklace changed her mind. She shows it to Eleni & says she
has no idea where it came from.

WSPR: Buzz submits to the makeup & hair people, but when they leave he
looks at himself (they've created a David-Letterman-style forelock; Buzz
thinks he looks like a cemetary plot salesman) & musses up his hair. The
producer tells him he's "too old for the grunge look" & suggests they
find a happy medium. Buzz resents her comments, but figures he'll be the
one laughing when he walks away with the big bucks. She asks what he'll
spend it on; he says he owes people, & when he's free & clear, he's going
to make some lifestyle changes. The producer suggests he start by getting
Nadine to show up on time -- she's an hour late. Buzz says she'll be
there; the producer says if Nadine doesn't show in 15 minutes, she'll
have to substitute another couple.

COMPANY: Ed & Eve prepare a surprise party for Bridget. Eve tells Ed she
hates surprises & if he ever throws one for her, she'll divorce him.
Ooops, slip of the tongue, but he knows what she means. She goes to get
more candles. AM arrives & Dylan spots Bridget heading for the door.
Everyone shushes & hides.

Outside, Nadine stops Bridget to wish her a happy birthday & give her a
little gift. She apologizes for not being able to stay but tells Jet to
thank Ed for thinking of her. Jet is confused.

Nadine enters to shouts of "SURPRISE!!" She relays Bridget's message that
she'll come back later tonight.

SUMMIT LAKE: The phone rings & Vanessa is still sleeping, so Matt
answers. Back at Company, Josh thinks he has the wrong number. Matt tells
him to hold on, "She's just getting out of bed." Josh asks, just out of
curiousity, who he's speaking with.

Matt hands the phone to Van. Josh thinks she sounds funny & comments on
her late sleeping. Van reminds him that she's on vacation. She says she's
having some carpentry work done. "Yeah, you told me the place hasn't been
lived in for awhile, so I guess it needed a little..." (I don't think
carpentry was what he had in mind.) Josh holds the phone away from his
mouth while he attempts to suppress his laughter & wipe the smirk off,
but can't resist one little dig: "Far be it from me to start rumors about
you having some kind of passionate fling with the guy from the local bait
shop." Van asks why Josh called; it was because Van had wanted to talk to
Bridget on her birthday, but Bridget isn't there, so he can call back
later, but he doesn't want to interrupt anything... Van asks him to tell
Bridget she loves her & make sure she gets Van's present. She promises to
be home soon. Van hangs up & Matt says he'll leave; he thinks things are
getting kind of tense & it's not a good idea for him to stay. Van thinks
this is a good idea & thinks she should get going soon herself.

COMPANY: Outside, Dylan guilts Jet by telling her that Ed is all excited
about the present he wants to give her. Inside, AM is surprised to see
Frank; he didn't know Frank & Jet were close. Frank says Jet used to hang
out at the diner & resents AM's insinuation that he shouldn't be there.
"I would never presume to throw you out of any place you were invited,"
digs AM. Frank brings up the matter of the stolen letter & AM maintains
that he gave it back. Jet finally enters & everyone sings Happy Birthday.
Eve presents a cake laden with pink flowers & lit candles. Jet looks a
little overwhelmed.

REGENCY: Practical-minded Eleni dismisses Jenna's mystery gifts as
probably delivered to the wrong room. Jenna thinks someone is trying to
frame her. The manager arrives & Jenna starts insisting that she's not a
thief & demands to know who has accused her. The manager is confused. He
didn't mean his note (which Jenna never got) to sound accusatory & never
doubted that she would pay her bill, but when he found the payment in
cash on his desk that morning, he wanted to bring her the receipt in
person. Jenna smiles & pretends she knows what he's talking about. He
leaves & Eleni notes that someone is taking very good care of Jenna & it
better not be Buzz. Jenna thinks this is unlikely & says Buzz is no
longer part of her life. Eleni says she doesn't want to be part of the
lotion business anymore & doesn't want Jenna to have any excuse for
coming by & getting Buzz "all confused."

SUMMIT LAKE: Matt prepares to leave & gives Van some advice for getting
other repairs done. She offers to pay him in advance for the work, but he
says he won't be sticking around that long. "You want to how I think it
would go? You'd pack & leave & I'd be here trying to work, but what I'd
really be doing is looking in the windows, trying to figure out where you
stood... I'd find some silly reason to call you... You'd be talking to me
in a tight voice because I bothered you at home & I'd feel really stupid,
like I did when I answered the phone today." He says they don't know how
to act around one another & it's strange that, even though nothing
happened, it still feels like something did. He's trying to thank her. He
keeps trying to picture her kids & her husband, who will be coming home
someday. He starts to leave. Van says she doesn't have to leave today
because she still has one day left on her boat rental & wants to take
advantage of it. She offers to give him a lift into town. He accepts.

RUSTY NAIL, SUMMIT LAKE: Matt arranges for a room. Van thanks him again
for his work & wishes him happiness. He asks if he said the wrong thing
earlier & she says no, he has a very clear perspective. He wishes he'd
kept his mouth shut, but Van is glad he didn't. He kisses her hand & she
smiles, then decides it's time to get sailing. An old-timer thinks this
is a bad idea, considering the weather. Van says there's not a cloud in
the sky & no report of storms. "It's your funeral," says the man & walks
away. Van thinks he's the voice of doom, but Matt suggests that, just in
case he has a pipeline to Mother Nature, she shouldn't stay out too long.
She promises to be careful & asks him to do the same. She says goodbye &
leaves, life jacket in hand. Matt sits at the bar & looks at the menu,
then at the door.

REGENCY: Eleni says she'll give up her rights to the formula, at no
charge, for the sake of her family. Jenna says Eleni is going to
unnecesary lengths to keep Jenna from doing something she has no
intention of doing anyway. She draws the line at getting involved with
married men, which is what Buzz apparently is now. Eleni leaves.

Jenna tries to call Roger, but he's not in. She considers the necklace &
says it's not enough to buy her off. While waiting for someone at the
station to find Rog, she turns on the TV & sees Nadine & Buzz. She
notices that Nadine is wearing a wedding ring. She asks the person on the
other end of the line about the Coopers. "Are they really married?"

WSPR: Buzz asks Nadine where she's been, but she says she doesn't have to
report to him. Nick bitches about how the game show is disrupting the
station; Gilly points out the advantages of a promotional tie-in with the
network & says it'll only be a few more days. Anyway, she thought Nick
was going to make himself scarce for awhile. Nick says he'll be at
Spaulding & needs Gilly to keep an eye on Rog. Nick is sure Rog is up to
something. The producer asks them to clear out, then takes a call. She
laughs off the question about the contestants being married, saying
people always ask that, but Gilly's ears perk. She says if the call was
about the Coopers, it's true they're not married. Gilly explains their
history in a nutshell & says she thought the producer knew, since it's
not a secret. The producer holds her head & sighs as the show begins.

COMPANY: Bridget thrills over Van's gift, which is an album full of
pictures of Peter. Ed wants his gift to be last. AM calls the paper to
check on his personal ad. Eleni arrives & gives Frank a kiss & tells him
he's wonderful for handling the party. AM learns that there's been no
answer to his ad. He goes over to Frank & asks how one would start out
looking for a missing person. Frank asks who he's looking for.

Jet reads Lucy's card aloud. Then she opens another card, which she reads
to herself & puts away. Dylan asks who it's from; Jet says it's from her
big brother, who hasn't remembered her birthday in years & probably wants
money. She wants to open Ed's gift. Ed hands her a key on a ribbon &
tells her that the key fits "something in this building. It's your job to
find out what it is."

SUMMIT LAKE: Van sails as the sky darkens. Matt sits at a table in the
Rusty Nail & tells the old-timer that the wind has died down & asks if
the man is ready to reverse his dire prediction. The man invites Matt
outside & points to the gathering thunderheads. Matt worries about Van.
The man says when it gets dark & quiet, that's when it's going to hit
hard & soon. Matt runs inside & arranges to borrow a boat "with a real
strong motor." He heads out in a 15-foot rowboat with an outboard motor.

Van talks to herself & wonders what she expected to happen by coming up
to the lake. She hasn't found any answers or solutions. She doesn't seem
to notice the thunder rumbling. Matt speeds away from the dock.

WSPR: The producer reams Gilly for recommending Buzz & Nadine. Gilly says
everyone in town thinks of them as married & if the producer is going to
be such a stickler, she should have asked for documentation. The producer
whines as Nick & Gilly move off. Nick tells Gilly that if she can find
out what Rog is up to, she'll get half the station.

REGENCY: Jenna requests that the lock on her room be changed. She glumly
watches SoulMates. Mark asks who gives in first in a fight. Jenna says
it's Nadine -- she's spineless & always goes crawling back to Buzz.
Nadine answers that it's Buzz, & she is right. Jenna digs hungrily into
her cantaloupe. Mark asks which household chore is Buzz's favorite. Jenna
decides it's cooking. Nadine answers that it's polishing the silver (?!)
& she's right again! "What silver?!" Jenna asks in frustration.

WSPR: The producer watches Nadine on the monitor. She's on a roll. The
next question: "What is the one thing that Buzz would be miserable doing
without?" Jenna answers, "His freedom." Nadine answers, "His children."
Nadine is right again. Everyone claps.

REGENCY: Behind Jenna, someone silently moves the telephone & slides a
magazine onto the end table. The magazine is called "WEALTH," & it has
Jenna's photo on the cover.

SUMMIT LAKE: Amidst blowing wind & a sky dark enough to be night, Matt
ties his boat to Vanessa's & climbs aboard. He points out the approaching
storm & tells her she should get into his boat & come back to shore with
him. As the wind rocks the sailboat, Vanessa laughs at it's incredible
strength, but her enjoyment turns to concern as the rain & lightning hit
& the wind becomes too powerful for her to sail. Matt says they have to
try to make it to the motorboat, but Van doesn't want to abandon the
sailboat. Matt says they have no choice. He drops the anchor &
accidentally knocks loose the rope holding them to the motorboat.

COMPANY: Frank & Eleni watch Buzz & Nadine clean up on SoulMates while
Jet tries to find the lock that matches her key. It doesn't fit her
grandmother's jewelry case or a suitcase found in the basement. Jet asks
for a hint. Ed tells her that it's not in the basement or the attic. Ed
says, "It's in the room." Bridget keeps looking. David pulls Dylan aside
& asks if he's going to upstage Ed by giving Bridget *his* gift right
away. Dylan smiles & says it can wait. AM is looking for forks & Bridget
sees a metal box with a handle behind the counter.

SOULMATES: Mark asks the men where they were when their wives fell in
love with them. Buzz says it was in a drive-in, in the backseat of his
car (did he also say "legs in the air"? Or is my imagination working
overtime?) Mark asks if he remembers the movie; Buzz says Julie Christie
was in it. (Right, remember when they re-enacted this date? The movie was
Dr. Zhivago.)

The producer pulls Nadine & Buzz aside during the commercial break &
demands to know the truth. Who is Nadine Lewis & is there a Mrs. Cooper
at all?

COMPANY: Jet opens the box & finds lots of papers. "There's nothing new
in here," she says. Ed says to look for something old. "Like the deed,"
he hints. She finds it. So what? "Look at it!" cries Ed. Ed has signed
the house over to her. He presents her with a full-page ad that reads,
"COMPANY A Springfield Tradition for Food and Lodging. Now under new
management. Happy Birthday Bridget!" Bridget hugs her uncle ecstaticly.

SOULMATES: Mark tells Nadine that if she gets the question right, she &
Buzz win, but if she gets it wrong, they don't. He asks the question. She
doesn't think Buzz knows when she really fell in love with him, which was
in 10th grade, when Buzz first kissed her. She thinks, however, that Buzz
will say it happened at the drive-in. Yes!!!

The Coopers join Mark & he asks them to share the story of their little
"anniversary." Buzz explains that he's a veteran & it took him a long
time to get home from Vietnam. Nadine gave up on him & remarried, then
she got divorced, then Buzz came back, and a month ago, they went to a JP
& got remarried. Nadine looks slightly shocked, but pleasantly surprised
& she gives Buzz a big hug.

COMPANY: Frank, Eleni & Lucy are surprised to hear this news.

REGENCY: Jenna turns off the TV in shock. She stands & walks to the other
end of the couch, then sits again. Someone is watching her.

SUMMIT LAKE: Van tries to take the jib down, but the storm rocks the boat
uncontrollably & she falls. Matt shouts, "Contessa!!" & jumps in after
her as the screen fades to black.
