GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE: FRIDAY, JULY 15, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Ross gets up on the wrong side of the couch & sides with Alex.
* Alex shoots down Jenna & warms up for Alan-Michael.
* Vanessa heads solo for Summit Lake & crosses paths with a mystery man.
* Buzz & Nadine go for the whole kit & kaboodle on SoulMates.
* Rog tries to make contact in Hong Kong.
* Alan-Michael gets some startling news from a prison guard.

A sunny morning in Springfield, USA...

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Ross answers the phone & Alex asks him to stop by her
place on his way to the office. "There is a threat that must be quashed."
Ross agrees & hangs up. As he walks through the living room, he looks
down to find AM asleep on the couch. "BLAKE!!" he bellows. Blake rushes
in, full of explanations.

SPAULDING HOUSE OF HORRORS: Alex asks for coffee, but it's not Ginger
who's entered. "I've come to tell you to keep your hands off my future,"
says Jenna.

WSPR: Buzz & Nadine are putting on makeup ("How come you get mascara & I
don't?" Buzz asks) while the studio prepares to shoot SoulMates. The
producer arrives with encouraging words for Deenie & a suggestion that
Buzz lighten up ("You look like you just escaped from the State Pen").
She calls for quiet on the set. Buzz looks nervous.

DINER: Stavros, David & Holly gather round a little TV to watch
SoulMates. The host is Marc McEwen (using his real name) with hostess
Hanna Gray ;-). Buzz & Deenie will be challenging 2-time champs Don &
Darlene Darling of Chicago.

The pay phone rings for Holly. It's Rog in Hong Kong. He's being watched
through an ajar door by our mysterious Asian lady & boasts that he just
broke into the best-guarded, highest-security office in Hong Kong. The
woman closes the door & picks up the phone. "Sir, Roger Thorpe is here."

LEWIS HOUSE: Vanessa packs while we hear her stream of consciousness:
Will I be able to sleep at the camp? It doesn't matter; I can't sleep
here anyway. She remembers a few people she has to call & makes a note.
She catches herself in the mirror & sighs at the circles under her eyes:
they haven't been that dark since she wore "the mask of pregnancy...
Jenna didn't have it, but she's young. I was younger." More packing.
"It's all wrong. Everything's wrong. Am I wrong too? Am I just plain too
old for this? Nope, I'm just going." She abandons the suitcase & leaves
practically empty-handed. (Was that a change of underwear she was
carrying along with her purse?)

HILL HOUSE: Alex says Jenna's visit is pointless; her lawyers & AM's will
hash things out. Jenna says it won't be necessary; she's perfectly
willing to let go of Spaulding's clients & get others. Alex laughs this
off--Jenna has no capital & her whole enterprise was founded with Alex's
money. [Scuse me, I thought that money was AM's, given freely by Bess.
The fact that Bess got it from Alex in the first place is immaterial.]
Jenna offers to let Alex share in the profits. Alex laughs at the piddly
profit possibilities. Jenna wonders why, if her company is so
insignificant, Alex is so anxious to shut her down. She remembers when
she was preggers with Rog's baby & Alex was "almost nice" to her & gave
her some sage advice. Since then she has operated only for herself & this
business is like her child. She has no desire to compete with Alex & asks
that Alex simply let her & her business be. Alex thinks.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Blake tries to buy sympathy for the barely-moving AM, but
Ross is PO'd. He searches for his glasses (which, Blake points out, are
on his head :-) She figures Ross is worried that with first Frank & now
AM, their house is becoming a haven for her ex-beaus, but Ross says he
doesn't care about Frank--"It's the yachtless one... just buy him a
rowboat & get him out of here... A tiny rowboat." :-) AM, trying to clear
the fog from his brain, asks Ross what Alex wants to talk to him about.
Ross rudely declines to answer & storms out. "He didn't kiss me goodbye,"
worries Blake. AM apologizes. She asks him where he's gonna go, what he's
gonna do. They sit on the couch & he rests his head on her shoulder.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex says Jenna doesn't own Leicester Square Lotion.
"I own Spaulding. You were funded by Spaulding." Jenna says the contract
merely states that she can't do business with Spaulding clients. Alex
lectures about contracts & technicalities & lawyers & money & how they
all interact to provide her with the desired results. She only wishes
there was something more she could take from Jenna. Jenna was cruel to
her in the past & Alex is an eye-for-an-eye kind of gal. Jenna reminds
Alex that if it weren't for Buzz, she'd never have gotten Spaulding back.
Alex can't figure out why Buzz & Jenna aren't together: "You defend him,
he protects you..." Jenna asks what Alex means about Buzz protecting her.
Alex tells her to ask Buzz. Jenna leaves.

WSPR: Nadine encourages Buzz to smile. She reminds him that there are
things they can't talk about, such as Buzz being away for 20 years,
Nadine's marriage to Billy, etc. Buzz reminds Nadine that half the town
knows they're not married. Nadine says everyone is rooting for them. The
producer shows up & Buzz becomes Mr. Enthusiasm.

On the set, Gilly & Marc McEwen chat it up. "So, Roger Thorpe owns this
station?" asks Marc. He remembers playing golf with Rog; Rog was so
charming that Marc didn't protest when Rog cheated on his score. [Hey,
how about Gilly & Marc McEwen? He's a fun guy!]

CARRIAGE HOUSE: AM tells Blake that Alex wants to get him good--fraud,
breach of contract, etc. He wonders if it means jail time. Blake says no,
besides, Ross would never take the case. AM laughs, but figures he's got
nothing left to lose anyway. He recites his litany of recent mistakes:
leaving Spaulding, turning down the presidency, & his "astute grasp of
personal relationships." He wonders why he couldn't see how wrong he was
about Eleni. Blake says AM was raised to believe that everything safe &
secure would be taken away from him. AM is willing to take the
responsibility & consequences but wonders why he's so desperate that he
always takes the wrong turn, always makes the wrong choice.

HONG KONG: A man I assume to be Alan (we see only his back & his "S"
cufflink) & the Asian woman listen on another line as Rog tells Holly
that he thinks one guy on their list might be the key, but he's had no
luck getting in touch. Holly suggests the man may be avoiding Rog because
he knows what Rog is after. Rog doubts this, but says he'll know shortly,
because that's whose office he's in. Holly warns Rog to be careful; she
has a bad feeling. She encourages him to come right home, do not pass Go.
Rog says he's enjoying their co-conspiracy & tells her he loves her
before hanging up. "You know what to do," Alan tells Miss Hong Kong. She
smiles, turns out the light & enters the room where Roger waits. She acts
surprised & asks what he's doing there. Rog plays it real cool; says Mr.
Tashua (sp?) asked him to pick up the Spaulding file. Miss HK threatens
to call the guard.

A DESERTED ROADSIDE EATERY: Van treats us to more voice-over stream of
consciousness... remembrance of things past... the road home... no one to
answer to... no schedules to keep... do anything I want... meet anyone I
want. She calls out to see if anyone's around.

Somewhere in the back, a couple is swapping major spit on a narrow cot.
They hear Vanessa & debate as to who should go handle the customer. The
woman loses (she's wearing more clothes). We learn that the man showed up
a few days ago & offered to work, but hasn't actually done any work as
yet. He's early 30s with thick, dark hair, a strong build, a healthy
scattering of dark chest hair & a 5 o'clock shadow. The woman is a fairly
pretty 20-something with dirty blonde hair & a waitress uniform (She
actually looks a little like Chelsea Reardon). She ambles out to help
Vanessa & explains that she was "doing inventory."

In the back, the man turns on the tube & kicks back. He gets a fuzzy B&W
picture & settles in to watch SoulMates.

WSPR: McEwen explains SoulMates' goal: to find America's most perfect
couple. He introduces the returning champs & the 2 Springfield couples.
Buzz looks uncomfortable but tries pasting on a smile. Buzz & Nadine have
both listed themselves as "entrepreneurs," so McEwen asks Buzz exactly
what he does. "Stuff," replies Buzz. "He makes me feel like every other
woman dreams of feeling," gushes Nadine. McEwen explains the rules: the
couples who make it through the regional Tournament of Love move on to NY
to compete for the national championship. A la the Newlywed Game, the
women are "soundproofed" while the men are asked the first question.

DINER: David thinks it would have been better if the women had gotten the
first question, since Nadine is obviously more "into it" than Buzz.
Stavros doesn't think Buzz looks capable of doing much of anything.

WSPR: The first category is "Boom Boom" (sex). The question for Don
Darling: Does your wife have a particular article of clothing that
particularly turns you on? If so, what is it & why does it work? Don
hoots; it's obvious he knows what Darlene will say. The question for
Eugene is if there was an aphrodesiac food that Eugene couldn't stomach,
would Lola feed it to him anyway? Eugene looks a little worried. Marc
promises a question that will knock that "not-so-nice" look off Buzz's
face, right after the commercial break.

DINER: Ross enters & asks for a strong cup of coffee. Holly wonders why
Blake didn't meet her for breakfast; Ross explains about AM. Holly is
concerned; Ross remembers she warned him about Blake & AM. Holly backs
down & says she's sure it's nothing, that other time was just a slip;
Ross tries to rationalize it as well. Ross wonders why Blake couldn't
have taken up knitting instead.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Blake tells AM about her meeting with Alex & all the
questions Alex asked about Alan & his wedding present to her. AM says
Alan is the one person Alex is afraid of. Blake recommends that AM use
this--go to Alan & tell him what Alex is doing. AM doesn't think Alan has
much use for him & it's possible he blames AM even more than Alex for
being in jail. Blake says he should just do it, because "a father is a
father." Her father has always forgiven her. AM appreciates her hospi-
tality & talks about getting a room at the club. He decides maybe he will
go see Alan. At the door he concludes, "If anything, he'll be able to
tell me what one does when all one has is one's name." He & Blake share a
long look & Am says he loves her. She smiles at him sympathetically &
closes the door behind him.

HONG KONG: Rog wonders if he's met the Asian lady before. She says only
if he's been to Hong Kong before. She says he also doesn't know Mr.
Tashua. She realizes he's the man who's been calling & trying to meet
with Tashua, but Tashua has no interest in Rog. Rog says he wants to
discuss Spaulding. The woman denies any knowledge of Spaulding, but Rog
sees a spark of recognition in her eyes. Alan listens from behind the
door. Rog explains his extensive knowledge of & intimate contacts with
Spaulding. The woman says Tashua isn't there. Rog tells her where he's
staying & leaves his card, in case Mr. Tashua changes his mind.

TRUCK STOP: Vanessa asks directions & the waitress provides them. In the
back, the man checks out the classifieds & sees an ad for waiters &
lifeguards at the Summit Lake Marina. Out front, Van leaves & a state
trooper stops in & asks "Dee" about a fugitive from Ohio. In back, the
man hears & gets antsy. The trooper shows Dee a photo of her man.

WSPR: The Coopers are in 2nd place. They take center stage to match wits.
Buzz looks petrified. Marc asks Nadine the 1st question he asked Buzz:
What would she do if he told her he was in love with another woman? "I
would say it was all in his head." Buzz jumps for joy. The next question
is, "What does Deenie put on when she wants her man?" Deenie guesses, "A
slide show." Bzzzzt. Last question to catch the Darlings. Buzz points to
his eyes as if Nadine should stare into them & catch his vibes. "What one
thing do you love more than life itself?" Nadine is stumped. "Life has
really been good to me. I can't say," she answers. Marc can't believe it.
Buzz predicted that Nadine would be too stubborn to answer the question.
Much screaming & joyful jumping & kissing & hugging of Mr. McEwen.

It's a tie between the Coopers & the Darlings. Sudden-death round. One
question, one answer, one winner. The Coopers are up. The is for Nadine.
"What would your husband do if you told him you were expecting?"

REGENCY: Jenna talks to her baby. "Everyone's angry at us & I wouldn't
give 2 hoots if it weren't for you." She promises to give her baby
everything, but realizes she can't even come up with a father. She can't
go back to him. She wonders what Alex meant by her "protect" remark.
Maybe things have changed & she owes it to the baby to find out. And she
owes it to Buzz to let him know the real deal. She motivates.

TRUCK STOP: The waitress says she doesn't recognize the man in the photo.
The trooper hears the TV in the room & asks about it. Dee says there's a
bed & TV for whoever works nights & she was taking a nap til the last
customer came in. Trooper asks to see the room. Waitress tries to stop
him. When they get there, the room's empty. "See?" says Dee.

FERRY: Vanessa boards with her car. Our mystery man boards on foot. He's
traveling light; just a small pack & a sign reading "California." He pays
the ferryman & climbs to the upper deck. Vanessa stands at the railing &
stares out over the water.

DINER: Blake & Holly sit in a booth. Blake doesn't get why Ross gets so
hot under the collar about her exes. "Don't I have to put up with one of
his being my mother?" She figures if Van needed help, Ross wouldn't turn
her away. Blake wonders why her mom seems so entranced by the pay phone.

Counterside, Stavros, David & some customers root against the Darlings.

WSPR: The Darlings miss a question. It's Buzz & Deenie's chance to win
the lawnmower, the cookware, the luggage & $3400. "What would your
husband do if you told him you were expecting?" Buzz jokes that he'd
donate her body to science. Then he goes for the real answer: "Not leave
her side." Nadine looks happy. Marc reads her answer "Not let me out of
his sight." Marc decides this is close enough & the Coopers are winners!

STATE PRISON: AM asks to see Alan Spaulding. "Who?" asks the guard. AM
repeats the name. The guard says there's nobody there by that name.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex tells Ross that AM needs to be taught a lesson
for stabbing her in the back & making her look like a fool. With deadly
calm, she instructs: "Sue him blind. Break him. Leave him with absolutely
nothing. Same price his father paid. No more, no less. Will you do it?"
Ross says he will. "Business is business."

PRISON: AM says his father must be there. The guard asks for ID that AM
is Alan's son. The guard pulls out a file & shows AM a picture. "Is this
him?" AM says it is. "Where is he?" asks AM. "Beats me," replies the
guard. "He was released a month ago." AM shakes his head in disbelief.

HONG KONG: Rog tries to get the Asian woman to guarantee that Tashua will
call him. She promises only to deliver Rog's message. Rog leaves. Alan
emerges. He praises Susan for her work & says Rog hasn't changed. He's
convinced Rog will do whatever he asks. He concludes that his business in
Hong Kong is done & he's ready to head home. We finally see his face.
It's thin but not gaunt, with a well-trimmed King Arthur beard & mus-
tache. He's tall with graying medium brown hair, a deep voice & quiet
presence. I'm thinking that Ron Raines might make a decent Alan as the
screen fades to black.
