A hot summer night in Springfield, USA...

LEWIS HOUSE: Bill helps Marah & Shayne lug in about two tons of toys to
keep themselves amused while at Cross Creek. Van tells them they won't
need so many because there will be lots of new, exciting things to do.
Shayne worries about tornadoes & bears; Van promises that there are
indeed bears, but none that can match their granddaddy HB. It seems Josh
is in Houston on business. Henry is also going on the trip & he worries
about leaving Vanessa alone. She says she's looking forward to the time
alone because she has a lot of things to do. Besides, she'll have Peter a
lot of the time. Henry tells her she can't pretend she's not troubled.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni says it's time they settle things. Buzz interrupts to
give Frank an envelope with a few hundred bucks toward his debt (was
$5000, but he lost most of it trying to parlay it into bigger bucks at
cards). Lucy arrives & tells Frank that the "trash" is being hauled away
as they speak. She pulls Buzz onto the porch, explains about AM &
suggests they leave F&E alone for the evening. Nadine arrives & tells
Buzz they can try out for the game show at 7 AM the next morning at WSPR.

Back inside, Frank asks Eleni what she wants. She confesses that she
recently realized she still had feelings for AM.

YACHT: AM lights candles & calls to Andrew to ask about the meal. Tangie
appears & AM is surprised to see her. She gives him the papers he needs
to sign & says that she didn't know until today that AM was half-owner of
WSPR. She asks why the shore looks so far away & AM rushes to look.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni says she doesn't love AM now, but she remembers
loving him at one time. All through her marriage with Frank, she denied
ever having loved AM, but now she realizes that she shouldn't have
regretted her love. She found this out when she tried to regret loving
Frank. "It was the most foolish thing I had ever done." She afirms that
she does not love AM now, but he will always be special to her & she'll
always care about him. She tells Frank that he can't blame AM for her
feelings, because AM didn't take advantage of them, even though she might
have let him. "Because I wanted to be tempted... That made me understnad
how you could have gotten to that point with Julie."

Frank points out that he never loved Julie, but he realizes now that he
wasn't quite as innocent as he claimed to be. Eleni says she understands
what it's like to have someone admire you; it feels good. "Alan-Michael
believed in me; he said that I could be a career woman... I could have my
home... I could do both & I could succeed at them. And that is what I
have always wanted you to understand!" She admits that she is not
innocent. Maybe she wanted to know that she could love someone besides
Frank and that he could love me when you didn't. "I'm sorry; I was wrong.
I was very wrong. Maybe in the same way that you were wrong with Julie."
She realizes how things can happen without one's really wanting to.

Frank is glad she's being honest with him, even though it hurts. He
admits he wasn't honest to her about Julie's games & he wasn't honest
with himself about how important Eleni's career was to her. He says the
most important thing is to know the truth. Eleni agrees. Frank wants to
know if she loves him enough to forget the bad things & start over.

YACHT: Tangie yells fruitlessly for help. AM says the radio is dead & the
cellular phone is too. And though he knows how to pilot the boat, the
engines are also mysteriously dead. AM is convinced that Tangie is
somehow behind this, acting as an agent for someone, maybe Rog or Alex or
Frank. She, meanwhile, thinks AM is pulling a stunt to try & seduce her,
but he finds the idea laughable. They trade accusations for awhile...
A: I'm not Jack the Ripper!
T: Well, I'm not Mata Hari!
It's a standoff; they both reluctantly accept that the other is not to
blame. Then AM finds a note: "Will send Coast Guard for you in the
morning. Pleasant dreams, Lucy."

PARK: Lucy boasts about her skills in maneuvering Frank & Eleni together
& preventing AM from telling Eleni that Frank's doctor was a vet.
Nadine: Why should Eleni be upset that Frank's doctor is a vet?
Clayton is a VA Hospital; there are vets running all over there!"
Buzz explains the real deal. Lucy offers Buzz & Nadine their choice of
accomodations: the Spaulding penthouse, a bungalow by the beach, or rooms
at the Country Club. Nadine continues to press the idea of doing the game
show, but Buzz refuses to appear. He points out that they don't even meet
the rule that the couples must be married. Nadine thinks he's just
getting self-righteous because he doesn't want to be linked with her in
public. She tries to woo him with the possible prizes, but none of them
strike his fancy. Meanwhile, Lucy peruses a list of Spaulding vacation
spots & asks her dad where he'd go if he could go anywhere in the world.

LEWIS HOUSE: A tearful Jenna enters & apologizes for interrupting, but
she needs to talk to Henry. Van is very understanding. Jenna cries.

PARK: Buzz doesn't know where he'd like to go. Nadine says that's because
he's already been everywhere *without her.* Except to see the Northern
Lights. Buzz is amazed that she remembered he always wanted to see the
auroura borealis. She says it proves they should go on the show. Lucy
says she can send them to see the Northern Lights, compliments of Alex.
She explains her deal with Alex--use of Spaulding goodies in exchange for
keeping AM away from his lady love. As long as she can justify the
expense as being contributory to the end goal, it's OK. So, since Buzz &
Nadine can't go home, because Frank & Eleni need to be alone, they can go
anywhere that Spaulding owns. QED. She'll even spring for PJs & tooth-
brushes, but she doesn't know if she can justify food. Buzz realizes Lucy
is serious & gets interested. Lucy places a condition: he's got to go on
the TV interview with Nadine next day, "because she deserves it." Nadine
worries that she's not allowed to let Buzz leave the state; Lucy figures
as long as they stay in the jet, they're cool. Buzz asks Lucy to join
them, but she has to make sure AM gets rescued in the morning. Nadine
suddenly decides to play hard-to-get, but Buzz is able to twist her arm
into joining him. "I suppose it is my legal duty," she concedes.

LEWIS HOUSE: Jenna cries in Henry's arms & Van politely excuses herself.
Jenna laughs a bit at the idea of Henry fishing, but starts crying again
when she realizes he's going away. He hands her a hankie & asks her
what's wrong. She says it can wait until he gets back. He asks if her
news is good & bad. She says it's a little of both. She composes herself
& calls to Van that it's OK to return. Henry makes Jenna promise to call
him at Cross Creek if she needs anything. She gives him a little kiss &
leaves. Van returns & Henry says both women seem determined to deny their
bad feelings. Van says she doesn't see the purpose in giving in to bad
feelings. She outlines her plans for her time alone: business, Peter,
organizing the house, etc. HB barrels in to collect his crew. Van gives
Bill a final warning to wear his sunblock. She says good-bye to her dad,
then pulls a file from her briefcase. She gazes at some family photos on
her desk, sits back & wipes a tear from her eye.

COOPER HOUSE: Frank tells Eleni what it was like to be her husband.
Speaking very softly, he waxes quite eloquent on the subject of waking up
next to her still-sleeping form, which brings tears to Eleni's eyes. "I
want that back," he concludes. "So do I," agrees Eleni. They kiss like
they really mean it.

SPAULDING JET: A steward pours wine for Nadine & Buzz as he describes
what the chef has planned for them (light carrot ginger soup, a salad of
jicama and hearts of wild palm in a raspberry vinaigrette, Beef
Wellington, etc.) Nadine looks taken aback & starts to protest, but Buzz
says to cook the beef well-done & bring some claret from the Cote du
Rhone (although his pronunciation leaves a bit to be desired). The
steward goes to do Buzz's bidding. Nadine worries that Lucy said food
wasn't included, but Buzz says they shouldn't make the chef feel bad &
it's all for a good cause. They toast.

YACHT: AM searches in vain for help through binoculors. Tangie offers
food, but he's not hungry. They mutually apologize for suspecting one
another. Tangie wonders who Lucy is & if she was the intended recipient
of the flowers & candles. AM says no, so Tangie guesses Jenna. "I was
just expecting the rest of my life to be aboard this yacht tonight," AM
says. The power goes & AM has a fit. Tangie tries to calm him down by
pointing out that the moon is full & the wind is down, so they shouldn't
be too much of a danger or too hard to see. AM is not calmed, but Tangie
says it's better than worrying about some unsuspecting craft crashing
into them as they "drift aimlessly." AM doesn't care if he drowns or the
boat sinks. Tangie wisely suggests that the rest of AM's life could start
tomorrow instead of tonight, but he thinks he may have missed his second
& last chance. "I'm afraid that when I get back it's not going to be
there or be the same." Tangie understands.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni extricates herself from the little make-out session
on the hospital bed to check the door. There's a note from Lucy saying
that Buzz & Nadine won't be home tonight. She asks if he needs some help
getting ready for bed. He says he might. "From me?" she asks. He nods.
She smiles & approaches the bed again. He grabs her & pulls her onto his
lap. She worries about his leg, but he says it's fine & they kiss
passionately & profess their love for one another.

JET: After dinner, the steward leaves the Coopers alone. Nadine giggles &
asks Buzz in a whisper if the guy worked for Spaulding when Jenna ran the
show. Buzz doesn't know; he's never been on the plane before. He wants to
know why Nadine brought up Jenna & why they're whispering. Nadine just
wondered because after his apparent initial discomfort, he seemed like he
fit right in. She asks if he's ever wondered what life would have been
like if they'd been really rich. She rewrites their history & decides
that they wouldn't have had half the fights they ever had because they
were about money. Buzz is dubious about her logic, but doesn't argue the
point. She pushes the game show idea again, saying it would make them
feel like they were rich, even if they didn't win. She imagines the
prizes & says she hasn't bought herself anything new in so long; she's
tight with a dollar, like Frank, which is probably why he went to a
veterinarian instead of a people doctor when he broke his leg. (?!) Buzz
explains that Frank's leg isn't really broken & makes her promise not to
tell Eleni. Nadine thinks Buzz's idea was really sweet & she kisses him.

YACHT: Tangie asks AM why he thought Roger might have been behind the
adrift-setting. AM explains that Rog & his dad have a bad history. Tangie
has heard things like this about Rog before. She asks for some details &
AM volunteers that it goes back before he was born, but most recently Rog
was involved in sending Alan to jail. Tangie tries to empathize, but AM
confesses that although he & his dad write & he visits a couple of time a
year, his dad seems to think even that's too much, since he also helped
put Alan away. Tangie apologizes for judging AM too harshly. AM says it's
OK because he plans to get everything he wants as soon as he can. "If,
when the time comes, you have it in you to do that," replies Tangie.

COOPER HOUSE: As the puppy tries to get out of his box, Eleni & Frank
exult in their long-overdue, first post-Julie romp in the sack.

JET: The jet has landed on Baffin Island, just north of Hudson Bay. (It's
a large island in Canada's Northwest Territories, more than a thousand
miles north of the Great Lakes region. Much of the island is north of the
Arctic Circle.) N & B peer out the windows; Buzz sees trees & what looks
like a city beyond them. The steward says the lights are not a city &
they'll have a better view from a hill outside. Buzz asks for a couple of
blankets & the steward gets them.

STORE: Jenna brings a small box labeled "EXPECT" to the counter (a home
pregnancy test?). Lucy runs into her (Jenna discreetly hides the test
kit) & asks Jenna's advice on what kind of film to buy, but Jenna isn't
able to help. She offers to let Lucy go ahead of her, but Lucy declines &
continues the conversation. She notices that Jenna's lotion is out on the
counter. Lucy says Jenna will never guess where Nadine & Buzz are right
now. Jenna "would never presume to guess anything about those two."

COOPER HOUSE: "Know what I was thinking?" asks Eleni as she reties her
skirt. "Not bad for an old married man?" suggests Frank. "Not bad for a
man with a big cast," replies Eleni. She chases after the puppy, who is
still trying to escape from his box. She lifts the puppy (it's a *huge*
puppy; it's going to be a humongous dog when it grows up!) & carries it
to the bed. Although she thinks it sounds terrible, she tells Frank she's
glad he broke his leg. Frank understands her meaning. She worries some
more about his leg; Frank replies that if they keep it up, his leg will
be healed by tomorrow. "If your doctor only knew..." says Eleni. Frank
says Dr. Fromer doesn't shock too easily. They both cuddle the puppy
(Frank doesn't seem at all resentful that it's a gift from AM.) Close up
on the vet's card, which is now attached to the side of the puppy's box.

LEWIS HOUSE: Alone in bed, Vanessa tosses & turns. She turns on the light
& looks in her date book. There's a letter from Billy; she looks at the
envelope but doesn't open it. [At this point, my boyfriend entered the
room & asked what her problem was. I replied that her family was away &
her husband was in jail. "Why doesn't she masturbate? he suggested, then
dared me to include his comment in the update.] She gets out of bed &
looks at a bottle of prescription sleeping pills with Henry's name on the
label. The instructions are for 1 tablet at bedtime. Van opens the bottle
& shakes several into her hand, then examines them closely.

BAFFIN ISLAND: Nadine & Buzz lay on a blanket under the stars & gaze at
the auroura borealis. Buzz takes Deenie's hand.

STORE: Lucy tells Jenna she sent Buzz & Nadine to see the Northern
Lights. Jenna knows Buzz has always wanted to see this. The cashier shows
up. Jenna buys a bottle of her own lotion & leaves the preg test behind.

YACHT: Tangie holds a lantern & screams unsuccessfully for help from a
passing boat. AM shoots off a flare. "We're getting out of here if I have
to swim!" he vows.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni puts the puppy back in her box & says she has to get
her shots soon. She pulls the vet's card off the box & reads it, then
looks curiously at Frank, sound asleep in the hospital bed, as the screen
fades to black.
