GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 1997

                    TRIAL AND TRIBULATION

Highlights:
* Dinah & Hart make a new start.
* Alan & Abby testify for the prosecution in Reva's trial.
* Rick & Abby grow closer.
* Matt daydreams about Vanessa.
* Alan confronts Fran.

JESSUP FARMHOUSE: Hart & Dinah laze around in bed & cuddle after making
love. Dinah laughs & Hart starts to get a complex. She explains that
she's reminded of her days in college in Europe, when she spent most of
her time trying to get out of what she was supposed to do so she could
be bad. Hart says they're very different. She asks if she's too much for
him. He threatens to never leave their bed & starts kissing her in
earnest.

COURTROOM: Ross calls Alan to the stand. Alan swears to tell the truth
(!) and takes the stand.

COURTHOUSE HALLWAY: Billy tries to reassure Josh that everything will
work out. Josh knows better. He knows Alan is about to lie.

Roger chases Amanda to the elevator & congratulates her on her
testimony. Some of it sounded like an apology, for using her party to
try to hurt Blake. Amanda said she never realized before how important
Roger's children were to him, but now she knows.

COURTROOM: Ross asks Alan why he called Reva before the party. Alan said
he called her to inquire why she was behaving so peculiarly. He claims
to not recall her response. Ross asks if Alan invited Reva to the party.
Alan says he may have mentioned the party & suggested that they talk,
but he didn't specifically invite her to the party. Griffin keeps Reva
from jumping up to denounce Alan as a damned liar.

Ross asks Alan to recall the night Reva pushed Annie down the stairs,
killing her unborn baby. Griff objects, restating his earlier objection
that Ross is drawing conclusions on matters that are in dispute, and is
sustained. Abby steps out as Josh enters the courtroom. Ross continues
his questioning. Alan says he saw Annie & Reva having a heated argument.
He saw Reva chase Annie up the stairs, and then he saw Reva push Annie
down the stairs. Ross asks if Alan saw Reva before she argued with
Annie. Yes, says Alan. He saw Reva & Josh together, kissing. Ross cedes
the witness to Griff.

FARMHOUSE: Hart brings Dinah some stale crackers. They've been in his
cupboard since she left. Dinah says all bachelors are the same. Matt's
got old pizza with green stuff growing on it in his fridge. Hart says
it's not easy being single. Dinah says her mom always kept the fridge
stocked. Everyone used to end up in the kitchen. Hart says every house
needs a woman's touch. He's missed her so much. He asks her to move in
with him. She says they already tried that & it didn't work. Hart thinks
they can make it work this time. They kiss.

COURTHOUSE HALLWAY: Abby sees Rick & asks him why he's still there,
since he already testified. He says her turn is coming up, so he thought
he'd stick around. He knows how tough it is. Abby wishes she didn't have
to testify. That's why Rick wants to be there for her. He offers to walk
into the courtroom with her when it's time. She accepts, and admits how
much she wants to help Reva, and how nervous she is. Rick accompanies
her into the courtroom.

Josh walks away from the door. Billy says he's got to go back in & sit
with Annie. Josh doesn't think he can do it anymore. Billy reminds him
that he's got to follow through if they want to get Reva acquitted. Josh
knows Alan is making Reva look really bad right now. Billy says it will
get better when Griff gets his turn. Josh hates having to pretend that
he's on Annie's side. Billy tells him to hang in there. He's going to
check in with Rusty & see what he's dug up.

COURTROOM: Josh returns to Annie's side as Griffin asks Alan about
seeing Reva & Josh kissing. Alan's "not for sure" who was kissing whom.
Griffin asks for a description of the kiss: was it passionate or
friendly. Alan says he was surprised to see Reva at the party & kissing
Josh Lewis. "Surprised or jealous?" asks Griff. Ross objects & is
sustained. Griff goes over Alan's history with Reva--bringing her back
to Springfield after her disappearance, their close relationship, her
marriage to Buzz. Griff asks if Alan still holds resentment toward Reva.
Alan says he doesn't think about her either way. Griff says Alan knew
about Reva's search for her sister. Alan says Annie told him about
Reva's wild accusations.

Griffin asks if Alan knows the LaFontaine family. Alan says he doesn't
recall them. Griff finds this odd, since Mr. LaFontaine is the recipient
of Spaulding's latest acquisition to date. Alan claims not to know the
details of every Spaulding deal. Griff asks if it's true that Alan
bribed Mr. LaFontaine to give Reva false information about her sister.
Ross objects that this has nothing to do with the case. Griff asks the
judge if they may approach the bench, then explains that his line of
questioning will quickly become relevant, since the case against Reva is
based on Annie's fabrications. The judge says Griff will have the
opportunity to make his case later; right now he has to stick to cross-
examination. The judge also warns Griff that he'd better have witnesses
to back up his accusations. The lawyers back up.

In the audience, Holly reminds Blake that she can straighten this entire
mess out.

Griffin returns to Alan. He asks about his relationship to Annie. Alan
says Annie was his nurse when he was paralyzed & worked very hard to
rehabilitate him. Griffin suggests that Alan must feel grateful to
Annie. Alan says Annie was paid very well for her services. Griffin
suggests that Alan & Annie's relationship was "physical" by definition.
Alan claims not to understand the question. Griffin says Alan & Annie
worked very closely together, alone. Griffin says that it's not unusual
for a patient to become emotionally involved with his physical
therapist. Alan admits that he & Annie are friends. Griffin asks whether
Alan went out of his way to hire Annie after she was suspended from
Cedars due to her addiction. Alan says he hired Annie because he knew
she was an excellent nurse, and everyone deserves a 2nd chance.

Griffin asks whether, as friends, he & Annie confided in each other. Did
Annie confide to Alan about her marriage? Ross objects & is sustained.
The judge asks Griff to get to the point. Griff says he means to show
that Alan & Annie became so close that Alan would be willing to lie for
her. "Isn't that true, Mr. Spaulding?" Annie looks worried.

Griffin asks Alan what he & Annie talked about when they worked
together. Politics, current events, etc., says Alan. Griff asks whether
Annie mentioned how she happened to find out that Reva had a long-lost
sister. Alan says no. Griff starts to suggest that Annie needed help in
laying a trail in order to pose as Reva's long-lost sister. Ross
objects, saying Griffin is making accusations without evidence.
Sustained. The judge warns Griffin to stay on track.

Griffin asks again if Alan would lie for Annie. Alan says Annie is one
of the most remarkable women he has ever known. He admires her & thinks
she's generous & kind. He would do anything he could to help Annie. But
he's never found it necessary to lie for Annie. Griff asks Alan how he's
feeling. Alan says he's fine. Griff asks why Alan rehired Annie as his
nurse. Ross objects, and Griff withdraws the question and sits.

Holly asks Blake if Annie & Alan were having an affair. Blake wouldn't
put it past her.

Ross redirects. He reminds the jury that the trial is only about one
thing, then asks Alan if he saw Reva push Annie down the stairs. Yes, he
days. Ross is finished with Alan & calls Abby. Rick gives her some
encouragement as she stands.

COURTHOUSE HALLWAY: The press crowds around Alan as he exits the
courtroom. Alan sees Billy & says he keeps forgetting Billy is out of
jail. Billy says it was worth every minute for the satisfaction of
shooting Roger. "You kind of remind me of him." Billy walks away. Alan
ignores the reporters & goes to the pay phone. He remembers kissing
Annie, then calls Fran to set up a meeting.

COURTROOM: Ross asks Abby to describe her relationship with Reva. Abby
says they're best friend. Ross asks if Abby knew about Reva's search for
her sister & her belief that Annie was that sister. Abby says yes, that
was why Reva ended her relationship with Josh, because she didn't want
to hurt her sister. Ross asks the judge to tell Abby to limit her
answers to the questions being posed. The judge obliges. Ross states
that they are treating Abby as a hostile witness. Abby says she's not
hostile; she's answering the questions truthfully.

Abby testifies that Annie never told her she knew Reva was looking for
her sister, and Annie never told her that she was Reva's sister, but she
knew that Annie had told Reva that she shouldn't tell Josh they were
sisters. Ross gets Abby to admit that all her information comes from
Reva. Ross asks if Reva went to Annie's doctor's office. [He doesn't
face Abby when he asks this, and has to be reminded that she's deaf. He
apologizes & asks the question again, facing her.] Abby says Reva went
because she thought Annie might be lying about the paternity of her
child & how far along she was in her pregnancy. She wanted to get proof
from the medical records. Ross asks if Abby knew Reva wore a disguise
when she went to the doctor's. Abby says yes, but how else could she get
the information when her face is plastered all over the newspapers?

Ross asks if Abby thinks Reva is obsessed with Annie. Griff objects, but
the judge overrules. Abby says Reva only wanted to find the truth, and
Annie led her on a wild goose chase for her sister. Ross asks if Abby
knows this as fact. No, admits Abby, but Reva says... Ross says Reva
could tell Abby anything & Abby would believe her. Abby says she would
believe Reva, unless she thought Reva was lying. But she admits that she
doesn't always know when people are lying to her.

Ross asks if Abby saw Reva follow Annie up the stairs. Abby says yes.
Ross asks what she saw next. "I saw Annie fall," says Abby. "But that
doesn't mean she was pushed." Ross asks if Abby is saying that Annie
purposely threw herself down the stairs. No, says Abby, but there could
be another explanation. Ross asks again what she saw at the top of the
stairs. "I saw what appeared to be Reva pushing her, but..." Ross cuts
her off. He asks if she saw Rick attend to Annie after the fall. She
says yes. He asks if Rick asked Abby to keep Reva away from Annie.
Didn't Reva try to get at Annie after she fell? Abby says Reva wanted
Annie to stop saying that Reva had pushed her down the stairs. She
admits that Rick wanted her to keep Reva from making a bad situation
worse. She went to the hospital with Reva after the accident. Reva was
very upset. Ross asks if Reva was upset about Annie. Griff objects &
Ross withdraws the question. He asks if Abby went to the hospital to
keep Reva from harassing Annie. Griff objects again & is sustained.

Ross asks if Rick declared the baby dead after they got to the hospital.
Abby says she doesn't remember exactly, then says she was there the
night the baby was declared dead. Ross is finished & Griffin has no
questions for Abby. The judge calls a recess and Rick follows Abby
through the crowd out of the courtroom.

FARMHOUSE: Dinah & Hart peruse the real estate section of the paper &
Dinah wants to check out a few places. Hart says he has to pick up
Peter, so Dinah decides to go alone. They agree to meet at Company in 2
hours. They kiss & agree that they're really goin gto make it happen.
Dinah's beeper goes off. She decides not to answer the call from WSPR.
They kiss some more & Dinah says she's so happy. She wishes her mother
could see how happy she is.

COURTHOUSE HALLWAY: Abby & Rick push through the reporters. Rick tells
them no comment as Abby hurries to the elevator. He meets her there. She
feels so ashamed of herself because she wanted to help Reva, not hurt
her. Rick says Abby told the truth. Abby wishes she could have lied.
Rick says they both know what lies do. "I'm sorry," cries Abby, as Rick
holds her.

COURTROOM: Ross is glad that Blake is still there. She says she's very
proud of him. He says he's not enjoying his job. It's hard when people's
lives are affected by the outcome. The only bright spot was seeing
Blake. Blake smiles uncomfortably.

HALLWAY: Amanda returns & tells Roger he's been getting several calls
from a woman in Switzerland who wouldn't leave her name, just a phone
number. She asks if Rog is playing hard-to-get again. He says it's a
story she wouldn't believe.

COURTROOM: Reva tells Griff that there must be a way to undermine
Annie's credibility. Griff says they're not finished yet.

Annie hopes Josh doesn't believe there was anything personal going on
between her & Alan. They walk out of the courtroom & Josh beats off the
reporters. Josh tells Annie not to worry about Alan. "Usually a good
jury can tell when a witness is lying."

PARK: Fran arrives to meet Alan. She asks where Annie is. Alan says from
now on, Fran is dealing only with him.

COURTHOUSE HALLWAY: Roger tries to call Van on his cell phone, but
there's no answer. Her room is empty.

UNFINISHED HOUSE: Matt walks through the beams & says he's going to
finish the house for Vanessa. They will be so happy there. He imagines a
reunion with her. He knew she was alive. She admits that she & Tess are
one and the same. He makes her promise never to leave him again. She
says she never really left him at all. They hug.

Dinah steps into the house & Matt hears her behind him. "Vanessa?" he
asks.

PARK: Fran says Annie has put her through hell & she deserves
reimbursement. Alan says Annie wants her gone. Fran says if he gives her
the money, they'll never see her again. Alan says he has it right here,
and there's more waiting if she's interested. Fran asks if he wants her
to do something else. Alan says he'll tell her exactly what to do.

COURTHOUSE HALLWAY: Abby thanks Rick for being there for her. Rick says
there's nowhere else he'd rather be. Abby says she misses him too,
but... Rick shushes her. He's waited so long to hear those words from
her. He kisses her gently. When she doesn't pull away, he goes for the
gusto.

COURTROOM: Blake tells Ross a cute story about the twins. Ross says she
always seems to know what he needs. He appreciates her taking his mind
off the trial for a little while. Blake asks how sure he is of winning.
He says unless there's new evidence, the only question is how long Reva
will spend in jail. He says he'll see her tonight, after court.

HALLWAY: Annie joins Josh on a bench & says he's up next. She wishes it
hadn't come to this. Josh asks what she means. Annie says Reva has to
pay, for the sake of their child's life. Ross comes over & asks if Josh
is ready. He says yes. Annie goes back inside & Josh goes over to Billy.
He's changed his mind about not wanting to take the witness stand. He's
going to tell the truth. He can't keep pretending to be on Annie's side.
"I'm going to tell the whole world the way it was," he vows, as the
screen fades to black.
