Sorry this is so late... busy weekend!

GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 1996

DOES THE APPLE FALL FAR FROM THE TREE?

Written by Roger Newman and directed by Bruce S. Barry

Highlights:
* Griffin cannot tell a lie to Charles, but Viv can.
* Gilly learns she's been a sap.
* AM & Lucy think someone's been nesting in the lighthouse.
* Abby thinks Alan's a peach, but learns that he's rotten to the core.
* Dahlia branches out & meets up with a cherry-picker.
* Marcus goes out of his tree with worry.

CEDARS: Griff tries to convince Viv that telling Charles about their
affair is the right thing to do. After all, they love each other. Viv
can't bear the thought of hurting Charles. "It would kill him," she
declares. Griff thinks Charles will find out sooner or later & it's
better if he hears it from them. Just then, Charles enters, delighted to
see his pal Griff. Viv says Griff just came by to say hi, but Griff says
he needs to talk to Charles. Viv thinks it would be inappropriate to
have a private conversation in such a public place. She asks Griff not
to do this. Charles wants to know what's going on.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan, on the phone, discusses some deals on the 5th
St. project. They've secured a property on 3rd St. & now he wants 4th
St. After he hangs up, Alex enters & informs Alan that his son & Lucy
have disappeared, along with all their possessions. Alan says they've
moved out. "What have you done now?" asks Alex.

DINER: Buzz, Reva & Eleni discuss the legal loophole in the foreclosure
notice & hope Alan won't discover it until it's too late. Lucy & AM
enter; Buzz tells them not to try offering another handout. Lucy says
everything has changed. AM says they are both on the Cooper side now &
will do whatever it takes to stop Alan & save 5th St.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex asks what happened between AM & Alan. They were
getting along so well. Alan says AM overheard him talking to Amanda.
Alex is not surprised that Fifi is involved. Alan takes all the blame on
himself & admits he was gloating over getting AM back in the fold &
winning against the Coopers. "How could you be so stupid?" wonders Alex.
Alan says he feels bad enough already without her help. Alex thinks he
should be out trying to fix things. She doesn't understand Alan's
feelings about his son at all. Alan says it's too late & he is too busy
right now. Besides AM isn't the only loved one he lost. "I'm going to
get her back," he vows.

DINER: AM fills the Coopers in on his revelations about his father. Buzz
& AM shake hands. Between the loophole & the younger Spauldings on their
side, Reva thinks they can't lose. Team Cooper exchanges a round of high
fives. Michelle enters, looking for Dahlia. Eleni explains that Dahlia
doesn't want any company right now. Michelle thinks maybe she can help
take Dahlia's mind off her troubles, but Eleni is firm. She promises to
tell Dahlia that Michelle stopped by. Michelle leaves.

Upstairs, Dahlia plays a music box & looks at herself in the mirror. She
seems sad, but determined. She undresses & stares at herself in the
mirror again. Then she pulls on a short pair of denim cutoffs, cuts the
bottom off a flowered tank top & dons that as well. She makes up her
face, complete with a little beauty mark on her left cheek, then
contemplates the overall look in a full-length mirror. She looks like
very pretty, very young streetwalker.

CEDARS: Griff starts to say that he hates having to tell Charles this,
but Viv interrupts to say that she wants to tell him. "Griffin made a
pass at me," she says. She rebuffed him & didn't want to tell Charles,
but Griff insisted. Charles is shocked & hopes that this is all an
unfunny joke. Viv is sorry, but it's true. She urges Griff to confirm
her story. Griff turns away without saying anything. Viv says Griff felt
so guilty he couldn't live with himself. She says it's all over & they
should forget about it. Charles can't do that. Neither can Griff.

BOARDINGHOUSE, EXTERIOR: Marcus plays a sad tune on his sax. Nola runs
outside to ask him to stop, because she just put Peter down for a nap.
She asks Marcus if he's all right. He says she doesn't want to hear
about his problems. They go inside together & Nola expresses interest in
Marcus's problems, since they might take her mind off her own. She
guesses girl trouble. "What's new?" agrees Marcus. He also cites
disappointment with his dad. "The guy's a total fraud," he asserts. Nola
guesses that Marcus is mad at Griff about something in particular. She
thinks Griff's image must be very hard to live up to. Marcus thinks
Griff's words about what is moral & immoral are just that. "His entire
life has just been a lie."

CEDARS: "I can't live a lie," says Griff. Viv says she can't either &
that's why she told Charles. Charles is disgusted at Griff's betrayal.
"How could you sink to something like this?" He doesn't understand
Griff's motivations & wants an explanation. Griff doesn't have one. "I
just want you to know that I never intended to hurt you." Enter Gilly,
who wants to know how Griff hurt her dad.

DINER: AM says he & Lucy have to get going. Buzz & Reva are curious
about where they're going, but AM wants to keep it a mystery for Lucy.
They run into Abigail on their way out. Reva doesn't even recognize her
at first, but when she does, she exclaims over Abby's clothes & hair.
Abby likes Reva's new do, too. They talk about the wonders of New York &
how friendly we New Yorkers are. Abby is excited about her new computer
skills & is going to see Alan after she leaves the diner. Buzz groans &
Abby says she realizes Buzz doesn't like Alan, but she thinks he's
basically a good man. Reva is very proud of Abby, but doesn't like the
idea of her working for Alan. "There are some things we need to tell you
about your new boss."

DINER ALLEY: Dahlia climbs out the bedroom window a la Harley & runs
into Michelle, who was looking for a way to get in to see Dahlia.
Michelle asks about Dahlia's clothes & D gets defensive. M says her dad
or brother would never let her out in public dressed like that [hah!
I've seen her in way sluttier outfits!] D says she has no father,
brother or mother, & she doesn't care about M's opinion. She also has no
time for M. M says she came to talk about Marcus. He cares about D a lot
& is really worried about her. D says her message to him is that she
doesn't need his concern & she's out of his life. M says she can't relay
this message. D says she should just tell him that she's a big girl &
can take care of herself. "Tell him I'm my mother's daughter." Dahlia
turns & walks away, leaving Michelle looking worried.

DINER: Buzz & Reva explain that Alan will do anything to get what he
wants. Abby says she's seen his good side too. They suggest she talk to
AM, but Abby knows the two have problems. Buzz says Alan manipulates
people, uses them & then throws them away. But he sent me to NY, points
out Abby. Reva suggests it was to get her out of the way while he worked
on Reva. Buzz tells her all about Alan's plans for 5th St. Abby can't
believe it. Reva worries about what will happen when Abby outlives her
usefulness for Alan. Buzz gets an idea--why not have Abby spy for them?
Reva doesn't want to put Abby at risk. Buzz agrees--Abby should just
quit. Abby says it's her decision to make & she will think about it.
They say their good-byes & Abby leaves. Reva & Buzz worry about her.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex thinks Reva is more important to Alan than his
son & daughter-in-law. Alan says he is trying to rectify his mistakes,
but it will take time. Alex says I-told-you-so & hopes he'll pay more
attention to her advice in the future. She exits & nettie enters with a
package for Alan. Inside is Brandon's ring. Alan remembers giving it to
AM before his wedding & broods.

LIGHTHOUSE: Lucy asks why AM wanted to come here. AM says he felt drawn
somehow. He's looking for answers, but doesn't know the questions. He
remembers how their dads worked together to help rescue them from Brent
& even gained some respect for each other. How did it all fall apart?
Lucy says they're both strong, stubborn men. AM worries that he is like
Alan, but Lucy assures him that he isn't capable of doing horrible
things to innocent people. "Why do I feel like I cut my right hand off?"
asks AM. "Maybe I'm more my father's son than I realize."

CEDARS: Gilly wants to know what's going on. Viv wants to discuss it
later, but Charles fills Gilly in. Gilly doesn't believe that Griff made
a pass at Viv. Viv says it's true. Charles hates to see their friendship
end, but he can't forgive this. He tells Viv he'll see her at home.
Charles leaves. Griff stares at Viv for a moment, then Viv leaves too.

Gilly confronts Griff. What about the woman he was seeing from out of
town? Why would he make a pass at Viv? Griff says it's a lie. "I didn't
do anything to your mother!" Gilly doesn't get it at all. Griff says
it's very complicated. Gilly thinks it's related to his relationship
with Viv all those years ago & she still hates Griff & wants to make him
look bad. Griff says Gilly doesn't understand at all. Gilly thinks she
understands perfectly. Viv returns & Gilly accuses her, "You are a liar
& I'm going to tell Daddy about it." Viv stares at Griff in dismay.

Viv grabs Gilly & says she has to listen. Gilly just wants to tell her
dad the truth. Griff steps in & says Viv had a reason for what she did.
He asks for some time alone with Viv. Gilly wants to know what's going
on. Griff doesn't want to come between Gilly & Viv. He says he'll meet
up with her at the office. After Gilly's gone, Viv explodes at Griff.
She wanted to handle this her way. Griff thinks her lie has now made
everything more difficult for them. Viv blames it on Griff for backing
her into a corner. He doesn't buy this, but lets it go. "Take all the
time you want, but in the meantime, don't come knocking on my door."

They are both exasperated. Finally, Griff says that Viv is very
important to him & he wants her in his life. "I want to marry you." Viv
is on the verge of tears & asks if he really means it. Griff says he
does, & he doesn't want to sneak around anymore. He's upset that he's
lost his son's respect. His beeper goes off & he says he has to go. But
before he leaves, he tells her he's serious about the two of them, but
she has to stay away until she's sure what she wants. Viv's chin
trembles. "If it's me, come back committed, or don't come back at all."
Griff leaves. Viv sighs.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Nola says she has made her kids angry, but she knows they
still love her. And she knows how proud Griff is of Marcus. Marcus
starts to say that it's not the same, but Michelle enters & catches his
attention. Oddly, she greets her Aunt Nola as "Mrs. Chamberlain." "Don't
call me that," replies Nola. She adds that J isn't in. Michelle says she
came to see Marcus. Nola excuses herself & Marcus thanks her. Then he
asks Michelle what happened with Dahlia. Michelle recounts her encounter
with Dahlia in the alley. "She was dressed... kind of tacky."
Reluctantly, she relays Dahlia's message, which causes Marcus to start
out in pursuit of D. Michelle stops him & repeats that Dahlia doesn't
want to see him, and the bit about being her mother's daughter. After
ascertaining that Michelle doesn't know where D was headed, Marcus runs
out of the boardinghouse.

DIVE-TYPE BAR: Dahlia enters & brushes her way through the crowd of
skinhead biker types. The Hooker Most Recently Thrown Out Of The Diner
spots Dahlia & asks what she's doing there. She thinks this is no place
for D & she should go back to the diner. Dahlia tells her to buzz off. A
tough-but-cute black guy joins the girls & expresses interest in Dahlia.
THMRTOOTD, now identified as Irene, calls him Junior & tells him to get
lost because D is just a kid, but D says she can speak for herself.
Junior thinks she looks pretty grown up. Irene gives up & departs.

Junior offers to buy Dahlia a drink & she asks for a cola. He orders her
a Rob Roy instead, heavy on the Rob. He tells Dahlia she's picked a real
friendly place with friendly people. Her drink arrives & she sips it,
almost gagging. Junior suggests a game of pinball & says he's a good
teacher. He stands behind her at the pinball machine & runs his hands
down her arms. His continual rubbing of her shoulders, etc., makes it
difficult for Dahlia to succeed at the game. She thinks she would be
better off if she played alone. Junior says some things are more fun
with two. He embraces her & she pulls away. She tries to leave, but
another guy grabs her & pulls her onto his lap. She tries to get away.
Junior tells Jack that D is with him, so hands off. Jack disappears.

The bartender asks D if she's OK. She says she can take care of herself.
The bartender asks if he heard Irene mention that she is Tina's
daughter. D admits to this. The bartender heard she went upstate &
guesses, with some regret, that D is following in her mom's footsteps. D
says yes. She asks if the bartender knew Tina. He did. So did Junior,
and Junior says if D is half what her mother was... He suggests they go
somewhere to find out.

LIGHTHOUSE: Lucy says AM could never be like his father. AM's not so
sure--he has the same genes. Lucy reminds him that his mom's a Bauer.
She guesses that he feels pulled in all sorts of directions. Everyone
has good & bad in them & the work is to make the good win out. She has
felt the power of AM's goodness & knows it will win in the end. AM wants
to believe her & promises to try. They kiss & hug. Over Lucy's shoulder,
something catches AM's eye.

DINER: Griff enters with news for Buzz--he's learned that Alan
discovered the loophole & refiled the papers. Reva wonders how Alan
could have found out. Griff suggests that someone tipped him off. They
try to think who it could be. Buzz remembers that Abby was there earlier
& they mentioned it in front of her. Reva thinks Abby wouldn't do that,
but realizes Alan could have gotten it out of her. She vows to kill Alan
if he's using Abby. She, Buzz & Griff all rush out of the diner.

SPAULDING MANSION: Abby wants to know Alan's side of the Advantage
Systems story. She's already told him what she learned from Reva & Buzz.
Alan admits that what they told her was true. Abby is horrified. Alan
says if he could undo it, he would, but he's signed contracts. Abby
doesn't care about contracts--it's people who are important. The people
in Goshen would never act this way. Abby wonders why Alan changed from
the way he was in Goshen. Alan smiles at her naivete. He says Goshen
isn't the real world, which is very harsh & unforgiving, requiring
difficult decisions that sometimes make people unhappy.

Abby has had enough. "You're using a lot of big words & elaborate
explanations, which you don't think I understand because my world is not
as real to you as your own. But it is to me. My parents & my religion
gave me... a strong sense of what is right & what is wrong." She says
she can't work for Alan--it would be wrong for her. Alan says she
shouldn't be so hasty--it's not so easy for deaf people to find work.
Abby is sure she can find a job that is right for her. She promises to
repay Alan for all the training & things he's bought for her as soon as
she can. She leaves & Alan sighs.

Vivian enters & tells Alan she can no longer work for him behind the
backs of the 5th Street committee.

LIGHTHOUSE: A discarded take-out container leads AM & Lucy to conclude
that someone has been squatting in the lighthouse. AM knows his uncle Ed
isn't renting it to anyone. AM suggests they head back into town. They
have a lot of work cut out for them. They kiss & leave. Bracelet man
watches from behind a doorway.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan reminds Viv that she has money in the project
too & she is the only person Alan knows with an "in" on 5th St. Reva,
Buzz & Griff barge in. Reva announces that they know who his spy is.

DINER: Irene rushes in, looking for Eleni, who reminds her that it's
still a family place & leads her none-too-gently to the door. Irene
tries to tell Eleni that she needs to talk to her about Dahlia, but
Eleni shuts the door in her face & doesn't hear her. Marcus, who was
heading for the diner, does hear her, & says he's very worried about
Dahlia & asks what Irene knows. She tells him that Dahlia just showed up
at the club her mother used to work on 9th St. Marcus thanks her &
rushes off.

9TH STREET: Dahlia tells Junior to let her go--he's hurting her. Junior
says she should relax & enjoy & goes for her again. Dahlia has changed
her mind & wants to go home, but Junior says she made an offer & he's
buying. He backs her up against a wall & she screams as the screen fades
to black.
