GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 1995

HIGHLIGHTS
* Roger finds Viktor's Achilles heel.
* Holly asks a special favor of Ed.
* Brent's sister threatens the Coopers.
* Dinah cracks under pressure.

Just before the Fourth in Springfield (Massachusetts?!), USA...

DINER: Buzz is on the phone with Andrew from the Spaulding yacht, trying
to determine Lucy's whereabouts. He leaves a message for Lucy to phone
home. Frank suggests a visit to the yacht, but Eleni dissuades him. She
thinks AM & Lucy are laying low to avoid the press. She goes to finish
the food for a catering job. Buzz worries that Lucy is covering for AM in
the Brent shooting. Frank still doesn't trust AM, since he's still Alan's
son. Buzz reminds Frank, "You're an improvement over the old model. Maybe
he is too."

AM walks Lucy to the door. She feels like she's deserting him, but he
thinks she needs time alone with her family & knows they still don't love
him. Lucy assures him that they know how much he's helped her & they're
grateful. They enter the diner together. "It's about time," says Buzz.

POLICE STATION: Dinah cries to Vanessa & Ross about how terrible her
ordeal was. "Viktor is a sadist. He doesn't care who he hurts!" Van hugs
her daughter with relief. Blake watches skeptically. Van asks if Matt is
OK. "He was fine when I left," Dinah replies, adding that *she* was the
one Vik kept threatening. Van hugs her again, then Dinah runs to her dad
for a hug, too.

Thanks to a tracking device placed in the getaway car, Levy & Cutter are
able to watch Viktor & Matt's progress on a computer screen. They're
heading north out of Springfield on Country Club Drive. The cops are
"following" on a parallel road about 1/4 mile back. Van worries whether
the cops will be able to do anything to help Matt if Viktor does
something to threaten him. Cutter says that's the idea. The car is headed
for the mountains. Roger takes Van aside & tells her that Pachinov's trip
may come to an end much sooner than anyone expects.

[The map on the computer shows Springfield as being on the east bank of a
river (no lake in sight). Across the river is West Springfield. Further
west is Mittineague. North along the river are Merrick, Cayenne, Chicopee
& Ashleyville. Southwest are North Agawam, O'Brien's Corner, West Agawam
& Holland. Southeast is something called The X. Northeast is Ludlow.
Strangely, Clayton isn't shown on the map at all! At the north edge of
the map, Interstates 90 and 91 intersect, with I-291 shooting off I-91
out of West Springfield and heading northeast. I-91 seems to run south
right through Springfield. Those of you who live in New England already
know what I'm about to tell the rest of you--according to my trusty AAA
map of the US, I-90 & I-91 intersect right near--you guessed it--Spring-
field, Massachusetts! I-91 runs along the Connecticut River (renamed
Westfield River on the computer map), & I'm pretty sure at least some of
those towns (especially Agawam & Chicopee) are in the Springfield, MA
vicinity, since I've driven through many times on my way up 91 to
Vermont. But don't get too excited & decide that Springfield has suddenly
migrated from the Midwest to the east--TPTB are playing with our heads,
because the computer map also shows an east-west route marked I-20. In
reality, I-20 starts in South Carolina & runs west through Georgia,
Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana & Texas. Ahh--another wild goose chase.
Wasn't that fun?]

GETAWAY CAR: Viktor holds a gun to Matt's head & yells at him to drive
faster. Matt claims he's already got the pedal floored. After a brief
silence, Matt asks what Viktor's plan is. "Once we get out of town, are
you going to kill me?" Vik says yes, as soon as he makes sure they're not
being followed. Matt suggests that he may as well drive the car off the
road & kill them both. Vik says he won't do it, because no one really
wants to die. Vik gets concerned when he hears a buzzing sound in the
car. [It sounds like a wasp.] Matt says he doesn't hear it. Vik gets very
upset: "It can't be... NO!!!"

DINER: Everyone's thrilled to see Lucy. She apologizes for not calling.
Frank asks AM what the police are charging him with. "Nothing," replies
AM. Buzz sends Frank & Eleni off with Lucy for a slice of spanikopita
(spinach pie). Buzz tells AM that he really appreciates all AM has done
for Lucy, but he thinks they should take a break from each other for
awhile. "I think she needs her family," Buzz says. AM agrees, to Buzz's
surprise. But he has a question: how well equipped are the Coopers to
protect Lucy? Buzz takes this to mean that Brent may still be alive. AM
thinks it's possible. Buzz sits him down in a booth & asks him straight
out, "You killed the creep, didn't you? And then you dumped his body in
the water." Brent's sister is listening from a booth across the aisle.

BAUER PATIO: Rick plays air guitar to Stone Temple Pilots. Ed says it's
one of Eve's CDs. They work on untangling the volleyball net. Ed's got
all the BBQ decorations out & ready to put up. Rick thinks the Lewises
ought to have the party once in a while. "They're so cheap!" Rick
insists. :-) Ed wishes Rick had been around last year--things got off to
a bumpy start. He recalls all the disagreements he & Eve had last year
while preparing for the BBQ (she cleaned the sacred grill, she wore the
skimpy suit, she dumped him in the Jacuzzi; he remembers it all in very
accurate detail). Ed gets a little teary-eyed as he remembers Eve's
revenge--descending on the gathered guests in her ankle-to-chin getup,
making him look like a total jackass. Rick appreciates the memory. He
invites his dad out to dinner along with his friends. Ed tries to
decline, but Rick won't take no for an answer.

POLICE STATION: Rog says the situation is not as dire as it looks.
"Pachinov has this little medical problem," Rog tells her. He assumes
Matt is pretty quick on his feet & Van confirms. "I can almost guarantee
he's going to be OK," Rog says. Van looks puzzled.

Ross comforts & feeds Dinah. Blake notes that poor Matt is still out
there with Viktor. Dinah bleats that she tried to convince Vik to take
her instead, but Matt insisted. Cutter asks whether Dinah needs a doctor.
She says no, she's just tired. Cutter says he needs a statement about her
abduction & captivity. But first, can she tell them anything about Vik's
plans? She has no clue. "I'm afraid he's going to kill him, though," she
says with true concern.

GETAWAY CAR: Vik demands to know where the buzzing sound is coming from.
Matt doesn't know. Viktor thinks it's a bee inside the car. He tries to
open a window, but it's locked. He tells Matt to open the window. Matt
says he sees the bee on the dashboard. Viktor tries to whack it with his
free hand. Matt grabs Viktor's gun arm with his right hand & forces it
upward while trying to keep control the car with his left hand. The car
careens back & forth across the highway.

DINER: At the counter, Lucy tells Frank & Eleni that she's a lot stronger
than she used to be. She's worried about AM. The whole thing with Brent
was in self-defense. Frank thinks AM's story doesn't add up. He thinks AM
threw Brent's body in the river during the time AM & Lucy were separated.
Lucy says that doesn't make sense--AM had nothing to hide. Frank looks
dubious. "Why don't you believe me?" asks Lucy.

In the booth, AM tells Buzz that he didn't dispose of Brent's body. His
hypothesis: someone was watching the whole thing, & when AM & Lucy left
Brent alone, that person dragged Brent to the end of the pier. That's
where the blood trail led. Brent's sister listens, stony-faced. AM thinks
whoever did this figured the current would carry Brent's body away from
the pier, where divers couldn't find it. Buzz wonders if Brent was alive
or dead at the time. AM figures whoever did it didn't care much--if Brent
was still alive, he would certainly drown in the water. Buzz asks if AM
has any idea who might have done this. Yes, says AM. It was someone who
was angry at Brent & wanted Brent to pay for what he had done to Lucy.
Somebody so hell-bent on getting Brent that he tailed Brent night & day,
to the point where a restraining order was issued against him. [Are you
getting AM's drift here, folks?] "Not that I would blame that person if
he did," adds AM. "I'm thinking someone a lot like you, Buzz." Buzz
smiles faintly.

POLICE STATION: In his office, in the presence of Ross, Van & Blake,
Cutter asks Dinah how she knows Viktor. Dinah says they met in Europe 2
years ago & were acquaintances. She describes him as a hanger-on who
seemed to have a crush on her & liked to do her favors, like lend her
cash or drive her around when her car broke down. But he wasn't Dinah's
type--she always thought he was kind of creepy. Ross wants to take Dinah
home, but Cutter wants to make sure she wasn't part of a conspiracy.
Blake sports a knowing look. Ross thinks Cutter's suggestion is
ridiculous. Dinah asks innocently if Cutter thinks she played a part in
her own kidnapping. Cutter reminds them all that Dinah stole $75,000 from
the 5th St. Ball. Ross defends his daughter--she was trying to save her
life from a psychopath. Cutter asks point-blank if Dinah denies
conspiracy. She evades the question by saying it was the worst experience
of her life & she thought Vik would kill her. She wants to wash up &
Cutter directs her to the rest room. When she's gone, Ross tells Cutter
he's nuts to think Dinah was involved in the kidnapping. Cutter says one
person in the room thinks it's a strong possibility & he'd be derelict in
his duty if he didn't investigate. From the squad room, Levy yells that
the car is slowing down. Everyone rushes out. Levy points out the
location on the map. In the background, Roger looks quite sure of
himself. The car is slowing to a stop.

GETAWAY CAR: As the car careens back & forth, Vik demands that Matt let
his arm go. Matt does, & regains control of the car. Meanwhile, Vik is
swatting around the car, trying to kill the bee. Matt says he thinks he
hears 5 or 6 bees; maybe a whole hive. Vik is in a panic. "Get it off
me!" he screams. Matt hits the brake & a shot rings out.

BAUER PATIO: Ed & Rick wheel out the grill & Ed worries about traffic
flow. They move it to the other end of the pool, but Ed is still not
happy. They argue over the ridiculous thing & Rick says he's tired of it;
they've been doing it for an hour. Ed can't believe Rick is giving up. Ed
wants to find the optimum environment for cooking Bauer Burgers. Rick
reminds his dad how he promised that when Rick was all grown up, Ed would
tell him the secret ingredient. He asks Ed to share this with him now. Ed
tells him to sit down & says it's a rite of passage. He makes a big deal
of it & says, based on Rick's behavior tonight, he doesn't think Rick is
quite ready. Rick thinks this is "poetic, but strangely empty." :-) Rick
stands & pretends to be the host of the Blue-Blooded Gourmet. He claps &
tells Ed, "Do something; don't sit there like a lox." Ed claps. Rick
introduces the culinary event of the year. He goes on in this vein for
awhile, but Ed doesn't fess up to the secret ingredient.

Instead, Ed gives Rick a postcard from Michelle, where she says she
danced for hours & hours with a boy named Emilio. Ed's postcard is pretty
generic by comparison--no mention of Emilio. Ed was hoping his little
girl would stay little for awhile, but it looks like that's not
happening. [Nope--she's coming back as a 17-year-old bombshell. Watch
out, guys!!] She's going to start a career soon. Rick suggests they let
her finish high school first. Ed says Rick will understand when his kids
grow up & move out. "I'm never moving out, Dad," promises Rick. "I'm
going to live here `til I'm 60." ROTFL! Dad & son hug. Holly shows up &
tells Ed she has a little problem & thinks he can help her.

POLICE STATION: In the rest room, Dinah talks to herself frantically. She
reminds herself that she's the victim. She moans over how she looks. She
tries to decide what she should tell Cutter. Blake walks in. "I'd love to
hear the answer to that one," she says.

In the squad room, the cops watch the blip on the screen slowing down.
Van walks over to Roger, desperate to know what's going on. He starts
spinning a tale of when he was working for the Agency in Vienna. In a
bungled mission, Rog took a bullet & fled Vienna with KGB counterparts.
He was in a barn, burning with fever from an infection. The farmer who
took him in was a beekeeper & taught him about the care of bees. He tells
Van that some people are allergic to bee stings & will go into
anaphylactic shock & die if they are stung.

GETAWAY CAR: Vik continues to swat & demands that Matt open the window.
Instead, Matt opens the door & rolls out of the (presumably) slow-moving
car. He rolls to safety under the guard rail & we hear the squeal of
wheels and a nasty crashing noise.

DINER: Buzz says he didn't know Brent was back in town, so he wasn't the
one to finish him off. "Neither did I," says AM, but if he had he
wouldn't have been sorry. Brent's sister gets up to leave & drops her
key. AM gives it to her & recognizes her. She says she heard everything
they said & she knows who they both are. She heard how Buzz & "that other
goon" put a hood over Brent's head & threatened him into leaving town.
The other goon joins in & tells the sister she should keep it down in his
diner. Lucy & Eleni join the crowd. The sister thinks they're all
covering up & wants to know what really happened to Brent. AM says she
just heard everything they know. She says her lawyer told her she has
grounds for a civil suit & she'll take away the diner & everything they
own. AM shows the sister the pictures he found in Brent's room: Lucy, AM
& Brent with targets drawn over their faces. Frank says, "Maybe you knew
your brother as a different guy, but the Brent that we knew was a sick &
violent & dangerous man & he hurt somebody that we love." Sis stalks out.

POLICE STATION: Dinah asks Blake if they sent her in to see how she was.
No, says Blake. Dinah says she's doing fine. Blake finds that amazing,
under the circumstances. Dinah's mascara is perfect. "I just put that
on," Dinah says. Blake thinks it's strange that Dinah is wearing matching
shoes, considering that a single shoe was found in her room, as if it had
been kicked off in a struggle. "Did you bring along a spare pair, or did
you send Viktor out to the mall?" Dinah feigns ignorance. Blake tells
Dinah that she hope Dinah won't be upset about the disappearance of her
CDs. Dinah asks if Blake thinks she would put her family through all this
just for money. "Money is all you've been after since you got here,
Dinah," replies Blake accurately. Ross calls in to ask if Dinah is OK.
Dinah locks herself in a stall & cries that she's not coming out.

Outside, Van asks Ross what's going on. He's worried that Blake is
badgering Dinah. Van goes in to take care of things. Blake stalks out.
Ross wants to know what Blake said to Dinah. Blake was just asking a few
questions. Ross is pissed, but so is Blake. She wants an explanation for
the "strange coincidences." Ross says Cutter will take care of it.

Van & Dinah emerge from the rest room. Dinah's ready to tell all. Ross
says she doesn't have to do it tonight. She wants to get it over with.
They head back to the squad room. There's no new word on Matt. "If
anything happens to Matt, I'll never forgive myself," says Dinah. "Why?
It's not your fault. Is it?" asks Cutter. In a way, it is, says Dinah.
"Because I told him to kidnap me." She says that Viktor found out her
family was wealthy & was going to kidnap Peter. "I told him to take me
instead." Ross comforts his daughter. Matt enters the room & Vanessa runs
to him & gives him a gigundo hug. Behind Matt, a cop enters with Viktor
in hand. Rog winks at Vik, who flashes Rog a look that could kill.

BAUER PATIO: Rick excuses himself. Holly tells Ed the good news that she
& Fletch are getting married. She tells him how she wore Fletch down with
all her proposing. She feels happy & lucky & total trust for Fletch. He
reminds her of Ed, who was one of the best things to ever happen to her,
even if she wasn't so great for him. She hopes she's not being
insensitive going on about herself in light of Ed's recent troubles. Ed
is thrilled for Holly. He asks how Rog is dealing with it. Rog doesn't
know, says Holly. She explains about the phony break-up to throw Rog off
the scent. She asks for Ed's help in throwing a Rog-free wedding.

DINER: Frank wants to talk to AM alone. They go to the kitchen. Frank
recalls that he & AM have a bad past & Frank has a lot of trouble getting
past that. AM admits that he used to be a pretty big jerk, but doesn't
know how to convince Frank that he's in love with Lucy. He only cares
about what will make her happy. He swears that he will never let Lucy get
hurt again. "Then we want the same thing," says Frank. He offers his hand
& AM shakes it.

BAUER PATIO: "...And Mr. Reade kisses Mrs. Read & they all live happily
ever after," finishes Holly. Ed thinks the plan is so convoluted, it
sounds like one of Roger's. Holly says she learned from a master. Ed asks
whether Holly would still be marrying Fletch if she wasn't so anxious to
break away from Rog. Yes, she insists. Ed believes her. She tells him how
sorry she is about Eve. Ed asks if Holly's mom will come. She thinks it
would be nice, but too complicated. She asks one more favor: will Ed give
her away? Ed thinks an ex-husband walking her down the aisle is a bit
unconventional. Ed says it would give him great pleasure. They hug.

DINER: Buzz thinks they'll be hearing from Miss Lawrence again. Frank
hopes AM got through to her. Eleni tells them both that AM is truly in
love with Lucy--how can they doubt it? At the door, AM finds it hard to
say good night to Lucy. She promises she'll be safe. She thinks the worst
is over, but AM says it's not over til they know that Brent is dead.

POLICE STATION: Van hugs Matt & tells him not to ever go away without
warning her again. They reaffirm their love. Dinah comes over & says
she's glad Matt is back safely.

Pachinov sees Rog & says Rog knew a single bee sting could kill him. "You
tried to kill me," he accuses. Vik knew what would happen if he tried to
cross Rog, Rog reminds him. Cutter listens with interest. He sends Vik
off to lock-up & makes a "what a coincidence" comment to Rog. Cutter
heads over to Van & Matt & asks Matt to give a statement.

Ross tells Dinah how brave she was to take Peter's place. "What about the
money?" asks Blake. "Were you going to split it with Viktor?" Dinah
feigns outrage & says she would never take blood money from her parents.
She walks toward the interrogation room & peers through the blinds.
Cutter asks Matt if Dinah had anything to gain from the kidnapping. Dinah
tries to catch Matt's eye as the screen fades to black.
