GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE: FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Bridget & Dylan prepare for a special evening
* AM takes a giant step backward
* Michelle & Eve do major bonding over a photo album, to Ed's delight
* Eleni & Frank go at it again; she calls in the cavalry

Afternoon in Springfield, USA...

BOARDINGHOUSE: Staring at her image in the toaster, Bridget begins,
"Mirror, mirror..." but gives up in frustration. As she cleans up, she
tells herself it was stupid to cut her hair because guys think long
hair is sexy, etc. She continues to berate herself in this manner
until she hears Dylan approaching, at which point she opens the oven &
sticks her head inside, as if cleaning it, in a vain attempt to hide
her perceived ugliness from him. He talks to her back, wondering where
she's been (at the supermarket, she replies, from inside the oven).
He's confused that Bridget has suddenly turned away from him when they
were "getting to a new level" & wonders what he's done to cause this.
Bridget finally pulls her head out of the oven to tell him it's not
his fault. "What happened?" he asks.

REGENCY: While making arrangements with the front desk for her short
absence in order to attend the cosmetics convention in Palm Beach,
Jenna removes the engagement ring from its box & places it on her
finger. She leaves instructions that if anyone should come by looking
for her, he's to be told she's away & didn't say when she'd be back.
She looks at the ring for a bit, then removes it & returns it to its
box, closing the lid.

AIRPORT: AM, backsliding into his scheming ways, instructs Jenna's
limo driver by phone to be late picking Jenna up, pretend he doesn't
know about a closed bridge & the necessary detours, & thus cause Jenna
to miss her flight. There's an extra C-note in it for the driver. As
AM hangs up, Ed spots him, having just dropped off a colleague. AM
says he's going on a "boring business trip." A reservations clerk
interrupts to double-check the spelling of Ms. Cooper's first name.

COOPER HOUSE: Frank bitches about Eleni's plan to travel 1000 miles
away with her ex-husband. Eleni says she's not doing anything wrong &
Frank is just imagining the worst of AM, as usual. They argue about
who brought up the subject of divorce. Frank thinks Eleni is being
naive if she thinks AM's agenda is purely business. Eleni describes
Frank's attitude: "You have made rules & the only way that I can be
your wife is to follow your rules. Well, I'm sorry, Frank, I cannot."
She thinks that in his eyes, divorce is the only answer & starts
flipping through the yellow pages in search of a lawyer.

Eleni chooses Sid Dickerson & makes the call while Frank stares at the
ceiling. She had planned to leave a message, but Sid's in, so, in a
wavering voice, she makes an appointment to meet with him regarding a
divorce. She tries to make the appointment for after her trip, but it
sounds like Sid is free right now & is offering to come over. (She
gives her address, 70 West Third St., for you trivia fans.) After she
hangs up, she seems in shock, as she explains that Sid was planning to
be in the neighborhood for another case. "Wow, hey, lucky for us, huh?
A divorce lawyer who makes house calls," comments Frank. He asks
what's going to happen to Marina--whether she'll have any say. When
Eleni doesn't answer his questions & starts to walk away, Frank gets
ticked. Eleni responds that she's going to find someone to take care
of Marina while she's out of town, adding that if she's going to be on
her own, she has to build her business. Frank says Eleni can go, but
*he's* going to take care of Marina.
E: I'm not sure I want you to.
F: I'm not sure I'm going to give you any choice.
Frank leaves to get his stuff from the hotel & promises to be back in
time for her to catch her flight.

AIRPORT: AM explains his trip to Ed: Eleni & Jenna are going to get
marketing ideas & he's going along to offer advice. With that "oh
yeah" look of his (AM compares it to his mother's "laser beam that
shoots right to the truth), Ed gets AM to confess that it means more
than just business to him. Ed assumed it was over with AM & Eleni. AM
thought so too, until the breakup with Frank. Now she looks at him in
a different way, she relies on him. Ed says it's good for Eleni to
have someone to lean on, but... AM says it's hard not to get his hopes
up. "She sees me the way I used to pray that she would see me." He
feels like they have a new slate. "Am I crazy?" he asks his uncle. Ed
says AM has to ask himself, is she in love with him or is she still in
love with Frank?

BAUER HOUSE: Eve looks through a photo album, focusing on a B&W photo
of a rather young Bert. When she hears Michelle enter, she closes the
album quickly, but Michelle sees it & asks what Eve's doing. Eve says
she found it in the living room; she didn't know it was Michelle's. M
points out that her name is in the front. Eve apologizes for not
asking permission. M says it's OK & hands the album back. Eve takes
the book back & tells Michelle how wonderful she thinks it is,
especially all the photos of her & Maureen. Michelle says she put it
together a few months after Mo died, "so people would remember what
she was like." She sits next to Eve & tells her who all the people
are: Uncle Tony & Aunt Annabelle, Uncle Mike in Washington, Grandma
Reardon. Eve comments on the likeness to Maureen; Michelle had never
noticed this before. Eve offers to stop, if this is making M sad.

"No, it makes me happy," says M quickly. "It's other people who get
sad." She remembers how Bridget cried when she saw the book, so M
stopped showing it to people. M feels bad that people always get real
quiet when talking about her mom. "Mom was noisy & happy... Why can't
we ever laugh when we talk about her?" she asks with a light in her
eyes. She shows Eve a funny pic of Mo at Halloween outfit & tells how
Mo put shaving cream & TP all over some stuffy neighbor's house. The
girls bond as M shows Eve more of her favorite pix.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Bridget continues to clean & insist that nothing's
wrong. She concludes that gorgeous girls have been throwing themselves
at Dylan since he was 12, which he finds laughable. She says she's no
prom queen & Dylan wonders what Julie said to get B so down on
herself. B denies being pathetic enough to take anything Julie says to
heart. "Well, good!" replies Dylan. B thinks, however, that Julie
looks like a movie star, while she looks like "a movie star's kid
brother." Dylan thinks the cleaning fumes have gone to Jet's head. She
just mopes. Dylan touches her face & shoulder while trying to impress
upon her that he wants someone "I love to be with... laugh with...
hold... kiss." He suggests "starting over" with an "official date" at
the Springfield Inn. Jet is hesitant, but finally agrees. Dylan runs
out while reminding her, "Seven o'clock!" Jet perks up & decides maybe
she was wrong, "especially about the hair." She starts humming to
herself as she continues cleaning. A delivery man arrives & asks for
Bridget, then apologizes when told he's speaking with her. He goes to
get a package for her. Lucy enters & asks if Jet needs any help with
the cleaning. Jet asks Lucy to play beauty consultant instead.

Lucy is surprised that Jet cares about how she looks: "I thought you
didn't care about that stuff." Jet says she didn't for a long time,
but now that she's got her baby back, she can worry about more mundane
stuff. She's embarrassed at feeling like she's 13 again, but Lucy
thinks "we all feel that way" when the date's with someone "we really,
really like." Jet says that's how she feels about Dylan & she wants it
to last. She's never felt like this about anyone, including Hart ("the
jerk"). Despite her obsession with him, she never thought about being
with him "forever." Lucy agrees, "Forever is a whole other ballgame."
Jet wonders how people stay together that long--don't they start
looking at other people? "Not when we're finished with you," promises
Lucy. She pauses on her way up the stairs to ask whether dinner is the
only thing on the evening's agenda, or, "should you shave your legs,
just in case?" ;-) Bridget smiles a secret little smile & decides this
is a good idea, "just in case, you know."

DINER: David offers fashion advice to Dylan, who has seemingly bought
out the entire tie & shirt collection of the local men's shop. Dylan
thinks tonight is "really important... I've waited for this all my
life. Whatever happens, I can't blow it."

AIRPORT: AM says he knows Eleni isn't about to stop loving Frank
overnight, especially in light of their child. Until recently, he
thought they would get back together. He explains to Ed about Frank's
inability to deal with Eleni on the level she needs, but Ed repeats
the all-important question: "Does she love you?" "I love her enough
for both of us," replies the irrational AM. Ed says AM should know by
now that unrequited love is hell. "It's different this time," insists
AM, because Eleni knows him now. Ed says this is no guarantee, then
decides that maybe he shouldn't be giving advice about playing it
safe. He advises AM to take his shot, but play it straight. "Don't
stack the deck," he warns. AM thinks "it's my job to make her choice
as easy as possible." Ed gives AM a paternal hug & reminds him that
he's a very good person; he just doesn't know it.

COOPER HOUSE: Sid shakes hands with a shaky, teary-eyed Eleni. When he
asks when she & Frank decided to get a divorce, she breaks down. He
proffers a hankie. After Eleni collects herself, he asks whether she's
thought long & hard about her decision. Eleni describes how wonderful
her marriage used to be. "It was like magic... Frank put me first in
his life & I did the same with him... He wanted what I wanted and...we
worked really hard to get it." She explains that "something went very
wrong. Frank & I, we did not talk to each other, we did not listen to
each other anymore... It started with one mistake & then suddenly
there were more--one mistake after the other & now it just seems like
so many mistakes have happened... maybe I can't go back."

Sid gives a little lecture on how marriages change and go through
stages. Eleni thinks it's too early for that & she & Frank shouldn't
have to "settle." She remembers her parents' love for each other &
doesn't want her daughter to grow up with parents whose voices are
hard & cold. She starts crying again. Sid advises her to think hard
about her future while she's out of town, & if she still wants to go
through with it when she returns, they'll draw up the papers. Frank
arrives just in time to hear Sid talk about drawing up the papers. Sid
walks out past Frank without acknowledging him.

Frank enters & comments snidely that Eleni's a fast worker. She cries.
He asks sarcastically what she's waiting for. "Don't you have a plane
to catch." She cries some more.

BAUER KITCHEN: Michelle brings drinks for Eve & herself as she tells
more stories about her family. Eve envies Michelle's close-knit,
picnic-&-barbecue family & compares it to her own, which went out to
eat at every holiday because her mom was an awful cook. She guesses
that's why she can't cook either (although she's pretty handy at
beheading fish, as I recall). M says cooking's not hard & offers to
teach Eve how to bake cookies. Eve is thrilled. M goes to answer the
phone & Ed waltzes in, spouting Spanish & asking Eve how hers is
(answer: nonexistent). M rushes off to study with her friend before Ed
can tell her his wonderful news: after school lets out, all 3 of them
are going to Acapulco for a long weekend. Eve thinks it's the
"sweetest idea in the world, but I can't go."

Eve says her walk down memory lane with Michelle made her realize how
close the bond is between mother & daughter & she thinks she needs to
take things very slowly with M. She tells Ed that today was their
first normal interaction & she thinks it's too soon to go on a "family
trip" together. While she's sure of her feelings for Ed, she's not
experienced in being part of a "big happy family." Ed agrees to take
it slowly. Eve remembers that she has to go the hospital & asks Ed to
have Michelle show him a certain picture in her book. "But promise me
you won't be sad." Ed decides he's "the luckiest man on the face of
the earth" & kisses Eve deeply.

DINER: David asks Dylan to explain why today is so different from
yesterday between him & Bridget. Dylan says that before, the custody
case was always with them, but now it's just the two of them.
David: So you're starting to feel a little naked?
Dylan: Well, it would explain why I bought all those clothes!
David reassures Dylan that Jet doesn't care about outer appearances &
that's one of the reasons she's so special. Dylan agrees, "I've never
met anyone like her." Split screen to...

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy is helping Jet do something with her hair while
Jet expounds on Dylan's wonderfulness. (It almost looks like the guys
are watching the girls, here.) Lucy reminds Jet that Dylan is, after
all, just a guy. Jet thinks he could be anything he wanted to be & is
amazed that "this incredible guy wants me." Meanwhile, back at the
diner, Dylan says incredulously, "Here's this amazing girl. She could
do whatever she wants in life & she wants to be with me."

BAUER KITCHEN: Ed looks through the album & tells M she picked good
pictures, "where everyone looks happy." He asks why M never told him
about the book. "I don't know," she shrugs. Ed's glad she told Eve, so
Eve could tell him what he'd been missing. M smiles & is delighted to
learn that Ed actually knew about the shaving cream & TP incident. (Mo
had been too embarrassed to tell Ed, but he found out from the
neighbor.) M thinks it's sad that Eve's family wasn't very family-
oriented & thinks it would be nice to have a party. Ed agrees that
it's been too quiet around the house & seconds the notion. He tells M
to put on some music while they make dinner. M tries to extract a
promise not to sing from her dad, but he reserves the right until he
hears the music she's picked. He opts for some wild air-guitar
instead, then lifts his daughter in a joyous hug as Eve returns.

BOARDINGHOUSE: As Lucy sweeps the kitchen, Jet emerges in a sexy black
off-the-shoulder dress with little criss-crossy spaghetti straps, long
sleeves & a short swingy skirt. Lucy drools that Jet looks better in
her dress than she does. Jet thanks Lucy for all her help. Lucy says
it was fun, like having her own live Barbie doll. "That's it, that's
who you look like!" declares Jet. Lucy laughs & shoos Jet out the
door. Conspiratorially, Jet tells Lucy, "By the way, I shaved my legs,
just in case."

REGENCY: The limo driver arrives & apologizes to Jenna for being late,
blaming rush-hour traffic. Jenna tells him they have to hurry & he
promises her that he knows a "wonderful short-cut." As they leave,
lightning & thunder begin outside.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni leaves her hotel phone number with Frank & tells
him to call her if there's any problem. She promises to call for her
messages every few hours. Frank assures her icily that can take care
of his own child. For a moment he looks like he might soften, but then
clams right up again. Eleni asks him to give Marina a kiss for her
when she wakes & Frank says nothing. Eleni says good-bye & leaves.
Frank looks like he's about to cry.

LIMO: The driver returns to the car & apologizes for the stalled car.
He can't get the engine to turn over & has called the auto club, but
it will take them 20 minutes to get there. Jenna says she doesn't have
that much time & says she'll look at the engine herself. She goes out
into the storm & the driver pulls out a phone.

SPRINGFIELD INN: Bridget shivers, drenched to the skin. She checks
herself in a mirror & sees mascara running down her face. Dylan
arrives & she hides her face as he expresses concern for her sodden
state & urges her to dry off by the fire. She keeps her face covered &
her back to him as she explains that she tried to call him, it's not a
good night for her, and maybe they can do this tomorrow. She tries to
leave, but Dylan stops her & says he can't wait until tomorrow. He
turns her around, tilts her mascara-covered face toward his & says he
can't wait that long.

COOPER HOUSE: Frank calls the airport & asks them page Eleni. He says
it's an emergency. His message: "Please come home. I love you."

AIRPORT: Eleni arrives & finds AM. She apologizes for being late & he
wonders if she had second thoughts about coming. She tells him she saw
a lawyer about a divorce. "Are you serious?" he asks. She confirms.
Their flight is called & AM leads the way to the gate while Eleni
worries about Jenna & thinks they should call her. AM says it looks
like Jenna isn't coming. They exit. The PA pages Eleni, but she's
already gone.

COOPER HOUSE: As the rain pours down outside, Frank stares out the
window. (Literary alert: Big-time pathetic fallacy!) As he turns away
from the window, his gaze falls on his & Eleni's wedding photo as the
screen fades to black.
