   Springfield Carnival Site.
Last day, and Ross drops Blake off to enjoy the wrap-up, then leaves
to tend to finalizations of the custody case. The carnival's resident
psychic strolls up, looking for a "woman in deep psychic distress".
   Blake: "That's me!" :)
Informed the woman in question is a blonde [!], Blake bites. But
guess who transports in looking for Buzz? That's right, Space Cadets,
Nadine. She and the psychic hook up, and begin a "mind-meld" session
(Nadine is instructed to think of the man who's missing, while the
psychic attempts to "grok" the vibes). Psychondroid pronounces that:
"(Buzz) has a hunger that must be fed. If it is not,
when a 'star' falls to the earth, he will leave you.".

   Meanwhile...

Buzz, actually considering blowing Dodge, and sleeping on a bench of
the local "Greyhound" terminal, has a dream-sequence triggered by the
sight of a soldier/wife reunion.
With slow, bell-like "ambient music" supplied by solo piano, a much
younger Buzz (with a full head of hair :) ) finds himself walking up to
the Diner (reduced motion---camcorder quality scene), entering, getting
spotted by Nadine, and having the crap slapped out of him (her slap
sounded amazingly like a gunshot - symbolic link to Buzz's psychological
turmoil re: the 'Nam shooting?). He awakens to the sound of nearby
church bells (again, major symbolism), to find --- JENNA! standing over
him!

[Nadine represents Buzz's anchor, which is rusting and displaced
because of the dual trauma of his violent experiences in Vietnam
and her early, semi-abandonment of the family which paralled his
own. Jenna represents his creative side, which is stifled by a
tendency toward complacency, in opposition to _her_ motivations.]
               {Time elasped: 30 seconds.  Cost: $39.95}

What appears to be a miracle reconciliation in the works, is broken
up when Ross transports in (legal custody documents to be shipped to the
Capitol), and invites Buzz out for drinks.
Eleni shows up in search of her father-in-law, spots Jenna, and the
two women get into a huge row over the Cooper family's amount of respect
(or lack thereof) for the man. Satisfied that Buzz hasn't made any plans
with the Jenn-ster, Eleni blows Dodge.

   The Diner.
While checking with Stavros about Buzz, Frank picks up a magazine,
then "time-trips" back to the Nixon era, when he was just a boy, busily
polishing the woodwork in the restaurant.
On his knees, he spots a tray of food that has been dropped on the
floor, alerts "Pops" Cooper to the mishap, but is shooed away ("Not,
now, Frankie..."). Frank Jr. cleans up the mess himself, Buzz enters,
and gathers his son in his arms:
Buzz: "Do you know who I am?"
Frankie: "Private 1st Class, Frank Achilles Cooper Sr., sir!"
             (accompanied by a salute)
   Buzz: (returns salute)
"Dad, to you, soldier. I'm sorry I missed Christmas,
and I'm sorry I've been away so long. And I swear it's
never going to happen again...I'll never leave home
again, and that's a promise. Ok, soldier?"
   Frankie: "Ok."
Frank drops back into real-time, and stares at the clock on the wall,
with Buzz's war medal positioned immediately below.

[Frank's trauma resulting from Buzz's broken promise is clearly
linked to food, and reinforced by his ties to the family business.
Eleni's successful catering venture, which revolves around food,
isn't "broken", resulting in a situation where Frank feels out of
control, combined with a fear of someone he loves "leaving" him, again.]
               {Time elasped: 5 seconds.  Cost: $39.95}

In front of the Franklin Park brownstones, Buzz, waiting on Ross,
engages the mental "time-trip" again, this time the extended version. :)
It's essentially the same as Frank and Nadine's, but from a slightly
different perspective (A tribute to Kurosawa's "Roshomon"? You make the
call.).
Nadine is focusing on the trivial (concerned with a girl Buzz had
been innocently chasing around), ignoring Frankie on the ground, and
it's Buzz who picks him up ("...I'll never leave again...").

Ross returns with a brown paper bag-wrapped pint of cheap booze and
some styrofoam cups [!]. Chat segues to Ross' impending marriage, and
his unusual nervousness, and turns to Buzz's relationship with Nadine.
The analogy of people on kidney machines is raised [!] ("...you live,
but your condition is dire..."), as well as one involving "peaches with
pits" (Nadine, natch).
The Marler allows that he's looking forward to having kids, BUT
"...should I be _marrying_ one?!". ;)

[Blake, meanwhile, is at the Diner, bitching to Frank about
winding up an "old" housefrau...Despite Forti's pep talk,
she can't shake the feeling that "something is terribly wrong...".
Frank continues the "time-warp" again (with Nadine, Eleni,
Lucy and Stavros present), where he climbs on a milk crate
and spots Buzz and Nadine making out in the kitchen.
Nadine "trips" again, too -same kitchen scene- but prior
to Frank's time slot, and painted with a different brush.
Buzz is apologizing for leaving, and declaring his love...
       then, the kiss.]

Buzz spouts a "Kung-Fu-ism" about "misery at the heart of every
marriage, and happiness at the heart of every misery". Ross notices that
it's half-past Mickey's nose, and time for him to get his butt home.
[There, he's surprised by Blake, who (surprise) decided not to
go to Holly's, opting instead for some more pre-nuptual nookie.
She jumps Ross on the bed, declaring, "I love you, I love you,
   I love you...go brush your teeth." :)]

Alone, Buzz "trips" again, and this time he's having a chat w/Pops
("...Nadine isn't a bad woman..."), and teaching Frankie how to make a
black cow...flash ahead...he's in his pj's, drinking a Coke Frank Jr.
had made for him, and walking across the tops of the stools at the
counter. Nadine comes down in her nightgown and joins him. They chat
about 'Nam, and the horrors of the war:
Nadine: "...I don't want to hear about all the blood..
            you're a hero to me...welcome home..."
With Jenna's false documents and money in-hand, Buzz snaps back to
real-time, and proclaims, "I never made a promise I didn't break...and
that's a promise."

Next stop, the Diner, where Buzz is welcomed with !great! enthusiasm. ;))

Back at her hotel, Jenna spots her BuzzGift of money and false id
papers under the door, with "Thanks Anyway" scrawled across the front of
the original red envelope.

[Jenna has found a "surrogate" family in Springfield, as well as
a lover well-suited to her temperments, but is flumoxed by a
need to project her chameleon-like adaptive abilities (born from
her career as a jewel thief and independant youth) upon him.]
