GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE: FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 1994

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Eleni gets a blast from the past
* Frank tries a new approach
* David plays Hamlet
* Rog & Julie testify
* Bridget takes the stand as Vanessa is haunted by her memories

COOPER HOUSE: Alan-Michael arrives with a suitcase as Eleni retrieves
the newspaper. She wonders if he's going away, but he says the suit-
case is for her & asks if he can come in. He sees Frank's declaration
of love painted on the wall & Eleni explains that she "didn't have
time" to paint over it. When AM pulls a dress out of the suitcase,
Eleni gets angry--she doesn't want AM to buy her anything. AM says he
didn't. The clothes are Eleni's from when she was married to him.

DINER: Frank finds Buzz's silver star laying on the counter & replaces
it on the wall. David enters & Frank asks how the custody hearing is
going. David says they should have an answer in a few hours, after Sid
rakes him over the coals. He is sure that his testimony will hurt
Bridget's case. He doesn't envy either Bridget or Vanessa. "Once that
judge hands down a ruling, their lives will never be the same again."

COURTHOUSE: Ross tells Dylan & a shell-shocked-looking Bridget that
the judge wants to wrap things up today. Dylan says Bridget's been up
for hours. Ross sits beside her & encourages her to hang in; they may
get a ruling by day's end. She looks wordlessly from Ross to Dylan.

Vanessa & Co. enter, with Sid talking to Josh about Van (who's in
about the same shape as Bridget) in the 3rd person. Henry & Mindy are
worried because Van hasn't uttered a word. Roger arrives & sends
Bridget (now leaning awkwardly against Ross) a supportive glance, then
enters the courtroom. Josh says Van doesn't understand why Sid wants
Rog to testify. A bailiff gives the 5-minute warning. Ross & Dylan
head in while Bridget promises to follow shortly. Van also remains
outside while her crew goes inside. She leans against the wall that
separates her from the area where Bridget is seated. Jet gets up &
tries to shake off her tension by shrugging her shoulders a few times
as she walks in Van's direction. She passes Van & the two lock eyes
for a moment. Bridget seems on the verge of saying something when Van
gathers her strength & walks past Bridget into the courtroom.

COOPER HOUSE: As she sorts through her "old" clothes, Eleni tells AM
she's putting her business up as collateral for the loan to pay Buzz's
bail. She & AM reminisce about the times they spent together when she
wore the clothes. She says she can't take them because they belong to
a different lifetime. She says AM should give them to a charity
because she can't use them. AM says she can--for all the Chamber of
Commerce functions. Eleni thinks she won't fit into them anymore, but
goes upstairs to try some on, promising nothing. AM calls to her that
he's got to run, & she can do what she likes with the clothes. He'll
try to arrange lunch with Jenna for them. Eleni calls back her OK.
Before leaving, AM stares at the words "I LOVE YOU" on the wall.

DINER: Frank doesn't understand how David's testimony can hurt
Bridget. David repeats his frustration at being placed in a position
where he could cost Bridget her baby.

COURTROOM: Bridget tells Ross she doesn't understand why Sid would
call Rog as a witness. Ross thinks the tactic will backfire. Mean-
while, Sid explains to Josh that he intends to make Roger admit to
specific instances in which he manipulated Bridget. Josh thinks it's a
bad move; Nick thinks they shouldn't be questioning Sid's strategy
moments before the judge's arrival. Van interrupts to ask everyone to
stop quarreling. She leaves the courtroom while her family continues
to talk about her quietly among themselves.

Rog approaches Ross & suggests that they review his testimony while
waiting for the judge. Ross points out that Rog is not his witness.
Rog says maybe Ross can anticipate Sid's questions & prepare him. Ross
says he can't. Rog doesn't understand; he just wants to help. Jet says
he's asking Ross to tell him how to lie under oath. Rog says that's
not what he wants. Bridget gets up & walks out in exasperation. Dylan
tells her not to let Rog upset her. "He's going to kill me with his
kind of help!" she replies.

Ross tells Rog to do what he wants, but not to pretend they're
partners just because they both want Bridget to get custody. Rog
suggests Ross try to get along with him better, "seeing as you're
marrying my daughter in a matter of days." Ross gets up to check on
Bridget, who's at the back of the courtroom with Dylan. Rog follows &
tries to explain how he can help "by keeping certain matters to
myself" when he's on the stand. Bridget doesn't like this idea. Van,
outside, hears the discussion. Rog says all that matters is who walks
out with Peter. Bridget says that's *not* the only thing that matters;
she doesn't want anything to happen that will make Peter ashamed of
her when he's old enough to understand what went on in court. She says
she may have done bad things before he was born, but afterwards she
changed her life. "I've stopped lying & I've started telling the
truth." She says she won't lie for Peter. Van reflects on this.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni comes down with Marina & the clothes. She asks
Marina's opinion, but Marina declines to give one. Eleni remembers the
day her daughter was born: "On that day, your father & I had every-
thing." She answers a knock at the door--it's Frank with the papers
from the bank. Frank sees the suitcase full of clothes & asks where
they came from. She doesn't answer. Frank recognizes a sparkly silver
dress. Eleni is surprised, but Frank says he's not about to forget the
time she was married to AM. "It was the worst time of my life. Except
for now." Frank realizes that AM has saved the clothes all this time.
"I bet he just loves to remind you of what you gave up. Especially now
when he thinks that you're looking around, wondering why you left him
in the first place. Is he right, Eleni? Is that what you're doing?"

DINER: Stavros asks David why he's still hanging around & guesses that
there's someplace David doesn't want to go. Stavros says David is in a
no-win situation & needs some food to make a decision. Kat comes in &
is relieved to find David. She tells him the judge has been delayed,
so he still has time to make it to court without getting in trouble.
She says she's tried to back off from his decision, but can't sit by &
watch him hurt himself. David doesn't want to hurt Bridget. Kat says
Bridget understands; she has changed her life & so has David. David
has heard this before. He says no one will send him to jail if he
refuses to testify in a custody hearing. Kat reminds him of his record
& says he has to look out for himself. He asks if she'll go with him.
In answer, she stands & offers him her hand. They walk out together.

COURTHOUSE: Blake arrives & learns that Rog hasn't testified yet due
to the judge's delay. She tells Tangie she came late on purpose so she
would miss his testimony. Blake says she's tired of being the daughter
of the man everyone loves to hate. Tangie understands. Court is called
into session & they enter the courtroom together. Josh throws a look
at Tangie & Sid calls Roger to the stand. Blake stands at the back of
the courtroom. Van & Jet both look worried.

COOPER HOUSE: Eleni says Frank is making too big a deal out of the
clothes. Frank thinks it's sick of AM to have kept them for so long.
Eleni says AM has nothing to do with their problems & just wants to
sign the loan papers so Frank can leave. Frank says maybe Eleni should
call AM first & have one of his lawyers look the papers over. Eleni
tells him to stop acting like a child. Frank says *she's* the one
playing dress-up. Eleni also thought it was strange that AM had saved
the clothes & wasn't planning on accepting them, but says Frank just
helped her change her mind. She signs the papers & shoves them at
Frank, telling him to get to the bank. He leaves & runs into AM
outside. He accuses AM of trying to buy Eleni & likens him to an
animal waiting for its prey to be wounded. AM says the image of Eleni
as helpless without her husband is how Frank wants her to be, not how
she really is. Frank leaves in disgust & AM climbs the stairs.

COURTROOM: Sid asks Rog about his trip to Vancouver to find Hart to
tell him about Peter. He gets Rog to admit that he "convinced" Jet to
accompany him & tries to draw a parallel to the way Nadine "convinced"
her to stay in the attic. Julie makes an entrance. Sid pushes Rog into
a corner, forced to say that either Bridget is extremely "malleable"
or that he used some extremely persuasive tactics to get her to
accompany him. He wonders what Rog promised her for going through with
the custody suit. Ross objects & is sustained but Rog says angrily
that he didn't promise Jet anything & she filed suit without even
consulting him. The judge strikes his remarks & Sid is done with Rog.
Ross has no questions.

Sid calls Julie to the stand. She approaches with a smug smile &
raises her hand for the oath. Bridget throws a deadly look at her. Sid
examines Julie's relationships with Hart & Bridget. Julie thought she
& Bridget were friends at the time, but found out she was just naive.
She says Jet "used" her to get at Hart, by getting him drunk &
seducing him when Julie wasn't ready to have sex. Bridget whispers
something to Ross. Julie says Bridget didn't tell Hart she was
pregnant because she was angry at him, since he wouldn't have anything
to do with her after the one time he slept with her. Sid opines that
Bridget was motivated by revenge. Ross objects, of course, but is
overruled. Sid is done & Ross gets his shot at Julie. [Get her!]

Ross tries to ruin Julie's credibility by establishing that she was
fired, is unemployed & is paying her rent with $ from Rog. She is
forced to admit that Rog asked her to "keep an eye" on Bridget &
Dylan. When Ross brings up Julie's prior engagement to Dylan, Julie
responds directly to Bridget: "But you ruined that too, didn't you?" &
is chastised by the judge. Bridget starts to rise, but Dylan pushes
her back down in her seat. Ross clarifies that the engagement was
broken after Jet revealed that Julie had just slept with Hart. He
opines that it's Julie who is out for revenge & is done with her. Sid
looks stunned & Bridget looks pleased with the cross. Sid calls
Bridget to the stand.

DINER: Blake can't believe AM saved Eleni's clothes. "I wasn't stupid
enough to leave mine behind, but I'm sure if I had, he would have
burned them." Frank is not cheered by this joke. He remembers seeing a
TV show about Tourette's syndrome (the one where people can't control
their utterances & blut out all kinds of horrible things) & thinks
this is like what happened to him today, with all the stupid things he
couldn't stop from coming out of his mouth. Blake says it's because
Frank is terrified & desperate. She points out that AM is in love with
Eleni too, so he's also desperate, in his own way. Frank wants to know
how he can stop saying the wrong things. Blake says there were a bunch
of things she wanted to say to her dad earlier, but couldn't, "so I'm
going to go home & write him a letter." Frank thinks this is a good
idea & resolves to do the same. He gives Blake a thankful hug & she
leaves. He grabs some paper & a pen & sits down in a booth to write...

My dearest Eleni,
I've been saying that I'm sorry for weeks now, so I won't start
this letter by saying it again. I know being sorry isn't enought & it
shouldn't be enough. You have to learn from your mistakes & sweet-
heart, I think I'm finally beginning to. It probably doesn't seem like
it to you when you see me acting the way I did today, but when I get
scared, when I suddenly think I could be losing you forever, I can't
see straight. I can't calm down; I can't make sense; I can't do any-
thing but strike out at all the things that are hurting me, as if
somehow I can make them stop hurting by shouting them down. Eleni, I
love you with all my heart & soul.

COURTHOUSE: Bridget nervously downs a glass of water. Ed tells her to
calm down. Jet is upset because she got to the stand & then the judge
called a recess. Ross offers a snack, but she can't eat after her life
just got "dragged through the sewer." Vanessa overhears as Bridget
worries that her son will think he is "just the product of a meaning-
less one-night stand." Ed says by the time he's old enough to under-
stand, he'll love & respect her so much that it won't matter. Dylan
comes by & Bridget says there's more "charming" things about her still
to come. She is sure that by the time this is over, he will feel very
differently about her. He says he already does. "Yesterday, I thought
I could never love you more than I already loved you, but here it is
today, & I love you even more." [Get out the Kleenex, kids!] He kisses
her hair. She starts to cry. David & Kat arrive & Bridget is thrilled
to see them. She is glad David didn't hurt himself by staying away.

Sid tells Van their most important witness has just arrived. Van says
he's blowing the "kidnapping" out of proportion. "She took the baby
for a few hours & then she brought him back." Van worries about the
words people use to condemn others. Mindy comforts her. The 5-minute
warning is given. Van walks up to Jet & seems about to say something,
but then goes inside. Everyone else follows, but Rog stops Julie. "You
sure hurt your meal ticket, didn't you?" She says he couldn't expect
her to lie under oath. He says she's a pro at it, like when she walked
down the aisle with Dylan "only minutes after sleeping with my son."
[A tiny exaggeration, but I'll allow it.] "That was one for the books.
And god only knows what happened between you & Frank to get you booted
out of that house." He says she's lucky stoning is out of fashion, but
promises to personally see that she gets what's coming to her.

COOPER HOUSE: Frank stands outside, holding his letter to Eleni. He
considers knocking, but opts for slipping it under the door. Inside,
Eleni tells AM that the clothes fit but they have to be cleaned. She
seems uncomfortable & suggests that he go to lunch with Jenna without
her, since the babysitter is late. AM says Jenna couldn't make it.
Marina starts crying, giving Eleni an excuse to run upstairs. AM sees
the envelope on the floor & picks it up. He debates for a moment, then
opens it & reads. He sighs & calls Eleni. She says she's changing
Marina. He says never mind; he thought he lost something, but he found
it. [Hmmm. Will AM keep the letter or Do The Right Thing?]

COURTROOM: Van listens morosely as Sid questions Jet about Elvis & the
time she left the house open so he could rob it. She admits she "made
some pretty hideous choices" at that time in her life. "Choices that I
wouldn't make now." Sid moves on to Nadine & the attic. He establishes
that the idea was not hers, but she went along with it--why? "I was
ashamed," she answers. He asks why she didn't go to her aunt & uncle.
She repeats, in anguish, "I was ashamed!" Van hangs her head,
remembering...

black & white flashbacks... a young girl lying in bed with an older
woman looking over her. "I'm so ashamed. Aunt Grace, I'm so ashamed!"
Vanessa begs to see her baby just once, but her aunt says
sympathetically but firmly that it's better if she doesn't. [Excuse me
while I wipe my eyes. This is truly heart-wrenching.]

Bridget, crying uncontrollably, says she thought it would be best for
Peter to be with Billy & Nadine, but she just didn't understand how
difficult it would be to give him up.

Flashback to Aunt Grace trying to comfort Vanessa, who is crying, "I
just didn't understand how hard it would be!"

"STOP!" yells Vanessa, standing. "Just stop!!" Bridget sobs, wiping
her nose. Focus on Vanessa as the screen fades to black.
