GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE: THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1998

HIGHLIGHTS:

* Harley pumps Lizzie for information, and gets caught by Beth.
* After hearing both sides, Phillip sends Harley out of town.
* Vicki convinces Michael to try a new source to back his research.
* Vanessa tells Alan about her cause, but he senses another agenda.
* Reva works on her escape from the lighthouse.
* The clone tries Reva's tricks on Josh & doesn't like the results.

SPAULDING MANSION: Just outside the front door, Phillip tells Beth
that if she insists on being convicted of a crime she didn't commit,
he won't stand in her way. But he warns her not to count on Ben
Warren. Beth says she can take care of herself, and Phillip should
pass that on to Harley. Phillip says Harley wants this to be over as
much as Beth does.

In the living room, Harley gives Lizzie some juice & asks her what
she saw the night Carl died. Lizzie says she can't tell. Harley says
they're friends, but Lizzie says she's not supposed to tell. Harley
asks if it was Beth who told her not to tell. Lizzie says no, but
Harley gives her a look and says Lizzie can always tell her the
truth. Lizzie admits that Beth told her not to tell. Harley sighs.

MICHAEL'S APT: Michael searches through the papers on his desk,
obviously frustrated. He's not too pleased when he hears a knock at
the door, either. It's Vicki, looking for some freelance work.
Michael says he doesn't have anything, and he doesn't really have any
time to chat either. He's upset because he can't find some photos and
papers from his project. Vicki offers to help look, but Michael
declines & grabs something away from her. He apologizes. She wants to
know what's wrong & what's going on with him.

LIGHTHOUSE: Reva shakes the locked iron grill to no avail. Tired and
frustrated, she wanders around the basement. She picks up the
polaroids & flips through them, unwilling to believe the other Reva
is her clone. She tells herself that she can't let a carbon copy kill
her or take over her life. She prays that the secret things she told
the clone will make Josh realize that she's still alive.

LEWIS HOUSE: The clone bounds down the stairs in her robe, chasing
after Josh. She asks if he was planning to wake her before he left
for work. He says she still wasn't home when he went to bed late last
night, so he figured she might want to sleep in. She reminds him that
the kids need their breakfast. Josh says he's capable of feeding
them. The clone says Josh looked so peaceful last night, so she
didn't want to wake him. She loves him so much.

Josh seems uncomfortable. He reminds the clone that she had asked for
some time to get her thoughts together. The clone says her thoughts
are very together now. Josh realizes that finding Reva's wedding band
upset them both. The clone gets really close to Josh & says she isn't
upset anymore. She reminds Josh that before all this Reva stuff came
up, they were about to make love again. Josh says he has to get to
work. The clone says the next time it will really be "making love"
and not just having sex. "Because I know the difference now."

The clone reminds Josh of the night at the country club. She wanted
him to see only her & he said he did. That he wanted her for only who
she was. Did he really mean that? Josh says he did & still does. The
clone reminds him how he ran out for champagne & cotton candy. Josh
says things just didn't seem right for her when he got back. The
clone remembers knocking Reva out with a vase & dragging her into the
closet. She tells Josh she was just feeling a little shy that night.
Josh finds this a little hard to believe. The clone says she's not
feeling shy now. She starts to loosen Josh's tie & unbutton his
shirt, but he keeps trying to back away from her, saying he has to
get to work. She won't take no for an answer. She needs to know he
loves her. Josh holds her away from him & says he doesn't compare her
to Reva anymore. "Don't tell me; show me," says the clone, kissing
him. Josh looks very confused.

MICHAEL'S APT: Michael tells Vicki there's nothing wrong & tries to
get rid of her. He won't be needing her for awhile, he says. She asks
if he means personally or professionally. Both, says the exasperated
Michael. Vicki pouts & he apologizes. She says he never really
explained why he fired her. He says he didn't have enough work. She
thought he liked her, at least a little. She doesn't understand the
sudden brush-off and wishes he would talk to her. He finally
explodes, yelling that the formula is missing and so is the file.
"He's sabatoged the whole thing!" Vicki doesn't know what Michael's
talking about. Michael decides he's said too much. Vicki just wants
to help. Michael says if she has $5 million, she can help, because
that's what he needs to set up lab facilities and start all over.

Vicki says it would help if she knew what the experiment was all
about, but Michael just keeps talking to himself about how he was the
first. Vicki keeps asking what he's talking about, so he decides he
may as well tell her. "I'm talking about human cloning." Vicki asks
if he's talking about the baby she saw and the little girl. Michael
explains about duplicating a human and accelerating the aging
process. He says he's done it on animals & the next step is to try it
on humans. Vicki asks who would sabotage Michael's work. Michael says
Lewis Oil was backing the process, but Josh has apparently gotten
cold feet over the ethical issues. Vicki says it's a pretty radical
concept for a layperson. Michael figures he could apply for a grant,
but that could take years.

Vicki says she doesn't have $5 million, but she knows someone who can
make the project happen -- their former boss, Alan Spaulding. Michael
says no way. Alan is unscrupulous. Why would Vicki suggest him? Vicki
says he's rich, smart & a risk taker. Michael doesn't think Alan will
want to back him, since they didn't part on good terms. Vicki thinks
he will, after he hears what Michael is onto. Michael doesn't want to
work with Alan. He doesn't trust the guy. Vicki says Michael would be
in control, but Michael doesn't think that's possible with Alan.
Vicki offers to keep an eye on Alan & says it's the only way Michael
will achieve the success he deserves. Michael finally shrugs &
decides it's worth a shot. They leave to go talk to Alan.

SPAULDING MANSION: Harley tells Lizzie that she knows Beth has been
very upset. Harley wants to help Beth. She knows that Carl was a very
bad man who made Beth sad, and scared Lizzie. Even though Carl is
gone, Beth is still sad, and Harley thinks Lizzie is too. Harley says
when she was little, she had a secret that she couldn't tell anyone,
but she found someone she trusted & she felt so much better after she
told that person. She knows Lizzie trusts her, so Lizzie should tell
her so she can feel better. . Lizzie doesn't want to break her
promise. Harley wants to help, but she can't unless she knows what
happened. "You have to tell me what happened the night of the party."
Beth stalks into the room, grabs Lizzie by the hand, and tells Harley
to keep away from Lizzie.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: Alan is being fitted for a suit when Vanessa
shows up to meet him. They exchange barbed pleasantries and Alan asks
what she's there to accuse him of. She says she's there to get him to
do a good deed. She tells him about her new pet project, "Second
Chances," to help women in crisis. Alan wonders why he should be
interested; Van says it would be great publicity for Spaulding. And
she also thinks Alan has a spark of compassion in him somewhere. And
he did have a relationship with a woman in crisis. Alan says all of
his relationships seem to involve a crisis. Vanessa says she was
talking about Annie.

Alan dismisses the tailor & puts on his jacket. He asks why Van would
come to him when she has a much better relationship with the folks
over at Lewis Oil. Van reminds him that she was president of
Spaulding once & she knows how much clout the company has. Alan
thinks Van has a hidden agenda. She won't be content with raising a
baby & running a volunteer group forever. He thinks she has more of
an interest in Spaulding. Pushed, she finally admits that she thinks
she could be of use to Spaulding.

Alan's secretary announces Michael, who walks into the office without
being invited. Alan instructs his secretary to have Michael arrested.

LIGHTHOUSE: Reva sees that the wall under the window is crumbling.
She grabs a length of pipe & starts banging away at the concrete. She
talks aloud to Josh, asking why he did this. In a way, she's
flattered that he needed her so much that he created this "thing,"
but she thinks it's one hell of a memorial.

LEWIS HOUSE: The clone pushes Josh gently down onto the couch as she
pulls off his tie. She says she feels so content and peaceful, like
nothing else exists in the world. Josh looks at her glassy-eyed. She
rubs his bicep & tells him how much she loves that muscle. She takes
his hand and traces a heart in his palm, then traces one on her own &
holds their palms together, saying, "Always, Bud. Always." Josh backs
away from her with a start. "Who told you about the hearts?" he asks.

Josh gets up & starts buttoning his shirt. The clone says Josh & Reva
used to do the hearts. Josh says he never told her that. The clone
asks how else she could have known. Josh talked to her for weeks &
told her tons of things about him & Reva. Couldn't that have been one
of them? Josh guesses she could be right. The clone feels like she
can't win, because sometimes when she reminds him of Reva, he loves
her for it, and other times, he hates her for it. Josh denies ever
hating the clone. "But you still don't love me, not with your whole
heart," says the clone. She knows he cares about her, but it still
hurts. She wants them to be really intimate. She kisses the palm of
his hand & he caresses her face. She says it feels good. "Don't ever
stop," she adds, leaning her head against his chest. Josh looks
really confused.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: Alan tells Vanessa about how Michael knocked
him out cold in the Spaulding lab. Van urges Alan to at least listen
to Michael, but Alan wants him gone. Michael asks for just 5 minutes.
Alan relents, telling Van that she has his support for her group &
they'll talk details later. He asks his secretary to show Van out.
Michael assures Van that he'll be fine, so she thanks Alan & leaves.

Outside Alan's office, the secretary sees Vicki staring at a portrait
& asks if she needs help. Vicki says she's just waiting for Michael.
[She referred to him as Mr. Burke, rather than Dr. Burke.] Van
recognizes Vicki vaguely. She introduces herself as Vicki Brandon.
Van says the portait Vicki was looking at was another Brandon --
Brandon Spaulding. Vicki knows; she says the secretary told her. Van
invites Vicki to come to dinner with Michael sometime, then departs.

Back in Alan's office, Alan asks what Michael wants. Michael says
Alan is the only man around with any vision.

SPAULDING MANSION: Beth accuses Harley of badgering Lizzie, but
Harley says they were only talking. Beth wants Harley to stay away
from Lizzie from now on. Harley says Lizzie saw something the night
of Carl's death that could help. Lizzie, in Phillip's arms, cries
that she didn't tell Harley anything. Beth takes Lizzie & says Harley
won't bother her anymore. She asks Phillip to show Harley out & runs
upstairs with Lizzie.

"What happened to letting it go?" asks Phillip. Harley says Lizzie
saw something the night of Carl's death, and she couldn't ignore it.
Phillip asks why Lizzie is so upset. Harley says Lizzie was fine
until Beth swept in "like the Wicked Witch of the West." Phillip
doesn't think Harley can blame this on Beth. Harley argues that she's
only interested in the truth, which Phillip seems to have decided to
forget. She thinks he wants her to drop it because it upsets Beth,
but he says he wants her to drop it because it upsets Lizzie. He says
Lizzie is going through a tough time now & he wants her to feel safe
& loved. Harley argues that she's not going to feel very safe if she
has to keep a secret for her mother. Phillip says Harley doesn't know
that, but Harley says Lizzie told her so. As Beth comes downstairs,
Harley suggests that the cause of Lizzie's nightmares might be the
secret that she's keeping. Beth suggests that Harley get the hell
out. Harley thinks that's a good idea.

Beth thinks Harley would do anything to get back at her. This really
sets Harley's temper on fire. "First you do everything you can to
make your daughter an accomplice to keeping your little secret..."
Beth denies this & Phillip starts to intervene, but Harley keeps
going: "...and then you sleep with Ben Warren to keep covering your
tracks!" Beth quivers with rage as she looks from Harley to Phillip.

Harley dares Beth to deny that she was with Ben Warren last and then
had the gall to blast Phillip for spending the night with her. Beth
says Harley must be pathetic and desperate to invent such a story.
Harley asks Beth where she was last night, if she wasn't with Ben.
"Don't answer that," says Phillip. He asks Beth to go upstairs and
check on Lizzie. Beth doesn't want to give Harley the chance to tell
more "lies," but Phillip says he'll take care of it.

After Beth leaves, Phillip tells Harley that it was almost over, and
they were so close to getting back to their lives, until Harley had
to hammer away at Lizzie, who is still trying to recover from seeing
a man killed. "What the hell is wrong with you?" he asks angrily.
Harley says Phillip is just refusing to see the truth.

LEWIS HOUSE: Josh kisses the clone, but when she starts to unbutton
his shirt again, he backs away. He says if she wants real love, it
has to be right for both of them. She's upset that it's not right for
him now. She wants him so much. Josh knows. The clone backs off, but
she's not happy about having to take time. Josh says they have all
the time in the world.

LIGHTHOUSE: Reva continues to batter at the crumbling wall, but she
has a long way to go.

SPAULDING MANSION: Harley says she heard Ben & Beth talking about
sleeping together last night. Phillip says he just didn't want Harley
to give Beth the third degree. He's afraid of what she's becoming.
"You're going to hurl accusations like that at a woman who's already
on the edge?" Harley says she's on the edge too. "I am cursed with
loving you and not being able to live with these blinders on that you
need me to have, and I can't have you without losing the other..."
She gives up. She tells him to forget everything she said about Beth
& Ben; she made it all up.

Phillip says he believes her. Harley hugs him & says she was so
afraid that he wouldn't accept it. He says he just doesn't trust Ben.
They have to find out what he's helping Beth cover & what he's really
up to. Harley is glad that Phillip is finally seeing reason. She
wants to call Ben's office & talk to his staff. Phillip says no;
Harley has to leave Springfield.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: Alan figures Michael must have a pretty big
project if he's willing to deal with Alan. Alan asks what's in it for
him if he gives Michael $5 million and a lab. Michael says he'll be
the richest man in the world. Alan isn't into hyperbole. Michael is
serious. "Then you have my attention," says Alan.

LEWIS HOUSE: The clone gives up & pours herself some coffee. Josh
says this happens with couples all the time; they're not always in
sync. Sometimes they have things on their minds or whatever. It used
to happen to him & Reva all the time. The clone asks what Josh has on
his mind. Josh says he could ask her the same question. He thinks
something is troubling her. She complains that things keep getting in
their way, preventing them from living their own life. She didn't
know it would be so hard to make Reva "go away." Josh says they
shouldn't expect too much too soon. The clone has heard this before.
Josh says he has to go because he's late, but he's glad they had this
talk. The clone is too. She says things seem clearer now. Josh kisses
her & leaves. Outside, with his shirt still unbuttoned, he asks
himself, "Who told you about the hearts?"

Inside, the clone sweeps Reva's picture off the table. "You tricked
me Reva," she says. "You said it would make him love me more, but
instead it made him start thinking about you and wondering how I
knew." She thinks Reva shouldn't have done this to her. She hates the
idea of having to kill Reva, but doesn't think she has any choice.

SPAULDING MANSION: Harley & Phillip walk outside as Harley rants
about Phillip wanting to send her out of town. When he finally gets
her to hush for a minute, he says it would be a lot easier to settle
things if she stayed out of it. Harley doesn't want to be away from
Phillip. He reminds her that she wanted to visit Jenna and this is
the perfect time to do it. It won't be forever. The way things have
been going, Harley wouldn't be surprised if it were. Phillip shuts
her up with a kiss. She hugs him and he says he'll miss her a lot.
They kiss again and she leaves.

Phillip goes back inside as Beth comes downstairs. She asks if
Phillip believes what Harley said about her sleeping with Ben.
Phillip says it doesn't matter.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: Alan is intrigued by what Michael has told him
so far, but wants him to cut to the chase. Michael explains that he's
made some recent breakthroughs in his research. He says he can clone
a human being.

LIGHTHOUSE: Reva hears the clone coming, so she pulls some kind of
curtain or tarp over the evidence of her efforts on the crumbling
wall. She goes to the grill and asks the clone how things went with
Josh. The clone says they couldn't have gone better. Reva says she
was right about the clone needing her help. The clone thinks the big
trick was tracing the hearts in the palms of their hands. She's been
trying to think of a way to pay Reva back for all she's done, and
she's come up with the perfect thing. She smiles broadly through the
grill as the screen fades to black.
