* Dinah pushes Matt's buttons.
* Brent gets even more wicked.
* Michelle & Bill prove that misery doesn't always love company.

Nighttime in Springfield, USA...

CEDARS HOSPITAL: Rick walks in on Eve in the lab as she is about to give
herself an injection. He accuses her of trying to kill herself. "I'm not
killing myself; this disease is killing me," she declares. "It's the only
way I know how to fight it; please let me do it my way!"

BOARDINGHOUSE: Dinah dances to some exotic (French?) music while drinking
a glass of white wine. She's wearing a hideous neon-green shirt. [Please,
tell me the fashion staff isn't entering another Green Period!] Her
cosmetics are spread out on the dining room table. She settles down to
polish her toenails & Matt enters. "What a way to spoil a lovely
evening," comments Dinah. Matt says he needs peace & quiet to work, so
Dinah suggests he go upstairs. No go; he needs the table to spread out
his blueprints. He turns off the music & pushes Dinah's foot out of the
way, suggesting that she learn to share. She offers to share her face
cream with him unless he leaves her alone. "Go ahead," he says.

YACHT: Lucy stands on the deck, watching the water. AM joins her to let
her know the cabin is ready whenever she wants to rest. She continues to
stare out at the water. AM comments on the beautiful night & the lights
of Springfield. "You're far away from it, far away from everything you've
been through." She wishes it were true. AM reassures her that she's safe,
but she feels that Brent is nearby. "I can feel him."

DOCK: And she's right. Brent is lurking on the pier, looking dangerous.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Dinah thinks better of wasting expensive face cream on
Matt, who observes that one day's worth of honest work has made her go to
pieces. Dinah has no interest in sharing her feelings with Matt. He
doesn't care, but warns her that he'll be watching her closely. What for?
He thinks Dinah has been going behind his back, trying to poison
Vanessa's mind against him. She thinks he's paranoid & wonders what
happened to the "calm, cool, nobody-can-touch-me Matt Reardon." She
intuits that things are not all peaches & cream between him & Mommy
Dearest. He interrupts her by grabbing her hand & demanding to know what
she said to Bill. "What sort of poison did you spit into his ear?"

BAUER BACKYARD: Michelle asks Bill if he remembers when Matt taught them
how to shout at the moon. He remembers, but doesn't much care. It's
obvious he's in a rotten mood. Michelle is pretty moody herself. She
comes OUT every night & just stares at the moon, wanting to scream at the
top of her lungs. Bill asks why she doesn't & says she can yell now, if
she wants. She can't; her dad is inside & he doesn't need to hear it with
all that he has on his mind. Besides it had more meaning at the beach.
Bill thinks it has to do with Matt; she still has a crush on him. No, she
says, besides he's engaged to Bill's mom. [Gee, when they get married,
Bill & Michelle will become step-1st cousins, once removed.] He's peeved
that Van saw fit to tell everyone else before him. And Dinah told him
some stuff about Matt that's "not too pretty." Michelle thinks Matt's a
great guy & wants to know what Dinah said. Bill's not telling. He breaks
out a cigarette to chill out & Michelle comes down on him hard. "When did
you start smoking? It's a disgusting habit & it can kill you." Bill says
Dinah taught him. He lights up & puffs. [I guess Dinah didn't get around
to teaching him how to inhale.] M tells him to blow his nasty smoke in
the other direction. He takes another puff, but has to quickly stamp out
the butt when Van sticks her head out the door to see how they're doing.

BAUER KITCHEN: Van is worried about Bill's grades. He's flirting with a D
in biology, despite the hours he spends "studying" with Michelle. Ed
notes that M's grades are slipping as well. Van remembers the "good old
days" when both kids were straight-A students. Van asks about Eve. Ed
admits it's not looking too good. Van thinks maybe Ed & Rick should seek
a second opinion. Ed brings her up to date on Eve's consultations with
the only other expert on her disease.

CEDARS: Rick takes the syringe from Eve by force while she complains that
he has no right -- it's her life & her body. Rick says he can't help her
beat the disease when she's self-medicating. He knew something was weird
when her white blood cell count changed, so he looked at her notes on the
computer. She says he had no right. He insists that she's using a highly
toxic & untested compound. She's very angry at him & starts to fall. He
catches her & they embrace. Rick says they have ways of helping her &
he's not going to let her to play Russian Roulette. There's only a remote
possibility that the drug she's taking will help her, and it's more
likely to kill her. Eve's counting on the remote possibility. Rick
refuses to let her do it. She says it's too late--she's already started.

YACHT: AM asks if he should leave Lucy alone. She says no; she doesn't
want to be alone. And she can't bear the thought of going downstairs to
the cabin by herself. AM says she can sleep upstairs in the salon & he'll
stay right outside. She asks why he's doing so much for her. He just says
she needs her rest & they go inside.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Matt deducts that Dinah told Bill about the engagement.
She says if he was upset, it was because he was the last to know, just
like her. Matt says they didn't want it to happen that way. Dinah points
out that she is Bill's sister & they stick together. She & Bill are Van's
"real family" & will be around long after Matt's gone. She picks up her
cosmetics & deliberately knocks over a bottle of astringent onto Matt's
blueprints. "Oops, sorry, spilled something," she chirps as she exits,
leaving Matt to mop up the mess. He flings a wet cloth in her general
direction, but she's long gone.

BAUER YARD: Michelle insists on knowing what Dinah said about Matt. Bill
says it's nothing she wants to hear. Michelle says Dinah must be lying.
Since Dinah is Matt's age & lives at the boardinghouse, Bill figures she
knows him pretty well. Michelle stands up for her cousin, who has been
there whenever her family has needed him. The argument escalates until
Michelle warns Bill that if he wants to stay friends with her, he'll have
to tell her. "Matt's a user," Bill says, explaining that Matt is only
interested in Van's money. And Matt's jealous of Bill & Dinah because
they're competition, so from now on, he's watching his back around Matt.

Van pokes her head out the door & asks what's going on. The kids don't
fill her in; they just huff into the house.

YACHT: As Lucy sleeps restlessly in the salon, bare feet in tight black
pants pad through the room. The camera pans up & we see, amazingly, that
it is Brent, clad in a wetsuit & dripping rudely on the carpet. He stands
over Lucy's sleeping form. He reaches out toward her, his hands near her
face, then pulls down the covers. She wakes & he quickly clamps his hand
over her mouth, muffling her scream. "You think you could run from me?
You think you could accuse me of rape & get away with it? Nobody gets
away with that, sweetheart, nobody. Now, you're going to get what you
deserve." He moves over her, ominously, blocking the camera's view.

Alan Michael comes rushing into the room & wakes Lucy up. She was
screaming & crying in her sleep. Even awake, she is convinced that Brent
was there. She finally realizes it was just a nightmare. AM reassures her
that no one can get in. All the doors are locked, the portholes are
bolted shut & he was right outside the room. Lucy feels like her whole
life is a nightmare. AM thinks it's important that Lucy talk to someone--
a counselor or a friend. But Lucy doesn't want to talk about it. AM says
she doesn't have to. Lucy has a moment of empathy & thinks poor AM looks
helpless. She says it makes her feel good that he's helping her. He gets
up to leave, but she asks him to stay. "I can't sleep anyway." AM wipes
one of her tears away & smiles. He breaks out the board games to pass the
time. He asks which one she wants to start with. She doesn't care. "OK,"
he smiles, "We'll play Alan-Michael Wins." Lucy smiles weakly.

CEDARS: Eve pulls out all her paperwork & spreads it out for Rick,
explaining it to him. Intermittently, she holds her head and sounds
breathless. She insists that she's practicing science, not Russian
Roulette. She thinks she's getting stronger, but Rick sees otherwise. He
asks about her nosebleeds & her chromosomal translocations. She doesn't
know. But she's confident that her "science" will work. Rick admires her
courage & persistence, but he doesn't believe in what she's doing. She
begs him not to tell Ed, but he refuses to keep a secret from his dad.
"You don't have the time or strength to be a guinea pig." Eve feels that
even if her research doesn't help her, it might help someone else. She
refuses to give up. Rick refuses to let her continue. She asks what he's
going to do? Burn her papers? Lock her out of the lab? He picks up the
vial of medication & takes it to the sink. Eve says she can make more. "I
will prove that this is a cure, even if I have to do it by myself." She
looks awfully weak.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Shirtless Matt & towel-wrapped Dinah meet in the hall
outside the bathroom. Dinah got there first & she intends to take the
longest, steamiest shower of her life. Matt requests that she save him
some hot water. She makes a non-committal noise as Matt walks off. Oops,
there's a small problem. She can't get into the bathroom because there's
something wrong with the doorknob. She calls "Mr. Handyman" back to fix
it. He opens the door for her & she thanks him sarcasticly.

She enters the bathroom & starts running the water. While her back is
turned, Matt slips into the bathroom & closes the door behind him. He
stands there watching her until she turns around & notices him. She asks
if he's looking for a free show. He doesn't care what's under the towel;
he wants to see what's in her eyes. He's got some idea that a person's
eyes are the window to her soul. Dinah's willing. She walks right up to
him, almost chest to chest & stands on her toes, looking up into his
eyes. "Tell me, what do you see?" [This is really too weird.]

"You're a predator, Dinah... You're an animal that feeds off of other
animals, the smaller ones, the weaker ones..." Dinah didn't figure he'd
call her a pussycat after she saw right through him. She thinks they're
more alike than he knows, both out for Number 1. "At least I don't hide
behind Vanessa, pretending to love her, when all I really want is her
money," states Dinah. Matt says Dinah hides behind Bill & uses him as a
tool. Dinah says Bill's upset because he can't stand to see his mom taken
for a ride by a con man. Matt thanks her for telling him what she's been
saying about him & how she turned Bill against him. "You're just jealous
of your mother & you don't want her to be happy, do you?" Matt tries to
leave, but the door's messed up again. Dinah tries to fix it & manages to
push the knob off on the other side of the door. Matt says they won't be
able to get out on their own. Dinah starts yelling for help, but Matt
reminds her that no one else is home. Out in the hall, the phone rings.

BAUER HOUSE: Van can't get an answer at the boardinghouse & thinks it's
odd, since Matt said he'd be working at home. Bill looks like he expected
something like this. Ed & Michelle set the table. He asks her if she's OK
& wonders if she & Bill had a fight. "Don't worry about me," she says. Ed
tells her how proud he is of how she's handling everything. They hug &
she tells her dad he's the greatest. Rick enters, just in time for
dinner. Vanessa calls Bill in & Michelle leaves to wash up. Rick tells Ed
they need to talk. Ed deduces that it's all about Eve.

CEDARS: Lillian contemplates opening an envelope, then folds it & stick
it in her pocket. She enters the lab & finds Eve asleep on her computer.
Lillian wakes Eve & tells her it's time for bed. Eve wants to keep
working; she feels she doesn't have much time left. Lillian says she can
continue in the morning. "Do you ever doubt yourself?" Eve asks. All the
time, Lillian replies. Eve is questioning her whole life. Science has
always been like a religion for her & she doesn't know how to accept it
letting her down. "Maybe there's somewhere else you have to go for your
answers now," suggests Lillian. [To the Lighthouse, to the lighthouse!]

Eve doesn't have Lillian's faith. She doesn't really believe in miracles.
Lil thinks people can change whenever they want. But they can continue
the conversation back in Eve's room. Eve asks why Lillian is at the
hospital so late. Lots of administrative work to catch up on, says Lil.
Eve asks about the big envelope in Lillian's pocket. It's her mammogram.
She's scared to open it & Dr. Sedwick's not around. Eve suggests they
open it. Eve reads the results & tells Lil that she's normal. The two
happy women head off to Eve's room. On her way out the door, Eve fiddles
with the door catch (presumably so she can get back in later).

YACHT: AM wins a game of backgammon & offers to play something else. Lucy
doesn't really feel like it. But she finally realizes that there will be
a tomorrow. The sun will come up. She reflects on how the last month has
been such a nightmare for her. AM suggests a little poker to pass the
time. He warns her of his card shark skills as he fumbles with the deck.
Lucy suggests they just listen to some soft, soothing music instead.

DOCK: The music isn't soft, but creepy out her in the fog. A stranger
approaches Brent. "Did you bring it?" asks Brent.

STEAMY BATHROOM: Matt tries to fix the door, but Dinah suggests they just
wait until someone comes home. That could leave them there way too long
for his liking. He points out that the tub is full & the water's still
running. He asks if she's taking a bath or a shower & she says both. Very
Continental. [Sounds like a waste of water to me!] "Might as well get
comfortable," suggests Dinah, reaching for her towel.

YACHT: AM brings Lucy a brandy, humming softly. She lays down on the
couch & he covers her with a blanket. He sits across from her, singing a
little lullaby about not leaving, staying there with her. She falls into
a gentle sleep.

DOCK: Brent inquires as to whether the gun he is about to buy is hot. The
dealer says the registration has been filed off, making it good as new.
This is good enough for Brent, who hands over $200 in cash. The dealer
trusts him enough not to count it. Brent caresses the snub-nosed
revolver. "This will do just fine."

CEDARS: Eve sneaks back to the lab. Ed is waiting for her. He's looking
at her computer. Rick told him what she was doing. "This could kill you
faster than the disease," he says, in great pain. Eve says it's her only
chance, the last chance they have for a life together. "You have no
choice but to help me."

BAUER HOUSE: The meal takes place in painful silence. Vanessa offers
bread, then excuses herself, leaving Rick with the kids. "Is meatloaf
supposed to look like that?" he asks. Michelle begs Rick to not give up
on Eve. Not yet.

BATHROOM: Dinah hesitates, but Matt urges her on. "What are you waiting
for?" Dinah unwraps the towel & lets it drop to the floor, revealing the
backs of her bare calves to the camera. [It is a shot eerily reminiscent
of Vanessa's coat-dropping days.] Matt eyes her like a science experiment
as the screen fades to black.
