Hi everyone. Today's episode was a rather intense one (can you say
"PUT ME THROUGH THE EMOTIONAL WRINGER" kids?) and in light of that
(pun intended), I've decided to use a different update format for it.
All the storylines are in order except for the Lucy/Brent one, which
is separated at the end of the update, because (IMHO, and I get to
decide) it was the most chilling part of the episode. I hope this
won't be too confusing.

Please feel free to let me know if you have a strong preference about
a) All the segments in the order they happened versus b) Each
storyline as a separate entity.

Also, there were a LOT of subtle acting/directing/cinematographic
touches in this episode, and I've tried to make them as clear as
possible. Hope I did OK. Thanks go to Lance "starkid" Saunders for the
resonance concept.

Guiding Light Update Monday, 8 May 1995
In Brief:
-Dinah faces the music
-Eve's diabolical plan moves forward
-We learn more of Annie's past
-Reva continues to play with Josh's mind
-Brent and Lucy have it out.

LEWIS HOME: A sullen Bill sulks as Dinah blathers on about Matt and
Van's engagement. Outside, Van worries about how best to break the
news to Bill.

HOSPITAL LAB: Eve types away on her computer. Enter Ed, surprised to
find her up this late. She shows him her data and says she thinks
she's found a cure.

Outside, Annie snaps at Lillian for no good reason. She apologizes and
explains that she and Josh had a fight. Lillian suggests calling him.
Annie resists but finally agrees. Lillian leaves her alone to make the
call.

CROSS CREEK: Josh arrives, shouting "Hello?" (Who did he think he'd
find?) He turns on a light and calls again. No one home. "All right,
Reva, you told me I could find you here, now where are you?" The
clock chimes and he jumps a foot.

(Lucy/Brent scene)

Roll lighthouse.

Bad breath causes your wallpaper to go insane.

HOSPITAL: Annie hangs up. Re-enter Lillian. Annie reports that
according to Henry, Josh blew Dodge. Annie is sure she's destroyed her
relationship with him. Why does she keep doing this? Lillian reassures
her: she's young and gorgeous and intelligent. [Why couldn't she be
intelligent first, gorgeous second?] Men adore her. When Annie gets to
Lillian's age, she'll realize you have to grab the good men while they're
around. Love should be simple. "Yeah, it should but it never has for me."
Enter Rick - BING! He needs a favor from Lillian; she leaves to do it.
Annie pulls Rick aside for confrontation. "You told Josh about us!"

CROSS CREEK: Josh yells for Reva to answer him. Nothing. He tries her
full name Reva Shayne Lewis. [Actually, shouldn't that be more like
Reva Shayne Lewis Lewis Spaulding Lewis?] Josh decides he really is
going crazy. Suddenly he sees a newspaper on the floor by the
fireplace. He picks it up; the front page has an announcement of his
and Reva's wedding. It bursts into flame in his hands. He tosses it
into the fireplace, staring.

If you realy must keep your fish in plastic bags, make sure they're
Glad-Lock.

LEWIS HOUSE: Dinah shakes her head. "I just don't think Mom cares
about us at all." Bill defends Matt, not terribly strongly. Dinah
confides in him -- making him swear to keep the "secret" -- that
Matt's a jerk who's been poisoning Vanessa's mind against poor Dinah.
Matt only wants "Mom" for her money, and he sees the kids as
competition. Bill looks skeptical.

Enter Matt&Van, surprised to see Bill. He is stiff when she tries to hug
him. Tries to leave, but Van stops him, wanting to break the big news.
He is a lot less than enthusiastic as she does so. "Congratulations,"
he says sardonically, and leaves.

Dinah cheerfully apologizes for hanging around; she just wanted to bond
with her little brother. She hopes they loved the opera (sly dig at
Matt). No, she doesn't need to talk to Vanessa anymore. Exit
Eurotrash -- almost. Just outside the door she bumps into Ross. What's he
doing here? "Vanessa and I are going to have a little talk. And you're
going to be there too."

(Lucy/Brent)

When your kid goes crazy w/the blender, you oughtta do more than just
grab the paper towels. I mean, really.

OUTSIDE LEWIS HOUSE: Dinah worriedly asks what Ross plans to say. He
replies that he should tell Van about the stolen money, but he won't.
Too embarrassing, and he doesn't want Van to know about Roger's
involvement. Dinah asks if he is still considering going to the cops?
"I can't. I made a deal with the devil." She deduces that this means
Rog, but Ross refuses to tell her what happened between them. She says
she can't stay long. "What, going to rob an orphanage?" Dinah feels
she's overstayed her welcome in Springfield. Ross has no comment. ;)
They enter the house.

Ross apologizes for the intrusion. Matt excuses himself. Ross rants
about Dinah constantly getting in trouble. Van realizes this is what
Dinah wanted to discuss earlier, and asks what the problem is. Dinah
makes imploring eyes at Ross. He tells Vanessa that he's never raised
a child before; she's the mother, she has to help him out.

Even ants love chocolate, so long as it's Hershey!

CROSS CREEK: Josh tells himself to go home. "You're acting like she's
real." As he says this, behind him we see a dresser drawer open itself.
He whirls and sees it standing open. Enter spooky music! He goes to
the drawer and pulls out Reva's diary, inscribed with her name. Opens
it and starts to read.

"Today Dylan rode us across the lake with me in my dress and
petticoats shaded by my parasol (As he speaks, his face fades into a
flashback of the scene being discussed. Reva in her white wedding garb
is in the boat, Dylan rowing.) We could see everybody on the shore
watching us, momma and daddy, Rusty and Billy, Harlan, Hampton. All of
our friends, yet (we see the boat reach the dock. Josh is waiting, in
a white tux. He lifts her out of the boat) but there on the deck standing
waiting for me was Joshua, the handsomest man alive...I knew someplace
deep down in my soul that he's the only one for me. Bud was reaching down
to help me out of the boat and as we stood there together (they kiss)
he smiled and said "will you marry me?" and I knew then that those were
the words I've been waiting to hear from him my whole life." He stops
and closes the diary. Looks at his and Reva's names carved inside a heart
on the fireplace. He's crying. Sits down on the couch, head in hands,
crying. Jumps in shock as a white dog jumps on him and starts licking. He
laughs and fondles the dog.

HOSPITAL: Annie yells at Rick. How dare he interfere with her
relationship with Josh? "Telling him things he should hear from me? Just
because I wasn't completely honest with you when we first went out." He
says she's overreacting. She demands to know what she was supposed to do,
give Josh an itemized list of all her former men? When Rick can get a
word in edgewise, he insists he didn't tell Josh anything. She stops
cold. "No, I don't think Josh'll care about the other men, Annie. Just
the one you married." If she'd told Rick about him, things could have
been different between them. Or maybe they wouldn't have gotten past the
first date, she counters. Lillian interrupts; Annie's needed. She tells
Rick she wants it to work out with Josh. "If you want a chance with him,
you gotta tell him about Jake." She looks stricken. Rick softens and
is sympathetic. He knows it's painful, but she's gotta do it. When she
finally told him, he understood all the lies she had been telling. She
apologetically says she didn't deal very well with their relationship.
He doesn't blame her, but it was frustrating. She asks him to promise
he won't tell Josh anything. "Did you hear what I just said to you?" She
leaves without answering. Rick looks pensive.

EVE'S LAB: She tries to show Ed her idea. He gently says it's only a
theory. She doesn't have a patient to try it on. She's enthused: the
other doctor who's working on the same thing thinks her idea is good.
Ed wants her to get some rest. She really believes her drug would
cause complete remission after 17 days. Why couldn't she be the one to
test it on? Ed firmly tells her she can't do it. The patient has to be
strong enough to withstand possible side effects, including possible
organ failure. [!] She's blinded by the possibility of finding a cure. He
insists that first she has to regain her strength.

Enter Annie; Ed asks her to take Eve back to her room. Eve reluctantly
agrees. He'll come to her room in an hour and tuck her in, kiss her
goodnight. Exit Ed. Eve asks for 5 minutes to finish what she was doing.
Annie offers to help. Eve surreptitiously pockets a syringe. Annie
clumsily drops a bunch of empty tubes and gets upset with herself.

CROSS CREEK: Josh asks the dog where it came from? Enter Otis, the
elderly caretaker. They make smalltalk. Otis offers to send his wife
over to cook, but Josh declines, saying he doesn't know how long he'll
be here. Otis says he should take a look at that flower patch Reva
planted. It's the darndest thing, but the Tulsa rosebush is in bloom.
Otis's missus says they don't bloom till the end of June. Josh makes a
lame excuse. "Summer was always Reva's favorite time," Otis observes.
Exit Otis and dog. Josh picks up the diary again.

"I'm back here to find sanity. Nothing but fights with Joshua.
Sometimes I wonder how two people could love each other so much and
cause each other so much pain. Or do those two things just have to go
together?" He sighs. Closeup of fire. He puts the diary down again on
the mantle, and kneels by the fire, teary again. We see a shot of him
from behind.

Suddenly, behind him, the diary and a red rose fall from the sky onto
a table. He jumps, turns. Stares at where he just put the diary, and
it's no longer there. He walks to the table and seizes the diary. The
rose marks a place. He begins to read again.

"We're back here now, just Bud and me...it's like finding out who I am
again after a long season of vain pretending. I know now who I am, a
woman in love with her husband, the light of my eyes." As he reads, we
begin to hear Reva's voice saying the same words along with him. "The
reason I live again. The vessel of all my hopes." Josh's voice trails
off, but Reva continues. "Joshua," she goes on, "it was a long long
journey back here after an endless time apart. but I finally know in
the depths of my soul that nothing will ever come between us...in heaven,
or on earth. Joshua and I are destined to be together. we belong to one
another, always." He is crying again. In unison they repeat "Always."

What most people don't know is that alligators' skin is really not
that dry and awful. Scaly, yes. Dry, no.

OUTSIDE LEWIS HOUSE: Matt attempts to engage Bill in dialogue. The
Matt-ster thinks Vanessa is upset that she wasn't there when Bill got
back. Bill sullenly says he's sure they were having fun. Matt says no,
not really. He attempts to build rapport by talking about how lame
opera is. Bill looks mildly amused. Matt asks what's going on? He tries
to give Bill the sensitive "I understand your issues" speech. Bill isn't
buying it. Matt asks will the guys at school give him a hard time
about his mom marrying Matt? They already are. Bill just wants to know
where the newlyweds will live. Matt asks him for input. Bill points
out that this is not really Matt's house. Matt says he knows that,
they's why he's thinking of building them a new place. Bill asks where
he'll live? Matt says with them, of course. Matt doesn't want to take
the place of Bill's dad. Bill says it's a good thing, because he never
could. Exit Sulky Teen from Hell.

Inside, Ross tells Vanessa that Dinah has too much free time on her
hands, needs structure. Van is relieved; she's been saying that for a
long time. Ross says "little things" made him change his mind. She needs
a job. Van laughs that Dinah rarely gets involved in "little things,"
but adds that she's offered EuroTrash a job at Lewis Oil several
times. Dinah tries to break into the discussion, but they completely
ignore her. Van tells Ross that Dinah can start tomorrow. Dinah says
no way is she taking some awful secretary job where she'll be chained
to a desk. She can go to Rio or Buenos Aires or somewhere and find
her friends, she doesn't have to stay in "Mayberry." Ross says no way.
He's swiped her passport. Dinah is infuriated. "That's stealing!"
Unfortunately they don't make enough of this irony. ;) Ross pulls out
the "It's for your own good" line. Dinah can't believe her parents are
keeping her hostage. Van says Dinah can report to work at 8:30 AM.
Dinah is shocked: She can't get up that early! Ross points out that
she won't be getting up at 8:30, she'll be getting up even earlier, to
be at work at 8:30. "Congratulations, you're a taxpayer."

(Brent/Lucy)

Commercial.

(Brent/Lucy)

HOSPITAL LAB: Eve enters under cover of darkness, prepares to inject
herself again. She stares at the needle for a moment, then does so.

(Lucy)

LEWIS HOUSE: Matt asks if it's OK for him to come back in. It is.
Dinah seethes. Ross says he'll wait in his car to take her to the
boardinghouse, then pick her up early tomorrow morning and take her
to work. Van follows Ross out, pausing to tell Matt the news about
Dinah's new job.

Left alone, Matt taunts Dinah about her new job and being up early.
Guess she'll be up before him, she'll have to make the coffee. He rubs
it in, HARD. She continues to seethe.

CROSS CREEK: Josh wipes his face, takes out his wallet and removes the
photo of Reva, puts it in the diary. Returns diary and rose to the
drawer. Picks up the phone and calls Cedars, asks them to page Annie.
He knows she's busy, but it's important.

A finger pushes down the phone button. Josh spins around. Reva's
seated on the sofa, in white blouse and tight red-hot pants. "Why call
her, Bud...when you've got me?" She chuckles.

Fade to black. The end!

***THE LUCY/BRENT THING***

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy enters her room, flashlight in hand. (The
boardinghouse lights remain off for the entire episode.) Nervously
listening to the thunder outside, she removes her earrings and goes
to the balcony to look out.

Outside her door, lamp in hand, Brent grasps the doorknob....

Lucy, nibbling her fingernails, breaks one and goes to sit on the bed
and file it. She sees the doorknob turn and freezes. Jumps up. "Hello?
Bridget?...David?"

Outside, Brent scowls grimly.

Lucy stares in terror at the door. Suddenly a car alarm goes off
outside. She runs to the window/door that leads to the balcony. Car
alarm stops. She closes window, turns around. A very frightening chord
strikes as she beholds Brent. Brent looks truly Norman Bates.

Cowering in terror, Lucy tells Brent to leave. He tells her to listen
up, and locks the door when she tries to run around him and get out.
She threatens to scream, but he points out that no one's home. "We've
had a misunderstanding." She denies this, trembling. "What do you think
happened? Why are you spreading this stuff around about me? You've
RUINED me!!!!" Brent begins to get angry, and looks dangerous. A-M
fired him, his career is shot, and now Lucy's trying to sabotage his
sex life. What did he do to deserve this? Nothing, she stammers. Mocking,
he makes her repeat it twice. She begs him to leave. He refuses. "Not
until I'm 100% certain that you've told your last lie."

Lucy is terrified, and willing to say almost anything to make Brent
leave. "What do you want me to say? Nothing happened between us. Nothing
happened at all." He asks if that's what she told Mindy? How nice he is?
How much *fun* they had on their *date*? [His emphasis on those words,
not mine.] No, he didn't think so. "Mindy came back to my apartment
tonight for a drink...You know; you've been there." She had the
impression he was going to jump her. He doesn't know why. Did she get
it from Lucy? "You didn't hurt her, did you?" Lucy asks timidly. "I
could never hurt a woman. I'm much better at loving a woman than I am at
playing some pain game. You should know that, Lucy." He shoves her
against the wall, his face right next to hers. "You know that, don't
you, Lucy? You know me, you know that I love women." She agrees
frantically, begs him to leave again. No, he thinks she's a little
delusional about the night he "made love" to her. (We can see Brent's
face reflected in the mirror that he has Lucy pinned against.) Does she
think he forced himself on her? She is having rape flashbacks now. She
has her head turned away in the same position as in the flashback, and
she is crying "No, no" as he talks, but she's talking to the Brent in t
he flashback, not the one in the room now. He insists he didn't do
anything she didn't want. He grips her face and tells her he has witnesses
from the roadhouse, he can prove that she was all over him. She cries no,
no no, and pushes him away and sits on the bed. He demands that she tell him,
then, what did happen? Closeup on Lucy's hand gripping her nailfile.

Brent grabs Lucy's arm and takes away the nailfile. She sobs to leave
her alone. He shakes her. "You gonna try to stab me? You hate me that
much? or do you hate yourself?" She sobs more, looking like a little
rag doll as he shakes her. He tells her she wanted it. She keeps saying no.
He throws her on the bed, he's on top of her, shaking her. She starts
yelling "You raped me, you raped me, you raped me!"

Enter Alan-Michael.

Fade to black as Lucy's cry continues "You raped me, you raped me..."

A-M pulls Brent off Lucy and begins beating him up, landing punch
after punch as Brent defiantly says that Lucy is lying, that she asked
for it, etc....A-M yanks him into the hallway. Another punch, Brent
tumbles down the stairs. Another, he spills out into the kitchen,
slams into the kitchen table. A-M yanks him to his feet and shoves
him out the door. "You ever come back here again, I don't care if I
have to spend the rest of my life in jail, I'll kill you." Throws him
over the porch railing, onto the grass. Amazingly, Brent gets up and
limps away. A-M watchs triumphantly. Lightning flashes.

Calling Lucy's name, A-M returns to the bedroom. The mirror is smashed,
either from Lucy being slammed against it or Brent. The balcony door
stands open. A-M runs to it and calls again "Lucy!" No sign of her.
He looks around her room once more, and runs out.

*whew*

I think I'm going to have nightmares.

Till next week,
