GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, MAY 5, 1995

HIGHLIGHTS
* A newspaper article sets Tangie free. But at what cost to Ross?
* Dinah searches in vain for understanding & settles for vengeance.
* Mindy pooh-poohs Lucy's vague warnings & heads home with Brent.
* Alan-Michael broods over Lucy. Eleni concludes it's over with Brent.
* Matt decides that opera's not all it's cracked up to be.

POLICE DEPT: Cutter begs Tangie to reveal her source, so she doesn't have
to go to the County Jail. She steadfastly refuses. Fletch & Holly show up
to inform Cutter of what their competition is saying: BABE DROPS COP,
LANDS IN JAIL. Both Cutter & the DA wonder how this made the paper. Tangie
appears equally confused. The DA pulls Cutter & Tangie aside for a talk.

REARDON KITCHEN: Dinah is aghast that her father would even consider
turning her over to the police. Ross points out that she did steal $75K &
he's having trouble believing she's his daughter. Dinah protests that she
was scared & confused; Ross doesn't want to hear it. He's sick over how he
kept standing up for her, to the point of almost ruining his marriage. And
now he's done something really despicable--he doesn't say what. He's
terribly disappointed that she turned to Roger, of all people. She
apologizes, but he can't even stand to look at her. He leaves & Dinah
looks miserable. She grabs her purse & runs out.

ROADHOUSE: Brent looks around for Mindy, who hasn't returned from the
ladies' room. Doris saw her go outside with Lucy.

Outside, Lucy is trying to warn Mindy against going back to Brent's place,
but she won't say why. Mindy thinks it's because Lucy still likes him, but
Lucy says that's not it at all. Brent watches from a distance. Lucy says
she liked Brent "before." She intimates that all he's interested in is
sex. Mindy says it's not all that uncommon "in guys his age." Lucy can see
she's not getting through to Mindy, who seems more concerned with an
impending thunderstorm. Lucy starts to describe her last date with Brent,
but stops short. "It's just that he said the same things to me that I
heard him saying to you inside." Mindy is offended that Lucy was
eavesdropping. Lucy couldn't help it. "He starts out being very nice and
then... he changes." Mindy is very impatient, and then Brent interrupts,
so Lucy doesn't get a chance to say anymore. Brent's ready to take off &
Mindy agrees. "Hey, Luce, I hope you're not giving me a bad rep," he says.
Lucy just glares at him. Brent & Mindy leave.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: AM is on the phone to his lawyer, saying that he
fired Brent for unprofessional behavior & wonders if Brent has any legal
recourse. AM says he didn't have a problem with Brent's work, but he
deserved to be fired. He tells the lawyer to get back to him & hangs up.
Distant thunder booms. AM calls Lucy & gets her chipper machine message.
He hangs up.

LEWIS HOUSE: Van is all decked out for the opera. She's chatting with her
dad. She hopes Matt likes the opera -- it's his first time. Van thanks her
dad for baby-sitting Peter. Bill is still out of town on a field trip. If
he calls, Henry should tell Bill that his mom loves him very much. She
hopes he'll be OK when he learns about her engagement to Matt. Henry
thinks it will be fine, since Bill has come to like Matt. What matters
most is how she tells him. The doorbell rings & Van begs reassurance about
her looks from Daddy. It's Dinah at the door, not Matt, and she's in a
tizzy. Van says it's not a good time, but Dinah says she's in real
trouble. Matt shows up right behind her.

POLICE STATION: In an office, the DA reads from the newspaper to Tangie &
Cutter. The article hints that when Cutter couldn't get it on with Tangie,
he stuck her in jail.

Outside, Fletch bemoans that he got scooped & wonders where the
competition got the story. He suspects it has some basis in truth, based
on the reaction it got from T & C. Fletch didn't know anything was going
on with them. "Maybe they didn't either," suggests Holly, and then
suddenly, something just sparked. Sort of like it happened with them.

The DA demands answers. Cutter says he & Tangie don't have a relationship
now. What about before, asks the DA. Cutter doesn't answer. The DA demands
to know, "Are you in love with this woman?"

Ross arrives & tells Levy he wants to see Tangie. Levy tells him to wait
in line. Fletch wants Ross to "sue the socks off" the Mirror reporter. He
shows Ross the article. Winkle, the reporter in question, arrives & digs
at Fletch for being scooped on a story about his own reporter. Ross looks
miserable. [I think Winkle is the guy to whom Ross gave a story the other
day. This must have been what it was.]

Cutter admits he's in love with Tangie. The DA is pissed that Cutter
didn't mention their relationship. He thinks the department looks foolish.
Cutter clarifies that since Tangie didn't return his feelings, there
wasn't any "relationship." The DA concludes that Tangie dumped Cutter &
berates him for pursuing a case in which he was emotionally involved.
"I'll have your badge for this," he promises. Tangie protests that Cutter
was just doing his job. Ross enters & asks to see his client. The DA says
she's free to go; the charges are being dropped.

LEWIS HOUSE: Van asks if Dinah's problem can wait. Dinah insists on
talking to her mom in private. Matt goes outside. Dinah says that Ross is
furious at her. Van assures her daughter that Ross loves her. She urges
Dinah to get a good night's sleep & apologize to her dad in the morning.
Dinah thinks Van is trying to get rid of her. Van thinks it can at least
wait `til morning, "Can't it?" Sure, Dinah agrees, sarcastically. She
storms out. Van & Matt leave for the opera. After they go, Dinah returns
to talk to Henry. He invites her in for a glass of sherry. She looks very
sad & gives him a big hug.

ROADHOUSE: Frank is bummed because they're car broke down, so they
couldn't get home ahead of everyone else for some private nookie time.
Eleni rationalizes that at least they were close enough to the Roadhouse
to walk back & get help. She suggests they dance while they wait for the
tow truck. Frank would rather do what they were planning earlier. He
kisses her meaningfully.

Inside, David dances & flirts with a pretty black woman. David excuses
himself to check on Lucy. She asks him to take her home.

BRENT'S PLACE: Thunder booms & lightning flashes as Brent opens the door.
The weather doesn't scare Mindy. "I like a woman who isn't afraid of
everything," says Brent. He welcomes her to his parlor.

OPERA HOUSE: Van & Matt have the Spaulding box all to themselves. Her dad
& Brandon took the box years ago. As they sit, Matt tells her they can do
this another time if Van is concerned about Dinah. Van says it will keep
`til morning, but she appreciates his concern.

ROADHOUSE: David agrees to take Lucy home. Frank & Eleni pass them. Frank
is sure there's something wrong with Lucy. Eleni concludes that Lucy &
Brent must have broken up, since they didn't speak all night. Frank seems
relieved to hear this, but doesn't tell Eleni about Bridget's suspicions,
just that they didn't pan out. He wants to dance. AM enters.

BRENT'S PLACE: Brent offers Mindy a glass of wine & she accepts, but says
she can't stay long. She is impressed by the view & figures he must be
doing pretty well at Spaulding. He says he's doing OK. They sit on the
couch with their wine. He asks how long she was married. "Which time?" she
asks, with a laugh. She admits she's made a lot of mistakes in her life &
says her marriage to Nick only lasted a couple of years. Brent feels sorry
for Nick & thinks Mindy is a very beautiful woman. "He must miss you a
lot." Mindy thinks Brent is sweet. He proposes a toast to "new
beginnings." He starts playing with her hair & says it was the first thing
he noticed about her. He kisses her.

POLICE STATION: Winkle has his ear to the office door until Levy shoots
him a nasty look. Winkle makes himself scarce. Fletch is anxious to find
out what's going on. The office empties out & Tangie calls Winkle a pig.
Everyone learns that Tangie is free to go & the DA says he'll issue a
statement later. Tangie is concerned about Cutter & wants to know where
Winkle got his story. Ross just wants to get her out of the police
station. Tangie insists that both she & Cutter were just doing their job.

Fletch hates Winkle's methods, but likes his results. Holly thinks Winkle
isn't smart enough to have come up with the story on his own. She thinks
someone else was behind it--probably Tangie's source.

Ross accosts Winkle at a pay phone & warns that no one can ever know that
Ross gave him the story. Winkle says he also protects his sources.

LEWIS HOUSE: Dinah thinks Van doesn't care about her. Henry insists that
this isn't so, but they do get their signals crossed a lot. He doesn't
understand the antagonism between them. Dinah thinks her mom feels she
*should* care & she feels guilty, but that's not the same as loving her.
Bill arrives home a day early. "What's happening? Where's mom?" he asks.
Dinah smiles.

OPERA HOUSE: Matt watches something avidly through the glasses, until Van
asks what he's doing. He puts the glasses away. She asks if he's following
the story, & he says he is. Van is enthralled by the music & Matt feigns
enthusiasm. It's obvious he's not really into it.

ROADHOUSE: AM sulks at the bar. Eleni joins him & asks what's wrong. She
guesses that it's Lucy. AM thinks he's the last thing Lucy needs right
now. Eleni disagrees. She tells him that Brent & Lucy have obviously
broken up & mentions that Lucy just left.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy encourages David to go back to the Roadhouse to dance
with the cute girl. She assures him that she won't be alone. David
reluctantly agrees & tells her that whatever's wrong will eventually pass.
Lucy enters & calls, "Hello!" but gets no answer. The house is apparently
empty. Thunder booms & lightning flashes. The lights go out.

ROADHOUSE: Eleni suggests that AM call Lucy, but he says he already has.
Eleni thinks he should try again. "She looked so sad when she left."

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy lights a candle & starts to make tea. The thunder
booms again. Then the phone rings. Lucy looks afraid to answer.

ROADHOUSE: AM lets the phone ring several times.

BRENT'S PLACE: After a passionate kiss, Mindy tells Brent, "You know, she
was wrong about you. You're not really pushy at all. But you are
definitely very physical." Brent asks what she's talking about & Mindy
fills him in on Lucy's "warning." She guesses that Lucy & Brent dated for
awhile. She says she didn't take Lucy very seriously. "I wouldn't want you
talking to my ex-husband," she admits. Exes aren't very objective. Brent
wonders what Lucy said. Mindy doesn't tell. Brent gets up from the couch,
so Mindy can't see his face, which isn't looking too carefree. She asks if
Brent broke Lucy's heart. He says it never got that serious. They just
dated. She's a little young, he adds. Mindy also thinks Lucy is "a little
young for her own age. Boy, she must have thought you were a handful."
Brent remembers that he has an early meeting & asks for a raincheck on the
rest of their date. Mindy leaves, after making Brent promise that he'll
call her. He sees her out, then picks up his wineglass & takes a sip. He
hurls the glass across the room with a cry of frustration.

POLICE STATION: Ross thinks the thief may never be caught, but everything
will be OK because the money's back & Tangie's out of jail. Fletch is
still curious about Winkle's story. Tangie joins them. Holly suggests a
celebration, but Tangie just wants to go home. Ross offers a ride, but she
wants to talk to Cutter first. Fletch & Holly leave.

The DA tells Cutter to take 2 weeks off or face suspension. Tangie
overhears. She tells Cutter the story was a piece of crap & she knows he
wasn't being vindictive. Cutter says she's wrong--he was mad at her. He
tries to stop the conversation, but Tangie persists. "Can we still be
friends?" she asks. Cutter doesn't answer.

OPERA: Matt asks Van what about the story. She says it's "the usual
complicated love story." Matt asks for specifics. It's about an old woman
and her young lover. She really loves him, but she gives him up to a
younger woman. But operas always have sad endings. Matt takes Van's hand.

LEWIS HOUSE: Henry takes Bill's duffle upstairs. Bill asks if Dinah's in
trouble again. "You don't know, do you?" she asks. "They don't care about
anyone but themselves." Bill doesn't know what she's talking about. Dinah
decides she shouldn't tell him. They'll kill her if she does. Now she has
to tell him, Bill insists. OK, she agrees. (Twist her arm.) "You're mother
& Matt are getting married." Bill sits straight up. "What?!"

ROADHOUSE: Frank tells Eleni their car is ready. They start to leave &
Frank spots AM. He asks what they were talking about earlier. Lucy, of
course. Frank surprises himself by deciding that AM is better than Brent.
They leave.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy sits in the dark with her tea. She starts when the
clock chimes. She gets up & gathers fixings for coffee, but she keeps
starting at every little noise. The lights flash on briefly, then go out
again. As the lightning flashes, we see a man's shadow outside the front
door, but Lucy does not. She goes upstairs with a flashlight. The front
door opens & a man enters. He picks up the lantern & heads for the
stairway. As he opens the stairway door, we see that it is Brent. He
climbs the stairs in Lucy's wake as the screen fades to black.
