GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE - THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 1998

HIGHLIGHTS:
* Harley teams up with Lillian & pursues the truth with a vengeance.
* Josh & Cassie tell Buzz that Reva had a nervous breakdown.
* Cassie blows up at Michael when she finds him talking to Dinah.
* Josh loses it & admits the awful truth of his feelings to the clone.
* Alan tries to convince Phillip to work with him to protect Beth.
* Reva psychoanalyzes Sean, convincing him to do the right thing.

CEDARS: Harley sees how upset Lillian is, and urges her to spill her
guts. Lillian finally cracks. When Beth was a teen-ager, Lillian
failed her, so when Lillian found out about Carl, all she wanted to do
was protect Beth. The problem is, Carl ended up dead & Lillian feels
responsible. She cries on Harley's shoulder.

LEWIS HOUSE: Buzz wants to know why Reva's acting so strangely. Last
night she didn't recognize him & today she said they had a "marriage
made in heaven." Josh suggests that Reva was just pulling Buzz's leg.
Cassie says Reva's tired from her trip. Buzz isn't buying any of this.
He wants to know what happened to the old Reva, and how they can get
her back. "We don't," says Josh in frustration. "The old Reva is gone
for good." Buzz looks at Josh with interest; Cassie looks nervous.

ISLAND: Reva stares out to sea & tells Josh her troubles. Sean won't
let her leave. He says he loves her & can make her love him. He wants
her to forget about everything at home, let it all go. But he doesn't
understand what they have. She wonders what Josh is doing & what goes
through his head when he can't sleep at night. She tells him not to be
sad. She wishes she could let him know she's alive & fighting to get
home. She begs him to not give up, because she won't.

Sean approaches. Reva says he may have destroyed the raft, but he'll
never destroy her.

LEWIS HOUSE: Buzz demands answers. Josh thinks Buzz has a right to
know. He says Reva hasn't been herself lately. When Annie came after
her with a knife at her throat, that sent Reva over the edge. Cassie
adds that Reva was an emotional wreck & it got to the point where she
couldn't cover it up anymore, couldn't keep the kids from seeing how
messed up she was. Josh explains that Reva went to Florida to get her
head together. Cassie says she's doing much better, but she's not
exactly herself. "So what are you telling me?" asks Buzz. Cassie says
Reva had a nervous breakdown.

DINER: Michael sits alone in a booth, reading a scientific
publication. Dinah approaches & says "Baaa!" Michael doesn't get it at
first, but she explains that she saw he was reading about cloning.
They agree that it's fascinating stuff. Michael tries to go back to
his article, but Dinah wants to chat. She joins him in the booth &
says she was thinking about doing a show on cloning, but wasn't sure
how it would go over with the audience. Michael wishes her good luck.
Dinah asks for his opinion; he thinks it's one of the greatest
scientific breakthroughs of all time. Dinah jokes that the world
hardly needs more sheep. Michael says the research could go a lot
further, such as cloning a person. Dinah figures whoever could do it
first would get all kinds of patents & research grants, not to mention
the Nobel prize. Michael says he never thought of it that way.

LEWIS HOUSE: Buzz understands how difficult things must have been for
Cassie & Josh. He asks if there's any way he can help. Josh just asks
him to keep it quiet. Buzz feels badly for Reva. Cassie says she's
taking her medication & she'll be OK. The clone walks in. She hopes
they haven't been talking about her.

Josh asks if she got Marah to school. The clone says yes. She knows
they were talking about her. Cassie says Buzz was concerned, so they
had to tell him about her illness. Buzz apologizes to the clone for
nosing around. He understands that things have been rough for her.
"You told him I was some kind of whacked out psycho," accuses the
clone. But she says she's never felt better in her life.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan tries to apologize to Phillip, but Phillip has
no interest in listening. Alan realizes that Phillip blames him for
bringing Carl into Beth's life, & this is why Phillip is trying to
implicate him in Carl's murder. But they both know Alan was nowhere
near the pond that night. Alan thinks Phillip is protecting Beth. He
likens Phillip to himself, by protecting someone he loves. Phillip
disavows any comparisons between himself & Alan. Alan offers to help
Phillip protect Beth, but Phillip wants nothing from Alan. Alan says
sooner or later the police will discover that Beth is guilty, but
together, they can keep her out of jail.

"Don't you ever give up, Alan?" asks Beth, as she descends the stairs.
She informs Phillip that she's already told Alan where to go.

LEWIS HOUSE: The clone says she feels great; like a whole new person.
She can believe that Cassie would make up stories about her mental
condition, but she can't believe Josh would back her up. She asks Josh
to tell Buzz the truth. Buzz apologizes again for interfering. Josh
asks Buzz to excuse them. Reva says everything would be fine if Cassie
would stay off her back & get a life. Cassie can't hold on to her
tongue. "I had a life before you came along!" she retorts. Josh tells
them both to calm down. He asks Cassie to leave with Buzz for awhile.

Outside, Cassie curses the clone. Buzz thinks that's no way to talk
about someone who had a nervous breakdown. He asks what's going on.
Cassie says it's not his concern, then stalks off. Buzz follows her,
saying she's going to tell him the truth.

Inside, the clone asks how Josh could let Cassie say she's crazy. She
did a really good job last night & everyone thought she was the real
Reva. Josh says none of this would have happened if she had just taken
Marah to school like she promised. She says she was just trying to
bond with his daughter. She must be crazy to think she could do this.

Josh explodes. He says she's not crazy; he is. He was insane to think
he could use her to replace Reva. He throws things around the room &
pulls all the welcome-home signs off the wall, yelling all the while
about how nuts he was to have done this. The clone says she did
everything he asked. Josh yells that it's his fault, not hers. Reva is
dead & he couldn't handle the thought of living without her, so he
asked Michael to do this terrible thing. He convinced himself that he
was doing it for the kids, but the truth is that he did it because he
wants his Reva back. The clone watches this outburst in fear &
distress, her hands held to either side of her face.

ISLAND: Reva asks if Sean feels like a big man for destroying the
raft, knowing she has no clue how to put it back together & it will
take a miracle for her to get home now. No, says Sean. Reva says she
won't stay down for long. She vows to go back out on the water, even
if she has to hold up the sail by hand. And if she capsizes, she
doesn't want him to rescue her. She'd rather die than be near him
again. She's going back out. Sean says he can't let her do that.

Reva says he can't stop her from going back to the only man she'll
ever love. She could never love a man like Sean. He's the total
opposite of Josh. Sean ran away from his problems; Josh would have
stayed & fought. [Yeah, that's why he cloned you before even finding
your body!] Sean gave up & came to this island to die. He gave up on
humanity. He should just kill himself now. He might be innocent of
murder, but he's a pathetic, sad coward & a shallow excuse for a man.
Sean grabs her & kisses her. She pushes him away & slaps him across
the face.

DINER: Buzz & Cassie enter through the back. Buzz still wants to know
what's going on, but Cassie just wants to use the phone. She walks out
to the counter & sees Dinah talking with Michael. She hears him
talking about cloning & goes over. Dinah says maybe Michael could be a
guest expert if she does a show on cloning. Cassie asks what they're
doing & Dinah says it's none of her business. Michael tells Cassie
it's OK. Dinah asks what Cassie's problem is. Cassie pushes into the
booth beside Michael & immediately spills a drink on Dinah, causing
her to have to go clean herself up.

Cassie takes Michael outside to talk. She accuses him of getting ready
to tell Dinah about cloning Reva. Michael explains that they were just
talking about the article he was reading, and cloning in general.
Dinah wasn't suspicious about anything until Cassie barged in. Cassie
looks abashed.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan says he wants a chance to right the wrong he
did to Phillip & Beth. Phillip says it's too late. Alan says it's
never too late to put your family back together. He urges Phillip to
do it for Lizzie. Beth starts to back Alan up, so Phillip pulls her
aside to try to talk some sense into her. She urges him to hear Alan
out. He's right about Lizzie. They should forget about everything else
& focus on her.

Alan thanks Beth for saying this. He admits that he's finally realized
how important Beth is to the family. She's given him a wonderful
granddaughter & proved to be a devoted mother. And he'll never forget
her kind words when everything blew up with Annie. In crisis, family
has to pull together. It's been his dream for them all to live under
the same roof together. Phillip asks why they should be willing to do
that. Because of what he will do to help them, says Alan. He knows
about Beth's shoes. If they all stick together, they can get through
this. If they give him a chance, he'll show them how they can do it.

Phillip has heard this a zillion times before & isn't buying it. Alan
says if they don't stand together, they risk the worst.

CEDARS: Lillian tells Harley that she contacted J.C. Clayton because
she wanted to get Carl out of town. She wasn't planning to commit
murder. Harley says they shouldn't panic. She asks if Lillian has told
Beth. No, says Lillian. She's only told Harley. Oh, and Alan knows
too. Lillian explains that he overheard her phone conversation with
Clayton after the murder. He promised to keep quiet if she agreed to
take the blame for intercepting Beth's letter to Phillip. Harley is
not exactly surprised. Lillian realizes she shouldn't have gone along
with Alan, but the idea of going to prison terrifies her.

Harley says Lillian has to stop blaming herself for Carl's murder.
They don't know that Clayton was the killer. All they know is that
Lillian gave him money. They have to find out who killed Carl &
they're going to do it by stopping all the lies. Harley gets up &
heads for the door, all fired up. Lillian follows her.

SPAULDING MANSION: Phillip says Harley can be trusted to keep her
mouth shut about Beth's shoes. Alan says Harley is an ex-cop & she
also knows that the only thing standing between her & Phillip is Beth.
Furthermore, her brother is investigating the murder. Phillip says he
trusts Harley. Alan says Harley is the reason Carl came to town in the
first place, & she made every effort to prove that Beth wasn't the
woman Phillip thought she was. Phillip claims that's all irrelevant.
Alan knows Harley & Phillip love each other, but she's a threat to the
family. Phillip asks what Alan wants him to do. Alan says he needs to
stand firm with him & Beth. It's not about choosing sides, but about
protecting his child's mother.

Harley & Lillian enter. Alan asks what Harley is doing there.
"Breaking up a Norman Rockwell moment, obviously," she quips. She &
Lillian have decided it's time to solve Carl's murder. "Any
objections?" she asks.

LEWIS HOUSE: The clone says Josh is scaring her. He apologizes, but
says he's scared too. He cries that he's been scared from the moment
Michael brought her into his life. He's been scared about what she
would think & do & want from him. But what scares him the most is that
there are times he forgets that she's not his Reva. The clone asks why
that's so bad. Josh says it's bad because he loves her so much misses
her so terribly. He feels like the clone is asking him to forget about
the woman he's loved his entire life & that she's asking him to be
unfaithful to her. The clone said she never meant to do that. She
loves him the way she thought he wanted her to.

Josh says it's moving way too fast for him. He hasn't had time to
mourn the end of his life with Reva. The stories he's told her about
Reva aren't just anecdotes; they're real. They're about the only woman
he was ever meant to be with. The woman he'd die for, the woman he
wishes he'd died for. The clone points out that Reva is dead & Josh is
alive. It's not their fault that Reva is dead. She thinks they should
help make each other's pain go away. She's sad too, and lonely. Josh
wishes he could transfer his love for Reva to the clone, but he can't.

"Then what am I supposed to do?" cries the clone. "I never had a
choice, but you did. I didn't ask to be hatched, but loving you was
just part of the deal." She loves Josh & can't help wanting him. And
every time he turns away from her, she wants to die. Josh never meant
to hurt her. "But you still are." She did everything he asked, but she
doesn't know what to do now. "You tell me. You tell me what Reva would
do now."

ISLAND: Sean says he can't take any more. He never meant for any of
this to happen. Reva barged into his life & made him feel things he
never wanted to feel again. Everything was fine until she came along.
Reva thinks he just had it all bottled up & was just waiting for her
to show up, so he could let it all out. She says he uses anger to
cover hurt, sarcasm to cover tenderness & violence to cover fear. He's
lost, but too proud & arrogant to admit it. She doesn't hate him, but
she wishes she'd known him before he turned into what he is now. She
bets he was something, once. Something changes on Sean's face. He
tells her to come with him. She refuses, saying she has to fix the
raft. Sean takes her hand & tells her again to come with him.

DINER: Michael goes inside to grab his coat & his notes, then goes
back outside with Cassie. She says her life would be a whole lot
easier if the secret came out; she wouldn't have to lie to Hart
anymore. But those feelings are just selfish. Her problems & his
frustrations are nothing compared to the nightmare that they'd face if
the truth came out in public. Michael says as a research scientist,
it's frustrating to have made a breakthrough like this & not be able
to talk about it or take the credit. Think about the good that can
come from his work. They could clone healthy organs for terminally ill
patients.... "Oh, go clone yourself!" yells Cassie. She asks him to
promise that he won't tell anyone about this. He agrees. Through the
window, Dinah sees them arguing.

LEWIS HOUSE: Josh doesn't know what to tell the clone to do. He
doesn't know what he's doing himself. The clone promises to do better
& to play the part of Reva perfectly. Josh says the problem is that
she's just pretending to be Reva; she isn't really Reva. "But that's
all I know how to be," cries the clone. "That's all I can be." Josh
says the clone is like Reva in so many ways. It's so hard for him. He
wants to touch her & kiss her. He wishes he could close his eyes & the
clone would become Reva, but she can't. The clone says she could if he
would give her the chance. He says it would never work, because he
can't be what she needs him to be. He did all of this because he loves
Reva. "I sold my soul for my children, but I can't sell my heart.
That's the price I have to pay for letting Michael do this & it's
tearing me apart."

The clone never realized how hard it was for Josh to have her there.
She thought he had to love her. She took advantage of that, but she
didn't mean to. This life is so new to her & she doesn't do it very
well, and she's even worse at being Reva. The reason she took Marah
out to breakfast was to try to find a way to make Josh happy. She'd do
anything for him. Marah told her they should go to Cross Creek because
he loves it there. "Take me to Cross Creek. Let me show you that I can
be the Reva you need me to be." Josh says she shouldn't have to become
someone else for him. She's a wonderful, beautiful, smart woman, but
she's not Reva. "She's gone & you can't take her place." The clone
looks very sad.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan doesn't appreciate Harley barging in. Phillip
starts to step in, but Harley doesn't need him to defend her. She says
it's time for the truth to come out. Alan & Phillip both try to shut
Harley up, but she says it concerns Beth. Beth says she won't put up
with any more of Harley's wild accusations. Lillian tries to get Beth
to listen. Beth accuses Lillian of being on Harley's side. Phillip
shouts above the din that he wants to hear what Harley has to say.

Harley says the truth is that all of them have lied about Carl's
murder. She tried pushing down her own instincts, even when clues were
smacking her in the face. "This stops here & now. No one leaves this
room until we piece together exactly what happened the night Carl was
shot. And when we find out the truth, we'll know which one of us is a
murderer." As Harley says this, the camera focuses briefly on each
face in the room, ending with a nervous-looking Beth.

DINER: Outside, Cassie begs Michael to keep the secret & destroy his
notes. Michael pulls some papers off his pad & crumples them up.
Cassie thanks him & heads inside the diner. Michael smoothes out the
papers.

Inside, Dinah jumps on Cassie as soon as she returns. If she were the
suspicious type, she'd think Cassie was afraid that Michael would tell
her something Cassie didn't want her to know. And she wonders if Hart
knows what Cassie is up to with Michael. Cassie tells Dinah to stop
trying to get Hart back, and to worry about her own life & leave
Cassie's life alone. She stalks off. Buzz urges Dinah to take Cassie's
advice. Dinah says something weird is going on & she bets Buzz knows
what it is. He says it's none of her business.

LEWIS HOUSE: Josh surveys the damage from his tantrum. He picks up a
broken champagne flute, the last of a set HB gave him & Reva for their
wedding. Reva loved them. She used to say they were magic because when
the light hit the crystal a certain way, it would make a rainbow. The
clone sits beside Josh & tells him not to cry. They can buy more
glasses. Josh says maybe he'll just give a piece to Michael & so he
can clone a new set. Of course, they wouldn't be as good as the
originals because they wouldn't have the same magic. The clone looks
wounded & Josh apologizes.

He doesn't know what he's thinking or feeling right now. The clone
says it's OK. She knows his world feels upside-down, but she's there
for him. He turns to her & apologizes. He hugs her & says, "I'm sorry,
Reva." She says she's his Reva now. "Always." Josh stares at her.

ISLAND: Sean takes Reva to a spot & starts pulling some tarps & palm
fronds off a nice-sized boat. Reva is furious that this has been here
all along and he never told her. And now he's showing it to her just
to torture her? Sean says he's showing it to her so she can use it to
go home. He's going to help her. They can sail to the mainland in it.

Reva thought Sean was never going to leave the island. He says he'll
drop her off & then come back. She worries about what would happen if
someone sees him. He says he'll be careful. And he'll leave it up to
her to come up with a plausible story about how she got back. Reva
can't believe he's doing this. "Neither can I," he replies. He smiles
at her as the screen fades to black.
