A sunny morning in Springfield, USA...

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy tosses & turns, dreaming of the rape in stark black &
white images. She awakens suddenly & sits up in bed, shouting, "No!"
Bridget raps on the door, calling Lucy's name.

HOLLY'S COTTAGE: The door opens & Fletcher enters behind a bunch of
lilacs. Holly is asleep in bed.

[At this point, CBS interrupted with a 5-minute special report about new
developments in the Oklahoma City bombing.]

Holly complains about Fletch barging in on her at 7 AM and demands that
he give her coffee. She teases him about his cruel & unusual punishment
of withholding caffeine from a non-morning person. He forks over the
java. Fletch tells her they are going to start jogging at 6 AM. He thinks
she looks beautiful in the morning. Holly says Fletch can go jogging &
pick up breakfast, and she'll be waiting for him when he gets back. "I
could get used to this," Holly decides. They discuss the merits of
doughnuts as breakfast food. "Breakfast of champion editors," declares
Fletch, but notes that Ben prefers a high-cholesterol farm-style
breakfast. He asks whether Holly knows anything about cooking hash
browns. "I know nothing about cooking anything before noon," she replies.

She asks whether Fletch told his son anything about the previous night.
He says he gave Ben a capsule summary, figuring it was better to hear
about his rooftop declaration of love from his dad than out on the street
or in the newspaper. "He thinks I'm half-crazy, but half-cool," Fletch
says. He informs Holly that Ben is "part of the deal" & Holly says she
assumed that. She thinks Ben is a cool kid & hopes her relationship with
Fletch won't adversely affect his relationship w/Ben. Fletch isn't
worried about that, or about Roger. He notes that last night wasn't just
his declaration of love to her, but her declaration of independence from
Rog. "All 3 of us are free from Roger," he states, as though saying it
really makes it so.

JESSUP FARM: Dinah & Rog are under the covers. She asks if he's OK; he
looks like he saw a ghost. "Lucky for you, I'm real," she croons, and
kisses him. "Or were you expecting someone else?" she asks. Rog says he
just didn't know where he was when he first awoke. He thinks they should
get her back home before people start wondering where she is. "I'm
exactly where I want to be," she replies, trying to seduce him again. He
kisses her forehead & says that last night never should have happened.
She points out that she was the instigator & he put up a fair amount of
resistance. "I enjoy working to get a man out of his clothes."

Rog says she impressed him, and was the best-prepared Girl Scout he's
ever met. Which is a good thing, "because the fast lane is a pretty
deadly thoroughfare these days." End of obligatory safe-sex disclaimer.

Dinah slithers out of bed & into Rog's shirt. He watches with an
appreciative eye, then asks point-blank how old she is. "Old enough," she
laughs. She tells him to lighten up & says she saved him last night -- if
she hadn't picked him up he might have drunk himself into oblivion &
driven off a cliff. [And given that this is GL, this is not so unlikely!
Score another point for the writers recognition of history.] "Face it,
waking up here with me is better than waking up in the gutter," says
Dinah, clueless to how similar the 2 events really are. They kiss again &
Rog thanks Dinah for forestalling a night that could have turned out very
badly for him. Dinah thoughtlessly brings up Holly's stupidity for giving
Rog up & Rog gets a pained expression. Dinah says she has a "tiny (kiss)
little (kiss) favor to ask." She needs his help with a "teensy (kiss)
weensy (kiss) problem." As they giggle & kiss in bed, the camera pans
down to a suitcase under the bed. It is bulging open with cash.

DINER: Cutter hands Buzz his personal effects & warns him not to leave
town. Buzz sees Tangie & thanks her for her wonderful article, which he
credits with getting him out on bail. She says she was just doing her job
& heads over to Cutter's desk, where he is tapping away on his computer.
"I thought you didn't trust these things," comments T. Cutter retorts
that there are a lot of things (& people) he doesn't trust these days.
Tangie says her article was accurate, whether he likes it or not. His
case against Buzz is full of holes & he knows it. Where's all the cash
Buzz allegedly stole? Why aren't they looking for other suspects?

Cutter points out that they caught Buzz stealing the money. No, you
caught him taking *some* of the money, so the party consultant wouldn't
get her cut, & he could put the money aside for the people for whom it
was intended, corrects Tangie. Cutter thinks T is a sucker & tells her
that Buzz is a con man with a mile-long rap sheet. They argue over Buzz's
character & motives. Tangie doesn't want Cutter to take her article
personally & just wants to see Buzz get a fair shake. Cutter says he is
checking out other leads & she would have known if she had bothered to
ask. He walks away & she sees a file on his desk. The thinks about it for
a minute, then opens the file & starts reading.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy tells Jet that she's been having "silly anxiety
dreams" about work. She sits on the bed & holds her head as if she has a
horrific headache. Her shirt slips off her shoulder & Jet sees a bruise.
She thinks it looks like somebody grabbed Lucy, but L claims she slipped
in the shower. She puts on her robe & says she's got to get going because
it's late. She thanks Jet for her concern, but insists that she's fine.
Jet leaves, but she doesn't look happy about it.

JESSUP FARM: Dinah finds some music on the radio, then comes back to bed
when Rog beckons her. He wants to know about her "teeny weeny problem."
She says it will be a piece of cake for a man with his talents. The radio
broadcasts a news bulletin saying Buzz was released on $300,000 bail
after being arrested for stealing $75,000 worth of proceeds from the 5th
St. ball. Dinah is shocked to hear they think Buzz did it. Rog shushes
her so he can hear the rest of the report, which states that Buzz is
maintaining his innocence. Dinah laughs & Rog is surprised, but concludes
that a leopard can't change his spots. Dinah is delighted to hear that
there are no other suspects. As the announcer goes on to say that
everyone at the ball will be questioned, Dinah turns off the radio & Rog
protests. Dinah says she's "breaking in with a live report" & returns to
bed, kissing Rog. She leans under the bed & pulls out a satchel, which
she upends, spilling cash all over the bed. She laughs delightedly, but
Rog does not look amused.

SPAULDING MANSION: Buzz tells Alex that he didn't rob the ball & he has a
list of everyone who was there. He intends to find out who did it. He
knows about half the people, but the rest are from Alex's circle. Has
anyone had a sudden reversal of fortune? She can't think of anyone who
would risk this kind of damage to their reputation. Buzz asks Alex to
keep an eye out. She tells him not to worry. He says he's not worried;
he's innocent. Why should he wreck his own party?

Tangie enters with her costume in a box. She & Buzz are surprised to see
each other. Tangie seems wary. Buzz doesn't get it & leaves. Tangie
apologizes to Alex about the dress, but Alex tells her to save her "false
apologies" for Alan, "who obviously has a death wish."

DINER: Frank opens the diner to find Jet already there. Eleni let her in.
She wants to talk to Buzz, but he's not there. She wants to talk to Frank
instead, but he's too busy with the customers. She decides to wait. She's
not a happy camper. Eleni tells Frank that Jet is really upset & has been
waiting over an hour. She urges Frank to talk to Jet. He goes to her
booth. She asks where she can find Buzz. Frank says Buzz has a lot of
problems of his own to deal with -- can't someone else help her? "It's
not my problem, it's Lucy's," says Jet.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy combs her hair mechanically & stares at herself in
the mirror. She sees her bruise & angrily covers it up.

HOLLY'S COTTAGE: Fletch quotes poetry as he places the lilacs in a vase.
Holly plays critic to his choice of verse, then asks how attached he is
to her desk at the Journal. "I'd be a hell of a lot more attached to it
if I knew you were attached to it," he quips. Does this mean she's coming
back to work? Yes, if he doesn't mind. He's psyched. She hands the
newspaper to him & deplores the shoddy journalism -- not a single mention
of his public declaration of love. Fletch says he had a whole "Holly &
Fletcher issue" planned, but Buzz stole their headlines. "I wanted an
official document that I could paste on my refrigerator for future
reference," pouts Holly. Fletch asks if she's concerned she'll forget
what he said. She points out that it was crowded & noisy, but she did
catch the part about him doing her laundry for life. :-) "I said that?"
asks Fletch. He reminds her that he was a bit toasted when he made his
speech. She asks if that means he didn't mean it. He says he meant the
important parts, like trust, honesty, respect & no manipulation. And the
part about massaging her feet. And most of all, he meant the part about
really wanting her.

JESSUP FARM: Dinah says it was so easy to take the money -- the "yokels"
just left it sitting there & if she hadn't taken it, someone else would
have. She says it was also becoming a matter of life & death. "Go on,"
encourages Roger. Dinah explains that she borrowed money from "some
people" to pay off her credit card bills and now they've sent Viktor
Pachinov (?) after her. She owes them $50,000. She ran up the bills while
she was living on the Riviera. She wasn't working because "you don't work
on the Riviera, you have fun," which she did, plus the food was great.
She recaps how the credit card companies kept sending her new
applications every time another card hit the limit. Roger seems to find
this all a little incredible & slightly amusing. He makes a "tsk, tsk"
noise, to which Dinah replies indignantly that she had to eat.

She insists that she wasn't extravagant. She tears up as she tells about
when her friends went to Morocco & she couldn't go `cause she couldn't
afford it. "There's no point in living when you have to say no to fun all
the time," she whines. "Honey, you saying no? The mind reels," replies
Rog with a grin. Dinah barely smiles. She tells him how the credit card
companies started hounding her, always calling 1st thing in the AM (How
rude! Rog makes sympathetic noises.) & how she met these 2 guys who lent
her the money, but when she came to Springfield, they decided she was
running away, so they came after her. Viktor's been following her &
threatening her since she got to town. Rog notes that $50K is a lot of
money, especially when you don't have it. Dinah whines about how mean
Vanessa is being & how Ross can't possibly raise the money. Rog says he
knows Ross would do it if he could. What about Dinah's trust fund? Dinah
whines again about how mean Van is being. Of course, Dinah hasn't told
anyone about the danger she's in because she doesn't want to be lectured
about consorting with unsavory characters. [!] Rog should understand. But
now, everything is fine, Dinah says with delight. "We just have this one
little detail." "We?" asks Rog. "What's with this `we' business?"

SPAULDING MANSION: Tangie plays it real low-key, apologizing again to
Alex & stating that she thought the dress was from Fletcher. Alex doesn't
buy it -- Fletch could hardly afford the buttons on it. Tangie says she
didn't even want to go to the ball, she didn't know the dress was Alex's
grandmother's, and if she'd known it was from Alan, she would never have
worn it. Alex doesn't care; she thinks Tangie seemed to be having a nice
enough time. Alan enters, pleased to see Tangie, and Alex exits without
another word. Alan tells Tangie not to take Alex's anger personally, but
she's ticked not only because Alex is now furious at her, but because.
Alan manipulated her into dressing up like a doll for him. Alan says she
looked beautiful & elegant & was the envy of every other woman there. He
thinks she's protesting too much. "I think my little surprise made your
evening," he declares. Tangie says he was only feeding his ego, just like
he did at Xmas. It's no pleasure for her to be manipulated by him.

[Connie Chung interrupts with a special report on "Terror in the
Heartland," pre-empting the last 25 minutes of GL. If anyone in another
time zone saw the second half of the show & can fill the rest of us in,
please add your summary here. Thank you & sorry for the incomplete
update! Thank you & sorry for the incomplete update!]

From: Paula Shields <pshields@u.washington.edu>

I was waiting for Marnie's recap to see how far she got. Here on the
left coast, we saw all of GL. Here's what the rest of you didn't see.

 --------------
ALAN/TANGIE:
T. lists Alan's similar acts of egotism (the swan pin at Xmas, the Spaulding
interview) and in the middle of her rant, A. kisses her on the lips. She
pulls away and slaps him. Alex, passing by in the hall, sees this. After
the slap, Alan rubs his cheek and says: That was worth it. [eeewww] T.
 runs off.

Alan/Alex continue their squabbles. Alex asks why Alan bailed Buzz out.
Alan: It might prove useful some day. When Alex pouts, Alan professes his
love. "You mean more to me than anything."
Alex: Don't you know you're really all I've got now? [whose fault is that?]
 -----------------
FLETCHER/HOLLY
Another boink, following up on the kiss we saw in their last
scene. _Very_ boring, far-away camera angles, hokey music, shots of
curtains ruffling in open windows. Gag.
H: You made me think I could fall in love again.
 F: Could you?
 H: I already have.
 ---------
ROGINAH
D: I thought we were in the same movie. A Bonnie and Clyde thing...
R: There's nothing exciting about being an accessory to a felony. The
 money's too hot.
D: No, it's not. It's cold cash. [ROTFL! She's sooo unselfconscious.] You
 can't do this to me!!
 R: You're on your own.
 D: What about last night?
R: Last night was last night. This is what's called the morning after.

Roger is at the door w/ his jacket when D. starts to do her thing: "Well,
gosh, if I got caught, I might have to tell them about you..."
 R. comes over to her, takes her chin in his bony <G> hand and says very
sternly, "Don't ever threaten me again."
 ------------
BUZZ/LUCY
 L. is putting on her makeup, shakily. Buzz knocks.
 B. : Not going to work?
 L: Just overslept.
 B. tells her he was arrested, which she already knew from Eleni.
B: As I was being hauled off to jail, I kept thinking about you. You told
me you wanted me to be proud of you. And one day, before I kick, I'd like
you to be proud of me. [this is spoken very quietly and movingly]
At that, L. collapses in tears in B's arms. Buzz at first thinks she's
upset about him being arrested, but he quickly realizes that's not it. He's
very attentive to her and "present," unlike A-M.
B: It's not me, is it? Something else?
 ----------
BRIDGET/FRANK
Frank finally gets relief in the diner and pushes B. into the back kitchen
 to talk.
F: Now, what's this about Lucy?
B: Well, you know she's been a little confused about guys lately?
Frank says he knows she's been torn between Brent/A-M...
B: She's got a bruise on her shoulder.
F: Are you saying somebody hurt her? Are you saying this Brent guy...?

--------
ROGINAH
Dinah apologizes for appearing to threaten R.; she won't do it again, but
she does need his help. Dinah bats her eyelashes at him. They are sitting
on the bed very close to each other.
R: [matter of factly, not meanly] You know, I'll bet that look has gotten
you your way with many a man. [He kisses her on the mouth.] I'd like to
help you; I really would. But you're on your own.
As he starts to leave, they both hear sirens; Dinah pleads again for his
 help.

--------
LUCY/BUZZ
 Buzz: What is it?
L: Nothing, I'm just tired, sick, rundown...
B: Should we call a doctor? [very concerned]
 L: No,I'll be fine.
 Scene ends w/ them hugging.

----------
BRIDGET/FRANK
 Frank: What is going on?
B: I'm not sure, but she has a bruise. And she's been acting funny -- you
 know, confused, out of it.
F: Are you saying that she slept with him?
B: Well, yeah, and I think, that maybe he forced her.
F: [eyes aglow, voice caught in his throat] He's dead.

Paula
