GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 1995

HIGHLIGHTS
* Lucy refuses to see Brent & Jet tries to get her to talk.
* Matt prepares to take a big step with Vanessa.
* Sid agrees to consider Alan's offer.
* Fletch broods.
* Everyone dresses up in complicated clothing.
* A guardian angel comes to the rescue of Buzz & the Fifth Street ball.

FIFTH STREET: Buzz directs the placement of decorations for the ball, then
asks Eleni if anyone has heard from Lucy. No one knows where she is. Buzz
decides to go look for her. AM strides up to Brent & asks him whether
"something happened" between him & Lucy.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy sets the table in the kitchen & makes some lunch. Jet
& David come in & Luce invites them to sit. Jet notes that Lucy has a
bunch of phone messages, but Lucy pays her no mind. Jet starts reeling off
names -- Buzz, Eleni, Frank, AM, Brent... Lucy drops the frying pan. Jet &
David look at her with concern. Lucy asks what they're staring at & says
the accident is no big deal.

LEWIS HOUSE: As they enter the house, Van tells Matt how bad she feels
about Eve & Ed. She tells Matt that Michelle & Bill were lucky to have him
last night. She thinks Matt will make a great daddy. Marah & Shayne run
into the room, laughing. Everyone is excited because Annie is coming to
the house to get ready for the ball. "I'm going to help Annie get
dressed," boasts Marah. "Me too!" Josh chimes in. Shayne has to help Josh
turn into a prince. They run out to help Josh iron his shirt. Matt asks
Van what she meant by her "daddy" comment. He asks if she wants to try,
because it will be a lot easier to turn him into a father than into a
prince. "It just might take a little more than a kiss." Vanessa smiles.

Van tries to back off her offhand comment, but Matt presses. He's
interested, because he always figured kids would be off-limits in their
relationship. Van repeats how impressed she was with Matt's handling of
Bill & Michelle. Before the conversation can go much further, they are
interrupted by Annie's arrival. Marah & Shayne run to greet her. Josh
joins them. Marah leads Annie upstairs & Vanessa joins them. Matt looks
thoughtful.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alex complains to Alan that the maids are never around
when she needs them & always under foot when she doesn't. Alan, dressed in
his fencing outfit, thinks Donna & Ginger sound like a couple of Santa's
reindeer. :-) Alan's in a good mood because he's accompanying his sister
to the 5th St. ball. He compliments her so effusively, I search for a barf
basin. Ginger rushes in & Alex tells her to meet her upstairs to help her
dress. After Alex leaves, Ginger informs Alan, "The eagle has landed."
She's done exactly what he asked. Alan asks whether Ginger is sure Tangie
received his package. Ginger confirms. Alan offers her a large tip on the
end of his epee & she takes it shyly but gleefully. Alan sends her
upstairs to help Alex & make her as happy as she's made him.

JOURNAL: Stu delivers a large package to Tangie. It has no return address.
Fletch suggests calling the bomb squad, but Tangie opens it & finds a
period dress.

Fletch moans over the "love" theme of the 5th St. ball. Nick tells him to
quit whining & asks, "What's love got to do with it?" Fletch does a quick
Tina Turner imitation, then says they have to cover the ball because it's
news, but it doesn't mean he has to like it. But cover it they will, like
a cheap suit. Tangie enters to bitch about her dress, which she thinks is
a symbol of sexism & unprofessional to boot. Fletch says she doesn't have
to wear it. He's thinking about the theme of the Journal's coverage, &
decides it should be "home," not "love." With all the rebuilding from the
ashes, maybe the phoenix should be the symbol, he muses. Tangie complains
about her dress some more, saying Fletch doesn't tell Nick what to wear.
Nick begs to differ; now that he & Fletch are roomies, Fletch picks out
all Nick's clothes :-). Fletch doesn't care what either of them wears, as
long as they get the story. Tangie tells Fletch that the dress is very
beautiful, but she doesn't want to feel that she *has* to wear it. But
maybe she will. It was very thoughtful of him to give it to her. Fletch
isn't really listening (because we know he didn't get her the dress!) &
just nods & waves her away.

Nick encourages Fletch to attend the ball, but Fletch is in no mood. Nick
suggests that Fletch is mooning over Holly. Fletch says it's ancient
history, so Nick suggests that Fletch might meet someone new. Anything
could happen. "Yeah, and my son's going to ace his test tomorrow," replies
Fletch sarcastically. [Doesn't have much faith in Ben's academic
abilities, does he?]

FIFTH ST: Brent tells AM that Lucy's problem is AM himself -- the memos
about interoffice romance, the way he looks at her, whatever he said to
her yesterday. AM says Lucy's been mad at him before, but she's never run
away & hidden. Brent says he feels protective about Lucy, since they're
"kinda tight" now. He requests that AM back off her. AM asks if Brent did
something to set Lucy off. "If I did, do you think she'd be going with me
to the ball tonight?" asks Brent. He excuses himself so he can go buy her
some flowers.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy just wants some privacy. Jet is worried. She asks why
Lucy has changed -- she used to be so chatty & friendly & now she won't
talk to anyone & she's not eating. Buzz enters & is surprised to find Lucy
there. She offers him some lunch. Jet & David leave Lucy with her dad. He
asks her where she's been & says he could have used her help. He's been
worried about her. She apologizes for being "weird." Buzz says he thinks
he knows why she's upset -- it's "the Spaulding brat," right? Buzz told
him to back off. Lucy says nothing. She hugs her dad & says she'd been
feeling "dumb & ugly." Buzz says she shouldn't let AM intimidate her. He
asks her to come down to 5th St., but she declines. He says he'll see her
later at the ball & calls her "Princess" & "Punkin." She asks him to call
her "just plain Lucy." He asks if she's sure she's OK. She insists she's
fine. Buzz says he's not OK; he could use her help fighting Cutter about
the permits. Lucy declines again. Buzz says he's proud of her no matter
what, & leaves. Lucy shudders & fights back tears.

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan swears Donna to secrecy, then sends her off with
Ginger, who has just shown Sid in. Alan is enthusiastic about Sid coming
to work for him. Sid declines the offer. He has other plans. "Gilly?" asks
Alan. Sid nods. Alan admires Sid's decision, even though he doesn't like
it. "Why does it have to be me?" asks Sid. "Because you're the hero,"
answers Alan. No one trusts Alan. No one will accept his assistance. "But
you walk on water," he tells Sid. He wants to do something important &
real to help his fellow man. He's on a mission, with or without Sid. "I
want redemption."

Sid suggests that others besides him want to rebuild Springfield. Alan
says only Sid knows how. Alan doesn't believe in handouts; he believes in
helping people help themselves. He believes in interest-free loans. Sid
says he'll think about it. Alan is delighted.

FIFTH ST: Frank tries to loosen a frozen wrench & makes cracks about AM's
motivation in helping out. AM lets it slide, & loosens the wrench for
Frank in the bargain (with the help of a little WD-40). AM asks Frank
whether he thinks people can change, specifically him. Frank lists AM's
attributes & advantages & likens him to a swimmer who shaves off all his
body hair before a race so one stray hair won't slow him down. [Frankly, I
didn't get this analogy...] AM is worrying over something Lucy said --
that he was a typical Spaulding. Frank thinks this is accurate. Frank
tells AM about how he got the money to go to Crete after Eleni, and that
he knows the person who set it up was AM. And that if it was AM, Frank
owes him a thank you, and that if it was him, AM proved his theory --
people can change. "You're smarter than you look," AM tells Frank.

Levy & Buzz argue about whether the ball can go forward without the proper
permits. He explains that without the permits, there won't be police for
crowd control or firemen & paramedics standing by in case of emergency.
Buzz asks how much the permits cost & Levy gets angry that Buzz is trying
to bribe him. Tangie watches from a distance. Buzz rants & Levy says it's
nothing personal. The Chief said to call it off & if he doesn't, Levy will
arrest him. Levy leaves & Tangie asks if Buzz will call it off. Buzz says
they can put him in jail as long as they do it tomorrow. He asks "Lois" if
she has any suggestions, or a reporter friend who can leap tall buildings
in a single bound. Tangie gets a gleam in her eye.

LEWIS HOUSE: Marah shares makeup tips with Annie while they get ready.
(Did you know your blush color should match the color of the inside of
your lip?) Since Annie & Josh are going as a prince & princess, Marah asks
if that means they will get married. On the other side of the door, about
to knock, Josh hears this & sticks himself with a pin, exclaiming loudly.
Annie hears him. Annie explains that it's all pretend.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Matt comes into the kitchen all duded up & Jet is impressed
that he's ready so early. "The question is, am I ready to propose to
Vanessa," Matt says. Jet is surprised, but happy. She wishes him all the
happiness in the world. "But..." prompts Matt. Jet says there's no but;
they're a great couple. She can see how much they love each other & isn't
about to stand in they're way. She thinks Van will say yes. She asks Matt
if he has a ring. He doesn't & Jet says he needs one. She pulls out her
grandmother's engagement ring & gives it to Matt. He gives her a big hug.

Jet answers the door & it's Brent, dressed in turn-of-the-century banker's
garb. He asks if Lucy's ready. Jet doesn't think so & goes to check. He
asks her to take Lucy's corsage up to her.

Upstairs, Lucy sits in her bathrobe with we hair, staring at the dress
Brent gave her. A cheery Jet knocks, announces herself, & comes on in. She
tells Lucy that she has a "gentleman caller" -- Brent & hands her the
flowers. "I don't want them!" shouts Lucy, & knocks the box out of Jet's
hand. Lucy apologizes & says she's not mad at Jet. Jet asks if Lucy
doesn't want to the ball. Bingo. Jet offers to tell Brent -- but what
should she say? "Tell him I'm sick, or I moved, or I died," says Lucy. Jet
can see that something's wrong between L & B, so she suggests Lucy go down
& talk to him herself. "NO! I don't want to see him again!" Lucy says
loudly. She looks at herself in the mirror. "Or anything he's ever
touched," she adds quietly. She goes into the bathroom & tells Jet to
"just get rid of him!"

Down in the kitchen, Brent says he's disappointed, & asks Jet to tell Lucy
he hopes she feels better. He leaves. Matt & Lucy agree that it's weird.
Jet decides to go find out what's up with Lucy & tells Matt to have her
date meet her at the ball.

FIFTH ST: Eleni tells Buzz how proud everyone is of all the work he's
done. Buzz worries about Lucy. "Why would she think I'm not proud of her?"
Eleni is worried too. Was Lucy OK when Buzz saw her. "She said she was,
but she's not," Buzz answers. Eleni thinks they should give Lucy some
space. Buzz thinks it's AM & maybe Brent will be better for her.

SPAULDING MANSION: The maids fall all over themselves complimenting Alex's
costume:
D: You look like a Russian czarina!
	G: God bless you!
	D: Thank you.
G: You look like Hello Dolly!
D: No, more like Salvador Dali!
G: An artist should paint you!
D: Better yet, I'll get my camera.
ROTFL!

Alex, who is indeed dressed much like Barbra Streisand in Hello Dolly,
asks for some time alone with Alan & the maids exit. Alex tells Alan that
all of her distrust & resentment of him is gone. Maybe we've outgrown it,
she says. Alan thinks it's about time. He also feels a sense of calm &
goodwill between them. He's looking forward to the future. They agree that
family comes first. Alan hands Alex her hat & escorts her to her
"carriage."

JOURNAL: Nick asks if Tangie will be wearing the dress she's been
complaining about. He doesn't care one way or the other, but he needs to
know how to spot her in the crowd. Tangie asks what Nick will wear -- he
says he'll wear a "standard male monkey suit." Tangie thinks it's a very
original idea, not. Fletch comes out to nag them about getting going.
Tangie takes the dress box & the two reporters exit.

Alone at his desk, Fletch grouses, "Lunatics, lovers & poets are all the
same. They invent what they see. So love is madness, wrote the Bard, and I
agree!"

LEWIS HOUSE: Marah brings Annie downstairs. Shayne asks if they're going
to get married & Marah tells him he's being silly -- they're not really in
love. Josh explains that they're going to a party, not a wedding. "And as
for this love business, Annie & I like each other very much. We're special
friends." Annie hopes she can be friends with the kids too. Josh & Annie
head out, meeting Matt at the door.

Matt stops at a mirror to check his tie. He pulls out the ring & looks at
it. Upstairs, Van puts on perfume from a crystal stopper & smiles.

BOARDINGHOUSE: Lucy comes down to the kitchen & is startled to see Bridget
there. Jet tells her to relax; Brent is gone. Lucy says Jet should get
going to the ball, but Jet says they have to talk about what happened to
Lucy. "Nothing happened," Lucy insists. "Why don't you start with, `It
happened the night I went to Brent's apartment.'" Lucy doesn't want to
talk about it; she wants everyone to lay off. Jet says she's not everyone;
she's Lucy's closest friend & she needs to talk about it. "I don't want to
talk about it," Lucy insists.

FIFTH ST: Buzz groans when he sees the cops coming. Levy has a judicial
order to shut things down. Buzz refuses to cooperate. Levy is just trying
to do his job. Cutter rushes in, in costume, & says it's all a mistake.
Cutter says it was a computer error & all the permits are in order. Levy
wants proof. Cutter produces the "alleged permit." Levy says that's fine,
but there are no personnel to handle the crowd. Cutter's got it covered --
he brought along a bunch of off-duty cops who have volunteered their
services. He invites Levy to join them & Levy agrees. Buzz gives Cutter a
hug & a kiss. Cutter tells Buzz to thank his "guardian angel" & points out
Tangie, who has just arrived, wearing a beautifully detailed ecru gown.
Buzz looks at her & his jaw drops. Close-up on Tangie, hair up & pearls at
her ears, as the screen fades to black.

-------------------------------------

I hate to say it folks, but it certainly looks like they're setting up a
Buzz/Tangie romance.
