GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE -- THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1998

                        CLONE, SWEET CLONE

* Harley proves she's no shrinking Beth when she meets Carl.
* Cassie labels the clone a bimbo & bawls to Billy in frustration.
* The clone demands answers & Josh decides it's time to be honest.
* Reva wanders around her island talking to herself.

CEDARS: Phillip, having learned that Carl is in Springfield, vows to Beth
that he will find the man & make sure he pays for what he did to her. Beth
tells Phillip to stay out of it. Phillip says he'll call the police. Beth
doesn't want to antagonize Carl, but Lillian is on Phillip's side. Beth
insists that if they put Carl in jail for a few months, he'll be out for
blood when he gets out & none of them will be safe. Phillip insists that
they will all be safe. Beth says Carl is going to go after Harley. Phillip
asks why. Beth starts to say that it's her fault, but Lillian interrupts &
says it's because Harley started the whole investigation that flushed him
out. Phillip runs out, intent on finding Harley right away. Beth says she's
coming with him & brushes Lillian off when she tries to stop her.

ALLEY BEHIND THE DINER: Harley is stunned to learn that she is face-to-face
with Carl. "Seek & ye shall find," he replies. He knows she's been snooping
around, looking for him & asking a lot of unflattering questions. She
starts to say that she thought he was dead, but he cuts in: "This isn't
what dead looks like." Carl says he's very much alive & not happy. Carl has
her backed up against a wall, but Harley slips out, showing she's not
intimidated. Carl doesn't like the stories he's been hearing about him
beating women, so he's come to cut them off at the source.

LEWIS OIL: Josh & Billy are working in his office on contracts and Cassie
is out by the reception desk. The clone arrives & greets Cassie by name.
Cassie doesn't recognize the clone & asks if they know each other. The
clone says they met at the park. Cassie doesn't remember, but the clone
tells her not to worry about it; she looked totally different then. The
clone says she wants to see Josh & Cassie thinks she's "Josh's bimbo." The
clone wants to know what "bimbo" means. Cassie gets all outraged because
she knows Josh bought the girl a ton of clothes. The girl doesn't see what
the problem is. Cassie says Josh is a married man with 2 kids. The clone
knows this. She thinks Marah's a pain though. Cassie can't imagine what's
wrong with Josh that he would expose his kids to this girl. The clone says
she likes Josh. She may even love him. Cassie realizes this is no sweet
young thing being led astray by Josh. The clone agrees. Cassie says she
knows just what kind of a person the clone is. The clone goes nose-go-nose
with her & wants to know exactly what Cassie thinks.

In Josh's office, Billy says he doesn't believe that Josh has someone on
the side. He's also sure there's a good explanation for what's been going
on & eventually Josh will get around to wanting to talk about it. Billy
says it's not easy to deal with Reva not being there. Josh says he misses
her more than Billy can know. The phone rings & Billy takes the call.

Out at reception, Cassie pushes the clone toward the elevator, outraged
that she would flaunt herself this way. The clone is ready for a fight, but
Cassie can't even believe she's having this conversation. The clone doesn't
want to leave & they start arguing loudly enough for Josh to hear them. He
goes out to reception just as Cassie is pushing the clone into the
elevator. Josh joins the clone in the elevator & tells Cassie they have to
go. The door closes in Cassie's face. Billy comes out to see what's going
on & Cassie says the girl was just here & they have to go after her & Josh.

NO REVA IS AN ISLAND: Reva collects coconuts & talks to herself. She goes
on about the stars & not being able to tell one from another the way Josh
can. She was always too busy thinking about how sexy he was. She misses him
so much. If he could only see her now, he'd laugh at her attempts to build
a shelter, but at least she's got something to keep the rain out. She
remembers when Marah wanted to build a treehouse at Cross Creek. Reva
wanted to build it & Josh said she was nuts, but she built it out of all
the wood they had chopped for the next winter. She can do things if she
sets her mind to it. It might not be as good as what Josh would build, but
it will do. It will keep her dry & safe as long as it takes for her to find
a way off the island & back home to him.

ALLEY: Harley says she's just trying to find out the truth. She'd like to
know what really happened between Beth & Carl from his point of view. Carl
wonders if he'll believe her. She asks if there's any reason she shouldn't.
Carl says Beth has never been able to get over her ex, which Harley should
know. Harley asks why she would know that. Carl thinks Harley is doing all
this because of Phillip, "the man who reels `em in like senseless fish."
Harley asks where Carl got an idea like that. Beth told him. Harley is
surprised to learn that he's spoken to Beth & she knows he's in town. Carl
says Beth is the one who told him that Harley was the one nosing around &
stirring up trouble. Carl sees that this gets a reaction out of Harley, but
she just says she's surprised.

Carl says he was in love with Beth & he put everything on the line for her,
but she didn't appreciate it. She couldn't get over Phillip. He put up with
a lot from her because he was crazy about her. After they split up, he was
a wreck & he eventually left town. "And disappeared off the face of the
earth?" asks Harley. Carl says he wanted to, until these rumors started.
What rumors, Harley wants to know. All the talk about him abusing Beth was
just made up by Beth to get Phillip to feel sorry for her, Carl says.
Harley acts like she's buying Carl's story. She can believe this of Beth.
Carl says Harley & he are really after the same thing. Maybe, she allows.
But she wonders why Carl wants Beth back. Carl is sure that if he could get
her away from Springfield he could straighten her out. He's sure she feels
the same way about Phillip.

Harley gets that Carl is implying that if he wins Beth back, the path is
clear for her & Phillip. But how does he intend to get Beth back? Carl says
he's going to show Beth how much he loves her. "That you're the only one
for her." Carl agrees. "That you're the right guy." Carl says yes. "That
you'll never hit her again." That's right, says Carl, then catches himself,
but it's too late; Harley's got him. She shakes her finger at him & says
she wouldn't help him if her life depended on it. She calls him a "lying
sack of garbage" & turns her back on him. Carl grabs her arm & says he
thought she wanted Phillip. She does, but not enough to help a scum-sucking
woman abuser like Carl.

MICHAEL'S APARTMENT BUILDING: Josh drags the clone down the hall by her
hand & asks how she got out in the first place. He calls out to Michael &
knocks on the door. He tries the handle & the door opens. They go inside as
he continues to ask her questions without giving her a chance to answer.
Why did she go to Lewis Oil? Who invited her? She asks why he's so mad at
her & why he's so ashamed of her. Michael starts shouting & Josh realizes
he's locked in the clone's room. Josh demands the key from her, but she
won't give it up. She wants him to ask her nicely. He asks nicely & she
gives it to him. Josh lets Michael out.

Michael sits on the couch where the clone is stretched out with a fashion
magazine & gives her hell for locking him up like a prisoner after all the
things he & Josh have done for her. She points out that it's no more than
the way he's been keeping her locked up in the apartment, never letting her
out to breathe. Josh says they're just trying to do what's best for her.
She thinks they're lying to her. She says she's scared. She knows there's
something wrong with her. Cassie didn't recognize her from the park the
other day. Cassie looks exactly the same & she looks so different, older, &
she knows it has something to do with the stuff Michael makes her take.
Michael says it's medicine & it's good for her. She asks again what's wrong
with her. Michael says she's too young to understand, & he'll explain it
when she's older. "Tell her," says Josh. "She has a right to know."

LEWIS OIL: Billy tells Cassie to calm down. Cassie refuses. She thinks Josh
is going through a mid-life crisis. Men always go for the same kind. Billy
should have seen her; she had the same eyes as Reva. They go into Josh's
office & Cassie keeps fuming. She agonizes over what Reva must be going
though. Billy says Josh swore that he wasn't having an affair. Cassie
thinks Billy is just backing up Josh because he's a man & because they're
brothers. Billy denies this. He knows Josh wouldn't throw away everything
he has with Reva after he just got it back. There must be another
explanation. Cassie wants to know where Reva is. Billy says she's probably
in Florida, just like Josh said. Billy is sure that Reva did not just up &
leave. She'd have to be six feet under or on a desert island for Josh to
take up with someone else. If he knows one thing, it's this: you do not
screw with Reva Shayne.

ISLAND: Reva keeps talking to herself inanely as she builds some kind of
spear. She yells to the fish to look out because she's coming for them. She
heads into the water with her spear & calls to the fish. Off in the
distance, she sees a ship & yells to it, but it's way too far off to notice
her. She starts stabbing into the water with her spear.

ALLEY: Harley says she's known guys like Carl her whole life. They talk
smooth & act loving until they think their woman has stepped out of line &
then they treat her worse than a dog. Carl says he's never had a dog.
"Lucky for the dog," replies Harley. Carl says she thinks she knows it all.
No, but she knows enough to put him away for a long time. Carl laughs, then
kicks the dumpster. How can a woman like her think she can take on a man
like him. Harley says she knows what he did & she's going to make him pay.
Carl says she knows nothing. He never touched Beth. Harley laughs.

Carl says even if did hit Beth, does Harley think she would testify? Harley
thinks yes, if she had some support. Carl is sure she wouldn't. Beth is
afraid of her own bathwater. But Harley can do as she pleases. It won't get
her anywhere. But if she should happen to get hurt... Harley grabs Carl by
the neck & tells him not to threaten her. He will leave her alone, or she
will kill him. She pushes him away just as Phillip arrives in the diner
looking for her. Carl looks scared, whether of Harley or Phillip I'm not
sure. He warns her not to track him down, then beats it. Harley pulls a
wallet out from behind her apron, looks at it, then stuffs it back again.

Phillip & Beth come out into the alley. Beth gives Harley an inquiring look
while Phillip looks around. Phillip returns & asks if Harley is OK. She
says yes. He tells Harley that Carl is in town & thinks Harley is the cause
of all his problems. Harley asks where he got an idea like that. Phillip
doesn't know, but he intends to find Carl & put a stop to this before it
goes any further. Phillip asks what Harley is doing in the alley. She says
she was talking to some neighborhood kids who were causing trouble. Phillip
doesn't see anybody. Harley says they're gone.

LEWIS OIL: Cassie says it makes no sense to her. Billy says maybe it's not
supposed to. When Josh is ready to tell them what's going on, he will.
Cassie just wants to talk to Reva & hear that she's OK & find out why she
left without telling anyone. Billy says sometimes Reva does crazy things &
they just have to accept that. Cassie knows she's acting like a madwoman.
Billy hugs her & says she's definitely Reva's sister. Cassie figures she
owes apologies to a lot of people, starting with Michael. Billy goes to get
coffee. Cassie sighs & wipes her eyes, then picks up the phone.

MICHAEL'S APT: The clone wants to know what's going on. Michael says
they'll tell her just as soon as they have a chance to talk. The clone goes
into her room as the phone rings. It's Cassie. She says she knows she's
been a little unreasonable lately & she's sorry. Michael says she's
forgiven.

The clone goes over to Josh & wants him to tell her the truth. Josh says he
& Michael need to talk first. The clone starts yelling that she's not going
into the bedroom until she knows what's going on.

Michael tells Cassie he'll call her back later.

LEWIS OIL: Billy returns with the coffee & Cassie says she has to run. She
apologizes & rushes out.

MICHAEL'S APT: The clone agrees to give Michael & Josh 5 minutes, & goes
into her room. Michael says now they have to make something up. No, says
Josh. Michael says they can't tell her the truth, not now anyway. Josh says
they have to. She has too many questions that aren't being answered. She's
terrified. Michael says she won't be once she grows up. Josh says they
can't force-feed her the medicine & keep her locked in her room until she's
the right age. Michael says there has to be a way to do this right &
preserve the experiment. Josh says it's not an experiment anymore. This is
a young girl's life. They've been playing god & she needs answers. Michael
asks what Josh is going to tell her. Josh isn't sure, but he has to give
her something to hold onto, & he needs to do it without Michael. Michael
says it's a mistake & it will backfire, but he agrees & leaves.

Josh knocks on the clone's door & she comes out. Josh is sorry she's scared
& says he never wanted to hurt her. She's very special. She's upset & knows
there's something wrong with her. There are important things she doesn't
remember. She has all these pictures of people she's related to, but she
doesn't remember any of them. She has pictures of herself at all different
ages, but she doesn't remember them being taken. She never had the clothes
she's wearing in the pictures & she never wore her hair that way. She wants
to know who she is & who the girl in the pictures is. Why is she growing up
so fast? How did she get here? What's wrong with her? She cries against
Josh's chest. He says he'll tell her everything she wants to know.

Josh gets a couple of cans of soda from the fridge sits down at the dinette
table with the clone. He says there was a woman in his life named Reva & he
loved her more than anything. She was his wife & the mother of his kids &
she made a promise that she would never go away. But there was a plane
crash. They had a very special love. They became like one many years ago
when they were 4 or 5 years old. She was part of his soul. They were
inseparable. He couldn't imagine life without her & still can't. The clone
doesn't understand what this has to do with her.

Josh says Michael has been doing medical research. He figured out a way to
keep Reva alive in her. The clone asks if they're talking about some kind
of a transplant. Josh says no. What Michael's doing has never been done
before & that's why he's monitoring her so closely. The clone asks if it's
a brain transplant. Josh says it's nothing like that. The most important
thing in all of this is her. They got so caught up in the science that they
didn't take care of her. He wants so much for her to be happy. She's a
wonderful gift & she's going to have a wonderful life when all this is
over. The clone doesn't understand at all. She stands up & runs her fingers
through her hair in frustration. Suddenly she says, "Oh my god! I know what
you did to keep your precious wife alive." She's distraught & horrified.

ALLEY: Phillip tells Harley about Carl showing up at Cedars. Harley can't
imagine how terrifying that must have been for Beth. And now he's after
her? She thanks Phillip for the warning. He tells Harley he knew she was
going to flush Carl out & this was why he was so worried. Harley apologizes
to Beth for accusing her of killing Carl. Beth says it's OK. Harley says
she should know better than to let her personal feelings get involved.
Phillip says the important thing now is to find Carl, & since they don't
know where he is, the best thing to do is to call the police. Beth protests
that if they leave Carl alone, he'll go away. Phillip says Carl won't go
away unless they send him away.

They go back inside. Phillip wants to keep his women safe, so he's going to
call a cab for Beth & he wants Harley to stay at the diner, so she won't be
alone. He's going down to the police station to talk to Frank. Harley
suggests that Phillip leave now & she will call the cab for Beth. [Excuse
me, but is Beth so helpless now that she's incapable of calling her own
cab?] Phillip agrees & tells them to be careful.

After Phillip leaves, Beth asks Harley if Carl was there before. Harley
shakes Beth & says he sure was. "And it's no wonder you don't look
surprised. You set me up!"

They walk back out into the alley & Beth says she was scared out of her
mind when Carl showed up. He was threatening her & Lizzie. She was just
trying to divert his attention. "To focus it on me?!" yells Harley. Beth
doesn't know what to say. She was planning to warn Harley. Harley asks if
she was waiting until he beat the crap out of her. Beth turns it back on
Harley, accusing her of lying to Phillip just now when she said Carl wasn't
there. She could have sent Phillip after him. Harley says Carl is sick, but
he's smart. Beth's testimony alone won't be enough to put him away.

Beth says Harley needs to leave this situation alone. She's sorry she got
Harley in the middle of it. Harley doesn't want Beth's apology. She wants
her help. They're going to put him away. Beth refuses. Harley says she has
no choice. Harley's being threatened & Beth is going to help her as well as
herself. Beth refuses again. Besides, Carl will be gone before they can
track him down. Harley says he won't get very far & pulls out Carl's
wallet. She flips through it & finds credit cards, a driver's license...
Beth says it's not a game. Why does Harley want Carl to come back?

Harley says the only way to put Carl away for good is to build a very
strong case against him. They are going to bait him into telling them
everything he did. Beth asks how she plans to do that. "Easy," says Harley.
"We just use you as the bait."

ISLAND: Reva makes her way through the darkened jungle and to the shore.
Tearfully, she recalls how she & Josh used to fantasize about finding their
own deserted isle paradise. Well, she's here, but he's not. She splashes
some water on herself, looks around & then laughs, realizing there's no one
to see her if she goes swimming in the buff. As she pulls off her shirt, a
man in army greens walks through the jungle behind her. She turns around,
holding her shirt to her chest.

MICHAEL'S APT: The clone runs out of her room with a newspaper, ranting
incoherently about sperm banks & adoptions & things that are "sick, twisted
& evil." She says Josh & Michael are making her a freak. She's not even a
human being. Josh protests that she is a human being & she just doesn't
understand, but she says she knows she's the clone of his dead wife &
they're making her grow up fast so she'll look exactly like Reva. She cries
& pounds Josh's chest.

Outside, Cassie stalks down the hallway & stares at the numbers on
Michael's door as the screen fades to black.
