Blake at Marler's wearing a strange plaid skirt:

She picks up Dinah's clothes. Ross comes in and tells her that she
shouldn't do that. Dinah can learn to pick up after herself. "I can live
with that," says a relieved Blake. Ross says that Dinah really is a good
girl. There is a knock on the door, and they both assume it is the prodigal
daughter. No luck, it's just Ed and Eve come by for dinner. Oops. The
Marler's have no idea what they are talking about.

Alan-Michael and Tangie at the Journal:

Alan-Michael wonders where everyone is. Fletcher quit, Tangie says.
So did Nick. And Holly is gone.

Holly and Fletcher at Fletcher's:

Holly has decided to quit. Fletcher isn't buying this. Nick already
did this routine. He starts to walk out on her and she tells him to stop.
"I'm not through with you yet."

The Marler household:

The happy couple tries to cover up. They are just running a little
behind. They've been looking forward to this all week. "You two are terrible
liars," Ed avers. They confess, but beg them to stay anyway. A night with
friends is just what they need. Ed and Eve agree and Ed suggests that the
guys do the cooking. They leave, and Eve and Blake sit down together, nervously.
Eve asks about Dinah. "She's something," Blake says. Then she gets down to
it. "Actually, she's a selfish little brat." Eve seeing into Ross's head knows
that he can't see any evil in his flesh. So true, Blake agrees. She thinks
Dinah is dangerous. She doesn't doubt that she loves her father, but she
thinks Dinah has come for money and will tear down their house to get it
[doesn't sound too much like love to me]. Eve wonders what Blake is going
to do. Blake says she kicked her out, but Ross made her agree that she could
stay. Blake does understand Ross's feelings, but she's worried.

Alan-Michael and Tangie:

Their conversation turns personal as Alan-Michael yells at Tangie
for her article again. A reporter comes up to Tangie looking for an editor
and Alan-Michael grabs her story. He thinks he has learned enough by osmosis
to edit it. "You've got quite a big ego," Tangie observes. "It's hereditary."
But he quickly tires of editing, and leaves. Tangie follows him.

Fletcher and Holly:

Fletcher says that he isn't angry with her. "I'm happy. I have my
home and my boy."
"Where is he?"
"I don't know. He's a teenager."

Holly notices the surroundings, the tv on a game show, the junk food,
etc. She thinks that the novel is going that well. In fact, she suspects
he's thinking about the Journal. What makes her think that, Fletcher asks.
Nick suggested it. Just then, in walk Nick, Ben, and Bill. Nick wants to
walk right back out, but Fletcher won't let them. Ben thinks this should be
good.

Buzz at the dumpster:

He has a fight with some pages from a newspaper. Should he toss them
or not? Finally he goes to them. It's the personals. The first one he reads
in a non-smoking single female looking for a medical doctor with large
inheritance. "Aren't we all?" He looks at a few more, and wonders if anyone
is looking for a "short, fat, middle-aging" man. Lucy comes outside and
watches him for awhile. Then she asks him what he is doing.

Nadine and Carroll out bowling:

It's a double date. Nadine supplied the woman, Carroll the man.
The woman calls Carroll, Nadine's new man. The other couple can't keep
their hands off each other. Carroll and Nadine suffer. They decide to kick
their butts in the forum of bowling.

Fletcher, et. al.:

Holly quizzes Ben. She asks him what his father has been doing and
how he has been feeling. Bill recommends that he take the 5th. Ben says
nothing. "At least he can keep his mouth shut," Fletcher says with a steely
stare at Nick. Alan-Michael comes in, followed by Tangie. "A clandestine
meeting of the Journal staff."

They all argue about who has quit. Is it Fletcher or Holly or Nick?
Alan-Michael admits with the negative press about him, it is tempting to
let the Journal fall apart, but he can't stand by. He insists that no one
leave until this is all sorted out. The accusations and defenses fly. Fletch
says it's not his problem, no one can stop him from quitting. Nick says
the same. Etc. Alan-Michael starts yelling. Nick asks Fletcher that if Holly
didn't work at the Journal, would he quit? He says that he is writing his
novel (while biting his lip, hard). What's it about, asks Ms. Lindsay.
Lots of things. No, it's not a love story. It's about a man who gets fed up
and murders everyone in his kitchen. Tangie starts to tell Alan-Michael what
all this is about, when Fletcher grabs Holly and runs for the door.

Blake, et. al.:

They eat their tuna melts on tv trays, each on their own couch or chair.
Blake ask about the wedding date, and discovers they still haven't set one.
Eve says she is waiting for a medical conference. Then, Eve flinches in pain
for a second. She gets up and leaves. Blake follows her.

Blake finds Eve sitting in a chair, rocking herself. What's wrong?
Eve says she is just queasy. The tuna melts? Uh-uh, there is no way she was
going to touch one of those things. She thinks she may be pregnant. She has
all the symptoms. She has been using birth control, but maybe she is one
of the 2/10th of 1% who does anyway. Please, don't tell Ed, she pleads.
Blake wishes them all the happiness and allows for how much she respects
and admires Eve (preambled by "I never thought I'd say this...") [which is
confusing to me. I don't recall the Blake/Eve animosity. When was it?]
Eve is pleased. She never thought she would be accepted and now all is so
wonderful. She doesn't want anything to spoil it.

Ross and Ed discuss the future. Ross is looking forward to the time
when Ed introduces his young wife and gets all the raised eyebrows. "They
don't really do that, do they?" "What? All the time." Eve returns and Ed
realizes that she isn't really okay. She says she is just tired, and could
they go? They get ready to leave and Eve and Blake share a look. Good night.
Blake says she is ready for bed, but Ross plans to do a little cleaning.

Nadine and Carroll:

Nadine gets her third strike in a row. They are killing their opponents.
Only, their opponents don't know it, they are so busy. We discover that they
are on their first date, as the two of them make lame excuses about sprained
fingers and headaches so that they can depart. Nadine and Carroll look
dumbfounded. The couple goes, and Carroll says that actually, around Nadine
he feels just like them, but he thinks they should go slower. Nadine agrees.
"Good things take time."

Buzz and Lucy:

He says he was just looking. He's discovered the whole thing is just
a bunch of weirdos and crackpots. Lucy agrees and says that "it is okay
to be alone, and okay to do something about it". Buzz thinks there are other
options. Such as? Lucy knows them all. Lucy recalls a time when Buzz had a
woman in every little town. But now he has made his peace with Nadine and
flings are not enough anymore. She tells him to be more patient. He wonders
how she got so smart and they do a little bonding. They decide to hang out,
and just then Brent [Brett?] joins them with a few tickets to some great
show. He tries to pull her along in his joy, but she hems and haws. Buzz
tells him to let her decide for herself, and Brent gets control of himself.
He apologizes. He realizes that they were having a serious, private conversation
and he let his excitement get away with him. Sorry, sir. Apology accepted,
Lucy says. Buzz encourages her to go, if she wants. She does. Buzz mumbles
to himself.

Alan-Michael and Tangie and Nick:

Alan-Michael screams about "No Inter-office Romance!" Again and
again. Nick and Tangie giggle. What about Lucy? [Well, I guess that is
death to A-M and Tangie. She can just tease him about his new/old love
interest?] Just friends, he says. That's how Holly and Fletcher started.
[Hmm. I don't remember it that way.] Maybe they should realize that sometimes
you just can't work it out, Alan-Michael decides. Like with Nick and Mindy.
Tangie is shocked at Alan-Michael's tactlessness. Nick agrees with his
cousin. Sometimes there is no hope. Especially when another person is involved
says Alan-Michael looking at Blondie. Nick agrees; Roger will keep Fletcher
and Holly from happiness.

Fletcher and Holly at the Journal:

Fletcher reminds Holly of all the people depending on her and the
Journal. She says it's not just about them. It's about the 15 minutes that
changed everything. [15 minutes? Here they have a couple of imaginary
characters and that's the best they can do?] It was no "slam bam, thank
you, Mister", she claims. Stew comes in with a headline question and Fletcher
answers without turning around. He admits that they made love. That's why
he has to leave; it was more than just a fling. No, Holly disagrees. That's
why she has to leave. Fletcher, once more, answers a question of Stew's and
he goes. Fletcher tells Holly this is her chance to figure out where to
go after Roger. She needs the support of her job. Holly appreciates that,
but she just can't accept it.

Buzz:

He is back to reading the personals that he has pulled out of the
dumpster. "Just a bunch of lonely, pathetic people," he says. He crumples it
up and tosses it away.

Nadine:

She bowls another strike and jumps into Carroll's arms. They kiss
a light kiss. And then a more serious kiss. Then they just look at each other.

Ed and Eve in their bedroom:

Eve lies on the bed, and Ed sits in a rocking chair. He is thinking
about the wedding. He wants to elope. When? This week. She looks thrilled.

Ross and Blake in bed:

Blake pretends to read. Are you angry at me for wanting Dinah to stay,
Ross asks. No. Are you angry at me for wanting Dinah to leave. No, I understand,
but she is a permanent part of our life now, he says. Blake hopes Dinah
knows the same is true of her. Ross goes to check on the cat. He comes back,
and with no provocation, repeats that he is not angry at all. Blake turns
and looks miserable.

Fletcher and Holly:

Fletcher continues to reflex edit. Do you hear yourself, Holly asks.
They are just easy answers for "Stew questions", he claims. No, it is an
incredible talent and the Journal needs it. Holly can put out the paper, but
without him it is missing the passion and cohesion. He has to stay. She
will survive without Roger or the paper. Fletcher is speechless. She starts
to leave, and he says it was a lousy novel anyway. They hug. They walk out
together as Nick, Tangie, and Alan-Michael come in. Fletcher grabs some
papers and gets to work.
