GUIDING LIGHT TGIF UPDATE -- FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 1995

HIGHLIGHTS
* Gilly heads to LA with a proper send-off
* AM is still on the rag; is it Lucy or Alan or both?
* Josh quits; Van thinks he's nuts; Matt helps her see the light
* Blake forces Ross to confront Dinah; Dinah plays it like a pro

WSPR: Gilly gives some last-minute instructions to an assistant as she
rushes out the door on her way to the airport for her audition in LA. The
assistant expresses her admiration for Gilly; Gilly expresses her doubts
about leaving her hometown. She asks the assistant if she's had any luck
getting through to Sid. Nope; still no answer.

SID'S OFFICE: Sid calls the cab company and cancels Gilly's cab.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: Lucy chats with Nadine about her date, wondering
why it "fizzled." Not even a good night kiss. She gets the feeling the guy
was just being nice to her, & doesn't think he'll ask her out again. AM
overhears the conversation & looks rather self-satisfied. As she hangs up,
Brent arrives with an armload of flowers, to thank her for their date.

LEWIS OIL: Josh meets with Vanessa. She's been hearing bad things from the
stockholders since he walked out on their lunch. Josh explains that if he
had stayed, he'd have shoved Forsythe's sorbet up his nose. He admits he
was being self-indulgent & says he's quitting. Van freaks. She doesn't
want to run the company alone. Matt walks into the outer office & hears
the shouting. He exchanges a look with Wanda & decides to wait outside.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Blake enters the living room as Ross, in a flowered apron,
is putting a big breakfast on the table. He made it for Dinah. Blake notes
evenly that Dinah barely eats, except for cake at 4 AM. Ross says she'll
damn well eat this, after he zested lemons & all. Dinah emerges & squeals
over breakfast. Of course, she's just starved. Blake blinks & just manages
to avoid rolling her eyes.

WSPR: Gilly forgot her laptop. The assistant runs upstairs to get it. Dr.
Grant arrives, happy to catch Gilly before she left. He wishes her good
luck & says he & Vivian are both behind her 100%. Gilly is surprised after
the way Viv acted when Gilly first mentioned the idea. Dr. Grant says
Vivian just wants what's best for her daughter. Gilly wonders why her mom
thinks she knows better than Gilly what's best. "It's like she & Sid are
living in the `50s." Charles is surprised; he thought Sid was all for
Gilly's career goals. Gilly tells about her fight with Sid. Charles says
she shouldn't leave without speaking to Sid. Gilly wonders why it's always
her job to patch things up. "Why do I always have to choose between love
and career?" She says her dad has a double standard. Charles backs down,
saying he just wants Gilly to be the best she can be & he knows she'll
work things out.

SPAULDING: AM comes out to get Brent & get some scheduling info from Lucy.
Brent comments how it's a crime that someone so beautiful is also
efficient. [Is this the 1st sign that this guy's a total MCP?] The men go
into AM's office. Brent asks AM if there's been any negative fallout from
Tangie's article. AM says it's a dead issue. Brent says that Alan was
around yesterday, pumping people for information. He told him some stuff
about the Sylvan deal. AM is pissed. "What exactly didn't you want me to
tell him?" asks Brent. AM ignores the question & tells Brent to get to
work on the report he owes AM. Brent, also ticked now, promises AM coldly
to get it to him by the end of the day. "I hope you feel better soon," he
tells AM on his way out. AM sighs, picks up the phone & calls his dad.

MANSION: Alex answers & hands the phone to her brother. AM wants to see
his dad ASAP. Alan agrees & hangs up. "Could it be that my enforced
retirement is over?" he asks Alex.

LEWIS OIL: Wanda brings Matt some coffee. Van tells Josh she won't accept
his resignation & he should just write apologetic notes to the stock-
holders. Josh says no. He also says he's not quitting entirely, just
changing lanes. He wants to run Lewis Construction. Van reminds him that
it's defunct. Not anymore, says Josh. He's going to revive it. Van thinks
Josh is out of his mind. It's the biggest money-loser Lewis has ever had.
Dylan could never turn a profit with it. "I'm not Dylan," says Josh
unnecessarily. He promises to show a profit within 6 months & make up the
restart costs within a year. It's what he really wants to do. Vanessa
always does what she wants; why can't he? "Does that pretty nurse you're
seeing have anything to do with this?" she asks. Maybe, maybe not, says
Josh. "Didn't your life change after you met Matt?" She admits it did.

Van asks if it's true he offered Matt a job. Josh confirms this, saying
Matt had already proven himself working for Dylan. Matt & Wanda listen
with interest. Josh adds that it doesn't matter, as Matt turned down the
job anyway. Josh asks why it matters if he decides to do something he
really wants. Van says they're in a major corporation, not a kindergarten;
they can't just quit because they find their jobs tiresome. Josh still
wants to quit. Van insists on 6 months notice. Josh refuses. He reminds
her that she's the one who told him to get a life. He also reminds her how
she used to disappear when she was having her "secret thing" with Matt.
She points out that she didn't just walk away from her job; he says she
might as well have, for all the time she was there. She was right & he
needs to follow his heart. "I WANT TO GET OUT OF A JOB I HATE & I WANT TO
DO WHAT I WANT TO DO & IF I CAN'T HAVE THAT... I have nothing." He walks
out. After a few seconds, Matt walks in.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Dinah butters up Ross by telling him the croissants taste
like they came straight from Montmartre. "You defrosted them perfectly,
Ross," says Blake. Dinah gushes some more over the food. Blake asks
casually how school is going. "Did you get the courses you wanted?" Dinah
nods & says uh-huh. Blake asks what courses she's signed up for. Ross
suggests that she's probably taking French. Dinah agrees, along with
French History, Comp Lit & Linguistics. "But drama is my favorite," she
concludes. "I bet it is," replies Blake. She asks whether Dinah has
confirmed her return flight. Dinah says it's all set. Ross takes some
dishes into the kitchen & Dinah lights up a smoke. She asks Blake to bring
her a muffin. Blake grits her teeth, grabs Dinah's cigarette. stubs it out
& tells to get her own damn muffin.

Dinah glares at Blake, but jumps up & ferries a dish into the kitchen as
Ross enters the room. "She's helping!" Ross says excitedly, then follows
Dinah back to the kitchen. Blake makes a disgusted noise & picks up the
mail. She mutters as she sorts through it, then finds a $900 phone bill &
collars Dinah. Ross asks what's going on. Blake says they're going to
discuss the phone bill with "mademoiselle." Dinah thinks "somebody" got up
on the wrong side of bed. "There's been no right side since you came to
live with us, Dinah," says Blake. Ross says Dinah hasn't done anything.
"I'll tell you what she's done, Ross. She has conned & lied to us every
single minute of every day since she got her & I can prove it." Dinah
looks worried.

Blake says she called the American University in Paris & found out Dinah
is not enrolled. And her airline ticket has no return date. All the $$ he
& Van sent for tuition, Dinah has blown "living the high life in gay
Paree. The girl has more clothes than Donna Karan, which she leaves lying
on the floor for yours truly to pick up. I've had it Ross!" Dinah lights
a cigarette & bites her lip. Ross tells Blake to calm down. Blake doesn't
want to; she's been playing it calm for weeks & is sick of it. "I'm not
going to play parlormaid to this little brat any longer!" She grabs
Dinah's cigarette & puts it out, claiming she will also no longer breathe
second-hand smoke. Ross asks Dinah if it's true she's not in school.

Dinah breaks into [alligator] tears & runs into Ross's arms. She says it's
all true & she's glad Blake snooped in her things & brought all into the
open. She had to leave school because she had a breakdown. Blake rolls her
eyes big-time. Ross swallows the story hook, line & sinker. Dinah says her
French tutor made sexual advances toward her. Ross sits down with Dinah &
throws Blake a withering look. Dinah says it was very complicated because
she fell in love with the guy. "He broke my heart, Daddy!" she cries.
"Just how many broken hearts have you had, Dinah?" asks Blake. Ross gets
annoyed at Blake & when his head is turned, Dinah glares angrily. Dinah
says the tutor was very possessive & she had to spend all her time taking
care of him & neglected her studies completely. When she flunked out, the
guy dumped her. "So yes, I dropped out," she cries, & drops her head.

"You dropped out 2 years ago, Dinah, owing 800 francs back tuition," notes
Blake. "What have you been doing since then?" Ross also wants to know. She
claims she was distraught, she'd never experienced rejection before & she
became ill, in fact, she got pneumonia. The medical bills were tremendous.
"I should have stayed in the hospital longer, but I couldn't afford it."
Blake's not buying one iota of this story. Dinah is really going over-
board. She says if they don't believe her, they can call the hospital.
Blake makes a note of the name. Ross asks why Dinah didn't call when she
was in the hospital. Blake says D didn't want to take advantage of her
parents' generosity. "I didn't call because I wanted to die," retorts
Dinah. "I didn't eat or sleep. I never left my stuffy little garret."
Blake figures Dinah bought all her expensive clothes by mail-order.

Ross tells Blake to shut up. Dinah says she has the truth on her side.
After she got better, she worked in a cafe to pay the rent until she could
decide what to do. "Whether to buy the diamond or the ruby..." Blake
wonders. Dinah admits she's been extravagant, but that Blake is blowing it
out of proportion. Then she goes on the offensive, accusing Blake of
rooting through her things to find something to hurt her. Dinah admits
she's not good with money; she was raised by carnies & never learned how
to budget. [Can you hear the violins playing, folks?] Blake holds up the
phone bill as proof of Dinah's last statement. Ross tells Blake she's made
her point. And so has Dinah. "She's been very forthcoming," Ross thinks.
Blake says au revoir & slams the door on her way out. Dinah cries & says
she's sorry. Ross hugs her & comforts her.

LEWIS OIL: Matt backs up Josh & Van wonders why he's not on her side. She
does her job because it's her responsibility, not because she likes it.
Oops, maybe she does like it a little, she admits. OK, she loves it. But
Josh does too, she says. Matt thinks he knows something about Josh that
Van doesn't. He asks her to come with him to see something.

WSPR: Gilly gives some last minute instructions to her assistant &
impresses her dad. He promises to handle Vivian no matter what Gilly
decides. He admits there are times when she & her brother would be better
off not taking their mom's advice. He says he can give her some pointers
on standing up to Viv. Gilly gives her dad a hug, then wonders where her
cab is. Charles sees a limo & wonders if that's her car. Inside the limo,
Sid lights a candle. Gilly opens the door & stares at him in amazement.

LIMO: Sid apologizes for the other night & says he wants to give her a
proper send-off. This is his way of saying he loves her. Gilly doesn't
know what to say. She says good-bye to her dad & gets in. She apologizes
for walking out on him. Sid says it's history. He says he's having
problems handling the thought of her being 1000 miles away, but he's going
to try to be flexible. Gilly says she'll try too. She knows she gets
sensitive as soon as someone challenges her. Sid says he's being selfish,
but she's going after it & nobody has the right to tell her to stop. They
both agree that they're lucky to have found one another & they love each
other & nothing will tear them apart. They kiss. Close-up on the candle.

SPAULDING: Brent hands Lucy his report & says AM should be properly
impressed to have received it so early in the day. He points out some
highlights that Lucy should point out to AM, including an extra study that
he did on his own time. He's pretty proud of himself. He asks Lucy to read
it & tell him what she thinks before passing it on to AM. She's surprised;
no one's ever asked her opinion on European marketing before. She admits
that she's just a glorified secretary. Brent thinks Lucy is really bright
& she can do anything. "And that's no line."

In AM's office, Alan says he thinks AM's project is a bad idea. AM doesn't
agree & is going to go through with it. Alan wonders why AM bothered to
ask his opinion. "Because I wanted to find out if you could stand my not
doing what you want. You can't." Alan doesn't like the games AM is
playing. AM accuses his father of lobbying the board against him &
planting negative news stories about him. He wonders how long Alan expects
him to put up with it. "As long as I dish it out," replies Alan. It's all
about being a Spaulding. AM disagrees with the arcane family code. He will
do what he thinks is right. "What you think doesn't count anymore!" He
tells his dad to stop going behind his back. AM throws down the gauntlet:
"Either you back me up or I will have you thrown off the board!"

LIGHTHOUSE DECK: Matt thinks it smells like spring. Van senses a hint of
it too. She sees a tree with a few buds. "New beginnings," says Matt. She
realizes he's trying to draw a parallel between the coming of spring &
Josh's bizarre behavior. Matt says Josh just wants what they have. She
admits she wouldn't give one moment of it back. "Josh wants his moment,"
Matt says. Van gives in. But she thought Matt & Josh were arch-enemies.
Matt points out a guy clamming & another with a metal detector. Why do
they do it? Because they love it. Van gets the point. She wonders what
Matt loves the most.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: Ross wonders why Blake thinks Dinah is lying about so many
things. She says she can prove the truth if he wants her to. Then she
admits she may have exaggerated some things. Is that such a crime? He asks
what she exaggerated about. She says it was about the hospital -- it
didn't cost that much & she did use some of the money to live on. She
wouldn't come home because she couldn't admit to being a failure when her
parents are such successes. Ross says he & Van don't judge her on her
accomplishments -- they love her no matter what. Dinah thinks Van wants
her to be perfect all the time. "I really want to prove myself to her, but
I don't know how." Ross says Van can be distant & remote, but she's a good
woman & loves Dinah very much. He gives Dinah a kiss & says he has to head
off to work. Dinah is worried about having to be alone with Blake. Ross
thinks Blake will apologize first thing when she gets home. He leaves &
Dinah settles on the couch with a plate of muffins & a big smile.

LIMO: Gilly worries that she will miss her plane. Sid says the driver has
promised to get her to the airport in 10 minutes. In the meantime, he
serves her caviar & champagne. They toast to her new job. Gilly says he's
making it harder for her to consider the offer. But she thinks his send-
off is the sweetest thing that's ever happened to her. He kisses her
again, to complete the send-off. Then he asks the $64000 question: if she
goes out there & they want her, will she stay? She doesn't know; she's
been too upset about their fight to deal with it. He asks to be the first
to know her decision. She agrees & kisses him again.

SPAULDING: Alan says AM can't fire him because he controls most of the
directors. AM says they'll never throw him out; there's been too much
turmoil in the company recently. Alan remembers when they discussed making
AM president, it was supposed to be a collaboration. "That was before you
destroyed my relationship with Tangie," says AM. Alan denies doing any
such thing. AM says he has learned that what Alan wants comes first &
everyone else be damned. He believed Alan really loved him at first, but
he's gotten wise: "You suckered me, Dad, but I'm onto you now. You blew
it." AM walks out of the office. Alan strolls behind the desk. Alex walks
in & asks where AM is. She was hoping they would join her for lunch. She
deduces that things are not going well between father & son. "You were
right, Alex," Alan says. "I should never have given him this." Alex laughs
& says she's also made mistakes. Alan says he was a fool for love, but he
wants it back, all of it. "And I'm going to get it!"

LIGHTHOUSE: Van asks what Matt really loves. Carpentry? No. But there's
something. Will Matt tell her? No, but he'll show her, later.

CARRIAGE HOUSE: When Blake walks in, she almost gets hit with a magazine
that Dinah tosses from the couch. Dinah jumps up & says she was just
heading out to the mall; did Blake need anything? Blake says the shopping
spree is canceled. She informs Dinah that they're going to have a little
talk, and the screen fades to black.
