Morning in Springfield, USA...

ROSS'S OFFICE: Ross greets Delores, then sees a headline in the paper that
he doesn't like. Delores warns him about bills that need paying. Ross says
he'll handle it. Delores rolls her eyes as she reminds him of an
appointment; she's concerned because all the inquiries from his TV
commercial are contingency cases. Dinah arrives to check out her Dad's
office. She calls his place "cute" & "quaint." Ross smiles & laughs a bit
uncomfortably. She gets it -- he's trying to be unpretentious so people
won't know how well he's doing.

SPAULDING ENTERPRISES: AM is getting a haircut at his desk & talking
finance on the phone. Lucy brings in some files & reminds AM of his
schedule for the next few hours. He says he'll need her to work late
tonight. "How late?" she asks nervously, reminding him that she has a date
with Brent. He apologizes & says it slipped his mind. Lucy says she can
stay a little while, if he really needs her, but AM is already freaking
over the story in the Journal with Tangie's byline: "Spaulding President
Draws Fire for Risky Busines Move."

SPAULDING MANSION: Alan, having just read the same article, phones for
flowers to be sent to Tangie at work, no card attached -- 3 dozen long-
stemmed roses. Alex enters & Alan notes that she was out late last night.
He points out the article, but Alex doesn't even glance his way. He asks
if she's all right.

JESSUP FARM: Roger is getting his aggressions out by chopping firewood
with a big axe. Blake arrives, having tracked him down with her keen PI
skills ("You always come here..."). Rog knows Holly was at Blake's last
night when he got the bum's rush & wants to know what she said. "Not much,
well a little," shrugs Blake. Rog asks if Holly mentioned Fletcher. Blake
nods, embarrassed. Rog takes a mighty swing at another log [no doubt
envisioning Fletch's head].

JOURNAL: Tangie tries to get the scoop on Fletch from Nick. Meanwhile,
staffers are questioning Holly about assignments. She refers them to
Fletcher, but Tangie interrupts with the news flash that he's quit.

MANSION: Alex won't talk, so Alan returns to singing Tangie's praises.
Ginger interrupts to ask about the baby stuff; Alex says to put it in the
attic. Alex tells Alan that there won't be a baby & Nick & Mindy are
splitsville, in a tone that invites an "I told you so." Instead, Alan asks
if Nick will stay on at the house; Alex says no with a violence that
betrays her tenuous control of her emotions. She speaks of Nick, but she's
also talking about herself: "I'm sure he feels quite bereft trying to hang
on to something that's long gone, long over. I'm sure he thought or hoped
he could undo the damage done. It's just so hard to let go." Alan sees
that Alex hasn't let Fletch go yet & if she wants him back she'll have to
take a risk. "What's worth fighting for never comes easily." Alex leaves
without a response. Alan goes back to reading Tangie's article aloud with
something approaching glee.

SPAULDING: AM finishes the sentence that Alan started with a tone of
outraged amazement. The gist of the article is that AM may be taking
unnecessary risks to try to prove himself capable of a job he's not quite
up to. "She completely trashed me!" complains AM. He thinks the article
completely undermines his credibility. Lucy says he did the only thing
that made sense, but AM doesn't think it's going to look that way. Lucy
thinks the article says he's not afraid to make tough decisions. AM
wonders how Tangie got the story, since he didn't talk to her. [Well, duh,
AM, don't you think it might have had a better PR angle if you *had*
talked to her?! Where's Blake when you really need her?] Lucy suspects
Tangie overheard AM & Alan's argument & made plans to meet Alan later. AM
asks Lucy to get Tangie on the phone & tell her he'll give her a follow-up
interview. "Promise her anything; just get her here. Now."

JOURNAL: Holly is incredulous. "He can't quit!" She gets hold of herself &
consults with Nick, who is getting everything under control. He tells
Holly he found out last night. Tangie looks on with interest. Nick gives
some assignments to the staff & they leave. Holly asks rhetorically how
Fletch could just leave; Tangie opines that he might havw gotten sick of
all the crap with her & Roger. Holly admits that it all blew up last night
& Fletch told Rog. T is aghast that Holly didn't do it herself. She says
she was just trying to protect Fletch. "I just didn't want to Roger to
kill him." She says it's all over, since she gave Roger the boot.

Tangie & Nick are both surprised. T asks, what about the feelings Holly
had for Rog that she said she could never have for anyone else? T defends
Rog, saying he really loves Holly. "If he's ever bad... it's because he
doesn't feel that anyone could really love him for who he is." Nick
decides to leave before he becomes ill. "Roger is his own worst enemy,"
continues Tangie. Holly nods at this, then excuses herself to go in search
of Fletch. She asks Nick where to find him. Nick won't tell. Holly goes
anyway, leaving Nick in charge.

ROSS'S OFFICE: Dinah munches on a bagel & checks out the office while Ross
chats up a potential client on the phone. "Yes, those are my real teeth,"
he tells the caller. Ross wants to talk to Dinah about Van. Dinah wants to
talk about Blake. She asks if he & Blake are OK after the "fight" last
night. Ross says it was just another one of their arguments about Roger --
the subject of most of their arguments. Speaking of Rog, Ross didn't like
the fact that Dinah was out with him all night. Dinah sighs & says it was
no big deal & she didn't even know who he was. Ross didn't like reading
about it in the paper & asks her to be careful about Rog in the future.
Dinah wonders why Blake didn't tell Ross, since she knew. Ross figures it
must have slipped Blake's mind. He hopes Van didn't see the item. He
outlines the history of bad blood between Rog & Van & warns Dinah again to
steer clear.

Ross asks where Dinah was last night, before coming home so late. Hanging
out with old friends, she replies vaguely. He wants to know where she
went. Dinah implies that he's being overprotective & he backs off. Dinah
worries that she's imposing on Ross & Blake. Ross asks if Dinah's visited
with Van lately. No. Ross encourages Dinah to spend some time with her
mom. Dinah says she feels more comfortable with Ross. All Van does is "ask
a million stupid questions." Ross laughs that Van can't possibly ask more
questions than he does. Dinah asks him not to push her about it.

Dinah, acting embarrassed, admits she's broke. All the $ Ross & Van gave
her to live on in Europe is gone. With tears in her voice, she reels off a
list of excuses for why she went over her budget. She thought of getting a
job, but didn't want her grades to suffer. "I just didn't know what to
do!" Ross pulls out his checkbook, but Dinah tells him not to. "I hate
taking money from you, because I can see that maybe business isn't so
great for you." Ross tells her to stop worrying. He gives her a hug. "I
may not be wealthy & I may not have set up a trust fund for you like your
mother's family, but I'm here to help you in every way possible." At the
mention of the trust fund, Dinah's eyes light up.

JESSUP FARM: Blake thinks Rog & Holly's problems might blow over. They
could get through it & be stronger. She remembers all the tough times
they've already been through. Rog thought they had already put all the
years of anger & violence behind them to become stronger, a "magnificently
staid & ordinary couple." He reminisces sadly about their recent wonder-
ful, ordinary times. He repeats what Holly told him about not being able
to leave things to fate, to just let things be. "When someone is important
to me, my instinct is just to protect... no matter what the cost." Blake
is convinced that Holly & Rog's love will win out. Rog hugs his daughter.

HOLLY'S COTTAGE: Holly storms in, knocks a photo of Rog face down, & tries
to figure out where Fletch might be. She calls his home & gets an
answering machine with Nick's voice on it. Alex knocks on the door & just
waltzes in when Holly opens it, despite Holly's contention that she has
nothing to say. "Fine, I'll do all the talking," replies Alex.

SPAULDING: Lucy shows Tangie in to AM's office. Lucy hangs out until AM
asks what she's waiting for. Lucy picks up a stack of papers & leaves. AM
indicates his displeasure with the article & Tangie says he has no reason
to be angry, since she gave him every opportunity to talk to her. He tries
to play the co-owner-of-the-paper card, but Tangie doesn't report to him &
there's no policy at the Journal saying articles about the Spauldings are
off limits. AM says the argument is not about that--it's about his father.
He's obviously hurt. "You went right to him. The minute I turned my back,
there you are, the 2 of you, just like before." Tangie tries to tell him
he's all wrong, but AM knows whereof he speaks. "He used you to get at me,
and don't pretend you don't know that."

JOURNAL: Alan is looking for Tangie, but Nick says she's out. Nick thinks
Alan is there to give T a hard time about the article [he obviously
doesn't know about the rift between father & son]. Alan plays along with
Nick's misconceptions & says he doesn't like to see his son "bumped &
bruised" by the press. Nick says the Journal won't be a mouthpiece for the
Spauldings. He warns Alan not to lean on Tangie to try to get her to back
off. Alan promises.

JESSUP FARM: Blake tries to convince Rog to leave, but he's determined to
stay at the farmhouse. He needs the quiet & encourages Blake to go. She
grabs the axe from him & says she won't leave til he does. Rog asks again
about what Holly said. Does she love Fletch? Blake says Holly didn't say
that. Rog looks at the house & remembers his dream of making it a summer
getaway for the whole family. Blake says the thing with Fletch doesn't
matter. "Mom was hurt. She wanted to get back at you. So Fletcher happened
to be there. This is not the stuff great love is made of. Some one-night
stand with two people who couldn't be more different from each other?" Rog
thinks it sounds a lot the way Blake & Ross fell in love.

Blake thinks Rog & Holly belong together, despite what Ross thinks. Rog
understands Ross's point of view, based on his own history with Holly.
Blake admits the subject is becoming a thorn in the side of her marriage.
Rog tells Blake to go on home, but she wants to know what's going to
happen with him & Holly. "It's not over," he promises her, so she flits
off happily. To himself, he intones ominously, "It'll never be over."

HOLLY'S COTTAGE: Alex accuses Holly of using Fletcher & treating him
cruelly. "What gives you the right to treat Fletcher like that? To be so
vindictive?" Holly turns the tables, reminding Alex that it was her own
cruel deception that drove Holly into Fletch's, um, arms. "You wanted to
get back at Roger! You wanted us to suffer! The only reason you're here is
because it backfired!" "All you care about is revenge against Roger," Alex
maintains. She starts getting graphic about Holly & Fletch's sordid
interlude, but Holly tells her to shut up & get out. Alex won't go until
Holly promises to leave Fletcher alone.

Alex says things may be over between her & Fletch right now, but it's
happened before. She doesn't want to see Fletch hurt, & Holly has hurt him
badly. "At least I treated him like a man & not a lapdog," retorts Holly.
She likens Alex to Roger, saying they both have a romantic notion of the
way things were, but when they're with the person they want, they spend
all their time "clawing & manipulating." Touche. "You bury the person you
love with your limitless ambition til the point that the only love that's
left is in your head!" Holly remembers how Fletch was dying inside when he
lived with Alex. "You don't know what went on between the 2 of us & you
never will, & that's what makes you crazy," Holly finishes.

ROSS'S OFFICE: Ross writes a check & Dinah thanks him effusively. Then she
asks what he meant earlier about the trust fund. Ross says Henry set it
up, but he doesn't know the details, such as when she'll come into it. You
can see the wheels spinning in Dinah's head as Ross reassures her that
he'll take care of all her problems. He gives her $250. She says it will
help. Ross bites his lip & changes it to $500. As Dinah is hugging him,
Blake arrives with a bouquet of flowers & watches w/ concern.

Dinah turns to leave, makes a left-handed comment about Blake's choice of
daisies, then stops as the headline about AM catches her eye. She's
stunned & amazed to learn that "her" Alan-Michael is Spaulding president.
Blake flinches at the possessive. Ross explains that Dinah dated AM in
high school. "Do you know him?" asks Dinah. "I was married to him,"
comments Blake. Ross looks mighty uncomfortable. Dinah asks Blake if she
minds if Dinah visits AM. "Ask your father," responds Blake. Ross warns
her to be careful; AM is not a kid anymore. Dinah dances out. Blake thinks
AM ought to worry about Dinah & not vice versa. Ross asks what's eating
her. She says she got him daisies when she wanted to get him roses, but
she's been trying to economize. "And what do I see when I walk in here?
You're writing a check for $500, Ross. Have you lost your mind?"

Blake goes on about how she's learned to cook rice 42 different ways &
Delores discreetly closes the door, though she remains near enough to
listen in. Ross says business is picking up & he hasn't seen Dinah in
years, so he doesn't mind giving her a little "walking-around money."
Blake says the farthest "Miss Taxi" ever walks is across the room to light
a cigarette. Ross asks: "Why didn't you tell me that my innocent little
girl was out most of the night with your father?" Blake says she didn't
want to upset him & she's been keeping her mouth shut for that very
reason. She decides it's time for the ugly truth -- Dinah's going to blow
that money within 2 days. Ross is completely blind. Blake refuses to be
the overbearing, stingy stepmaman. She reins herself in & hands the
flowers to Ross, because she brought them to apologize for their fight the
night before. Then she takes them back, deciding she'd better return them;
they need the cash. She strides out. Ross sees Delores watching & demands
that she not roll her eyes & tosses a ball of paper at her.

SPAULDING: Brent chats up Lucy at her desk. In AM's office, Tangie insists
the story wasn't personal, while AM insists she was trying to get back at
him for walking out on her. She shakes her head at him. "You still think
your father & I were having some sort of behind-the-scenes romantic affair
while I was falling in love with you?" She's close to tears & AM seems
close to understanding, but she tells him to forget it, it was a long time
ago. He says the interview is over & she thanks him for nothing. She gets
on the elevator, accidentally dropping a glove in the reception area.

JOURNAL: Nick handles minor chaos & tries to dismiss Alan. Before leaving,
Alan encourages Nick to spend some time with his mom. He says the adoption
was important to Alex too & she's going through a tough time right now.
"She needs to talk to someone," Alan insists.

SPAULDING: Brent gies Lucy a folder for AM, then leans close to ask if
they're still on for tonight. She smiles & says yes as AM emerges to ask
for a file. Brent leaves. Lucy goes for the file. The elevator opens &
Tangie emerges, relieved to find her glove. She waits for the elevator to
return; when it does, Alan gets out. He asks about her meeting with AM.
She says he was angry, less at the article as at who wrote it. She asks if
Alan read it. He says it was competent, but in time she'll learn to dig
deeper & get at the "real truth." She anxiously presses the button for the
elevator & the doors finally open again. She leaves.

FARM: Rog chops up an entire forest, then sits, sweating. "You'll be back,
Holly. You'll be back," he says with conviction.

HOLLY'S COTTAGE: Holly grabs her coat & Alex calls her a"flighty,
neurotic, indecisive, selfish creature." Holly agrees. She says Alex made
her realize that what *she* wants is what important. Alex asks where she's
going. "To find Fletcher!" responds Holly, already out the door. Alex
watches from the doorway as the screen fades to black.
