     BOARDINGHOUSE

The clock says 11:00 p.m. and Bridget is sitting on the floor polishing
silver. David comes home from the awards. Matt comes down the stairs
and tells Bridget that Peter is in bed, but he doesn't know if he'll sleep.

     THE JOURNAL

Fletcher is packing up his stuff when Nick arrives & says it feels good
to be a winner. He wants to give Fletch the award, but Fletch doesn't
want it. Nick, using his keen powers of observation, realizes that
Fletcher is packing to leave the Journal.

    MARLER RESIDENCE

Holly tells Blake that Roger has gone too far this time and so has
Holly. "I slept with another man and your father knows about it." Ross
is sitting in a high-backed chair and hears her.

    SPAULDING MANSION

Ginger tells Roger that he can't go in the library because Alexandra is
meditating. Roger tells her Alex will be disturbed when she hears what
he has to say. Alex is upset that Ginger let him in the front door.
Ginger: "I told that man that he was person non-gratus, but he huffed &
he puffed..." Roger tells them he's there to celebrate a victory of
sorts with Alex. "Holly has a secret lover." Alex is not interested
until Roger says, "I wonder if you'll feel that way when you hear who it
is? I wanted you to be the first to know."

    DINER

Buzz is still trying to call Greece, but can't get through so he yells at
someone from the phone company. He finds out that she lives on 5th street.

    HOSPITAL

Josh (in jeans, plaid shirt, hat & arrow sticking out of one side of his
head) is leaning against the wall & snoring. Annie asks if she can help
him. He looks up & asks if she's trying to pick him up. She laughs &
tells him to go to neurosurgery on the 4th floor. Josh asks if she's
going to say anything about his clothes. She thinks he looks very sexy.

    BOARDINGHOUSE

David tells them how excited he was when Gilly won the award and wonders
why they didn't watch. Bridget was too busy cleaning and rearranging the
kitchen. Matt tells her to go to sleep, but she would rather do
something instead of lay in bed staring at the ceiling & think about
things. Bridget asks why Matt hasn't moved in with Vanessa. He says
it's because she has a very big family to take care of & until they get
more used to him being around, he doesn't think it'll be a good idea.
Matt asks if there was someone at the awards that David could have
celebrated with, but David wasn't looking. Lucy comes downstairs looking
for ice cream. They tell Bridget she needs to get out of the house and
have some fun.

     SPAULDING MANSION

Roger tells Alex he has her to thank for his latest good fortune. Alex
is sure he's earned everything he's gotten. Roger found out who Holly is
involved with & that it began the night she was lured over here. She was
so devastated she took a lover-- Fletcher Reade. Alex drops her glass of
wine. She thinks it's a joke & asks him to leave. Roger tells her he
thought it was a joke too & had a laugh at Reade's expense. Alex
wonders what he's going to gain by saying this. "Don't you know that
Fletcher & Holly can't abide each other?" Roger: "I got it from the
horse's mouth-- both horses in fact." Alex thinks Fletcher had a moment
of temporary insanity, but Roger tells her that it was insanity & not
temporary. It's still going on. Alex wonders how it could go on right
under his jealous little nose. "A man with your mammoth ego would assume
no woman in the world would cheat on the illustrious Roger Thorpe."
Roger says it isn't ego, he loves Holly & wanted to spend the rest of his
life with her. "The only bright spot in this atrocity has been telling
you about it." Alex tells him that he drove her to rip them apart. She
feels justified in giving him back some of his own medicine. Alex says
it has nothing to with her, but when Roger asks how she'll feel if they
make it permanent, she orders her car.

    JOURNAL

Nick tells Fletcher he can't quit now. Fletcher doesn't want to feel
this way about Holly. To care who she's with or what mood she's in or
wonder what's going on when she pulls down the blinds or what that tone
of voice means. Ever since this happened he's been a man of reaction &
inaction, but tonight he took charge and there's no going back. Nick
understand because he's fighting the urge to bolt. Fletcher tells Nick
he told Roger & thinks Holly will never forgive him.

    MARLER RESIDENCE

Ross scrunches down in his chair & listens while Blake says "Fletch?
Fletcher Reade?" Holly doesn't want to talk about it, she's been going
over it with Roger. "I don't want you to try & convince me that Roger
loves me & we belong together. I'm fed up. I'm not going to get caught
up in his psychodrama. Every time I get involved with him, I lose my
sense of myself. He sucks up all the air, there's nothing left for me &
the worst part is the fear. The last few weeks I've been scared to death
that he'll find out & do something terrible. I can't live with a man who
leaves me in such fear. Love is what you & Ross have. Whatever it is
between Roger & me can't be love."

Blake: "Why are you upset that Dad's going to hurt Fletcher? Is this
thing over between the two of you? It is over, isn't it?"
Holly: "Well, maybe not."
Ross stands up clapping. "Good for you, Holly."

    BOARDINGHOUSE

David is putting a temporary tattoo on Lucy's shoulder (he has some on
his arms) and Matt is showing Bridget what to do if someone jumps out and
grabs her. Lucy & David are interested too. Matt will teach them if
they show him their special talents. Bridget says she used to stand on
her head & blow bubbles, so she, David & Lucy try to do it.

    JOURNAL

Nick wonders why this blowup with Holly is driving Fletcher away. Fletch
says it's because she heard him telling Roger that he loves her. "She
looked at me like I was an escapee from a petrie dish, like I was the
lowest entry on the food chain, like I was bacterium, a microbe. She
didn't need to say anything. I could tell at a glance that as far as she
was concerned I didn't stand a chance." Nick knows that look. Melinda's
been looking at him that way.

Fletcher has been thinking about going somewhere warm & Nick wonders if
he can come along. Alex arrives & Nick tells her about the adoption
"It's over. Me & Melinda are over too." She wants him to stay at the
house, but he's moving in with Fletcher. When Nick tells her Fletch is
quiting the Journal, she leaves.

     MARLER RESIDENCE

Blake: "Ross didn't mean that." "Yes, I did." Blake asks Holly not to
make any decisions now, she was so close to making it work with Roger.
Holly tells Blake she hasn't been listening. Ross tells Blake to listen
to Holly, she's trying to save her life.

Dinah comes home. Ross thought she was in her room asleep. Blake:
"Dinah doesn't need any sleep." She introduces Holly to Dinah.

     HOSPITAL

Josh waited to walk Annie home, show her that his leg works, and drop her
off at her stoop. They leave hand-in-hand.

     JOURNAL

Fletch thinks they're quite a pair. Nick wonders if he has enough room.
They think they'll have fun "no one rolling their eyeballs at us just
cause we want to watch a game." They can order pizza & stay up as late
as they want to, play poker all night. Fletch can work on his novel that he
started 20 years ago.

     DINER

Buzz is still talking to Irene, the phone lady. He stops chatting when
he finds out she's been a widow for 30 years and has great
grandchildren. Alex comes by for a cup of coffee.

    MARLER RESIDENCE

Holly doesn't want to talk about it, but Blake wants to know the
details-- she wants to know how long the thing with Fletcher has been
going on. Holly tells her it happened the night she thought Roger was
with Alexandra. Dinah says, "Alexandra Spaulding?" The door rings.
It's Roger-- he needs to talk to Chrissy.

    DINER

Buzz wonders what's keeping "Al" sleepless in Springfield tonight. Alex
tells him angry thoughts "buzzing" around her brain. He asks her to play
hoops, but she's not interested tonight. She heard news that upset her.
She thought Fletcher would move back eventually. Buzz tells her about
his divorce & the sexy lady on the phone (he liked her because she
sounded like Nadine). Alex knows she & Fletch are right for each other
and doesn't know how to stop him from making a big mistake. Buzz tells
her to fight for him.

    MARLER RESIDENCE

Blake hustles Holly into the kitchen and tells her to talk to Roger.
Holly asks if Blake wants her to be happy. She can't be happy with
Roger. Ross tells Roger that Holly's car broke down and Blake is driving
her home. Roger wants to wait for her, but Ross says it's late and shuts
the door. Blake is upset, she wanted to talk to him. Ross forbids her
from following him. Dinah raises her eyebrows at that.

    BOARDINGHOUSE

Eating ice cream by candlelight, Lucy tells them about Brent. She's
trying not to get carried away. Matt tells her to get carried away, but
Bridget says she's doing the right thing-- think with her head & not
other parts of her body. Lucy & Matt go upstairs. Bridget wonders if
she should buff the floor in Company. David knows what's going on and
what to do about it. "We'll ask Matt to watch Peter and we'll get in my
car tonight and drive to Duluth to see Dylan." Bridget thanks him and
gives him a hug.

    THE JOURNAL

Nick's working & Fletcher tells him to be quiet in the morning-- he's
sleeping in. He leaves.

    MARLER RESIDENCE

Blake tells Ross he can't forbid her to do anything. Ross says he did it
out of respect for her mother. Holly asks Blake to stay out of it. Ross
says goodnight and leaves. Blake asks Holly to stay, until she's done
talking to Ross. Dinah tells Holly she's glad to meet her, because she
spent time with Roger. "He's not like most other men, he's very deep,
with an impressive mind. He was over the edge. I wondered what the
woman was like that had done this to him and here you are. Fascinating."
