   Diner.
Frank catches Eleni about to blow Dodge back to Crete (w/help from
Buzz - her packed suitcase obscured by counter), and a long convo
ensues. Essentially, Eleni promised God (after Marina's rescue and the
5th street fire) not to ever take anyone in her family for granted
anymore. She feels the Crete brood really needs her, and someone could
actually die as a result of complications in the "vendetta", there. F&E
sit at Booth One; more chat:
   E: "...small village...honor challenged...dangerous.."
F: "..this stuff seems so --- _primitive_..." :)
Franks suggests they go to the village in spring and combine business
with pleasure (2nd honeymoon).
Buzz comes in yelling "The car is ready!". Frank spots the suitcase,
and Buzz lies that it contains old clothes for the shelter, and he and
Eleni are on a mission of mercy.
Frank: "...I love you very, very much...you and
Marina are the two miracles in my life..."
   Big hug and kisses.
B and E transport out. Frank leaves for surveillance work.

Eleni (w/Buzz) returns to tell Frank the truth about her absence, but
he's gone. A chat w/Buzz (Guilt City), and E makes her final decision:
since F and Marina are safe w/family, she must go home and make
apologies in person.
Everybody wave good-bye to Ms. Kanakaredes. :)

David returns to the boarding house.
Bridget is in the basement, going through old clothes and stuff, deep
in angst. She suddenly decides to apply heavy makeup as salve for her
spirit (weird scene). Dave goes down to store some suitcases and gets
the 4-1-1 from the (pardon the expression) "horse's mouth":
   "...Peter's gone (w/Vanessa), Dylan left, YOU left...even
the mouse that used to run around the kitchen sink is gone
...scary...when did I lose it...the hellion that used to do
anything for fun? Where did the crazy days go? ...think I
    can make them come back?"

Dave describes the current version of Jet that he sees before him:
   "...gutsy...brave, gave (all she had),
then the people she loved left..."
He tells her that the Gab-ster left him and took a bribe from Vivian
(what went down during his visit with her in custody??; episode wasn't
 shown in Chicago).
They both acknowledge they're feling "empty", and share a big hug as
antidote.
Back upstairs in the kitchen (Jet in '60's'/'70's (multi-colored)
clothes and hat), they go for some fudge-ripple ice cream, but discover
the carton empty.
Jet: "...what kind of pig would eat all the ice cream??!"
Dave and Jet in unison: "Lucy!"
She enters on cue, and they all crack up, laughing heartily.
Luce notes that it's good to see her friends smiling, again. :)

[OK. Let's start the "When Do David and Bridget Bop" betting pool]

   Journal. Holly's office.
Roger is getting dangerously close to drawing the truth out of Holly,
and Fletcher uses the "Holly-as-jealous-of-Tangie" gambit to explain her
bizarre behavior and throw Rog off the scent.
Roger follows Fletch to the outer office, but gets nowhere during the
"inquisition". A phone call --- Sid's been arrested for the 5th Street
fire. The paper springs into action, and H and F prepare to transport en
scene. Just prior to leaving, Holly pays Fletch a bit of respect:
   "...thanks for not telling Roger...
(about us f**king like bunnies on my desk)".

   Police HQ.
Bill, post-confession for (possibly) starting the 5th Stret blaze, is
still in Cutter's office. Patrick calls Vanessa, and stashes Sid
(Levy takes him to the basement bathroom :) ).
Gilly transports in looking for loverboy; Van (Matt by her side)
arrives in cartoon-quick fashion and is brought up-to-speed by Patrick
in the office/interrogation room.
Waiting for news from or about their respective mates, Matt and Gilly
chat about their ignorance concerning recent events.

In the inner office, Bill goes into Flashback mode, and tells how he
overheard Josh and Van fighting about her relationship w/Matt; how he
heard Josh say it was going to ruin her life. He followed his mom to the
warehouse...waited outside 'til she left...went in and recognized the
place as a "love shack" of sorts (saw Poloroids on wall; note pinned to
pillow):
"...I knew what they were doing in there...I trashed the place...
must have knocked over a kerosene lamp on my way out...ran home
...heard about the fire the next day...should have said something
    earlier, but I was scared..."
Cutter isn't sure that Bill started the fire, and goes to the scene
to try and mentally piece events together. Levy arrives, and informs C
that shit is hitting the fan back at HQ. Cutter is caught between a rock
and a hard place; there's just too much doubt. Technically, the
chemicals (imporperly?) stored in drums were the direct cause of the
mayhem - a simple kerosene-initiated fire wouldn't have brought down the
entire neighborhood...

Back at HQ, Sid is discovered in the basement bathroom and brought
upstairs. Matt is sent by Vannesa to find Cutter. Fletch and Holly
arrive; Cutter and Levy return.
Inner office: Cutter praises Bill for confessing, and informs him and
Vanessa that the blaze was probably started by fireworks - not the
kerosene lamp (if one was knocked over at all). Bill's face lights up
(pun intended, resonance included ;)) ), he walks over to shake Cutter's
hand, and exits to the outer office.
Cutter to Van: "...nothing would have been gained by interroga-
ting Bill, since the evidence is inconclusive..."
Sid (to the utter delight of Gilly) is uncuffed and released ---
insufficient evidence to hold hin in custody.

Another wonderful day in the neighborhood. ;)

"No Cardboard Character - 'GL' actor's goal: Grab the audience"
[By Maria Hart (Special to the Chicago Tribune)]
                         [Section 5 (Tempo), pg 3]

"One of the great characters to emerge from soap in the '90's has
been young tycoon Alan Michael Spaulding, a power broker in a grudge
match with his conscience. When actor Rick Hearst inherited the role in
1990, he solidified his reputation as one of the finest talents on soap
opera and earned an Emmy for his portrayal...
...but with 'GL' on its fourth headwriter change in less than a
year...all the characters in Springfield are in peril more from
scriptwriters than the dictates of storyline..."

   ...

"Hearst explains: 'There's been a lot of upheaval the past year. A
lot of garbage. The show has been cerebral, overwritten. Everybody was a
victim. All of a sudden Roger is wrongly judged? Alan has a heart? Come
on! What is going on??'
Hearst believes the show is going through a transitional period:
'What is really going to drag the soap down is this idea that there's
a good guy and a bad guy. The audience has been schooled to expect this.
In the '90's, Jill Farren Phelps and we, as actors, would like to bring
this medium to a new place, to not have the same setups, the cardboard
characters. [ED.: Amen, brother!] Let's see a son-of-a-bitch. The
viewers can stand it.'"

"Born in New York, Hearst, an only child, moved with his family to
Texas when he was 11. A failed attempt to make the high school baseball
team led to an audition for the school musical 'Bye Bye Birdie'. He won
the lead of Conrad...Hearst attended the U. of Texas in Austin, then
returned to NY where he studied acting for two years at Circle in the
Square...
In 1988, the actor moved to LA to star in the B movie 'Crossing The
Line'. Months later, he met his wife (the couple have a 3 1/2 year-old
son and a baby due in the spring) and was hired by DOOL...a couple of
years later, still in his mid-20's, Hearst (came to) GL..."
Treating his role with life-or-death seriousness is often cause for
razzing on the set '...they call me Energy Unlimited. Or my producer
will watch me question the reasons for my actions and say 'You're trying
to do Dostoevski'', says Hearst.
'...I want to run further into the abyss, be free of (AM's)
constraints. In the interim, when it's not that intense, I'm gonna try
to make sense of that, too...'".
